COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Let God Sort Them Out Later.

Al-Sadr is reported back in country and now this:

Militia suspected on Iraq kidnap
BBC

A Shia militia group is thought to be behind the kidnapping of five Britons in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

Iraqi Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said that the Mehdi Army, rather than al-Qaeda, could be responsible.

The Anglican vicar of Baghdad, Canon Andrew White, said the kidnapping could be linked to the recent killing of a radical Shia cleric by UK troops.

The Britons were seized at a government building near Baghdad's Sadr City suburb, a Mehdi Army stronghold. The five men - a computer expert and four bodyguards - were taken from the finance ministry building in Baghdad.

The kidnappers wore police uniforms and staged the capture without firing a shot, senior Iraq officials said.

The story goes on to explain that the degree and complexity of coordination indicate Police involvement.

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner said: "Because these men were very unusually seized from a government ministry in broad daylight by people dressed as special police commandoes, in an incredibly brazen raid, the Iraqi government itself has got a few questions to answer about this.

"I think the suspicion is that there was some connivance, possibly low or middle-level, within the police. The Iraqi police is known to be heavily infiltrated by Shia militias."

Whatever happened to "Kill them all. Let God sort them out later."?

  2. Here is a perfect example of our being "out of touch" with realities in Iraq.

    re: Mr al-Sadr

BLITZER: And joining us now in Baghdad, Major General William Caldwell, U.S. Army, the chief spokesman for the Multi-National Forces in Iraq.

General, as usual, thanks very much for coming in.

Muqtada al-Sadr, the radical, anti-American Shiite leader, he shows up in Iraq, makes a fiery anti-American speech today. Has he returned from Iran, or has he been in Iraq all this time?

CALDWELL: From what we can tell right now, he came back a couple of days ago, and obviously he went down to the Najaf area where he's been until his speech today when he came out publicly. But we've been tracking and we'll monitor what's going on, and obviously hope that his return will contribute to the ongoing dialogue that we've already established and had going on now for several months with the Shia groups here in Iraq.

we'll monitor what's going on, and obviously hope that his return will contribute to the ongoing dialogue

War? we ain't fightin' any stinkin' war.

Buffers, we need more buffers, paint brushes, too. We're just one school away from critical mass, we can succeed, those floors can shine!
The is a light at the end of the tunnel, it's reflecting off the floor.

  4. CALDWELL: Right now, he is considered like any other Iraqi citizen here in Iraq, and is back in the country, and amongst his people, and we're just hoping that he helps facilitate and continues his open discussion we have had with the Shia and doesn't hinder that.

BLITZER: It's because, when he cries out as he did today, "Death to America," that sounds like someone who is not necessarily willing to have a dialogue with the U.S.

CALDWELL: And, Wolf, that's disappointing when you hear that thing, because everybody here wants to see this country unified and moving forward. All of the Iraqi people do. And when they have somebody that tries to use a position of influence to deter that from occurring, it's just a disappointment for the Iraqi people.

... everybody here wants to see this country unified and moving forward. All of the Iraqi people do.

Then why is there an Insurgency?
None of the Insurgents are Iraqi?

Saying stuff so stupid, you'd think the General was in the GOP, or worked for Senator Reid.

  5. CALDWELL: Yes. What we do know is that the Quds Force elements, the intelligence services over there in Iran, are, in fact, providing this funding directly to these extremist elements.

I mean, they have gone so far and their overall training, Wolf, that they have helped, like the -- a raid that occurred on the governor's position down in Karbala, back in January, we know that they had built a mock facility in Iran. And, in fact, it helped conduct the training and planning over there before they came back and executed that here in Iraq.

BLITZER: Do you know that -- if the Ayatollah himself, the supreme leader of Iran, personally has authorized the Quds Force in Iran to provide this kind of training and funding to these militias in Iraq?

CALDWELL: Wolf, I wouldn't venture to say whether he is or is not. I mean, what I can tell you is that we know that the Iranian intelligence services, the Quds Force, are, in fact, doing this though.

BLITZER: And what about Muqtada al-Sadr himself? Do you know if he personally authorized his militias to go ahead and undertake these kinds of operations in which not only Iraqis, but also Americans were killed?

CALDWELL: I do not know that for sure, Wolf. I can tell you, though, that we hope that he will use his influence to try to stop those rogue elements that are associated with his organization from conducting these activities against the Iraqi people.

BLITZER: We've spoken in the past about the Iranians also funding, supporting various Sunni militias, not only Shia militias. What else can you tell us about some specific evidence to back that up?

CALDWELL: The evidence that we have is that, in fact, we have in detention now people that we have captured that, in fact, are Sunni extremist-related that have, in fact, received both some funding and training from the Iranian intelligence service, the Quds Force.

