COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Obama Will Kill Pennsylvania Coal Industry

Listen to  How Obama Talks in San Fransisco

In Pennsylvania there are approximately 7,000 direct mining jobs and over 65,000 indirect or support jobs created to support and service Pennsylvania's mines. Pennsylvanians and other Americans need to listen to Obama's words. He is a dangerous Left wing ideologue. Votes matter. Pennsylvania owes Obama nothing.

  6. McCain needs 15% of the Democrats in Pennsylvania to support him. That can come from gun owners and hunters. Pennsylvania hunters kill 500,000 deer each year in Pennsylvania. That would imply at least 2 million hunters. There are 1.1 million veterans and their families. Will 15% of those numbers who are Democrats vote for McCain?

  7. BUSHIES THROW A PITY PARTY.... After failing in every imaginable way, with the worst approval ratings since the dawn of modern polling, and with a party that wants the president to be neither seen nor heard, the Bush White House is apparently feeling a little sorry for itself.

Others inside and outside the administration ... say the upbeat talk masks disappointment and frustration among many White House staffers, who believe Bush's reputation has been unfairly maligned for a series of calamities -- from the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks to the financial crisis -- that were beyond his control and that he handled well. GOP nominee John McCain's escalating attacks on Bush's tenure have added to the irritation, these people said.

"Everybody kind of wanted to spend the last 100-plus days doing some legacy things, and the financial crisis has thrown a wrench into that," said one prominent Republican who regularly talks with senior White House officials.

"You have a combination of no legacy stuff, a horrible economic mess and the likelihood that Obama is going to win," this person added. "There is a real sadness there."

The Bushies are sad? One wonders whether they can appreciate how the rest of us feel.

  10. David Kurtz at TPM:

    [...]

You're already seeing signs of the impact of the expectation of an Obama win. McCain is going all out to try to win this thing, but let's be honest, his party is not. You don't have to look too closely to see GOP officeholders running for cover, and not just from Bush, McCain, and Palin -- but from specific policies and tactics, too. As the political tsunami approaches the beach, it's every one for himself.

But all that being said, what will an Obama landslide translate into in the first year he's in office? It's not clear to me. One of the most toxic effects of the decline of the two parties as political institutions and the rise of the modern TV-based political campaign, with its cult of personality politics, is that the election becomes a referendum on the candidates themselves, rather than on broad policies or platforms.

The peril of the modern political campaign is not its nastiness (come on, we're all adults). It's that it supplants a real debate, so that by the time the election actually happens and a victor is declared, it's not entirely clear what we all collectively just decided. Did we just vote for universal health care, or against that cranky old man and his dimwitted running mate?

    [...]

    Good question.

I would cut and paste from The Corner, but I've stopped dropping by. The metaphysical embarrassment is too much. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

  11. Obama's an educated/indoctrinated idiot, easily found at your local semi-decent to good college campus. Above-average manipulator, but had everything going for him once he didn't turn out a total screw-up due to his mother and father, up to and including this campaign season. Biden's might be of slightly above average intelligence, but is also a self-important blowhard. McCain's...average, with flashes of stupidity. Palin's of average intelligence, but ignorant, having not been in the Washington talk-shop for decades or obsessed with politics all her life.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Kurtz is full of shit. Popular politics have been like that for the average voter: for personalities over programs and style over substance. Those truly interested have always had to dig under the veneer to find what was truly bought, if he hasn't looked or poo-pooed the process, it's his own fault.

I Despise John McCain. I'm going to vote for him; but, I'll feel sick about doing it. You'll probably, on the night of the 4th have to put up with the drunkest blogger to ever puke on a keyboard in Mississippi.

I'll tell you how I feel about it; I'm going to stock up on liquor, tomorrow, just in case we have some sort of silly liquor-on-election day laws still in effect down here.

  21. The Republicans certainly promoted personality before position, this cycle.

It was their entire game plan, that seems to have been the case.
If McCain were to draw that straight, and win. He'd have no policy mandate from the electorate.

Obama and the Dems have promoted a series of policy positions, and run on them. Tax cuts, expanded student aid, universal health care.

