COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

HOROSCOPE – SCORPIO (October 23 – November 22)

Blogger Quirk said...

HOROSCOPE – SCORPIO (October 23 – November 22)

Origin – The Scorpion, is the slayer of Orion, The Hunter. Orion bragged to the gods that he could destroy any creature on earth. To punish his hubris, Artemis summoned Scorpio from the underworld and had him kill Orion.

[Before the 12 month calendar was invented, Virgo, Libra, and Scorpio were all viewed as one sign. Later when they were divided, they came to represent part of the creation myth. Leo was considered Adam, Virgo Eve, and Libra the ‘Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil’. Scorpio was the serpent and represented rebirth, both physical and spiritual. Likewise, in the Tarot, the card representing Scorpio is Death. Again, this card ruled by Pluto represents pending change and regeneration.]

Scorpio (Chantal Duros)

Controlling Body – Pluto (primary)/Mars (secondary – Pluto was discovered in 1930.)

Scorpio Quote (Male) – John Adams: “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”

Scorpio Quote (Male) – Dennis Miller: “What's so touching is the way we fight the war right until the moment our business is taken care of and then we turn on a dime and we immediately start taking care of people. It's like a shock and aw shucks campaign.”

Scorpio Quote (Male) – Erwin Rommel: “Don't fight a battle if you don't gain anything by winning.”

Scorpio Quote (Male) – Charles DeGaulle: “Treaties, you see, are like girls and roses: they last while they last.”

Scorpio Quote (Male) – Rodney Dangerfield: “If it wasn't for pick-pockets I'd have no sex life at all.”

Scorpio Quote (Female) – Indira Gandhi: “My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people: those who do the work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group; there was much less competition.”

Scorpio Quote (Female) – Dana Plato: “Nobody knows what a woman feels or experiences but another woman. We are the nurturers and there are times when we need to be nurtured.”

Scorpio Quote (Female) – Margaret Mitchell: “Until you've lost your reputation, you never realize what a burden it was.”

Many consider Scorpio to be the absolute best sign of the Zodiac. Admittedly, most of those people are Scorpios themselves; however, Scorpio is undoubtedly one of the most popular signs of the Zodiac. Unscientific studies indicate that a full one-twelve of the entire Zodiac consists of Scorpios. The Most Interesting Man in the World is a Scorpio.

When the Scorpio is good he is very, very good; but when he is bad, he is horrid.

Scorpios are typically conservative some would even say old-fashioned in their views. However, they are not middle-of-the-road types and are rarely open to compromise. They usually have strong opinions that are unlikely to change and are often subject to rapid mood swings. This can often get them in trouble. They are curious and anxious to learn everything they can about others. They can be good leaders but prefer to quietly manipulate events from in the background. They are highly intuitive and are drawn to the arcane and psychic. They are intense. They are hard-workers and rarely give up once they have set themselves a task. They are intelligent. They can use the word ‘want’ as both a noun and a verb in the same sentence. They know how to divide by zero and most understand the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

On the other hand, they worry about being humiliated or being made to look foolish so they limit themselves to those tasks they know they can accomplish and excel at. They are suspicious and are constantly looking for hidden motives, flaws, and vulnerabilities in others. They are suspicious of flattery. They refuse to accept superficial arguments and are constantly pressuring to get the full story.

Scorpios are obstinate and stubborn. They are rarely willing to compromise. It is usually their way or the highway. They tend towards jealousy and can be manipulative and vindictive when they feel they have been wronged. They are not prone to forgiving and forgetting and are patient enough to wait to exact revenge. They have to struggle to control their emotions and their tempers.

It is in personal relations where the dual nature of the Scorpio is evident. Scorpios are normally highly committed to their long-term relationships. They are loyal and devoted mates. On the other hand, they can be flirtatious. This tendency is driven by ego, the desire to manipulate situations, a genuine curiosity about others, and an effort to explore motivations. It is another instance of the Scorpio trying to shake things up. When push comes to shove; however, they are typically committed and loyal to their partners.