We wished that they'd stop, but in the mean time, let's talk.

We are negotiating with the Iranians, now.
    It'll be over soon.
Just a few more floors to clean, we cannot teach the Iraqis how, that is to culturally insensitive. To think the Iraqi need lessons, while they already shine!

  6. 300,000 Supporters of Suicide Attacks in America Right Now!

Some of the results of the Pew Research Center poll of Muslims in America were startling: twenty-six percent of Muslims between the ages of eighteen and twenty-nine affirmed that there could be justification in some (unspecified) circumstances for suicide bombing, and five percent of all the Muslims surveyed said that they had a favorable view of Al-Qaeda. Given the Pew Center’s estimate of 2.35 million Muslims in America, and the total of thirteen percent that avowed a belief that suicide bombings could ever be justified, that’s over 300,000 supporters of suicide attacks. And 117,500 supporters of Al-Qaeda.

The amazing thing to me is that in eight years people have been crying for him to defend his policies and acknowledge his critics substantively, but this is the issue on which he goes offensive, against his own people. Similar to John McCain, who's held water for the Democrats for years, but then found the time to tell John Coryn to "fuck off."

  16. Mark Krikorian on the moral and practical failures of "temporary" worker programs.

    Excerpt:

"As to the first, economist Philip Martin, one of the world’s top scholars in this field, draws these three lessons from our experience with guestworker programs:

    1. “There is nothing more permanent than temporary workers.”
    2. “The availability of foreign workers distorts the economy.”
    3. “Employers invest in lobbying to maintain the program, not in labor-saving or back-saving alternatives.”

The first point is especially pertinent. Didn’t it occur to anyone why Ted Kennedy was agreeing to something that the labor movement has been fighting against since it won passage of the Alien Contract Labor Act in 1885? He knows perfectly well that guestworker programs always lead to increased immigration, both from “temporary” workers who don’t leave and from parallel flows of legal and illegal immigration sparked by the program...

Germany had the same experience with its postwar “gastarbeiter“ program for Turkish and other workers. When it was discontinued after the 1973 oil embargo, the government expected the “temporary” workers would complete their contracts and go home, because of the supposedly “circular” movement of such people, going back and forth between Germany and Turkey (the same story that today’s guestworker boosters are telling about Mexicans). Instead, the “temporary” workers not only stayed, they brought their families, too, causing Germany’s foreign population to nearly double over the next 25 years.

Sen. Kennedy knows this full well — one more indication that Ted Kennedy negotiating with Republicans over immigration is like Gary Kasparov playing an elementary-school chess team.

    ...

Of course, there are conservatives who get all this. Phyllis Schlafly has written that “Inviting foreigners to come to America as guest workers is equivalent to sending the message: You people are only fit to do menial jobs that Americans think they are too good to do,” and has approvingly cited Theodore Roosevelt’s warning that “Never under any condition should this nation look at an immigrant as primarily a labor unit.”

  17. Pew research points to 117,500 AQ supporters IN THIS COUNTRY NOW

That means they can do exactly what OBL has been doing from his hideout on the Afghan-Pakistan border.. use couriers for everthing, every message, every order etc

With out free open roads they can roam with absolute freedom from dead drop to dead drop.

Hitler used only couriers in the Battle of the Bulge planning and the allies didn't have a hint it was coming.

Human couriers are still employed today by all the major intelligence networks. Why. Because they are VERY effective.

So out of 117,500 AQ supporters even if they have recruited only 10% to be couriers that's 11,750 message movers..this is just an apersu of whats coming.

Add into the mix the percentage of wetbacks that hate the USA but want to be here for revanchist reasons that will ally themselves with AQ and ae're in deep, deep do-do if the Illegal immigration bill passes. Hell, we're already up to our navels in do-do right now and it's rising fast.

    From another time.

In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all – security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.– Edward Gibbon

  20. I've read that Gibbons thought that societies went through cycles, from barbarism to civilization and then back to barbarism, because one they'd reached civilization, they were no longer able to keep themselves above water vis a vis their neighbors. He thought that in Rome's case, one of the chief enablers was Christianity, which made them soft.

I don't really believe human behavior can be simplified and codified in such historical cycles, but that's what he thought, FWIW.

  22. Cutler,

One of the chief accomplishments of the PC movement has been the ability to support the multicultural sewer in which we are all sinking.

That multicultural/PC ethos has permeated so deeply into our culture that we are Pavlovian in our response to anyone who deviates from it.

Successful armies and civilizations have always done one thing. Demonize the enemy. The Hun spearing the baby with bayonet, the fanatical Jap.