Obama could claim a mandate, but McCain, he'd still be trying to chart the course, governing day by day.

That is the winner, hands down.

Of all the Republicans to have been brand tested, this past 18 months, Sarah Palin is the only "winner" that they have produced.

Whether she is smart or not, ignorant or educated, matters not a lick. She'll learn to parrot some stock responses, may even hold a press conference or two, for the experience.

But of the entire cast of GOP candidates, she soars above the rest of the turkeys.

  25. I still believe that there are enough people who cannot stand Obama's voice, who hate the fact that he is hard Left and has a history of associates that do not reflect mainstream US values, and are not buying into the guilt black thing to upset this race.

The Bradley affect is bigger than thought. It is probably commensurate with the office.

Who cares about a big city major where the population is majority black? Governorships are another matter and the presidency in a league of its own.

Obama is all about race himself. He was not a community organizer in Appalachia or Hawaii for that matter. He was at the million man march with Farakkan, worshipped for twenty years with Rev Wright and is a member of the Black Caucus.

He uses his white mother and grandparents as a flag of convenience. Obama is getting 100% support from the black voters.

There are probably 15% of white Democrats, who aren't talking, and who will have no one looking over their shoulder when they vote.

They are no better or worse than the blacks who are going to vote black. So it goes in America.

  28. Trish, you qualify 100% as a "kibbitzer".....

Pete, about your point, the inimitable Jennifer Rubin has a theory about what kind of conservatives are more likely to attack Palin. She calls it Players vs. Kibbitzers. Players are political ops, office holders, commentators and radio/tv hosts who have an audience that determines their income, who see their jobs as rallying the troops, persuading people and defending them. They care about outcomes. That type can't afford to smack readers/listeners or assert that they have come to a judgement superior to that listeners — unless they are so persuasive that they can get away with it.

The kibbitzers, on the other hand, are people with columns or who write books, who feel that their personal search for truth, a clever new analysis — or popularity — is the point of the exercise. "They write books, tell us what is wrong with conservatism, and scold the poor slobs who run campaigns. They lack any visceral sense of actual conservative voters" They are attached to no grass roots, and their goal is to appear smart, or thoughtful in their moments on, say, Charlie Rose. Rubin goes on to say, ""Now, some of the Kibitzers, truth be told, don’t care much about ideas: it is sentiment and word pictures that catch their attention. They’d rather toss around elegant phrases unmoored to any reasoned argument — slip the surly bonds of analysis, as it were — than mix it up in the hurly-burly of real electoral politics. And Palin’s not very poetic, after all."

In addition, as my wife (a lifelong Republican) says, an attractive, feminine, popular and successful woman who leads and gets things done scares the pants off those who aren't/don't.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Also, see Fred Barnes To Know Her is to Respect Her"

  34. Now, there’s real enthusiasm for Palin. Standing in front of the picture-perfect 1858 courthouse in Chillicothe, she draws about as many people as Barack Obama himself drew earlier this month. “I’m also extremely scared from the military side of things. He scares me to death. I’m not for losing any wars, and Obama beat Hillary because the far left thought he was more radical on the war. America’s greatness is in winning wars and being who we are as a capitalist society.”

As we speak, Palin has finished up and is shaking hands with supporters. She’s down in the crowd for a few minutes, and then climbs back on stage to wave goodbye. We both turn to the stage for a look. “She’s awesome,” Rinehart says. “Absolutely awesome.”

  36. And, another thing: the Palin-bashers always seem to overlook the fact that of the 15, or 20 most agregious misstatements, and complete falsehoods told in the debate, Joe Biden owned every one of them. All they can point to is that Sarah Palin mispronounced the name of the CO in Afghanistan.

agree Obama is a danger. I worked for the FBI anti terror unit for 25 years. All of Obama’s associates were under our watch. They are attached to world wide terror groups. Obama is a extreme left wing anti american constitution, He is far worse than Castro or Chavez. He received over $$$250 million fraud campaign donations from Iran and Saudi. Wake up america. If he is elected their would have to be a milatary coup to remove him. After 25 years as a counter terror expert I must warn America Obama is a enemy of your freedom and safety.

