COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Immigration bill would doom American way of life

Commentary by E.J. O'Brien

It is ironic that on Memorial Day, when we honored those who served to defend the American way of life, there is a cabal in Washington, D.C., that seeks to destroy it. In my 50 years of observing politics, this so-called Immigration Reform Bill in Congress is the most egregious affront to our constitution I have ever witnessed.

Our elected representatives no longer represent the American electorate. Because of gerrymandering and other legislative chicanery, the desire of the people is irrelevant. With re-election assured, our members of Congress are free to toady to the paying special interests.

Will Rogers said decades ago that “We have the best Congress money can buy.” That is true now more than ever, aided and abetted by the academic left that sees nothing special in the American culture. These allied forces are on the verge of insidiously destroying our country.

If this Immigration Bill, as it is horrifically constituted, becomes law, our American way of life is doomed. All that countless Americans have fought and died for will be destroyed, not in a cataclysmic blast as the terrorists hope for, but in a slow cultural and economic decline.

Our inundated and overwhelmed schools will no longer be able to teach, and our abysmal educational system will decline further into irrelevance. This may not matter to those in Congress, who are well-heeled enough to enable their families to attend the finest private schools to become well-educated and, hence, competitive in today's world.

The already insolvent Social Security system cannot survive an influx of millions of non-contributing, and uneducated aliens. The result is that the tax burden on the middle class will marginalize even the most productive citizens, since they will be expected to take up the slack for the unproductive. If saving Social Security is our aim, we should be bringing in millions of well-educated, highly-paid people, not the exact opposite.

South of our border, the narco army may already be too powerful for the corrupted Mexican government to control. The violence is now spilling across our own borders as carnage mounts. Thirty-five percent of the U.S. prison population is composed of aliens, and there are hundreds of thousands of un-apprehended felons wandering our streets. (Incidentally, if you read the fine print, the proposed Immigration Bill would, in effect, make them legal! )

Our cities and towns - yes, even Santa Barbara, Santa Maria and Lompoc - will gradually slip into anarchy, as local law enforcement is unable to cope. How many gang murders will it take to tip the scales?

The monetary price tag for this Immigration Bill is estimated to be in the trillions, but the cost to the fabric of our nation is incalculable. If you thought our political elites (Democrats and Republicans) lied about the authorization for war in Iraq, that measure pales in comparison to the authorization of an Immigration Bill capable of destroying our republic.

Rational analysis of this Immigration Bill is hard to come by in the media. I do not believe the bill would survive objective scrutiny by the American people. Perhaps that is why those who champion it are trying to rush its passage through Congress, after which it would immediately become the law of the land.

Like the other “grand compromise” amnesty legislation in years past, rest assured it will be one law that as many as 20 million illegal aliens in this country willingly embrace, even if it means falsifying the scant documentation needed to climb aboard.

Some of our older, now almost forgotten, Americans had a thing or two to say. There were a good number of them, may they live in our memory.

H.L. Mencken being one of them. Whether or not you agree with all he said, he did have a way with words, and got off his ass, and said something.

  2. Right on the money Deuce...life as we know it in this country will change so rapidly that, hell I can't even come up with an imaginative metaphor.

It would also appear that with the Chairman of the RNC's statement of last week that the Republicans were WAY behind the curve in internet usage/expertise and now the firing of the phone bank staff the Republicans haad better find some techno-yalent in a hurry.

Because everybody broke out of the box early this presidential cycle it's easy to lose site of the fact that the election is 17 months away so there is time for a Richard Mellon Scaife to step up and fund some high cost items. The talent is out there for the right price.

Also each candidate must navigate life for the next 17 months. Things happen. Campaigning means lots of airplane time and if gravity can get Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper it can get any of them..just takes two mistakes.

We also haven't come close to the trash season of campaigns when the stuff (true or not) starts to leak out about roasted puppies and cross dressing candidates. But as sure as the sun rises it'll come, the radiate glow of the campaign lies.

Except for this Amnesty bill which we can kill in the House if we keep the pressure on there's only the threat of nuclear war,Pakistani coups, NBC attacks, Mexican (notice I didn't say wetbacks)revanchism, global warming, another season of American Idol and 24, we got nutt'in to worry 'bout or occupy our time.We be breez'in

I've been a big H.L fan for well over fifteen year..read the chrestomathy, The American Language, and about five others ..you can get a taste of him if you rent the movie "Inherit the Wind", a GREAT MOVIE with Spencer Tracy,Gene Kelly as H.L.Menchen, and Fredric March...all about creationism, the Scopes trail pitting Clarence Darrow (Spencer Tracy) against William Jennings Bryan (Fredrick March) and Kelley doing a great H.L.Menchen who covered it for the Baltimore Sun...

But Menchen was at his best when he wrote for The American Mercury and covered presidential conventions...calling them a Carnival of Buncombe.

