COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

In Marxian Fashion, The US Congress and George Bush will re-distribute Your Wealth.

(hattip: doug)
Millions of foreigners illegally break into the United States and the government that is supposed to represent you does nothing. It gets worse. For whatever reason, the US Government and the fool of a president are going to fix the problem by redistributing your wealth, your heritage and forever change the country while America watches American Idol.

I listened to the debate between Senators Kyl and Kennedy. Kennedy is the same buffoon he has always been and Kyl is a defeatist useful idiot. I don't want amendments, I want the thing scrapped and then start all over. There is only one person that can do that and I think that for the second time in his public service career that person is AWOL.

It is all up to George W. Bush. How the hell did this happen?

The Fiscal Cost of Low-Skill Immigrants to the U.S. Taxpayer

by Robert E. Rector and Christine Kim Heritage
Special Report #14
Each year, families and individuals pay taxes to the government and receive back a wide variety of services and benefits. A fiscal deficit occurs when the benefits and services received by one group exceed the taxes paid. When such a deficit occurs, other groups must pay for the services and benefits of the group in deficit. Each year, govern ment is involved in a large-scale transfer of resources between different social groups.

Fiscal distribution analysis measures the distribution of total government benefits and taxes in society. It pro vides an assessment of the magnitude of government transfers between groups. This paper provides a fiscal distri bution analysis of households headed by immigrants without a high school diploma. It measures the total benefits and services received by this group and the total taxes paid. The difference between benefits received and taxes paid represents the total resources transferred by government on behalf of this group from the rest of society.

The first step in an analysis of the distribution of benefits and taxes is to count accurately the cost of all benefits and services provided by the government. The size and cost of government is far larger than many people imagine. In fiscal year (FY) 2004, the expenditures of the federal government were $2.3 trillion. In the same year, expendi tures of state and local governments were $1.45 trillion. The combined value of federal, state, and local expenditures in FY 2004 was $3.75 trillion.[1]

The sum of $3.75 trillion is so large that it is difficult to comprehend. One way to grasp the size of government more readily is to calculate average expenditures per household. In 2004, there were some 115 million households in the U.S.[2] (This figure includes multi-person families and single persons living alone.) The average cost of govern ment spending thus amounted to $32,707 per household across the U.S. population.[3]

The $3.75 trillion in government expenditure is not free, but must be paid for by taxing or borrowing economic resources from Americans or by borrowing from abroad. In general, government expenditures are funded by taxes and fees. In FY 2004, federal taxes amounted to $1.82 trillion. State and local taxes and related revenues amounted to $1.6 trillion.[4] Together, federal, state, and local taxes amounted to $3.43 trillion. At $3.43 trillion, taxes and related revenues came to 91 percent of the $3.75 trillion in expenditures. The gap between taxes and spending was financed by government borrowing.

From 1990 to 2004, Hispanics accounted for 92 percent of the increase in poor people. Only 53 percent of Hispanics earn high school diplomas, the lowest among American ethnic groups. Half of all children born to Hispanic Americans in 2005 were born out of wedlock -- a reliable predictor of social pathologies.

  3. For those of you who believe I might only unleash my tongue on fellow bloggers from time to time here is the letter I emailed to Senator Mel Martinez (R) FL today:

    For what it's worth....

    Senor Senator Martinez,

I know you are a supported of allowing your ancestry free illegal passes to the USA, uncontrolled borders and further permitting the dilution of US citizenship. I however am not.

Closing ranks with Senator Kennedy is not a good idea. Going against the overwhelming number of citizens who are against your position is NOT a smart political move.

Most of us in our 60's have heard all the pablum regurgitate from politicians who attempt to cover their opprobrium by saying, "We are doing this for the good of the country".

Well Senator, that is crap, pure crap in this case.
You support building the fence that has been authorized and funded first, but that Mr. Chertoff just yesterday admitted not a mile of which has been built and then come back to the amnesty question in later years. Spend the wall building time to round up the illegals and deport them. That is your responsibility , not supporting laws that ex post facto erase felonies.

