Iraqi woman 'recruited more than 80 female suicide bombers'

Telegraph

The woman – who was identified as Samira Ahmed Jassim or by her nickname "Umm al-Mumineen", which means the mother of believers – was shown confessing in a video played for reporters at a press conference in Baghdad.

Dressed in an all-encompassing black Islamic robe, she described how she would persuade the women to be bombers, then escort them to an orchard for insurgent training and finally pick them up and lead them to their targets.
She said she was acting on behalf of insurgents based in the volatile Diyala province, north of Baghdad.

Iraqi military spokesman Maj Gen Qassim al-Moussawi said the suspect had recruited more than 80 women willing to carry out attacks and had admitted masterminding 28 bombings in different areas.

The American and Iraqi militaries have made past claims about efforts by insurgents to recruit vulnerable women and children as attackers, but have provided little evidence. Statements that two women who blew themselves up last year in Baghdad had Down's syndrome that later proved to be exaggerated.

Al-Moussawi said Jassim's arrest was the result of tips and produced the video to lend credence to the allegations.

The number of bombings carried out by women has spiked even as overall violence has declined, and US commanders have warned insurgents are actively trying to find more recruits.

At least 36 female suicide bombers attempted or successfully carried out 32 suicide attacks last year, compared with eight in 2007, according to American military figures.
The military said it couldn't provide information on the number of female suicide bombers so far this year, but on Jan 4, a woman who blew herself up in the midst of Iranian pilgrims in Baghdad killed more than three dozen people.

This M80, applied properly, would appropriately send this woman on her journey.

The use of female suicide bombers is part of a shift in insurgent tactics to avoid detection at US-Iraqi military checkpoints that have become ubiquitous in Iraq as part of increased security measures.

Iraqi women often are allowed to pass through male-guarded checkpoints without being searched, and they traditionally wear flowing black robes that make it easier to hide explosives belts.

To counter the threat, the American military has stepped up efforts to recruit women for the Iraqi security forces.

Jassim was arrested by Iraqi security forces acting on tips on Jan 21 and is allegedly linked to the Ansar al-Sunnah insurgent group, al-Moussawi said.

The spokesman would not say where Jassim was arrested because the investigation was ongoing. But he said the recruits had been from Baghdad and Diyala province. He also said she had contact with a pair of recently detained insurgent brothers.
In the video, Jassim said she had to talk to one elderly woman several times before persuading her to blow herself up at a bus station.

It also took Jassim two weeks to recruit another woman who was a teacher and had problems with her husband and his family, according to the confession. That woman eventually attacked members of government-backed Sunni groups in Diyala province, the suspect said.

Very slowly, and with excruciating pain.

I'm thinking, nail her to a wooden post, drill into her teeth and leave the nerves exposed. Stick an intervenous tube in her, and let her rot into the rest of her days. Some third degree burns, say every other day, should also be administered. Same for her immediate family.

  7. Here's where Sacagawea was so critical to Lewis and Clark--

"It must have been hugely disappointing when the fabled Columbia River did not present itself. Instead, the Rocky Mountains spread in all directions: a gorgeous, frightening prospect of high jagged peaks. As Lewis and Clark understood at a glance, a substantial overland journey lay ahead of them, and without horses it would prove impossible. Yet they struggled on, trusting to their luck, until the hoped for miracle occured in the shape of a few Shoshone tribesmen, who appeared on horseback. One of them was obviously a chief, and when Sacagawea saw him, she broke into a dance of joy, then wept profusely. This was, in fact, her brother. The reunion was bittersweet, however, as she learned from him the sad news that most of her family were dead, except for two brothers and on nephew, the son of a deceased sister. The presence of Sacagawea (however coincidental and unlikely) was crucial here, as through her intercession the Indians supplied the necessary horses as well as sound advice on crossing the Rockies."

    "Promised Land" Jay Parini

Sacagawea had aborted herself of a second child by Charbonneu a little earlier. Her first child was still trucking along with the group, newly born.

How likely is it that they would pick up Sacagawea, and then later bump into her brother?

If not for getting those horses then they would have turned back.

Sacagewea had been taken early in her life from the Shoshone after a fight, later was wifed at 16 to this trapper Charbonneu. She was a tough cookie. Clark later paid for her child's education in St Louis.

  9. "On November 7, Clark records a landmark moment for the expedition: 'Great joy in camp we are in view of the Ocian, this great Pacific.' It was the stupendous view they had 'been so long anxious to See'. Clark kept a separate notebook, in which he recorded bearings and courses. Here he allowed himself a little more expressiveness: 'Ocian in view! O! the joy'.