Scorpios have strong sex drives. They are intense and uninhibited. They are also enthusiastic and inventive. The Kama Sutra was ghost-written by a Scorpio. It was also a Scorpio who first introduced the radical concept that sordid, distasteful, and abusive sexual relations did not necessarily have to involve other people. They are patient lovers. They don’t mind letting their lovers continue to talk after sex even when the toll charges really start adding up. Scorpios are disgusted by the shallowness and lies that surround them; however, their manipulative nature also recognizes that this actually helps them in getting a little now and then.

Scorpios tend to use sex as an excuse to grab an extra smoke.

Physically, Scorpios are typically average in height and built, wiry when young but stockier as they grow older. Some retain their wiry physiques but most have to work to keep the weight off. Scorpios are physical but not necessarily athletic. They tend to be lovers rather than fighters. Scorpios are often hairy, and while some Scorpios are into metrosexual grooming most consider their hair a sign of their virility. This is especially true of female Scorpios. Scorpios also tend to be prone to extremes. They need to try to avoid potential excesses in the areas of food, drugs, alcohol, and sex. Scorpios tend to use sex as an excuse to grab an extra smoke.

Your 2010-2011 Horoscope (Scorpio)

This year is expected to offer a mixed bag for the typical Scorpio.

• You will continue to receive those midnight phone calls from that ranch-hand up around Coeur d’Alene warning you to quit coming around sniffing after his woman.

• Your addiction to Mezcal grubs will result in a near-death experience that will completely change your outlook on life. You will immediately become heavily involved with sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll as well as the occasional round of autoerotic asphyxiation.

• Within a few months, the attorney for the City of Moscow will be bringing a lawsuit against you for felony misnaming of side streets in a proposed development. Various Indian tribes will join the lawsuit alleging discrimination in that the spelling of the names requires a Japanese dialect in order to pronounce them. The city attorney will be relentless and convincing in exposing your crimes; however, you will take a certain wry satisfaction in the fact that at certain times during the trial you are able to see right down her blouse.

• Most economist and pundits know that the recent economic downturn was caused by a low savings rate, a housing bubble, overextended credit, excess risk taken by the banks, poor government oversight, and obscure and opaque derivatives packages; however, in spite of that, they still can’t shake the gut feeling that you are somehow to blame for the whole damn mess even though you are now living in Australia.

• Later this year, you will laugh at the lachrymation of the Moscow city lawyer as she laments the loss of her lousy and libelous lawsuit. But don’t lambaste or lampoon her as that would be a little too much alliteration.

Appropriate Scorpio Pets – Appropriate pets for Scorpios would include wolves, spiders, moray eels, and owls. Bats and badgers would also be acceptable.

  1. My daughter--god how she has loved Dali--myself, I like John Deere---we have one original Dali--and a brunch of prints--but I would sell for a Deere.

    Kinda guy I am.

The only Dali that impressed me was of some grass--that was TRULY beautiful, and resonated.

Other than that, I'd take my Royal Coachman.

    Let him paint that.

    Which has some worldly meaning.

    Let's stick with that.

    The formula mystic is--

Birth is a sleep and forgetting. Death, the antidote, is an awaking and remembering.

    I don't like Dali.

  4. Out of many, one. That could well be the motto of this ambitious exhibition. It focuses on “the three Abrahamic religions” — Judaism, Christianity and Islam — each of which takes as a forebear an “itinerant herdsman” of the Middle East, Abraham, who affirmed belief in a single God. As the show puts it, Abraham rejected “the religions of antiquity with their plethora of gods, each imbued with a particular attribute, purpose and power,” replacing the many with the one.

The Abrahamic religions share other characteristics as well. Each believes that God has made himself known to his prophets through acts of revelation. And such revelations shape groups of believers by being incorporated in canonical written texts: the Hebrew Bible, the Christian Gospels, the Islamic Koran.

