COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Chirac Apologizes for French Parliament Telling the Truth About Turkey, Working Behind Scenes to Hurt Sarkozy

From France comes this interesting bit of political gossip:
French President Jacques Chirac is carrying out a behind-the-scenes plot to stop his ambitious interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, succeeding him in elections next year.

The plan is to destablise Sarkozy, whom Chirac sees as too arrogant, too pro-American and too insolent, ahead of the polls due to take place in April 2007, newspapers including Le Journal du Dimanche and the newsmagazine Marianne claimed Sunday.

Nicolas Sarkozy , Conservative Party, Minister of the Interior, Born in Budapest. Charismatic politician, law and order advocate. Favored strong crackdown on rioters during recent banlieu uprisings.

Segolene Royale member of French Socialist Party. Current frontrunner to succeed Chirac. Polls show 15 point lead over nearest rival.

  1. I see where Chirac is upset that the French parliament passed legislation making it a criminal offence to deny that the Ottoman Turks committed genocide against the Armenians 80 years ago. Mr Erdogan said the French president phoned him and told him that he understood the Turkish reactions to the legislation.

Mr Chirac also said "he would do what he can in the coming process." The French Senate still has to pass the bill and it cannot become law until it is signed by President Chirac. Turkey is incensed by the French genocide bill. Today there were again several anti-French demonstrations in Istanbul.

Many historians say around one and a half million Armenians died in a series of massacres between 1915 and 1917. The official Turkish version is that a total of 300,000 people were killed on both sides during the war in the former Ottoman Empire.

My goodness imagine telling the truth. that will never do.