Scared? Gee - can you blame us? An estimated twelve million people can drag our government around by the gonads and get anything it wants. Most political scientists call this type of goverment an "Oligarchy" and it's known for it's terrible treatment of it's citizens.

Any criticism of the new protected class gets you condemned publically.

"Some people just don't like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border. They think Latinos are freeloaders and welfare cheats who are too lazy to learn English. They think Latinos have too many babies, and that Latino kids will dumb down our schools. They think Latinos are dirty, diseased, indolent and more prone to criminal behavior. They think Latinos are just too different from us ever to become real Americans."
    ---
Okay - making a gross generalization about Hispanics, Latinos and other people south of the border is racist. So what about making gross generalizations about people *north* of the border (for example, suggesting that they 'just don't like Mexicans'?)

Oh right, whites aren't really a race and even if they were they have it coming so racial prejudice against them doesn't hurt anything.

Of course we argue with Latino groups over immigration policy: Latino groups have made themselves the face of the immigration debate. And by far and large you're getting your way. Most of Congress and the President wants to give you what you want. It's only a minority killing this stuff in committees that prevents it from becoming law.

Our government is supposed to follow the will of the majority. There isn't a poll around (push or otherwise) that has a majority of Americans favoring lax immigration policy. Some of the highest numbers opposed to weak immigration laws are amongst legal immigrants themselves. And you think our government is giving illegals a raw deal? You're a part of the government.

We have a population of people coming here - a minority population (that means you're outnumbered). You have come here uninvited. You demand that we speak your language. You demand that we change our schools to teach what you think is important. You want access to all the laws you like: welfare, housing subsidies, college subsidies, social security and so on. You think the laws you don't like shouldn't apply: immigration laws, auto registrations, tax laws, and so on. You're bringing strange diseases all but unknown with you. Some of you are murderers, rapists and other violent offenders. Our elected officials are attempting to give you what you want *and I'm the racist?!*

  6. Doug ,
Here's my take on the race deal.

We allow students from all over the world to study at our universities. Most of them get grants to do so. They either brain their way or quota their way into Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. That doesn't even count the ones who come from the rich families around the world who also come here to learn.

They have the advantage of going to the best business schools in the world or other disciplines that they desire to study.

    So my question is this.
How do these nations, and lets use Mexico as an example since they are invading our country illegally, not make any forward progress? Why are they still neanderthal in comparison to the USA..we even send trillions of dollars in aid all over the world and they still remain tribal and stone age. I mean what the fuck is going on?

Why aren't they taking the knowledge back to the Motherland and putting it to work? We're not talking about this problem just cropping up it's been like forever they've been living in adobe huts with no running water ..hey this is 2007, what the hell have they been doing down in Mexico since we kicked their ass over a hundred years ago?
It's not racism that we have it's called self preservation of the lifestyle we work 55-60 hour weeks to get. We know what will happen if they come north and stay..the entire culture will be diluted, dumbed down. We already have a surplus of home grown dumb down to have sufficiently fucked up the country since 1956. We don't need any more dumbing down, especially in a foreign language.

And concomitant with the dumb down will come the social services stress and a call for higher taxes..higher productivity will not be possible to cover the 12-20 million who will cost WAY more than they pay in taxes.

And it will be an irreversible process because the politicians will buy their votes with our money...tax freedom day will be just before Thanksgiving provided we're allowed to celebrate it.

It would appear that almost universally around the globe it is the white societies that are going forward in spite of our helping our brown brothers and sistas as much as we can ..is it racist to work hard and then protect what your labor has produced? .... yes if you are a Marxist and private property is the enemy ..so we are Mexicos enemy...because they are in full revanchist mode and have their eyes on your home hombre.

Nurse, mas margarita en la rocas por favor.

  7. I guess it's a measure of the EXTENT of corruption of our government, that 12 million illegals can be used as a pretext for the elites to sell everything our ancestors fought, sacrificed, and died for down the river.

Telling the legal citizens to go to Hell if they dare complain.

    Coulter:
"Hispanics in this country have a 50 percent illegitimacy rate, the highest teen pregnancy rate of any group and the highest high school drop-out rate of any group...

To the contrary, immigrants are replacing American culture with Latin American culture. Their apparent constant need to demonstrate is just one example.

  9. cool hand carlos--that subject about why it never seems to get better is a topic I have discussed with my Lutheran pastor, a good dude. His son, he told me , was the best 'bee' man in Africa. He knew everything about bees, and how to work with them, all about the biology, all of it. He spent years there, and finally came home. My pastor told me , damn I'm glad he's back. He told me, Bob, I think we should concentrate our efforts here, we have plenty of problems here. He just didn't think it would work. We have another pastor now, who is just the other way, thinking let's get out there and help.