Though the exhibition does not point this out, the connection between monotheism and such texts is no accident. Once multiple divinities are discarded, along with their rivalries and conflicting powers, religion is concerned with just two poles: the human and the divine. Religious events take place not on Mount Olympus or in some imagined godly castle, but in the earthly realm. Religious history becomes fully part of human history. And the telling of that history, along with commentary and reinterpretation, becomes an aspect of the religion itself. These faiths are historical faiths.

  5. While the French President is less popular there, than President Obama is, here.

PARIS (AP) — A new poll suggests French President Nicolas Sarkozy's approval rating has dropped to its lowest level yet amid pension protests that have sparked gas shortages, travel chaos and school closures.

The poll, published Sunday in the Journal du Dimanche newspaper, showed that only 29 percent of those surveyed were satisfied with Sarkozy's performance.

Sarkozy trying to emulate Mr Christie in NJ and the British Government, by cutting government spending. Not gaining popularity from the pursuit of those policy measures.

  6. The Way We Treat Our Troops

I would bring back the draft in a heartbeat. Then you wouldn’t have these wars that last a lifetime.

And you wouldn’t get mind-bending tragedies like the death of Sgt. First Class Lance Vogeler, a 29-year-old who was killed a few weeks ago while serving in the Army in his 12th combat tour.

That’s right, his 12th — four in Iraq and eight in Afghanistan.

Twelve tours may be unusual, but multiple tours — three, four, five — are absolutely normal. We don’t have enough volunteers to fight these endless wars. Americans are big on bumper stickers, and they like to go to sports events and demonstrate their patriotism by chanting, “U-S-A! U-S-A!” But actually putting on a uniform and going into harm’s way? No thanks.

Sergeant Vogeler was married and the father of two children, and his wife was expecting their third.

  7. The Spendthrift:

To ensure fool-proof security, the President’s team has booked the entire the Taj Mahal Hotel, including 570 rooms, all banquets and restaurants.

Since his security contingent and staff will comprise a huge number, 125 rooms at Taj President have also been booked, apart from 80 to 90 rooms each in Grand Hyatt and The Oberoi hotels. The NCPA, where the President is expected to meet representatives from the business community, has also been entirely booked.

The officer said, “Obama’s contingent is huge. There are two jumbo jets coming along with Air Force One, which will be flanked by security jets. There will be 30 to 40 secret service agents, who will arrive before him. The President’s convoy has 45 cars, including the Lincoln Continental in which the President travels.”

Since Obama will stay in a hotel that is on sea front, elaborate coastal security arrangements have been made by the US Navy in consonance with the Indian Navy and the Coast Guard. “There will be US naval ships, along with Indian vessels , patrolling the sea till about 330-km from the shore. This is to negate the possibility of a missile being fired from a distance,” the officer said.

  13. Okay, so maybe 'ignoring' was a bad choice words but,

    Analysis
Walker's World: Obama is losing India

WASHINGTON, March 15 (UPI) -- The Obama administration is trying to play catch-up in its relations with the country that could become its most important long-term ally. But it may be leaving it too late, after India last week agreed a $7 billion deal in arms, nuclear reactors and space technology with Russia.

India's strategic importance can hardly be exaggerated. More than just the other Asian economic giant after China, India is a democracy where English is an official language. It shares with Washington the same love-hate attitude toward China, hopeful but deeply suspicious at the same time. And with a much healthier demographic profile than China, most extrapolations of long-term trend suggest that India's economy will outgrow China's by the second half of this century.

U.S. President Barack Obama himself seems to have understood this. The first state dinner he hosted was for India's Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. And then were strong foundations on which to build. His Democratic predecessor Bill Clinton had started the courtship of India in the 1990s and President George W. Bush's commitment to India was one of the few successes of his troubled foreign policy.