  74. I'm a citizen of the United States, trish.
Neither America nor Amerika hold my ideological underpinnings.

I can see the benefits of the US gaining economic and cultural dominion over northern Mexico, possiblly over all of Mexico.

I also see the migration of those Americans into the United States as unstoppable, now.

Will the United States, when the blacks make up 15% of the population and the Mexicans 30%, be the America of the Civil War Republican spin miesters or the Amerika of LBJ's "War" on drugs, poverty, discrimination and Vietnamese communists.

Neither of those marketing monikers constitute the republic of the United States of America.

Even the CIA tells the tale, accurately:

    conventional long form:
    United States of America
    conventional short form:

  79. rat, you've been on this rant about Socialism for a few weeks now. I think you have a misconception as to what socialism is. Government intervention in the markets is not socialism, having a military is not socialist. or, as Rick Salutin said on friday:

"Let's start with this. Socialism is not defined by state intervention in an economy. All states intervene in the economy, the United States more than most. It busts open foreign markets, fights for global resources (such as oil), controls labour militancy, develops new products (such as the Internet), which it then hands off to business. Above all, its military spending fuels its economy, and has for generations. Bank bailouts fit like a hand in a glove.

Okay, what about "spreading the wealth"? Not socialism either, within clear limits. Larry King asked John McCain this week whether a graduated income tax isn't (a sort of socialist) redistribution. The McCain reply was: Yes it is and no it's not.

    snip

And what is socialism? Well, Mr. Obama said this week that he expects to be called socialist because he shared his toys in kindergarten. It was a clever deflection of the charge but it's also a good start. Maybe the dybbuk speaks through him, too. Socialism is essentially social. It's based on a belief that we're responsible for and indebted to each other - including past generations. So sharing isn't a choice, it's our nature. Therefore, roughly speaking, everyone is equally entitled to basics such as jobs, homes, health and education - especially kids. State intervention in the service of that vision would count as socialism. There might be non-governmental forms, too. Eventually, the state might "wither away," as Marx said, but that mutual responsibility never would."

  85. Here's one conservative woman's opinion of Palin:

    "Sarah Palin, femme fatale

Sarah Palin drives men wild. At her rallies, they show up by the thousands. They wave handmade signs that say "Dudes for Sarah," and buttons that say "Proud to be voting for a hot chick." Sometimes, they outnumber women 2 to 1. "Marry me!" they yell.

What is it about some men? All a gal needs is high heels, big hair and a pretty face and they lose their doggone minds. Add a saucy dash of right-wing politics and they'll become your love slave. Look at Barbara Amiel or Ann Coulter.

Or the Fox News babes. They've all got that sexy dominatrix thing going. Men who vote conservative can't get enough of it.

That must explain why John McCain and his campaign managers and all those balding middle-aged guys at the Weekly Standard fell so hard for Sarah Palin. She's the greatest Republican femme fatale of all time. When she goes on about guns and God in those fabulous high heels of hers, she makes their hearts beat so fast. As Jane Mayer relates in this week's New Yorker, all it took was one encounter in the governor's mansion in Alaska, and the guys were smitten.

"She's a former beauty pageant contestant and a real honey, too," one bedazzled pundit wrote. Another couldn't help noting that she was "exceptionally pretty." A (male) Newsweek writer described her as "a mix between Annie Oakley and Joan of Arc." It didn't matter that she'd only been governor for a few months. She was a moose-hunting fertility goddess! It was these men who talked her up and up, and got her on the list, even though she didn't have the résumé. By the time Mr. McCain picked her for vice-president, he'd spent less than three hours in her company. But hey! Rush Limbaugh had called her "a babe."

Conservative pundit William Kristol, the most vigorous Palin-promoter of them all, referred to her on Fox TV as "my heartthrob."

Phew. Can you imagine any man being vetted in such a way? Can you imagine any serious person gushing over any male candidate in those terms? I thought not.