I understand your prefacing disclaimer that you are as anti-PC as anyone but to then turn and say that wetback, or if I had said sandmonkey, raghead or whatever weakens your case and shows that you are not as innoculated as you would think from the language we and other countries have used throughout history to magnify the hatred for our enemies.

I consider those who enter our country illegally from Mexico and who have historically been called wetbacks, as just that wetbacks.

To make the claim that it doesn't help anything is debateable. Historically you would be incorrect in saying that.

We have now had a score number of years where corporate America, where most people work, has enforced PC. Buy inot the program or you're branded and out of a job..I understand that. When I worked for Wall Street firms I was office PC and it translated inot my daily life. To do otherwise draws the same reaction you have just voiced.

I am however independent of the corporate world and it's overweening directives. I have freedom of speech, glory be, And one of the things I am attempting to do is raise the consciouness of the Pavlovian masses that we have real ife enemies that have earned ever once of our enmity and hatred.

Just look at it as an atavistic marker to an earlier time when we use to win wars instead of just cow towing to the world. Atime when we weren't PC.

I don't know how old you are but if you're in you fifties or beyond you've used the caustic words before. And then like all of us you were reprogrammed by the Big Government/Corporate PC departments.

The campaign button in my dresser drawer says "I like Ike" on it.

  23. The trouble with all you folks is that you want to be "on your own", an old but now outdated American concept. This concept first infiltrated American life in the writings of one Ralph Emerson, in essays like 'Self Reliance'. Many other early Americans upheld this now outworn code. They even had a slogan for it--'The government that governs least is the government that governs best.' Sooner or later you will be forced to concede, and praise, the virtues of "shared prpsperity", because if you don't, your allowance will be withheld from you.

  25. Cutler,

Allow me to insert this. Most everywhere I have travelled, which includes all seven continents the native populations have epithets for Americans that they have no trouble using.

Here in NorteAmerica the word gringo is being rapidly replace with Gabacho, which is basically the equivalent of calling a whitey a nigger in Spanish. It is a prejorative el maximo.

Now I'm quite sure we could get DR who knows a helluva lot more about Spanish than I do to tell us some of the terms that are also used to demonize Americans.

Hell it's even gotten so bad in this country that several years ago a lad lost his job for using the word niggardly within earshot of an African-America. The word was used correctly, has nothing to do with race but the dude was fired because it sounded too close to nigger....now that is a travesty.

There is an active debate taking place right now in acedemia regarding why blacks can use the word "nigger" and whites can't. And the debate is taking place between African-American PhD's.

Now I didn't support George Wallace or Lester Maddox so I don't have any of their campaign pins, but even if I did I still steer clear of the "N" word in daily life.. I will admit to mumbling it on occasion when an "N" like act occurs...hell I'll even mumble f'n "N" word to add enphasis..

'Doom' Scenario Would Decimate U.S. Cities

A Hiroshima-style bomb detonated in the heart of New York City would "obliterate” downtown, kill or severely injure half the people in the two-mile blast area, and expose many tens of thousands to radiation that would lead to cancer.

That’s the sobering disclosure from a soon-to-be-released report compiled by a blue ribbon panel of experts.

And the same horror would unfold in any major American city, according to the report to be released by the Preventive Defense Project at Harvard and Stanford University.

"This is a scary scenario. I hope it’s unlikely, but nobody can calculate the likelihood,” Ashton Carter, a former assistant Secretary of Defense in the Clinton administration and a co-director of the panel, told the New York Post.

The report, "The Day After: Action in the 24 Hours Following a Nuclear Blast in an American City,” warns that little could be done for those caught in the blast area. But planning could save the lives of thousands nearby.

The experts also predicted that people just outside the blast area would "stand little chance of survival,” and the bomb would produce a radioactive plume that would spread from five to 10 square miles.

The bombing would most likely come from a country whose people we refer to in the reverential terms.

On the other hand, regardless of whether you meant “Wet-back” strictly as an anti-illegal term, I think most Hispanics are going to interpret it differently. Judging by our immigration policies, we can’t afford the prejudices and divisions that the rest of the world entertains, unless we want to end up like them, fighting amongst ourselves. We shouldn’t alienate legal Hispanics from a cause of enforcing American law that they can, and should support, because if enforcing American law becomes a matter of race and ethnicity and we don’t enact truly color-blind policies, then the good life this country leads is truly fucked.

As far as alienating the hispanics that are already here...didn't you see the rallies in LA at MacArthur Park? Haven't you seen the schools where the hispanics fly the Mexican flag over the Stars and Stripes? The hispanics are intent on one objective and it's NOT assimilation, it's revachism. They have defined it that way, not the white cracker Gabacho.