Bush's legacy was a nuclear cooperation agreement, which allowed India to escape the nuclear isolation into which it was plunged after testing a nuclear weapon outside the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Bush's deal also opened the way for the United States to sell nuclear power stations, fuel and other technology to India and to forge a lasting strategic partnership.

But for a host of reasons the Obama administration has let India slip down the list of its priorities. Not all of these reasons relate to Islamic terrorism, the war in Afghanistan and consequent urge to focus on Pakistan.

I heard it said that compared to the Bush Administration, the Indians feel ignored by Obama.

  17. When we had the draft, every family had a realistic view about what the military was and the military had a more realistic view of what they were about.

Military service is a necessary evil. It is also a duty to one's country.

Military service is not heroic. Very, very few achieve hero status and when it comes, it is with a fearful cost.

If a recruit completes his obligation without being killed or maimed, it is a great experience.

The basic need for a military is a permanently imperfect world, a dangerous world with permanent adversaries, because human being are adversarial.

The impetus to perfect the world must come from below. It will never come from the elites that rule.

Military service should not be based on careers. It should be a temporary duty with a small cadre of career officers and NCO's.

The enlisted corps should be universally composed of draftees, male, unmarried and with a minimal amount of dependents. They should be well trained, underpaid and the majority encouraged to leave after four years of service.

No family benefits should be made available to anyone under an E-5. And anyone not recommended to being promoted to an E-5 should be made to leave after four years.

The amazing thing that I think perplexes the Chinese and Russians, and just about everybody else, about the current world hegemony, if you can call it that, has been the relatively lack of will of the US government to use its immense power to gain deals favorable to itself. It's thinking like this - and I lean in this direction - that opens the door wide to the conspiracy context articulated most noticeably within the smaller confines of the political blog space by buddy larsen.

I am not learned enough to compare historical imperative with post modern mistakes, let alone isolate the globalist dreams of one-world dominion, but I can observe intellectual dust on the policy imperatives that inform the current crop of Washington elites. Modernity needs an upgrade.

I can tell you this---it was when people, now named farmers----that's ME---learned how to get a grip that the first cities bloomed.

With the cities came specialization, the first cubism---am I right Quirk--a complex situation---and then---the rock art vanished---we have that out here, you wouldn't believe how much all up and down the rivers---but then all this meaningful scribbling was replaced by --- the bounded form--which is what we now think of as art--a representation of an individual--or a situation--that was never really thought of before--or if not, the means of the idea were lacking before.

If you like art, thank bob, who doesn't know art in the visual form from his ass.

  88. Do Women Sweat Differently Than Men?

Does a hard-working woman sweat like a man? That question, which has figured in many an antiperspirant commercial, has received surprisingly little scientific scrutiny. But a new study published this month in the journal Experimental Physiology provides persuasive evidence that women do sweat copiously during exercise. (Did anyone really believe they misted?) But fit women seem to sweat differently than unfit people of either sex, and quite differently than fit men, a fact that has implications for sports performance. It also may have some bearing on what it has meant, since prehistory, to be female.

For the study, researchers at Osaka International University and Kobe University in Japan recruited a pool of trained athletes, male and female, as well as an age- and gender-matched group of untrained volunteers. The men and women in the two groups were similar in terms of weight. All of the volunteers rode stationary bikes in a physiology lab heated to a balmy 86 degrees...

A bit off topic, but $440,000 for a Medical License (the education to earn one) does not sound like a crazy expense. It’s about the cost of a midrange grain harvester, or a bull dozer and dump truck. The key difference is the Lic. is not a transferable asset. On the plus side it (the knowledge) can’t be stolen.

A medical education of that scope is functionally provided and financed by the government:

Student loans are Federalized — rather completely, by now.

Obama has us going to single payor — government — which will kick in enough $$$ to permit the loans to be paid back to itself.

Obamacare thus is more towards communism than socialism: the regs are professionally totalitarian.

Hence, the scope of work and payment thereon is going to be by dictat.

This template is sure to be re-employed for other politicized professions: nurses, dentists, etc.

