COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

I am stunned, and if you are not... Do me a favor and pass this on! After all, this is the Elephant Bar.

this looks to me like the elephant retreat in Chieng Mai Thailand, I have been there, I have seen the elephants paint, I have seen lots and lots of other elephant art work. This is not a trained act. Elephants are way smarter than people give them credit for.

  3. Deuce, your elephant has control. The pictures in the Gallery don't show that control.

  4. Well, I take that back. Some do show a kind of control, but not to draw a representative figure.

  5. I looked at the video looking for some trick. Sometimes you want to believe something. I looked at it three times. I would like to see it myself. It is amazing if true.

  7. Damn!

I've read they are about the only ones other than us that mourn their dead, and kind of try to bury them too sometimes.

And I read, can't remember whether it was the dolphins, or the whales, they think they have deciphered that they have names for one another, in their communication.

  8. Elephants commonly pass time by doodling on the ground with sticks and pebbles. Sociologists have trained chimps to use sign language and the chimps have taught other chimps to sign.

  9. Russia is adamantly opposed to either Romania or Georgia getting on the NATO track. With nine former Soviet bloc countries already in NATO, Russia fiercely opposes the eastward expansion of an alliance it denounces as a Cold War relic.

Germany and France have spoken out against putting Ukraine on the list just yet, fearing upsetting already strained ties with Russia, a major supplier of energy to Europe.

NATO is expected to formally invite Croatia and Albania to join the alliance. Macedonia also is on the list but could be blocked by Greece.