While the wall is being constructed I would recommend that you review your oath of office. Having 12-20 million illegals in this country, aided in their efforts to cross our borders by the Mexican government constitutes an act of war. If you do not recognize this as such then you should resign your office for aiding and abetting an offensive action against the United States. Perhaps a grass roots recall petition is in order. I do believe it would be no problem gaining the signatures required to accomplish this.

I would recommend you recalibrate your thinking on this issue and do the correct thing. Build the wall and get control of our borders first. Then deport the illegals. They will only bastardize and dilute the votes of those American citizens who follow the laws and support this country. You clearly are not doing the right thing and the opprobrium attaching itself to your name will not wash off.

As a final note should you support this bill I will do everything legal to defeat you at the polls. I am not without influence in my county having been a member of the Republican Executive Committee and past President of the Republican Men's Club.

Likely to Win Senate Approval [Kate O'Beirne]

Maybe I've been talking to a particularly pessimistic lot, but every Senate insider I have spoken with predicts that the immigration bill will be approved by the Senate with about 60 votes. That could change depending on how amendments go. But one veteran GOP aide just noted the "extraordinary process" Majority Leader Reid is presiding over. He is "slow-walking" amendments to prevent the consideration of multiple changes. After the Memorial Day recess, the expectation is that only a very limited number of amendments will be permitted and there aren't the 41 votes necessary to insist on a more open process. There's some grousing about the Republican leadership's apparent reluctance to demand that their members be permitted to offer all their legitimate, substantive amendments.

  17. Doug,

The Heritage Foundation ( for those bloggers who are unfamiliar with HF it is a very pro Republican think tank in DC) came out yesterday and said theat this Immigration /Amnesty Bill will cost 2.7 TRILLION DOLLARS in the next five years...TRILLION FOLKS...that's your money ..Marxist redistribution.

And since Bush allowed 12 million of the illegals in on his watch I think we need to think IMPEACMENT....and I have been a life long Republican but that is an act of clearly allowing alien forces to invade our country, which is obviously inimical to the security of this country.

If Bush is going that way, which is now a fait accompli then the sonofabitch deserves to be IMPEACHED and found GUILTY and removed from office.

Federal criminals represent 10% of those living here. That is poor security, on a Federal level.

Mr Bush is correct, his failures in Iraq have led to the criminals being here. The Army should be defending the US border, not the Iraqi/Syrian border.

Only 30 folks per month, reportedly, infiltrate across the Iraqi/Syrian border each month. Over 3,000 infiltrate across the US Border each day.

Border control is a national security issue of the first order, but political leaders in both parties have turned it into a human-rights/humanitarian issue in their cynical and unrelenting pursuit of votes. Moreover, the tens of billions of dollars that the federal government has spent since 9/11 to fill official border-crossing points with cutting-edge electronic detection gear will be effective only if the Islamist fighters are stupid enough to enter the United States via official checkpoints. Unfortunately, al-Qaeda and its allies have shown themselves to be anything but stupid. Carrying on the tradition of his father and Mr. Clinton, President Bush has allowed the borders to remain open, thereby ensuring that (a) all levels of U.S. law enforcement will be overwhelmed by a pool of undocumented aliens that grows every hour, and (b) there is no serious impediment to our Islamist foes' inserting operatives into the United States.

At day's end, then, the counterterrorism record of the Bush administration is resoundingly negative: two wars (nearly) lost, thousands of lives sacrificed, immense amounts of money spent, U.S. military credibility at low ebb, domestic political unity shattered, and an Islamist enemy more powerful and motivated today than on the day in 2001 that Mr. Bush swore his first oath of office. But the Bush administration's failings should be understood for what they are -- part of a continuum of negative accomplishments stretching back more than a decade.

Unable to adjust to a world of lethal transnational threats and unwilling to square with Americans the reasons behind why Islamists are at war with us, the contemporary bipartisan governing generation has left the United States in a dangerous position. We are a country weary of war and its costs, and unprepared to accept that our war against Islamist militancy has barely commenced. At the same time, al-Qaeda, its allies, and an overwhelming number of the world's Muslims are about to be thrilled and powerfully motivated by the defeat of the second superpower on the Iraqi battlefield. Flush with victory, our enemies will then confront Americans with renewed vigor, fully supported by their only two indispensable allies -- the Islamic faith and the U.S. foreign policy status quo.