I view the current 'student loan' imbroglio as a mixed bag. First, from what I know of the situation, I'm glad to see the government pulled the administration of student loans in-house.

First, they had some government agencies doing the same work already. From what I read it seemed like the additional workload would be absorbed without hiring additional people.

Second why pay the banks for pushing paper? That's all they were doing. A payoff from the GOP. Allowing them to dip their beaks. Maybe it's my contempt for everything associated with bankers and banking right now but I'm inordinately happy to see them lose at least one small leg of the free ride.

However, that's where my support for the program ends. Doctors? Hell, the administration was pushing to allow for the cancellation of the loans to those who went into service (cops, firemen, etc.) and government jobs. I assume the provisions passed.

These sweet heart deals to the unions must be (at a minimum, should be) illegal. This is were there should be some lawsuits started.

You can't call this anything else but what it is, an 'industial policy'. The problem is that it is misguided. Any advantage you might possibly gain in aditional doctors is more than offset by the additional government workers.

Felix Frankfurter wrote, "It was a wise man who said that there is no greater inequality than the equal treatment of unequals."

A great point. But an equally pertinant one is that there is no greater evil than to provide unequal benefits to equals to gain political advantage.

This is all of a piece with the demented reaction of NPR to Juan Williams, the LWV ex-ACORNite and ***teh Pledge of Allegians at teh*** IL-8 forum, and a zillion other things.

The common thread is that reality is finally and belatedly starting to assert itself, and we have produced and empowered a generation of political and cultural leaders who simply have never dealt with reality and cannot do so, now.

In their world, to state something, as long as it is approved by ***teh right people, is to make it so. They said, “Pass the health care bill and everyone will love it before the election,” for which there was zero evidence and plenty of evidence to teh contrary, buyt the votes fell in line.

“Pass the stimulus bill and unemployment won’t exceed 8%,” even tho it was obvious to anyone with eyes that (a) unemployment was going to get really bad, and (b) teh ARRA was a joke even if you accept Keynes.

Now, Geithner goes to the G-20 and tells everyone thay have to control their trade balances, as if (a) the US isn’t the main culprit because of our own policies, and (b) a country can do that on its own without setting hard quotas that would violate the WTO treaty. And, everyone snickered at him, as he deserved.

On and on… a bunch of isiot 3-year olds who think tehy can have whatever they want by wishing for it, and maybe throwing a tantrum.

The toughest thig is that at least as regards domestic economics, the solutions are simple and blindingly obvious, with a relatively narrow range of uncertainty where political give and take should occur. Stop spending monney on things that cannot be proven to work, esp those that after years of increased effort are manifest failures (e.g., most urban school districts; Head Start; the current structure of ag subsidies; NPR, NEH, NEA, CPB, and so on). Reform entitlements (Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, TANF) to make them affordable, long-term, by a combination of means testing, strong incentives for the beneficiaries to act responsibly, and benefit reductions (in that order). Tax reform to make US corporations competitive and provide incentives for the most economically productive people to work more and to stop discouraging the hiring of people near the bottom who need a leg up. Plenty of details and there will be some pain, but
    ***this isn’t rocket surgery.***

It is so far beyond disgusting, but “we the people” kept electing these clowns, year after year, decade after decade.

Calls for defunding the networks began after Williams, who also serves as a Fox News contributor, said that he sometimes gets “worried” in airports when he sees people who “first and foremost identify as Muslims.” Although he was making a larger point about how he wants Americans to move beyond prejudices against Muslims, NPR ended his contract two days later.

South Carolina Republican Sen. Jim DeMint announced Friday he would introduce a bill to gut public funding of news media outlets like NPR. In the House, Colorado Republican
Rep. Doug Lamborn put forth a similar bill in June that stalled in committee under Democratic leadership.

With the midterm elections just days away, Republicans are looking to make major gains in both chambers, which could turn the rhetoric over defunding such a longstanding institution a possible reality in 2011.