But now, cosmic justice has been done. The Palin bounce has turned into a lead balloon. This comes as a relief to those of us who were accused of mad, cattish jealousy for being horrified. Fifty-five per cent of voters now think Ms. Palin isn't qualified to be president. Her lack of qualifications is their top concern about Mr. McCain's candidacy - ahead of the economy, Iraq and everything else. Her negatives are strongest among women under 50 - the very people she was supposed to attract. Newspapers that have endorsed Republicans for 40 years are stampeding to endorse Barack Obama. Their main reason? Sarah Palin.

Mr. Obama's lead is now so commanding that, unless someone can prove he was behind 9/11, he wins. Thank you, Sarah! The trouble with Ms. Palin isn't simply that she's ignorant and badly educated. She has a vindictive streak and an enemies list six miles long. She abused her power as governor. Her current campaign, as commentator Andrew Sullivan says, marks a new low in "pure, content-free identity politics."

"She doesn't think aloud. She just ... says things," wrote Peggy Noonan, the respected Wall Street Journal columnist. "The Palin candidacy is a symptom and expression of a new vulgarization in American politics. It's no good, not for conservatism and not for the country."

And so, Sarah Palin will go down in history as the first vice-presidential candidate who ever mattered to the outcome. Mr. McCain's still sticking up for her, but, really, what else can he do? "I think she's the most qualified of anyone recently who has run for vice-president," he said the other day. Do I feel sorry for him? Not a bit. Men who fall for femmes fatales generally get what they deserve. And generally, they wind up ruined"

  88. Like Hoover, McCain has also demonstrated a political ineptness that has all but obliterated the more positive aspects of his record. As political commentators have repeatedly pointed out, the rhetorical strategies of the Republicans and the McCain campaign, whether it is “Joe the plumber” or smear tactics, cannot disguise the fact that both the party and its candidate are as out of touch with the common man and bread and butter issues in 2008 as they were in 1932.

The recent McCain-Palin mantra of accusing Obama of socialist and “resdistributionist” ideas also mimic the Republican criticism of yesteryears of the New Deal programs. And if McCain is the 2008 version of Herbert Hoover, then his running mate Sarah Palin is surely a modern day incarnation of all the populist right-wing nut jobs of the 1930s, like Father Coughlin who haunted America’s air waves like she haunts our televisions.

On a more serious note though, her campaign of innuendo and intolerance imitates the worst of a bygone era. If history is any guide, the McCain-Palin ticket deserves to lose.

Although there are provisions against golden parachutes for banking executives, among other restrictions, it does nothing to rein in the kind of behavior that caused the financial crisis in the first place.

One thing remains the same: regardless of how much money the government invests, the bailout plan still allows bankers to be in charge of bank policies, for better or, as we have seen recently, for worse. It's not socialism that we're getting or socialism that we have to fear, but unregulated capitalism.

Capitalism got us into this mess, and we are counting on government-backed capitalism to get us out of it.

The Federal Government, ash, holds title to over 70% of the land, in AZ. Across the West and Alaska that is the situation. Check the link for a visual graphic representation.

The Federal Socialist community owns the land. Granted,, in the Eastern States, where the Federals did not dominate, early on in the Republic the land is more privately controlled.

Distribution -the Federal InterState Highway System is Federally controlled.

    Amtrack, in a word.

Control of Capital - the Nationalization of the nine major banks stands as evidence there, Forcing the banks to sell a preferred interest to the Federals.

Means of production - they are still working upon that, but there are many. many public/private "partnerships", with more on the way.

That both Joe the Plumbers boss and Cindy McCain both pay in excess of 30% of their income to the Federals, that is control.

  94. given that last post of yours Sam you might appreciate a middle paragraph in that Rick Salutin piece:

"I'd say it's because it was never those socialists who kept the spectre of socialism alive. It was capitalism itself! Karl Marx wrote relatively little on socialism, just a few evocative hints in his callow (or not so callow) youth. But he exhausted himself analyzing capitalism. His argued that capitalism leads inevitably to crisis - a terse term for massive human wreckage - that leads inevitably to a search for better ways to organize economies, which will be, in some form, socialist. It's all dialectical as hell (Marx said), and if there's not a socialist in sight, capitalism will still continue to produce the spectre of socialism along with its nightmarish crises."