Of course, the question is often a tricky matter of deciding whether bad judgment led to bad conclusions, or bad conclusions lead to the bad judgment (wishful thinking).

  107. Compromise Has Little Public Support

Since I still have a membership at Rasmussen, I have access to the crosstabs -- and they tell a very interesting story. Not a single demographic in the study favors this proposal, except under Race:Other.

If the architects of the comprehensive immigration reform plan expected to reap political favor for their ability to reach a bipartisan compromise, they will find themselves disappointed. A Rasmussen study shows that a near-majority oppose the plan altogether, with the rest split between acceptance and uncertainty:

Initial public reaction to the immigration proposal being debated in the Senate is decidedly negative.
A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey conducted Monday and Tuesday night shows that just 26% of American voters favor passage of the legislation. Forty-eight percent (48%) are opposed while 26% are not sure. The bi-partisan agreement among influential Senators and the White House has been met with bi-partisan opposition among the public. The measure is opposed by 47% of Republicans, 51% of Democrats, and 46% of those not affiliated with either major party.

The next part of the report shows that Congress as a whole may have missed the pulse of the nation. Instead of focusing on normalization, they could improve their standing immensely -- in both parties -- by addressing border security as a primary and separate initiative:

The enforcement side of the debate is clearly where the public passion lies on the issue. Seventy-two percent (72%) of voters say it is Very Important for “the government to improve its enforcement of the borders and reduce illegal immigration.” That view is held by 89% of Republicans, 65% of Democrats, and 63% of unaffiliated voters.
In view of these numbers, tackling the problem in an integrated manner is a huge mistake on both sides of the aisle. The notion that the border issue cannot be divorced from addressing the status of the extant illegals only seems to hold true inside the Beltway. In the rest of the nation, voters appear to easily distinguish between the two -- and probably wonder why their elected representatives cannot.

Since I still have a membership at Rasmussen, I have access to the crosstabs -- and they tell a very interesting story. Not a single demographic in the study favors this proposal, except under Race:Other. Democrats oppose it 51-28. Republicans oppose it 47-25. Men and women both clearly oppose it. Only people ages 30-39 come close to overcoming opposition, 34-32 in opposition.

But when the subject turns to border security, the numbers turn even more dramatic. Every single demographic -- race, gender, age, and political orientation -- has majorities that show border security as "very important". The only one below 60% is Race:Other again, but almost all of the others score in the 70s or higher. While a number of demographics score the importance of legalizing illegal aliens as at least somewhat important, it carries far less enthusiasm than border security.

The data is so compelling, one has to wonder why Congress hasn't realized that they could offer a win for everyone by focusing exclusively on border security as an entrée to immigration reform. They literally would please every possible constituency by doing so, and would almost overnight dial down the emotion over the rest of the issue. Only in DC could the governing class be so out of touch with the national mood.

UPDATE: The news is not all bad for comprehensive reform. From the Rasmussen summary:

Still, 65% of voters would be willing to support a compromise including a “very long path to citizenship” provided that “the proposal required the aliens to pay fines and learn English” and that the compromise “would truly reduce the number of illegal aliens entering the country.” The proposal, specifically described as a compromise, was said to include “strict employer penalties for hiring illegal aliens, building a barrier along the Mexican border and other steps to significantly reduce the number of illegal aliens entering the United States.”
It would seem that the key would be to win the confidence of the voters that this bill really does those things. If it does and it does it plainly and with border enforcement first (along with "a barrier along the Mexican border"), then there is obvious support for it. There's a lot more for handling this in two completely separate phases, though, which seems to undermine the notion that only a comprehensive plan can unite the nation. Clearly, a borders-only bill to start would have tremendous support, given the data here.

