COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

And They Are Off! 2008 Running of the Washington Stakes.

There are many stories to this election, but the big one is voter dissatisfaction with their own party. That will determine the outcome. It is not so much the Republican's dislike for the Democrats as much as it is how much the Republicans dislike the Republicans. Less so with the Democrats. They thought they had spoken when they knocked off Lieberman in Connecticut. Lieberman went down and the Democratic establishment abandoned him. Yesterday, Lieberman said he does not owe an impending win to the Republicans. I did not see him so I cannot say he said so with a straight face, but whatever gains are made by Lieberman and by the Democrats, it is because Republicans did not govern like Republicans. Bad decisions have consequences. This is what William F. Buckley
has to say:
..."If George Bush ever took to the bottle again, he might confide that he wishes he had never got into war in Iraq. I too wish he hadn't, but that's not because he was wrong in going in. He was moved by a conviction that Saddam Hussein was productively engaged in manufacturing weapons of mass destruction, that he was in league with a terrorist movement that threatened the Middle East, and that America needed to demonstrate its willingness to use its own resources to fight against incipient threats to regional and national security.

Joe Lieberman agreed. He was hardly the only Democrat to back President Bush in 2003, but his special prominence -- he had, after all, been Al Gore's running mate in the campaign of 2000 -- attracted attention to his continued backing of Mr. Bush on foreign policy. The especially sibilant left set out to make the backing of President Bush an excommunicable offense. So that when a pleasant and wealthy young man in Greenwich, Conn., volunteered to head up the posse, he got the backing of the Democratic left. And when the showdown came, the ideological avengers won the day. Senator Lieberman was defeated in the Democratic primary.

This meant to the population at large that hard-bitten Democratic leftists were bidding for control of the party and had scored a huge victory in a critical exchange by defeating a three-term senator who once ran for vice president. The bigger they are ... the harder they fall. So there was much rejoicing in the Jacobin camp when Mr. Lieberman lost.

But of course almost immediately Senator Lieberman announced that he would run as an independent. This gave the dissenters in Connecticut -- Democratic, Republican, and independent -- an opportunity to vote against the execution of the prominent and effective incumbent, who has thought and acted in what he believed the national interest, never mind that the commander in chief was a Republican.

The features of the Democratic leadership are not yet set. The left is eager to assert itself as the true heir of the Democratic tradition, even as in 1948, under the leadership of Henry Wallace, the left attempted to take over the party of FDR and Harry Truman. It failed, and may fail again. But much depends on how much life there is in the opposition, and the first challenge is to vote to retain Joe Lieberman in office."

Join The Contest: Post your final entry here for the outcome of the election. The cut-off is 1300 EST, US. The closest to the outcome will win $100 American Express Certificate. An exact guess will win $250. In the event of a tie, two certificates will be awarded. In the event of more than a two way tie, the posts nearest to 1300 EST will be considered the winners. The winner can make a guest post.

The winning estimate will be the closest to the actual. You will lose one point for each seat that you are off. A perfect score will be "zero". For example if you guess the Democrats pick up 12 in the House and 4 in the Senate, and that happens, you have a perfect score of "zero". If you had guessed a Democratic pick up of 14 and it was actually 12, you have a score of "-2". Change your mind as often as you like till 1300 EST. I will tabulate from your latest. You will not have two guesses. Your latest is your only valid entry. Those of you with multiple personalities can only use one. You know who you are and Whit will confirm, we CAN tell who you are. Have fun.

  2. So what happens if I am spot on, and then Chafee defects to the Dems?
    ---
    (from NRO SIXERS)
I have a friend in Rhode Island—a Democrat torn between his affections for Lincoln Chafee and his desire to make Harry Reid majority leader.

Over the weekend, my friend attended a Chafee event and cornered the senator.
Now, my friend doesn't have a personal relationship with Chafee, but he put the question bluntly to him:
Why should I stick with you in a race with so many national implications?

Chafee pulled my friend aside, lowered his voice, and told him that he might not be a Republican for much longer.

This is just one report. Take it for whatever its worth.

I predict the House will install a Starbucks and a Ben and Jerry's if the Dems take over.
If the Reps hold the majority it will be daily catered fondue by "Fondue Oui" and fountain drinks by Coca Cola, that franchise being given to Zell Miller.
There will be emergency psychiatrists on suicide watch if there's a massive Rep turn out and they retain both Houses.

  8. The other day someone, whit I think, has the solution to the Iraqi Challenge. I compared the situation to St Louis and Detroit.

In that if those cities were full of criminals and out of control, how could we expect to "secure" criminals in Iraq.

I was told, not incorrectly I thought, that the situations were not really comparable. I was making the case that language & cultural skills and such made the police job in Iraq almost impossible for US to accomplish.

There is an Austrailian film maker, a War story documentarian, George Gittoes, that recently visited Miami. His perspective differs, greatly.

MORE fighting goes on in parts of suburban US than Iraq, according to Australian filmmaker George Gittoes who has just finished a documentary set in a Miami "war zone".
    ...
"It is much worse in Miami than it is in Baghdad," Gittoes said in Sydney today.

"There is a sense of people with guns, drug dealers lairing at you ... and being there, I knew I was in a war zone."

Rampage is the second in Gittoes trilogy of documentaries based on the war in Iraq.
    ...
"Even left-wing Americans ... don't want to recognise the mess they've got in their own backyard," he said.

Gittoes has spent much of his career travelling the world, painting, filming and photographing wars in places such as Rwanda, Afghanistan, and East Timor.

"To me, this was just another war zone and it was in America," he said.

Gittoes said there were similar stories to Rampage in Australia's indigenous communities, although he said the task of translating that on the big screen would be difficult.

