COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Who Is This A-hole?

Francis Anthony Boyle (born 1950) is a professor of international law at the University of Illinois College of Law. He is a graduate of the University of Chicago and Harvard Law School. He also received a Ph. D. in political science from Harvard University.

These guys did not go to Harvard Law or the University of Illinois. They have a somewhat different view of International law and relations. Who would you rather have a beer with?

  2. It's a truly scary thought, thinking what trouble the court in the Hague might try to come up with in the future on global warming, etc. Their grab for power makes Marbury v Madison look pale in comparison.

  7. I see it. Professor So and So can talk the finer points of Sharia Law over with the muzzies.

What responsibilities come with ape rights? If they blow their cool, and tear the head off somebody, can they be charged? What constitutes a jury of their peers?

  15. "Unfortunately, the standard two-hour recording, which works on an endless loop principle, did not contain the de-pressurisation event," senior ATSB investigator Neville Blyth told a media conference in Manila.

"The oldest part of the recording on the cockpit voice recorder commenced after the descent and diversion to Manila, so the event itself appears to have been overwritten."

He said the audio could yet be "very, very useful" - including in relation to examining airflow. "There is a surprisingly large amount of information that can be obtained from acoustic spectrum analysis, if indeed we have a recording of the event," Mr Blyth said.

    In the conduct of the office of President of the United States, George Walker Bush, in violation of his constitutional oath faithfully to execute the office of President of the United States and, to the best of his ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States, and in violation of his constitutional duty to take care that the laws be faithfully executed, has attempted to impose a police state and a military dictatorship upon the people and Republic of the United States of America by means of "a long Train of Abuses and Usurpations" against the Constitution since September 11, 2001. This subversive conduct includes but is not limited to trying to suspend the constitutional Writ of Habeas Corpus;

In all of this George Walker Bush has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States.

Which is why we are having an election.

U.S. soldiers in the Middle East are overwhelmingly poor White, Black, and Latino and their military service is based on the coercion of a system that has denied viable economic opportunities to these classes of citizens.

The last I read, the percent of races in the military was almost exactly that of society as a whole. And, it's a voluntary military, and some of our best are in it.

has violated the U.S. Constitution, federal law, and the United Nations Charter by bribing, intimidating and threatening others, including the members of the United Nations Security Council, to support belligerent acts against Iraq.

  19. It is a great honor and pleasure for me to have been selected to
present the seventh lecture in honor of Doctor Irma Malcolm Parhad. In
reading through her biography, I noticed right away that we are about the
same age and that she had graduated from the Loyola School of Medicine in
Chicago, which has one of the best Medical Schools and Complexes in the
entire Midwestern Region of the United States.

Approximately 1.5 million Iraqi civilians have died, about 500,000
of whom are children. We must use all of our powers as doctors and lawyers
in order to terminate these genocidal economic sanctions.

    ...

    In my latest
book Foundations of World Order: The Legalist Approach to International
Relations (1898-1922) (Duke University Press: 1999), I examined the entire
history of United States military intervention into the Western Hemisphere
and the "Pacific" Basin from the Spanish-American War of 1898 up to the socalled
Good Neighbor Policy of President Franklin Roosevelt. Almost all of
these military interventions were publicly justified on some type of
humanitarian grounds by the United States Government.

  21. The VA estimates that every year 6,500 veterans take their own lives. The mental health director for the VA, Ira Katz, said in an e-mail last December that of the 18 veterans who commit suicide each day, four to five of them are under VA care, and 12,000 veterans under VA care are attempting suicide each year.

This month, the hot line began an advertising campaign in Washington area subway stations and buses featuring the slogan, "It takes the courage and strength of a warrior to ask for help."

The veterans hot line, which is linked to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, received 55,000 callers in its first year, including both veterans and people who are concerned about them, according to figures being released Monday. One-third of the 40 specially trained counselors are veterans themselves.

  23. Speaking during a government meeting in Grozny on July 19, Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov demanded that the heads of power and law-enforcement organs strictly follow the law in using land and installations in Chechnya. “The Chechen Republic is a full-fledged subject of the Russian Federation; the constitution and other laws of Russia and the Chechen Republic function here,” Newsru.com quoted him as saying.

“And I am firmly convinced that not only the civilian authorities, but also the military command of units and sub-units deployed in the republic are also strictly obligated to observe them.”

Kadyrov expressed unhappiness over the fact that representatives of the military command deployed in Chechnya who were invited to attend the meeting did not show up. “Units and sub-units of power structures and law-enforcement organs occupy huge territory and installations,” he said.
