In the showdown over the shutdown of the U.S. government, the Obamaites tipped their hand yesterday as what their strategy is.
Taking a page out of Saul Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals,” the plan is to maximize the people’s pain — to maximize the political damage to the enemy, the Republican Party.
What else explains it?
Consider this: Asked Wednesday if there were any danger of America defaulting on her debt, President Obama rushed to assure a reporter that, yes, indeed, there certainly is such a peril.
Why would a president act in so perverse a manner, were he not trying deliberately to rattle or panic the markets?
Obama’s tactic worked. Thursday, the Dow plunged below 15,000.
Equally telling is what happened at the World War II Memorial.
This is an open memorial on the mall, to which the old soldiers of the Greatest Generation, flown here on honor flights, come to a last roll call with their comrades. The memorial is dedicated to them, to what they and their buddies did, and to those who never came home.
But when the old soldiers got here, the Park Service, apparently acting on orders from the White House complex, had thrown up steel barriers and crime-scene tape to keep them from visiting the site on what is surely the last trip many will ever make to see their memorial.
What kind of sick mind does something like that?
To their credit, the vets and their families pulled aside the barriers to walk through their monument, singing songs in memory of the heroes who had gone before.
Now one reads that Obama has ordered the cemetery and beaches at Normandy closed. Again, what kind of mindset produces this?
Undeniably, Republicans have voted to defund Obamacare, to suspend it for one year, and to reform it. But in each of these three votes, the House also voted to fund the entire government.
Why, then, is the government shut down? Because Harry Reid and Barack Obama have issued an edict: Either Obamacare is fully funded and untouched in the continuing resolution, or we kill the CR, shut down the government, and blame you.
And this is exactly what is going on.
This is all about a petulant president whose prize program the people do not want, but who insists it be imposed upon them, to assure himself a paragraph in the history books.
This week, Republicans tried to pass legislation that would keep open all memorials and monuments, all tourist sites in Washington, D.C., and all programs for America’s veterans.
Who stonewalled that? Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barack Obama.
Why would Reid sabotage the funding the National Institute of Health.
Why would Reid sabotage what is transparently a humanitarian act?
Again, Reid and Obama do not want to ease the pain of the people. They want to intensify that pain, ratchet it up, maximize it, to put maximum pressure on and do maximum damage to the GOP.
The Obama-Reid strategy is, in a word, sadistic.
They are inflicting pain on fellow Americans — to break their political enemies. And they can only succeed in sustaining their Big Lie — that it is Republicans who want to keep the government shut down — because of a collaborationist press.
Case in point: The Washington Post.
Several days ago, the Post wailed that Republicans were endangering the nation’s health by failing to fund NIH. But now that the Republican House has tried to fund NIH in full, where is the editorial denouncing Pelosi or Reid for blocking funding for NIH? Nowhere. Which suggests the Post’s real concern was never about funding NIH but about bashing the GOP.
In Thursday’s lead editorial: “National Security at Risk,” the Washington Post asks, “At a time of war, how can Republicans justify furloughing much of the intelligence workforce?”
Excellent question.
Yet, not a word in the editorial about the indispensable role of Reid and our commander-in-chief in preventing America’s security agencies from being funded.
What should the House Republican do before week’s end? Pass bills funding the Pentagon, State, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security and any other agency having to do with the national security. But when Harry Reid again balks that he is not going to “play this little game,” anyone think the Post will hold him accountable?
The Obama-Reid strategy — inflict maximum pain on the country for maximum gain for themselves — coupled with a refusal to talk with the GOP — reflects this city’s contempt for conservative Republicans.
Yet, the sadistic strategy of Obama and Reid, and the poisonous atmosphere it has created, is telling America that: In its assessment of this city’s ruling establishment, the Tea Party has more than a small point.
Yet, with Reid now on the defensive, trying to justify his refusal to cooperate in funding any agency, the truth may be gaining on the Big Lie.

    I disagree. The only thing Buchanan has right is blaming Obama and Reid for the mess we are in. What he fails to do is to also blame Boehner and the dicks in his caucus for their part in the current fiasco.

    Anyone who is aware of the budget discussions since March knows this is just a case of political gamesmanship being played by both sides. If I were to blame one side more than the other it would have to be the GOP.

    I can't understand those who hold Boehner faultless in this fiasco.

    2014 Senate and House budget resolutions have been waiting for reconciliation for six months and Boehner has refused to even appoint members to the reconciliation committee until pressured to do so within the last few days. Basically, he has refused to do his job.

    There being no budget, Bo passes a partisan continuing resolution which calls for the defunding of Obamacare. The Senate rejects it and sends a clean bill back to the House. Bo refuses to even allow a House vote on it, a vote he knows he will lose.

    When the government shuts down due to this intransigence, Bo tries a policy of 'death by a 1,000 cuts' tactic and the shutdown continues.

What kind of support would an American politician have in dealing with a superior power (if it existed) that was trying to destroy the American banking system, was wrecking the economic life of our country, was surrounding us with military bases, ships and plains and routinely talked about warring against us?

    That would not make for a successful politician. Obama understands that and so does Kerry. The US people and the Iranian people must get used to the idea that a political reconciliation is in their interest and possible. Political opportunists in the US and Iran are lined up to destroy those politicians that try to mend normal relationships. That is the nature of politics.

