Judge in Alabama Forces Shoplifters to Wear 'I Am a Thief' Sign Outside Store
ATTALLA, Ala. (AP) -- Shoppers entering the Wal-Mart Supercenter here got a reminder not to try anything funny: Two shoplifters stood outside with signs reading "I am a thief, I stole from Wal-Mart."
Attalla City Judge Kenneth Robertson Jr. ordered the two people to wear the signs for four hours each during two successive Saturdays. Read the rest.
Finally, a punishment that not only fits the crime, but just might work. I have thinking for years that shop lifters should be forced to stand in the center court of the mall on Saturdays for all the world to see. We've forgotten what a powerful thing shame is. Bravo, to Judge Kenneth Robertson, Jr. Another punishment to consider: Public hangings on the Court House square with mandatory attendance by the local juvenile delinquents.

ReplyDeleteI am tempted to say, though I don't want to start an argument, or push the matter too far, that I am tempted to agree with the Bishop what'shisname from England, who was raked over the coals for saying in effect, 'why not? they are stealing from the employees all day long', in reference to a similar type chain store in jolly old England, and that the only thing this poor begger has really done wrong, is get caught. But I won't say that. I will say that I had a relative, nice person, who worked at Wal-Mart for quite some time, and they would never never give this person, or hardly anyone else, a forty hour week, so as to avoid providing health insurance for the valued employees, as they would otherwise have had to do. The other complaints often alleged about Wal-Mart are too well known to repeat, so I won't.

Question for Doug--do you know if Wal-Mart has been caught hiring illegal aliens? I am not sure about that question.
ReplyDeleteIn merry old England, during times of famine, the question often arose for the jury, shall we skewer this man for stealing a chicken with which to feed his family? The juries would often refuse to do so.

ReplyDeleteThis is bizarre. Illegal workers get fancy lawyer to sue Wal-Mart under RICO for hiring them. Shame on Wal-Mart, the illegals, and the lawyers.

ReplyDeleteLet's face it, consumers eying an HDTV are looking at the pricetag just as often, if not more often, than the picture quality, contrast ratio, or number of HDMI inputs. Companies like Vizio who have entered this cutthroat market and excelled have done so on price, and no one knows price better than Wal-Mart.
The mega-corp has been adamant about undercutting big box retailers, and while you aren't likely to walk into a Wally World electronics section and find the clean, uncluttered, and well-stocked shelves that a next door neighbor may have, you're likely to stomach the environment for a few minutes in order to save a few Benjamins. An MSNBC writeup took a look at how Wal-Mart's industry-leading price scheme is potentially hurting the other guys, and it even goes so far as to suggest that the recent store closings and layoffs at Circuit City, Tweeter, CompUSA, and Rex Stores were all triggered by the giant slashing prices to acquire razor-thin margins.
Of course, it's no secret that HDTV prices in general have been sinking like a stone over the past half year or so, and while the boutiques are banking on customers finally coughing up the extra dough for "knowledge staff" and better all-around service, we're betting that price still remains king in the land of HDTV.