Having arrived on the Pacific Coast at last, the Corps had to make a decision about where to pass the winter. It was a cold and wet autumn, suggesting a fierce season ahead; having lived through the previous winter in the mountains, the group had no interest in trying to rush home over the Rockies in the deep snows. In a generous (and intelligent) move, Lewis put the decision to a vote. Sacagawea and York, a black man, also participated. Here, indeed, was a glimmer of the New World: the democratic impulse given full vent.

The group wisely decided to spend the winter on the south side of the Columbia River near what is now Astoria, Oregon...."

That will only occur if the US now gives the leadership we need. Mr Obama may even find, as many presidents have found before him, that leading the world is easier and more rewarding than cajoling a recalcitrant Congress. This may not be the challenge he expected. But it is the challenge he confronts. History will judge his presidency on whether he dares to succeed.

    THE RUSH REVIVAL

I asked Limbaugh this week why his enemies on the Left repeatedly fall into the trap of distorting his words and overreaching in their anti-talk radio demagoguery. Why, after 20 years, don't they learn?

"On the contrary," he said, "I think they believe all of these campaigns to have been profoundly successful. Their objective is to use their brethren in the drive-by media to echo their charges against me for the purpose of ensuring that I do not become 'mainstream' in the popular and political cultures. They strive to have the general population, particularly those who do not listen to the radio, hate me (and by association, all of conservatism). This happens for one reason: I am effective and thus have to be marginalized as an extremist, fringe figure." Invoking Obama intellectual mentor Saul Alinsky's "Rule for Radicals," Limbaugh has reminded his audience of Rule No. 13 to explain the White House strategy: "Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Indeed, outraged that conservative talk radio has succeeded in the marketplace while liberals have bombed, and unnerved that new media outlets have upended mainstream journalism's monopoly apple cart, liberals have long targeted, personalized, and polarized the medium. Bill Clinton blamed the Oklahoma City bombing on the "many loud and angry voices" in conservative talk radio that "spread hate." Democrats continue to deride "Republican noise machines" and have long worked in Congress to marginalize, regulate and stifle influential talkers - most notably by pressing for the Armed Forces Radio Network to drop Limbaugh (Sen. Tom Harkin's failed hobby horse in 2004) and by threatening to reinstitute the Orwellian Fairness Doctrine (as Sen. Jeff Bingaman did last fall when he hailed a return to the equal-time mandate as a way to force radio to reach its "higher calling.") It's all part of a recurring pattern. Conservative dissent cannot stand. Two years ago, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid picked a fight with Limbaugh over comment he made on his show about soldiers who had falsified their records. Indignant Democrats, looking to bolster damaged credibility over their failure to support the Surge, accused Limbaugh of calling all troops "phony soldiers." Senate Democrats sent a letter of condemnation to Limbaugh. The radio host pulled a jujitsu move, calling out the distortion and auctioning off the letter on eBay for $2.1 million - which he donated to the children of fallen Marines and law enforcement officers. Limbaugh, 1; Reid, 0.

  15. BARACK OBAMA'S HALF-BROTHER ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF MARIJUANA

    The New Tork Post

The half-brother of President Barack Obama was arrested for alleged possession of marijuana on Saturday near his home in a Nairobi shantytown, police said.

George Obama, who is in his 20s and barely knows the president, had one joint of marijuana on him, said Joshua Omokulongolo, the police chief in the area.

"He is not a drug peddler," Omokulongolo told The Associated Press. "But it's illegal, it's a banned substance."

    District of Corruption

    by Norman Ornstein

In over thirty-nine years in Washington, I have seen the city transformed from a sterile national capital akin to Canberra or Brasilia into a social, cultural, culinary and economic metropolis that can (almost) compete with London and Paris. In 1969 when I arrived here, there was limited regional theater, the Smithsonian museums, and a literal handful of "exotic" restaurants (the most exotic of which was a Cuban dive called the Omega.) Fancy clothing was the purview of Raleigh's, where Hickey-Freeman was as hip as it got.

Today, the museums are world-class, as are the restaurants, the art scene, the fashion. But all this pales in comparison to the biggest change: the sheer amount of money sloshing around. In 1970, the federal budget was all of $195 billion. Today, the budget is over $3 trillion.

With so many federal dollars at stake, the capital injected into the system to influence government decisions has exploded. Law firms, lobbying firms, public relations firms-all have mushroomed over the past four decades, creating thousands of high-paying jobs, some going well into the seven figures.

In 1969, member of Congress earned $42,500. Today, the pay is nearly four times that, $169,300. But in 1969 the salary of a first year associate at prime Washington firms was around $10,000-while today, the starting pay for a first year associate is $160,000, not including hefty bonuses for those who have clerked for a federal judge. Back then, a senior partner in a Washington law firm would earn a bit more than a member of Congress; today, that partner might make ten times a congressional salary.

