COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Fewer than 25 Living WWI Vets

He wasn't a "dough boy" but this 111 year old swabbie veteran of World War One died last week in Florida.
BRADENTON, Fla. — Ernest Charles Pusey, one of the nation's longest living World War I veterans, died a little over a week after he was honored with a medal for his service to the country, family members said. He was 111.

Pusey's death Sunday left fewer than 25 living U.S. veterans of World War I out of nearly 5 million who served, according to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"I was deeply saddened to learn that Mr. Pusey had passed away. It was my privilege to meet with him," Gov. Jeb Bush said in a news release. "We should not forget him, and other veterans, who sacrificed so much for this country."

The governor had presented Pusey with a World War I Victory Medal on Nov. 10, the day before Veterans Day. Pusey didn't recall receiving a medal after the war, and nobody could find any evidence that he had.

During the ceremony at Pusey's trailer, the veteran talked to Bush about his time on the USS Wyoming during the war, and "stopping at different cities out there."

A black-and-white photo of the battleship hung on the wall of his trailer near a framed letter of congratulations from President Bush, and the president's brother added the glass-encased medal to a table near Pusey's recliner.

Pusey was born in 1895 in Washington. He joined the Navy in 1917 and spent much of the war patrolling the sea lanes around the British Isles.

Here's a google search on other some the other WWI vets who passed away in the past year or so.

  1. When I was a boy, I remember a story about the last Civil War vet dying. I would be mighty grateful to hear of the last Hippy dying.

  3. You know, I think C4 may invoke valid first principles, i.e. that Israel and America are each out for their own interests and these interests are not necessarily complimentary.

But I just don't get how those first principles lead to the betrayal of Israel he spiritedly advocates.

I guess I raise only a moral point, not being learned in strategy, but if there is some mechanism resulting in awesome gains in American power by distancing ourselves from Israel, I'm unaware.

I feel like C4 suffers the same problems that befell the underpants gnomes.

  4. hmm, maybe4 has his own channel?

Futaba made radios for the planes we used to race:
Wonder if there's a market for
    RC C-4'?

4chan (Japanese: Yotsuba, lit. "four leaves" Channel) is an English language imageboard, based on the famous Japanese imageboard Futaba Channel.

    Kenny's Death
Kenny is crushed to death in the Underpants Gnomes' underground lair when one of their trolley carts falls on him. Stan and Kyle deliver their trademark "Oh my God, they killed Kenny" speech as if they're not particularly troubled by the incident. The gnomes, however, are very concerned and don't seem to understand why Stan and Kyle are unfazed by the death of their friend.

    The Underpants Gnomes song
Time to go to work! Work all night!
    Search for underpants hey!
We won't stop until we have underpants!
    Yum tum yummy tum hey!

  5. hu dat & doug,

Good grief, just when things start to lighten up a bit, you two have to go negative and introduce one of history's greatest virtual, quasi-child tragedies. My disappoint with this turn of events ranks up there with the utterly devastating loss of Catholic Woman's continued correspondence.

Blue, blue, my world is blue
Blue is my world, if I can't piss you.

  6. Allen,

Sometimes you seem so vulnerable that I just want to hug you and squeeze you until the world doesn't seem so crazy anymore.

  7. hu dat,

I truly am a super-sensitive guy. If I could overcome my BDS, all would be well. Sadly, I am not a sponge.

Woman Catholic, a.k.a. Teresita, has left both the EB and the BC for good. I admit, she said I had personally attacked her once too often. I shall miss her until her return tomorrow; as you may have noticed, you just can't keep a good exhibitionist down.
While I'm sure you mean it in the best possible way, forget the hugging and squeezing; instead, send money - that always works for me. Sure, I know, money can't buy love, but I can live with a reasonably close approximation.

    Your Pal, loveable Uncle Al
