COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Serbs Do Us a Favor and Burn Our Embassy

Quite simply, we never should have been involved with Kosovo for any reason. Kosovo is part of Serbia as New Mexico is to the US. No American President to date would tolerate a European country getting involved in a Mexican led move to encourage New Mexico to declare freedom and secede from The United States. It was a stupid decision by the Clinton Administration to have bombed Serbia over Kosovo.

If the Serbian government cannot find the police or troops to protect the US Embassy, leave it closed. What loss is there to the US if Serbs or Kosovars have a more difficult time coming to the United States?

I have felt for some time that the next Muslim attack on the US would come from white European Muslims and the region of former Yugoslavia is loaded with Islamic militants. There are also Serbian nationalists who despise the US and could be another source of terror. The entire region is a problem that we do not need. It is a good place to start a review on where true US interests are. Not there.

Serb Protesters Storm Vacant U.S. Embassy
NPR

Serbian nationalists opposed to Kosovo's independence storm the United States embassy in Belgrade, after a massive rally in the Serbian capital. Several hundred young men dressed in hooded sports tops and scarfs had broken into the premises on the main boulevard of Kneza Milosa. The embassy was not staffed at the time of the attack.

Angry demonstrators broke into an empty U.S. embassy in Belgrade on Thursday, setting fire to its facade and tossing documents out of windows to protest Washington's apparent support for Kosovo's independence.

Serbian police stood by as black smoke billowed from the embassy compound, which had been boarded up after rioters threw stones at the structure earlier in the week. Papers and chairs were thrown out of the windows, with doors wedged into burning window frames.

Protesters were later seen removing the embassy's American flag.

The attack follows a day in which an estimated 150,000 demonstrators protested against Kosovo's weekend declaration of independence from Serbia. Protesters waved Serbian flags and carried signs reading "Stop USA terror".

The subject of Kosovo's independence is extremely sensitive for Serbs, who consider the breakaway region the cradle of their medieval nationhood.

  1. my last post--

I agree with Whit when he said he doesn't hold it against the Serbs for being really really pissed. I would be too, and I think American foreign policy is in a major error on this issue.

How we (the US) can be so stupid is beyond me. Frankly, I don't blame them (the Serbs) for being really, really pissed.

  4. We had an article in the paper today about Dworshak Dam, near here, and the possibility of its failing. Low possibility now, but really high damages if it does. It is seeping around the seams, and remedial measures are being taken as a precaution. It rated the highest number on the scale as far as damages/deaths go if it fails, but rated lower on the scale of whether or not it was to fail. Gladly, I am higher in elevation than the worst case scenario, if it fails.

  7. The Snobamas
    * * *
His problem was, is, his wife's words, not his, the speech in which she said that for the first time in her adult life she is proud of her country, because Obama is winning. She later repeated it, then tried to explain it, saying of course she loves her country. But damage was done. Why? Because her statement focused attention on what I suspect are some basic and elementary questions that were starting to bubble out there anyway.

    * * *
Here are a few of them.

Are the Obamas, at bottom, snobs? Do they understand America? Are they of it? Did anyone at their Ivy League universities school them in why one should love America? Do they confuse patriotism with nationalism, or nativism? Are they more inspired by abstractions like "international justice" than by old visions of America as the city on a hill, which is how John Winthrop saw it, and Ronald Reagan and JFK spoke of it?

Have they been, throughout their adulthood, so pampered and praised--so raised in the liberal cocoon--that they are essentially unaware of what and how normal Americans think? And are they, in this, like those cosseted yuppies, the Clintons?

Why is all this actually not a distraction but a real issue? Because Americans have common sense and are bottom line. They think like this. If the president and his first lady are not loyal first to America and its interests, who will be? The president of France? But it's his job to love France, and protect its interests. If America's leaders don't love America tenderly, who will?

And there is a context. So many Americans right now fear they are losing their country, that the old America is slipping away and being replaced by something worse, something formless and hollowed out. They can see we are giving up our sovereignty, that our leaders will not control our borders, that we don't teach the young the old-fashioned love of America, that the government has taken to itself such power, and made things so complex, and at the end of the day when they count up sales tax, property tax, state tax, federal tax they are paying a lot of money to lose the place they loved.

And if you feel you're losing America, you really don't want a couple in the White House whose rope of affection to the country seems lightly held, casual, provisional. America is backing Barack at the moment, so America is good. When it becomes angry with President Barack, will that mean America is bad?

Michelle Obama seems keenly aware of her struggles, of what it took to rise so high as a black woman in a white country. Fair enough. But I have wondered if it is hard for young African-Americans of her generation, having been drilled in America's sad racial history, having been told about it every day of their lives, to fully apprehend the struggles of others. I wonder if she knows that some people look at her and think "Man, she got it all." Intelligent, strong, tall, beautiful, Princeton, Harvard, black at a time when America was trying to make up for its sins and be helpful, and from a working-class family with two functioning parents who made sure she got to school.

That's the great divide in modern America, whether or not you had a functioning family, and she apparently came from the privileged part of that divide. A lot of white working-class Americans didn't come up with those things. Some of them were raised by a TV and a microwave and love our country anyway, every day.

Does Mrs. Obama know this? I don't know. If she does, love and gratitude for the place that tries to give everyone an equal shot would seem to be in order.

  9. So the US should abandon the Balkans to the Muslims and the Russians? Leaving them to carve out zones of influence.

Leave it to the EU to administrate, without NATO involvement?
Which would necessitate an EU force outside the NATO structure. A development that the US has been opposed to for years, since first proposed by DeGaulle.

Wouldn't that be a negative part of Team43's legacy, the loss of Europe, to the Europeans?

Have the members of the Bar embraced the libertarian notions of Ron Paul, abandoning "National Greatness Conservatism"?

I've been trending that way, but there is always some apprehension when that course seems to be the one advocated by more than just a sliver of society.

  12. The West's support for a creation of a 22nd Arab state called palestine is the reason for the season!

After all, who in any historic context could argue that the Jews did not have a right to Jerusalem, the City of King David.

But it IS the world's position that Jews should give up their 3000 year LONG claim to jerusalem, Hebron and just as importantly the "west bank" ( Called "Judea and Samaria" for thousands of years)

Funny blowback is a bitch, and I see all sorts of modern claims to nationalist statehood from a variety of modern invented nationalistic personages...