"The film that I'd like to make in Australia I couldn't make," he said.

"All of our politically correct laws and things wouldn't let someone like me make a film like this in an Aboriginal community in Australia."

Perspective, as allen has come to learn, here at the Bar, is all important. It presents it's own "truths" and can warp reality.

The link is over at drudge.

  9. I predict a surprise outcome caused by Democrats staying home and Republicans holding their noses and voting straight Republican tickets. When I voted at 6 am this morning there were almost 100 in line behind me, usually there's only 20 or so.

  10. So if you're Osama in a cave waiting for the returns what do you do. Here's my guess.

    1. Preparing a letter to go to "Red" Ted Kennedy on how they can undermine the last years of the Bush administration.
    2. Sending John "The Jerk" Murtha, and James Webb autographed pictures.
    3. Sending out the code word for new attacks.
    4. Having dinner with Geo. Soros,Vlad Putain(French spelling)and for desert Cindy Sheehan doing the dance of the Seven Veils.

  11. I do not doubt that the Republicans will turn out in force.

John Shadegg will gain reelection, here in AZ, with an impressive majority.

This situation may well be mirrored across the Red zone. IL is not that Red, Mr Hyde's District for example. Ms Duckworth seems a formidable Dem candidate, even though running is a bit tough for her, since she lost her legs in Iraq.
Remember that though the Dems held the minority of the Seats in the Senate, their combined vote totals were larger then the Republican Majority.

The GOP held the majority with a minority of votes, just as Mr Bush held the White House in his first term. It's more than "turn out" but where the turn out is.

Yes, the followers of Fatah and Hamas daily launch munitions into Israel. They are flaying away like an enraged fighter, for lack of disciplined leadership. Eventually, they will provoke massive Israeli retaliation. That will take the game back to the "start" square. Granted, this will not eradicate the disease; however, it will weaken its effects, at least temporarily.

  41. Half life of plutonium 238 is ONLY
4.5 billion years ..we got no problem.

The half life of uranium is 760 million years. If the age of the earth is 4.2 billion years, then 4.2/.76 = about 6 doublings or about 64 times as much uranium existed on earth at creation as exists now. Uranium is rather heavy. Why doesn't it sink and become more concentrated at the core? Would this high concentration uranium cause early Earth's volcanoes? ANSWER HERE

There are three different isotopes of uranium. They are:
uranium-234: half life = 244 thousand years, 0.0055% of all uranium.
uranium-235: half life = 704 million years, 0.72% of all uranium.
uranium-238: half life = 4.5 billion years, 99.28% of all uranium.

Half-life is the length of time required for half of a given number of initial number of atoms of that isotope to decay.

Elements with short half-lifes, like uranium-235 and potassium-40 (half-life = 1.25 billion years), were important in the early thermal history of the Earth. About 2.5 billion years ago, elements with longer half-lives, like uranium-238, became more important. Heat production was about 4 times greater 4 billion years ago than it is today. Part of that high heat production is from the decay of the elements with short half-lifes. The other part of that heat was from the accretion of the Earth and the formation of the core. Estimates suggests heat production was divided equally between radioactive decay and accretion

    Bob Casey beats Santorum
    1 of the 4

    ReplyDelete
  102. Only 3% of the vote is in. If it's in the East that those votes were counted, it'd make sense for Mr Corker to be up.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Wait till you find out what a shallow twerp Casey is. An empty Robert Hall suit.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Watch Lieberman. He will want to get even. He will run for President as an Independent. Bush burned all his capital and for what? It is all up to Montana for the Senate and The Republicans. The House is gone for sure.

  111. Santorum is a class act. Casey is a real asshole.

  112. Raymond, this is not a cheer, but it could wake the Republicans up and remind all Americans what the Democrats are about. that may not be all bad.

  124. MANCHESTER - Updated, 10:17 p.m. Paul Hodes has beaten U.S. Rep. Charles Bass. The incumbent Republican is ready to concede. As the national Democratic wave swept into New Hampshire, the state's GOP lost most of its Manchester House seats. Democrats have taken Republican state Senate seats in Laconia and Manchester.

  125. Lost Chocola, Hostettler, Northup lost but several

Potential pickups for Republicans look close but good for us right now … GA8 and GA12. With 40% of the precincts reporting in GA8 we are behind by 400 votes and in GA12 we are ahead by 1000 votes.

In FL 16, Mark Foley’s old district, with 49% of precincts reporting GOP is down by 600 votes.

IN9 with 59% of precincts in and the GOP is down by 2000 votes. FBI is involved in an investigation where an election official has been stuffing absentee ballots for the last two weeks … in favor of the Democrat candidate of course.

In VA2 with 67% in GOP is up by 3000 votes.

  133. From a Va. watcher: "Allen is now up by 20k votes and will likely win. He won VA Beach, a large, hotly contested locality, by about 6%. Some NOVA burbs still out, but Allen’s lead should hold."

    ReplyDelete
  134. They are already at 10, doug, give those two Georgia seats to the GOP and it's down to 8. 2 more than 6 already

Still have half the country to go.

    ReplyDelete
  135. No faith Rufus, It'll be close.

It's early but the trend is lopsided. We're only seeing pickups for the Donk side in the House and Senate with no GOP pickups to balance them. You can't win a war by holding. And even if they hang on to the Senate, Bush won't be able to get a Roberts or Alito through anytime over the next two years.

    ReplyDelete
  136. Well we are at three of the four that I predicted for the Senate, doug.

Montana and Missouri, the Dems will pickup one of 'em.

  145. Some of the Democrat winners are more conservative than the so-called Republicans. Ironically, this might move the war in Iraq forward. Of those displeased with the President's handling of Iraq, only about 1/3 are against the war, per se.