  107. How The Times followed a trail to find Barack Obama’s aunt

Those intriguing passages in Mr Obama’s book were first investigated by The Times during a visit to Kenya in September to interview members of the family, including “Granny Sarah”. Inquiries as to the current whereabouts of Omar elicited only vague responses – and even the suggestion, from a full brother of the missing man, that no such person existed.

This triggered a six-week search, one that would lead eventually to Boston and to Aunt Zeituni. Public record searches found traces of O. Onyango Obama, Uncle Omar’s real name, in Boston. A friend and a former landlady said that he now uses the name Obama Onyango.

In the course of searching for Uncle Omar The Times found a Zeituni Onyango, who also played a prominent part in Mr Obama’s book.

The Times called the Zeituni Onyango in Boston three times. The first time a woman said that she “went to California”. The second time a woman said: “She died last summer.” The third time a woman said in French that she did not know her at that address.

On visiting the housing estate, however, neighbours confirmed that she was indeed the “Auntie Zeituni” in Mr Obama’s book – as she eventually confirmed herself.

Uncle Omar has still not been found.

It was not until Wednesday evening that The Times obtained a formal identification of Ms Onyango by George Hussein, Mr Obama’s half-brother who had known her throughout his childhood.

Whatever the Democrat campaign may imply, there is nothing suspicious about the story or its timing. The only mystery, perhaps, is how so many people read Mr Obama’s book in the US without wondering what might have happened to the mysterious relative, lost in America.

The midday shows focused obsessively on ACORN and media bias.

Sean Hannity's Bill Ayers mania continued. Fox truly felt like an alternate universe.

Instead of being a cheerleader for John McCain or the Republican Party or the United States, the channel appeared interested only in raising conservatives' blood pressure. With conservatism fighting for its life, one of its key outlets spends its days venting to the like-minded.

  140. Ah, it's just frustrating, Sam, that people don't seem to care how close Ayers is to Obama and that he's a true killer.

The fact Obama admitted to all that hard drug use, that would have done in a Republican candidate. A democratic one too, a few years ago.

The country is changing for the worse.

  141. 359. Believer:

Bugsy — are you one of BO’s supporters who’re supposed to pretend they’re more moderate than they really are? I understand this is one of his new tactics.

The “get in their faces” turned kind of ugly there didn’t it? Are you trying to soften it now?

BO knows best all the Alinsky tactics. The ones Alinsky dedicated to LUCIFER. BO was one of his best students - even teaching his methods. “The end justifies the means.” You believe that?

Do you want to bring all the corruption and chaos that is Chicago - and where BO has been entrenched for decades - to the rest of the country?

Some of us don’t. We don’t like that BO sends his thugs out to intimidate those who get in his way - those who jeopardize his chances of winning. The list grows longer:

Talk to Hillary supporters - they’re not too happy with the way they were treated. Those caucuses allowed him to cheat and steal the nomination.

Talk to Freddoso who knows his thugs well. They tried to distrupt his radio interview to share what he’d learned from his research and wrote in his book.

Talk to Jerome Corsi who tasted some ugliness in Kenya. He was held incommunicado for a day there without food — not allowed to hold the news conference to reveal what he’d learned.

Talk to Joe the Plumber. A Democrat maxed ($2300) donor to BO’s campaign ordered his records opened when he had the temerity to ask BO the wrong question.

Talk to Barbara West - one member of the media who asked Joe Biden the wrong question. She’s out of a job now.

Talk to those media outlets that didn’t endorse BO for president. They’ve just learned they’ve been tossed from his plane.

Oh, it’ll get worse. Especially if he gets more power. You can count on it, I’m sure.

  147. I wish we'd made it back there, would have been interesting to watch the goings on.

The .45 automatic, the plumber's friend.

Such negative sentiments will quickly be magnified when the Messiah, like Bill Clinton before him, goes back on his campaign promise to cut taxes on 95 percent of Americans, and instead announces -- possibly in less than a month -- that taxes will have to be raised for the majority of wage earners.

