COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Absolutely, it's not rocket science nor fairly unique at this moment in time running a blog 24/7. At the end of the day, with all due respect, it's a nightmare. I personally shouldn't of started.

  3. With all due respect, you must be tired. Maybe you could put it on standby like a computer until something noteworthy happens, not that something does not happen somewhere sometime each day that is noteworthy. I get a kick out of your artwork which has never felt like any chalk on any chalkboard to me.

I actually knew a person that liked the sound of scratching on a chalkboard. This was both a first and last in my life.

  4. I was listening to a leaned discussion about nuclear power in China on one of the high faluttin' stations.

They are in the process of building about 30 in the next few years, while we haven't bult one in 30 or so. For them, it's the answer to clean up their dirty air, from the coal fired plants, and mom and dad bring the kids on tours to see how things are going, like to a park.

That one thing about authoritarianism. You don't have to put up with the juevniles over at the Snake River Alliance.

China is hardly communist anymore, but are authoritarian. What I wish is that our Congress would pass an emergency bill giving some agency the authority to cut through all the fog, like the Chinese are able to do, on that issue, and that issue alone.

So the Chinese build 30 while we haven't built one in 30

Call it the 30/30 Dem, not Rem---a new kind of 'equalizer'.

From the NYTimes: Britain Grapples with role for Islamic Justice

The conflict over British Shariah courts comes at a time when Islamic principles are being extended to other areas of daily life in Britain.

There are now five wholly Islamic banks in the country and a score more that comply with Shariah.

An insurance company last summer began British advertising for “car insurance that’s right for your faith” because it does not violate certain Islamic prohibitions, like the one against gambling.

Britain’s first Shariah-compliant prepaid MasterCard was begun in August.

Another thing someone pointed out was the problem Obama will have getting rid of 'doen't ask don't tell' in the military, a Clinton idea. If he does, it's back to the old days of no gays at all unless the entire law is redone, which it may be. In an all volunteer force, this doesn't look good for the military. An all gay force? Bobal, you shouldn't have said that. With all due respect I personally served in the Reagan Navy before "Don't Ask Don't Tell" and it would be absolutely wrong to say I'm fairly unique. At this moment in time I can't tell you how absolutely humiliating it was to hide my sexual orientation 24/7. It was a nightmare. 13. Even Dick Morris begins to see the Federal Socialists for what they are ...

    Bush's Legacy:
    European Socialism

    By Dick Morris

The results of the G-20 economic summit amount to nothing less than the seamless integration of the United States into the European economy. In one month of legislation and one diplomatic meeting, the United States has unilaterally abdicated all the gains for the concept of free markets won by the Reagan administration and surrendered, in toto, to the Western European model of socialism, stagnation and excessive government regulation. Sovereignty is out the window. Without a vote, we are suddenly members of the European Union. Given the dismal record of those nations at creating jobs and sustaining growth, merger with the Europeans is like a partnership with death.

  15. Debt Man Walking
Economists know the fatal flaw in our system--but they can't agree how to fix it

    by John B. Judis

As American demand for Chinese exports has stopped growing, China's economy has begun to suffer. Roubini has argued that, if China's export-dependent growth drops from 12 percent to 5 or 6 percent per year, China will be unable to provide jobs to the 24 million new workers that join the labor force each year. China would experience the equivalent of a recession, with repercussions throughout Asia. More importantly for the United States, China would no longer have the surplus dollars to prop up the market for U.S. Treasury bills. The Obama administration could, of course, reduce its dependence on China by reducing the budget deficit, but doing that now would deepen the recession, as well as preventing the new president from pursuing many of his domestic initiatives.

The consequences could be even more dire. In the past, countries in recession could count on countries with growing economies to provide outlets for their exports and investments. The hope this time is that economic growth in Asia and particularly China can backstop a U.S. and European recession. But, as a result of Bretton Woods II, prosperity in the United States is intertwined with prosperity in Asia. China depends on exports to the United States, and the United States depends on capital from China. If that special economic relationship breaks down, as it seems to be doing, it could lead to a global recession that could morph into the first depression since the 1930s.

Mr. Emanuel said that when Mr. Obama and his former White House rival, Republican John McCain, met in Chicago Monday, they discussed making a market-based system to control global warning "a top priority" of the new administration.

Mr. Emanuel promised that a major economic stimulus would be "the first order of business" for Mr. Obama when he takes office Jan. 20. The focus of spending will be on infrastructure, specifically "green infrastructure," which he said would include mass transit, upgraded electricity transmission lines, "smart" electrical meters that allow consumers to save money by using electricity at off-peak hours, and universal broadband Internet access, which he said would encourage telecommuting.

Emanuel Speaks of 'Era of Reform' He stressed that the new administration would "throw long and deep," taking advantage of the economic crisis to push wholesale changes in health care, taxes, financial re-regulation and energy.

"The American people in two successive elections have voted for change, and change cannot be allowed to die on the doorsteps of Washington," Mr. Emanuel said.

  21. This, part of a story in the LATimes:

How were the main issues resolved?

U.S. officials made a major concession on the timing question. They originally rejected a firm withdrawal date and suggested a vague "time horizon" for the U.S. pullout, based on conditions on the ground. They also spoke of extending the U.S. presence until 2015.

The final plan calls for U.S. combat troops to pull out of Iraqi cities, towns and villages by next July, and for all U.S. troops to be gone from the country by Dec. 31, 2011. The dates are not "conditions-based."

Iraq gave way on jurisdiction, dropping its demand for the right to try American troops for alleged crimes committed against Iraqis. Instead, a joint U.S.-Iraqi committee will examine individual cases involving Americans accused of committing such crimes while off base, and decide who has jurisdiction.

The Americans agreed to relinquish control to Iraqi authorities of about 16,000 Iraqis held in U.S. custody in the country; and Iraq won the right to inspect incoming packages.

  22. No mention of immunity for "contract workers"

Wonder if they are left twisting in the winds of Iraqi Courts?

    ReplyDelete
  23. National Review answers the question, about those contractors.

Caught in the risers, they are ...

Maliki drove a tough bargain with us, and the agreement is far from ideal. We protected our troops from falling under the jurisdiction of Iraqi law, but we didn’t protect contractors. And we gave in to two ill-advised hard deadlines.

U.S. troops are scheduled to cease combat operations in Iraqi cities by June 2009. This kind of deadline is unwelcome, since conditions can change, but at the moment it looks as though it may be practical. We are only conducting major combat operations in Mosul right now, and central Iraq is mostly quiet, so we have already effectively been shifting to peacekeeping operations.

The agreement also calls for all U.S. forces to be out of Iraq by the end of 2011, another unconditional deadline. But there’s nothing keeping a future Iraqi government from negotiating a new pact with the U.S. that is less categorical.

After all that's gone on, at home and in Iraq, after all the rhetorical hotair, for GWBush to agree to "Hard deadlines" for withdrawl from Iraq and combat patrols by June, in his last 60 days in office.

Why, betcha it makes habu just want to hurl.