Well, it goes round and round. I don't know why it does not seem to get better. I think that they have to develope legal systems that really mean something, and have force, before progress can be made. Without that, I think it is a tough row to hoe.

We around here have taken our legal system seriously. There are the wealthy and the poorer, and I don't like that, but without a really functioning legal system, I don't think they will make much progress.

I would start there, with a functioning legal system, that has teeth, and is fair in its procedures.

    NOONAN: BUSH RIPS, SPLITS CONSERVATIVES...

    Too Bad
President Bush has torn the conservative coalition asunder.

What political conservatives and on-the-ground Republicans must understand at this point is that they are not breaking with the White House on immigration. They are not resisting, fighting and thereby setting down a historical marker--"At this point the break became final." That's not what's happening. What conservatives and Republicans must recognize is that the White House has broken with them. What President Bush is doing, and has been doing for some time, is sundering a great political coalition. This is sad, and it holds implications not only for one political party but for the American future.

The White House doesn't need its traditional supporters anymore, because its problems are way beyond being solved by the base. And the people in the administration don't even much like the base. Desperate straits have left them liberated, and they are acting out their disdain. Leading Democrats often think their base is slightly mad but at least their heart is in the right place. This White House thinks its base is stupid and that its heart is in the wrong place.

For almost three years, arguably longer, conservative Bush supporters have felt like sufferers of battered wife syndrome. You don't like endless gushing spending, the kind that assumes a high and unstoppable affluence will always exist, and the tax receipts will always flow in? Too bad! You don't like expanding governmental authority and power? Too bad. You think the war was wrong or is wrong? Too bad.

But on immigration it has changed from "Too bad" to "You're bad."

The president has taken to suggesting that opponents of his immigration bill are unpatriotic--they "don't want to do what's right for America." His ally Sen. Lindsey Graham has said, "We're gonna tell the bigots to shut up." On Fox last weekend he vowed to "push back." Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff suggested opponents would prefer illegal immigrants be killed; Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said those who oppose the bill want "mass deportation." Former Bush speechwriter Michael Gerson said those who oppose the bill are "anti-immigrant" and suggested they suffer from "rage" and "national chauvinism."

The beginning of my own sense of separation from the Bush administration came in January 2005, when the president declared that it is now the policy of the United States to eradicate tyranny in the world, and that the survival of American liberty is dependent on the liberty of every other nation. This was at once so utopian and so aggressive that it shocked me. For others the beginning of distance might have been Katrina and the incompetence it revealed, or the depth of the mishandling and misjudgments of Iraq.

What I came in time to believe is that the great shortcoming of this White House, the great thing it is missing, is simple wisdom. Just wisdom--a sense that they did not invent history, that this moment is not all there is, that man has lived a long time and there are things that are true of him, that maturity is not the same thing as cowardice, that personal loyalty is not a good enough reason to put anyone in charge of anything, that the way it works in politics is a friend becomes a loyalist becomes a hack, and actually at this point in history we don't need hacks.

  13. "Now conservatives and Republicans are going to have to win back their party.
They are going to have to break from those who have already broken from them. This will require courage, serious thinking and an ability to do what psychologists used to call letting go.
This will be painful, but it's time.
    It's more than time.

  17. Victor Davis Hanson takes a look at the bigger picture in the immigration debate: the global picture.

Hypocrisy abounds on all sides. Free-marketers claim they must have cheap workers to stay competitive. Yet they also count on public subsidies to take care of their former employees when old, sick or in trouble.

The lower middle classes complain most about massive immigration, but then they have to compete with aliens for jobs, often live among them and don't use their services. The wealthier, who hire immigrants for low wages and see them only at work, often think mass immigration, even if illegal, is wonderful.

It is past time to remember that paying our own poorer laborers more, doing some occasional physical work and obeying the laws - the immigration ones especially - are not icky or a bummer. Rather, this is the more ethical and, in the long run, cheaper approach.

There is a final irony. The more Western elites ignore their own laws, allow unassimilated ethnic ghettos and profit from an exploitive labor market, the more their own nations will begin to resemble the very places immigrants fled from.

WASHINGTON -- Beware legislative behemoths. Beware "comprehensive immigration reform." Any bill that is 380 pages long is bound to have nooks and crannies reflecting private deals, quiet paybacks and ad hoc arrangements that you often don't learn about until it's too late.

Until now we've had a special category for highly skilled, world-renowned and indispensable talent.
Great musicians, athletes and high-tech managers come in today under the EB-1 visa.
This apparently is going to be abolished in the name of an idiotic egalitarianism.

The price for this lurch into rationality appears to be the abolition of the VIP fast track, which constitutes less than 2 percent of total immigration and, from the point of view of the national interest, is the most valuable. This staggeringly stupid idea is reason alone to vote against the immigration bill.

    But Charles cites many more.