Next time you're in LA go on down to the barrio, park your car, and just breath free. You won't last ten minutes...same way in South Central,Watts,Compton and a dozen more places....head on out to Detroit and walk the streets. Or Dearborn Mich.
It's not the WASP's who are doing the discrimination thing to any degree, it's the other cultures who have for the past twenty plus years NOT assimilated and have NO intention of doing so.

And for the record, the "good life in this country" is already fucked.

The local developer wants your home for a new devlopment that will generate more taxes..he wins..you lose...and not at fair market value. Lets say your home is on the market for $500,000. An article runs in the paper that a new mall and townhouse complex is gonna be built right on you and your neighbors land ...your new market value is now maybe $100,000...maybe...all legal thanks to the Kelo decision.

Rodney King gets whup assed by the LA cops ... a week of riots ensue where Koreans are attacked and a huge section of town burned and stores looted...57 people died..did the police or national guard move in to stop it?...hell no, they just cordon off the area and let it happen. Seems like those 57 got shortchanged in the civil rights arena.

Do you really think it would be any different in any metro area where there is a heavy concentration of an unassimilated population?

So you are asking for WASP forbearance with repect to hispanics who have none for us or me , I don't know what your ethnicity is.

When hispanics call me Gabacho, or a black calls me a cracker I'm just suppose to suck it up and let white guilt guide my actions ..sorry but that ship sailed a long time ago.

If this Illegal/Amnesty bill gets passed we should have this conversation again in about five years, when every social service in this country is broke and with the Democrats in power tax rates will be back where they were back in the day ...at 90%.

I think it would depend on the case, because I'd avoid giving the bean counters a carte blanche to take off with statistics (this is effectively what's done to allow blanket anti-discimination cases against corporations, even where discrimination was never proven). In general, however, it is irrational to ignore obvious indicators and is basic police work. The outrage is also often only one way, for example there aren't any outcries when the police start saying that domestic terrorists (D.C. sniper shootings) and serial killers are "likely white males."

"Cutler, maybe you haven't noticed but with the advent of "hate crimes" we DO live in a nation where law is enforced by race, among the other "special" catagories that are popping up like weeds."

I oppose all of them, strongly. Crimes are crimes, period. Once you allow the law to distinguish between ethnicities, then it becomes a matter of spoils of politics rather than principle. Either you can discriminate against none or you can discriminate against all, no matter who's currently on top of the legal food chain.

"So you are asking for WASP forbearance with repect to hispanics who have none for us or me , I don't know what your ethnicity is.

When hispanics call me Gabacho, or a black calls me a cracker I'm just suppose to suck it up and let white guilt guide my actions ..sorry but that ship sailed a long time ago."

I think that everyone be held to the same standard, legally and morally, for the same behavior. Instead of adjusting the standard down, however, I'd move it up. Most of your gripes would fall under both those catagories. Rioters should be shot, Al Sharpton should be a pariah, and La Raza and anyone who supports it should be publicly flogged as much as any other Nazis. Racial politics and demagoguery should be frowned upon regardless of whether it is the NAACP, Lulac, or whatever.

Considering our current state, utopian almost. The fact that this behavior was also a part of our past, albeit not to this extent, suggests it'll never be perfect. But much closer to that I'd like.

Our great social experimentors are happy over the fact that America will look more and more like the world in the decades to come. My biggest fear is that its components will act like the world.

The Democratic senator said what the Bush administration touts as an ownership society really is an "on your own" society that has widened the gap between rich and poor.

"I prefer a 'we're all in it together' society," she said. "I believe our government can once again work for all Americans. It can promote the great American tradition of opportunity for all and special privileges for none."

The white man's guilt thing is well known in the black community and they actually factor it into their political equations. How many eleections have gone by in the last 40 years where the "race" card hasn't been played by a black candidate?
A white candidate is castrated for even tangentially speaking about race. To deny these things is to deny that the Sun is rather bright.

Having the law equally applied only exists in textbooks and conversations...the law is applied by lots of factors but few are ever applied equally.
OJ walked on jury nullification by an all black jury ...because he was black, pure and simple. Killed two people in cold blood and walked away.

Duke lacrosse team ..out of control DA grasping for the black communities vote.

Cutler, your motives are noble. We no longer live in a world where noble ideals have much currency. It is a sad thing.

The fastest growing segments of our population are the hispanics, asians, blacks, and islams.
With the exception of the asians the percentage of high school dropouts is huge and each of the remaining three groups have long standing grievances with the white culture.

It shapes up certainly as confrontation with Islam. Revanchism is driving the hispanics, and a politically vocal part of the black community demand reparations. That is the realpolitik.