What will be the catalyst for this decision? The exploding budget deficit, of course.

After all, the fiscal 2009 budget projects unified revenues (including Social Security and Medicare) of $2.7 trillion, and unified expenditures of $3.1 trillion. However, these numbers assume a 2.2 percent growth in the Gross Domestic Product and 5.6 percent unemployment.

    Hello? McFly?

We're currently at 6.1 percent unemployment, which will certainly go much higher in the coming months, likely stopping in the eights if we're lucky. And, as the recession has certainly started, 2.2 percent growth in FY '09 seems highly-doubtful. As such, $2.7 trillion in tax receipts might be a very aggressive forecast.

Maybe more important, $3.1 trillion in projected expenditures doesn't include the $700 billion (and counting!) allocated to bailing out failed financial institutions. This means that for the first time since World War II, America will spend 40 percent more than it collects creating a budget deficit almost guaranteed to be in excess of $1 trillion...and everybody in Washington knows it.

With this in mind, the talk coming from Democrats like House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank that tax cuts may have to be postponed next year due to the recession is a lot of pre-election hooey. These folks want higher taxes, and with the Messiah in command, they're gonna get 'em.

Yet, Obama has promised low income voters who don't currently pay federal taxes that they're going to get checks to offset their property and state taxes...and that's a promise this socialist is gonna keep.

    You betcha!

As a result, most Americans, in a slowing economy that's making them fearful for their jobs and their futures, will see their income taxes rise as Obama supporters receive checks largely funded by McCain supporters. And that's likely when things will really begin getting ugly, for the class warfare that Obama-Biden have been playing during this campaign will cease being only figurative.

To paraphrase Guido the Killer Pimp from the film "Risky Business," in a sluggish economy, never, ever mess with a man's livelihood.

But that's what the Messiah is going to do, and as a result a lot of normally non-violent folks who "cling to guns or religion" are going to really be feeling "antipathy to people who aren't like them," just not for the reasons Obama believes.

    Say Goodbye To America

  154. Bob,

As you know, we've "high graded" everything. We took and best and easiest first. Right now, solar and wind are almost at parity with coal, but I wonder if that takes into consideration the future price of coal. It's going to get harder and much more expensive to get at the coal. Are people taking that into consideration?

  155. Bobal: I'm gonna tax you to death.

I'm gonna ruin your coal industry.

I'm gonna make your energy costs skyrocket.

And you know I'm gonna take your guns.

    And trash your Constitution.

I've atheists and America haters all around me and a terrorist wrote my books.

How can this guy get two votes?

Because the alternative is going to stay in Iraq for 100 years.

And he was a cheerleader for a $840 billion dollar tax money grab.

And the Pubs already trashed the Fourth Amendment (unreasonable search - warrantless wiretaps) and Eighth Amendment (cruel and unusual punishment - waterboarding)

And McCain opposes drilling in ANWR.

And McCain supports Don't Ask Don't Tell.

That's worth a few votes bobal.

  166. On a dyke blog someone asked me a question whether I would support Sarah Palin if she was a man.

Of course I can find a whole slew of men with more executive experience than Sarah Palin's two years as governor of Alaska.

If I was on the crew selection board for the seventh shuttle mission, and the name Sally Ride came up, I imagine there would be a lot of objections along the lines of "Well, she was never on Gemini or Apollo. Let's go with someone more experienced."

Today, shuttle crews are routinely of mixed genders and it doesn't even rate a mention, all because of Sally Ride.

In twenty years women will routinely be on the national ticket, just as they are routinely elected governors with a collective yawn from the electorate. Today a woman on the ticket is a big deal. Sarah Palin could be the "Sally Ride" of Presidential politics.

But no, she's a conservative Christian who thinks a baby is a gift rather than a burden, so the NOW crowd and Emily's List will go with Joe "Hoof in Mouth" Biden and put off that wonderful day when women are routinely on the ticket for yet another eight years. But that's no surprise, because that same crew, including Hillary, supported Bubba when he was chasing every skirt that came near the White House, all because he talked the Talk.
