COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Who Did It? The List of Suspects is Endless.

Its been 38 years since Robert Kennedy was assassinated and Sirhan Sirhan has never revealed if anyone other than himself was behind the murder. Like any infamous, unsolved murder the conspiracy theories abound.

Just as Emilio Estevez' homage to Bobby Kennedy is about to come out in North America, the BBC has "uncovered new evidence" that the CIA played a role in Kennedy's death.
New video and photographic evidence that puts three senior CIA operatives at the scene of Robert Kennedy's assassination has been brought to light. The evidence was shown in a report by Shane O'Sullivan, broadcast on BBC Newsnight.

It reveals that the operatives and four unidentified associates were at the Ambassador Hotel, Los Angeles in the moments before and after the shooting on 5 June, 1968. The CIA had no domestic jurisdiction and some of the officers were based in South-East Asia at the time, with no reason to be in Los Angeles.
It appears that we have entered a post cold-war period of global instability and transition marked with terror and assassinations. Political entities jockey for position in what they see as a favorable climate of indifference, confusion or fear. It is in such a climate that rumors and disinformation are sown on fertile ground where they flourish like weeds and choke-out the flowers of truth.

Already, Alexander Litvinenko's death has been said by some to be a suicide staged for maximum effect. The presence of radioactive material in his body has prompted speculation that he had been treated for cancer. After being fingered for the murder of Lebanese politician Pierre Gemayel, the Syrians pointed to the Jews. Others have said that the United States had the most to gain and is behind the assassination.

Conspiracy theorists blame the CIA for the death of the two Kennedys. Cedar Revolutionaries blame Syria. In Iraq, Sunnis blame Shia and Shia blame Sunni. Iraq's government blames al-Qaeda. The Afghanis blame Pakistan. The Indians blame Pakistan. EB and La Russophobe blame Putin, Leftists and paleo-cons blame Bush and apparently, George Bush no longer blames anyone.

  2. I think this latest round of Sunni/Shia tit-for-tat is going to be brutal.

Ap is reporting Shiite militiamen doused six Sunni Arabs with kerosene and burned them alive as Iraqi soldiers stood by, and killed 19 other Sunnis in attacks on their mosques Friday, taking revenge for the slaughter of at least 215 Shiites in the Sadr City slum the day before.

Oh, I get it, sort of like saying on a blog, "I'm taking my marbles and going home!" but without the option of creating another login.

Then again, the very act of looking into the death of the 13th journalist to die under the Putin regime is radioactive. One wonders why the Fourth Estate is not all up in arms.

  9. As for Tiger post at "Observanda" about Achmed's unqualified certainty that he will be rewarded in heaven with 72 dark-eyed virgins, I commented:

What's this part about "Dark eyed?"

Are "dark-eyed" goats more amorous than goats with lighter colored eyes?

Brazil's population is over 186 million people, while Iraq has barely 26 million people. And Brazil is a pretty violent place. So I'm not sure what the comparison is supposed to imply.

And DC is a city, Iraq is a country.
    Or was.
