COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

I Guess Things Could Be Worse For Republicans.

Well the upside is that the webventure I started up last month is picking up some serious steam.
The burqas and used prayer rugs are flying off of the shelves this morning. Anybody know of any good sources for bulk blue fabric? Would prefer something slightly see through....it will be all the rage on the left coast...for a while anyway.

  2. Some talking head on FOX says that America has not "fundementaly changed"

Well, here in AZ we used to have a single Dem representitive, out of four. Now we have we have four out of eight. Growth?

So maybe America remains unchanged, but not AZ

  3. If Senator Allen was ever the stuff of Presidential timber, he will concede today. Nothing happened in Virginia that would call into question the integrity of the outcome.

For the good of the United States, this election needs to conclude in the old fashioned way, i.e. without lawyers and the courts.

So let Africa be written off, aas we will soon write off the ME..

Leave 'em to AIDS,Ebola,Dengue Fever and all the other afflictions they can't conquer.
I vote for Ebola as #1.

  6. Allen ,
I agree. We can't let take root a judicial decision for every close election.

But then the North American Union will solve a lot of those nasty problems.

  8. Well, Allen has answered the question of his patriotism: he will fight to the bloody end. If Mr. Allen could show irregularites of such nature and degree to rise to the level of fraud, I'd say more power to him. He cannot.

  24. redaktør,

    re: 18 divisions

I don't know how you came to the conclusion that I have some plan for 18 divisions. My response to Wretchard addressed only the fact that the Army's reduction was bi-partisan. The slashing of 40,000 Air Force active duty positions over the next 3 years is entirely the creature of the Bush administration.

You are, of course, correct: 18 divisions are unnecessary to the utter destruction of Iran. Courage is absolutely indispensable.

We must work together for the children.

    War!

With or without the courage of the Israeli elite. Probably within weeks.

What did courage have to do with various Israeli governments kowtowing to US pressure?

Hezbollah and Syria should have been killed and/or permanently disabled this spring. The timidity of Olmert et al. will cost the blood of Israelis to make things right.

  41. I'd like to respond to buddy Larson's diatribe about hate.

I believe that hatred is a very personal thing. Therefore there are as many styles of hatred as their are styles of golf or even, God save us, bowling.

My personal hatred style revolves around two important dimensions: focus and totality.

since hatred requires significant personal resource and such resource is finite, to thoroughly and completely hate a person takes a lot of strength. Therefore I can only truly hate a few people at a time. Maybe four or five folks, max.

so if a new person, let's call him Ash, comes along that might be worthy of my hatred I must decide who I will cease hating in order to commence the new hatred.

Such policy decisions are difficult and arbitrary, but again I live in a world of finite resource.

So, in summary, I hate only a few people, but I despise them thoroughly and completely. I have a process in place for managing this emotion and a policy of externally triggered periodic review.

sorry Mr Larson, but I see nothing half assed about my hatred.

but please don't hate me for it.

  47. bĕn yĕhū'dă,

    re: "we"

That depends on the antecedent(s) of "we".

The US will go its own way. At this writing, it looks like Iran will get its nuke.

Israel, as usual will find itself, at the end of the day, on its own. Hamas, Hezbollah, and Syria are determined to make the coming struggle existential. Israel must act accordingly, with ruthlessness, such as the shelling into Gaza yesterday that killed 18 Palestinians. By the way not much is being said about that.

  50. But that's the problem. Hate is like grammar. Verbs are all fine and dandy but it takes an object to really get things going.

I understand the issue with the adverse health impact. I faced a similar choice: I could hate or I could smoke cigarettes. Since I've never seen any definite studies that concluded that haters died because of their hatred, I quit those unfiltered camels and focused on my ex wife's putative attorney.

This actually worked pretty well because in order to hate that bastard I decided to stop hating my ex wife. The benefits to our children derived from this sage choice are too numerous to name.