    Joe the Plumber advises GOP-ers

    By ALEX ISENSTADT

Fresh off his stint as a war correspondent in Gaza, Joe the Plumber is now doing political strategy with Republicans.

When GOP congressional aides gather Tuesday morning for a meeting of the Conservative Working Group, Samuel Joseph Wurzelbacher – more commonly known as Joe the Plumber — will be their featured guest. This group is an organization of conservative Capitol Hill staffers who meet regularly to chart GOP strategy for the week.

Wurzelbacher, who became a household name during the presidential election, will be focusing his talk on the proposed stimulus package. He's apparently not a fan of the economic rescue package, according to members of the group.

If nothing else, GOP aides are using the appearance to get staffers to attend the 9 a.m meeting.

“In case you weren’t planning to attend CWG tomorrow morning, you might want to reconsider because Joe the Plumber will be joining us!” Kimberly Wallner, an aide to South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint, wrote in a message to her e-mail list this afternoon.

Last month, Wurzelbacher did a brief stint as a war reporter for the conservative web site pjtv.com.

Our marijuana laws have been ludicrous for as long as we've been alive. Almost half of us (42 percent) have tried marijuana at least once, according to a report published last year in PLoS Medicine, a journal of the Public Library of Science.

The U.S., in fact, boasts the highest percentage of pot smokers among 17 nations surveyed, including The Netherlands, where cannabis clouds waft from coffeehouse windows. Among them are no small number of high-ranking South Carolina leaders (we knew us when), who surely cringe every time a young person gets fingered for a "crime" they themselves have committed.

Other better-known former tokers include our current president and a couple of previous ones, as well as a Supreme Court justice, to name just a few. A complete list would require the slaughter of several mature forests.

This we know: Were Phelps to run for public office someday and admit to having smoked pot in his youth, he would be forgiven. Yet, in the present, we impose monstrous expectations on our heroes. Several hand-wringing commentaries have surfaced the past few days, lamenting the tragic loss for disappointed moms, dads and, yes, The Children.

Understandably, parents worry that their kids will emulate their idol, but the problem isn't Phelps, who is, in fact, an adult. The problem is our laws -- and our lies.

Old Ways Doomed New Job for Daschle

Until this week, Daschle was regarded as a shoo-in for confirmation. His undoing came with the release of his financial disclosure forms last Friday and information that he had paid $146,000 in back taxes and interest to resolve problems flagged by Obama's vetters.

Although Daschle, as a former member of the Senate Finance Committee, helped write tax laws, he explained to the committee on Monday that he did not understand that the around-the-clock car and driver in his new life was subject to taxation and not just a gift from a friend.

It was the relationship with that friend, wealthy media entrepreneur Hindery, that ultimately ended Daschle's return to public life.

Hindery, Daschle said last June in a Las Vegas speech, is "as close to a brother as I'll ever have." Daschle called Hindery someone "I have turned to over and over again for guidance, for direction and inspiration," including on the subject of national health insurance. Daschle even pushed him for a job with the Obama administration, though none was offered.

Has the ring of possible truth, to me.

    What a great culture.

  55. Hey, mat was explicitly calling for a race based expulsion program for Israel.

    Where? Show me.

Israel's national identity is not of Arab identity, it is of Hebrew identity. Arab national identity is antithetical to Israel's Hebrew national identity. Those that call themselves Arabs should not hold Israeli citizenship. That some do, is a grave mistake. It is a grave danger to Israel, and should be addressed immediately.

  56. all your .5% of 649/650th means squat. If you murder just one person, which is, like, 1/6,706,993,152, or in your euphemistic terms "just .000000000014%" of the folk on the planet it is still murder.

Actually, the proposal was that they be taxed the Islamic Jizya tax. And when no longer useful for that purpose, be rid off. :)

  57. This story has been reported strangely. Why has so much of the MSM refused to report her own words, that she sent trolled for likely recruits, sent them to other members of al Sunnah for further "training".

The "training" was repeated rapes. The demoralized, shamed creatures were then returned to "Momma" and she consoled them with stories of being blown to glory in order to get rid of their dishonor.

She is pure evil. 80 women she did this to, and admits sending at least 28 to their deaths -- along with all teh others who were blown up.

I spent some time looking at a # of MSM stories before doing my post:

    The Terrorists’ Mother of Death

Her story is ugly, but some of the lame media are avoiding the ugliest part of it. And these jokers usually like shock stories.

If anyone can tell me what the agenda is re their omission, I'd like to know.
