COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Police Release Photo of Murder Suspect of Chapel Hill UNC Eve Marie Carson

No surprise here.

CHAPEL HILL - The Chapel Hill Police Department has released a photo from an ATM machine of a man they say is a suspect in the murder of UNC student body president Eve Marie Carson.

The murder of the 22 year old leader on UNC's campus has shocked many across the state and the whole campus community has come together to mourn their loss.

Chapel Hill Police released two photos of the unknown suspect to the media this morning, but according to a report on WRAL-TV yesterday, the police had already circulated the photos to law enforcement officials by the end of the day yesterday to try and identify him.

The Chapel Hill Police did not release where or when the photos were taken.

According to a breaking news report today from WRAL-TV, police investigators did not know whether the sport utility vehicle that the man was driving in the photos belonged to Carson.

Carson owned a blue 2005 Toyota Highlander SUV with a Georgia license plate number of AIV-6690.

However, a comparison of a photo of a 2005 Toyota Highlander with the second image released by police (see photo at end of story) show identical door handles, window pillars, and roof rack details between the two vehicles:

The photos released by the Chapel Hill Police show a man wearing a dark blue baseball cap with a white "H" and an orange star behind the "H". The hat appears to be a vintage Houston Astros baseball team hat similar to the one the team wore from 1980 to 1993. [see photo of a sample antique Houston Astros hat]

Carson's body was found about near campus on Hillcrest Circle on Wednesday morning and she was determined to have been killed by multiple gunshots, including one shot to her head. Her Toyota Highlander was not found by police until Thursday on Hillsborough Street.

  1. Camera, cameras everywhere. With a photo like that, he won't be 'unidentified' for long. It's amazing how many get nailed by the security cameras. I used to not like them much, but now I think they are a good thing. Wonder what the motive was--simple robbery, love gone bad, something else....maybe no motive at all. Senseless in any case. They'll get him. Just a matter of time.