  108. American Muslims Support Homicide Bombings

    * More than one in four Muslims (or 26%), aged 18-29, said "Suicide Bombing is Justified." 2% percent of them say it can often be justified, 13% say sometimes, and 11% say rarely. Add to that, the 5% don't know/refused to answer this easy, instinctive question, and it's even worse--for a total of 31%--almost a third of young American Muslims, who support homicide bombings. This younger group of Muslims is the most radical, the study found, and it's the largest group of Muslims in America. It is also the future of "America's" Islam.

    * 12% of foreign-born Arab Muslims said that "Suicide Bombing Can be Justified Often/Sometimes." That's more than one in ten. 10% of them don't know/refused to answer. That's a total of 22% who apparently support homicide bombings. That's more than one in five and almost one in four. Yup, if you meet an Arab Muslim on the streets of America, it's a likely one in four chance he/she supports homicide bombings.

    * 8% of all U.S. Muslims said suicide bombing is justified. Add to that the 9% that don't know/refused to answer, and you get 17%, almost 1 in 5 American Muslims. For all foreign-born U.S. Muslims, 9% support suicide bombings--plus 9% refusing to answer, and it's 18%. For all native-born U.S. Muslims, it's 8% who support the bombings, plus 5% who refused to respond--for a total of 13%. Yup, being born and raised in the U.S. isn't the moderating force it's cracked up to be . . . if you're raised in the Islamic faith.

Here we are quietly building socialism in one country, our country, and now we are bringing in the proletariat from another country, rather than supporting the revolution there. This thing makes sense from the point of view of the Mexican exploiting classes, to shove potential insurgents out the door, but if we are to help the proletariat in another country sound doctrine dictates action there not here. My dialectical training indicates we are weakening ourselves, and strengthening the Mexican ruling class. Me no sabe. Thought is the curse of the drinking class.

  117. Audio: The pro-amnesty hotline [Connects you straight to your senator’s office]
    Hot Air ^ | 5/24/07 | Bryan

Posted on 05/24/2007 7:36:06 PM PDT by PajamaTruthMafia

We received emails about this all day, but being on the road prevented me from posting anything about it until now. Here’s the story: There is a hotline that has been set up to allow pro-amnesty Spanish speakers to call their senators to voice support for the “comprehensive immigration reform” currently being considered in Congress. The hotline’s number is 800-882-2005, and is answered by a very helpful recording that instructs its callers to say “Support immigration reform that protects families and workers” in English. It also automatically tells you your senator’s name and after a couple of button pushes, connects you straight to your senator’s office. I tried it today and got through to my senator’s office in less than a minute by pushing 1 when the recording started and then 1 again a few seconds later.

If you’d like a little perspective on just how useful this number is, just trying getting through to your senators through the capitol switchboard. Grab a snack, because you’ll probably be there a while.

Here’s a rough recording of one of the calls I made to test the line. Give it a good half minute after the initial Skype beeping to hear the line pick up and the recording kick in.

The hotline is paid for by something called the Coalition for Comprehensive Immigration Reform and it’s being blasted to pro-open borders groups all over the country. The hotline gives its callers access to their senators that average Joes don’t have.

Well, until now anyway. I used it to register opposition to the immigration bill. Thank you, CCIR!

More: I forgot to mention that if you hit a 1 first and then a 2, you should get your junior senator. A 1 and then a 1 gets your senior senator.

  120. Q. Why are we having this debate?

    A. The government estimates that there are about 12 million people living in the United States illegally now. Because an illegal worker can't press for fair wages and safe working conditions without risking his or her livelihood, their presence in the workforce tends to depress wages and working conditions for some Americans.

    Q. When would the bill take effect?

    A. People living illegally in the USA who want to attain legal status may apply as soon as the bill becomes law, but other parts of the bill, including a guest-worker program designed to allow more foreigners to work temporarily in the USA, could not take effect until certain "triggers" are in place.

    Q. How would this legislation affect legal residents?

    A. All Americans would be required to show proof of legal status when they apply for a job. The bill would require potential hires to present a U.S. passport or a drivers' license and a newer, more secure Social Security card when they apply for work.