    There is no benefit to either Iran or the US not having normal relationships. It is in Israel’s real interests to have the US and Iran have normal relationships. Most intelligent Israelis, other than right wing zionists and religious fanatics know it. There is a significant Israeli population that objects to how the religious right in Israel has maneuvered the Israel into the position of lesser standing that it has in the World.

      Washington - On Saturday (Sept. 22) the U.S. Senate voted 90 to 1 to pass a non-binding resolution that would prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The lone senator voting against the resolution was Rand Paul, son of Ron Paul the well-known libertarian.

      Rand Paul argued that the resolution was de-facto a declaration that the U.S. would wage a pre-emptive war. The resolution was introduced months ago by three senators: Lindsey Graham, Bob Casey and Joe Lieberman.

      The Joint Resolution 41 rejects any U.S. policy "that would rely on efforts to contain a nuclear-weapons-capable Iran". Senator Richard Blumenthal said in Senate::
      “We know that Iran would create access for terrorists – access for them – to these nuclear weapons, making the Middle East a nuclear tinbox. We cannot trust this regime. We know that fact beyond any potential doubt.”

      The bill itself claims that it should not be misinterpreted as endorsing military force. However, Paul argues that the resolution would lead to war eventually and in effect endorses a pre-emptive war against Iran. No doubt defenders of the bill will say that the resolution simply states that an offensive pre-emptive attack against Iran is a viable option. However it goes further than that. The resolution implies that if other methods do not prevent Iran from being nuclear capable then there will be a pre-emptive war because the U.S. will not follow a policy of containment.

      Paul said in Senate:
      “A vote for this resolution is a vote for the concept of pre-emptive war.”
      While the resolution does not directly call for military intervention it does imply that if other methods do not work that the U.S. would intervene militarily since it would refuse to adopt a policy of trying to contain a nuclear capable Iran. The resolution does not even speak of rejecting a policy of containing Iran if it had nuclear weapons but of rejecting such a policy even if Iran only had a nuclear weapons capability.
      Since Iran is not attacking the U.S. or even threatening a first strike, Paul seems correct that the resolution puts Iran on notice that the U.S is willing to engage in a pre-emptive war against it. This is a direct threat to Iran and, to follow U.S. logic, Iran would be quite justified in attacking first! This would be a pre-emptive war in self defense.
      This resolution comes just as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been pressing the U.S. to draw a red line which, if crossed, would lead the U.S. to military action against Iran. This resolution perhaps is not immediate enough to suit Netanyahu but it does imply that if other tactics do not work the U.S. would wage a pre-emptive attack even if Iran were just capable of making nuclear weapons.

    You won't read too much about it in the mainstream Western media, but the truth is that in a battle which the US President and British Prime Minister repeatedly tell us is fundamental to our own security - Iran is on 'our' side.

Only last October, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki warned the West not to hold talks with the Taliban: "We advise them to think about the consequences of the talks... which are taking place in the region and in Europe and avoid being bitten in the same spot twice."

    Neocons have managed to conflate Israel’s enemies with those of the West

    So why if Iran is on 'our side' in the war against the Islamic fundamentalists in Afghanistan, does the West remain so hostile to Tehran? The answer, of course, is the enduring influence of the neocons, who see the world through a pro-Israeli prism.

    Iran is opposed to the Taliban and it is certainly no friend of al-Qaeda. But because of its sponsorship of Hamas and Hezbollah, it is deemed by the 'Israel-firstists' to be public enemy number one. The neocons have successfully managed to conflate Israel's perceived enemies with those of the West: Iran is seen as a threat to Israeli hegemony in the Middle East, therefore it's a threat to the US and Britain.

    They've also managed to spin the myth of a coherent and unified Islamic network of terror, which includes Iran, Hezbollah, Hamas, Syria, the Taliban and al-Qaeda - and before 2003, Saddam Hussein's Iraq, too. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu claims: "These terrorist states and terror organisations together form a terror network, whose constituent parts support each other operationally as well as politically."

    Bowing to neocon and Zionist pressure to isolate Iran is undoubtedly hampering Western efforts in Afghanistan. Enlisting the Islamic Republic's support in the battle against the Taliban is no guarantee of success - but it would certainly increase the chances.

    Last weekend, we heard that Iran was preparing a new package of "political, security and international" issues to put to the West. It's highly likely that Afghanistan will be among the issues covered in that package and that there will an offer of Iranian co-operation in return for concessions on the country's nuclear energy programme.

    The pro-Israeli lobby will do all it can to get the proposals rejected; but if, as Obama, Brown et al state, it is really true that the war against the Taliban is fundamental to our national security, and that it is a conflict that must be won, then Western leaders would be wise to give them the most serious consideration. ·

  44. On its 60th anniversary, Israel is still concerned about survival. Even with nuclear weapons and the strongest military in the Middle East, the Jewish state remains anxious. Iranian leaders are similarly concerned about the future of their administration, even as the country approaches the 30th anniversary of its Islamic Revolution.

    Israel fears any potential threat, whether it comes from Hamas, Hezbollah, or political Islamic groups. Israel also has begun to fear its shifting demographics, where birth rates are significantly higher among Palestinians than Jews. But above all, Israel perceives a threat from Iran.

    In a similar vein, Iran is threatened by an outside force that would roll back its revolution. The religious conservatives in Iran are resistant to perceived reformists, which at various times have been supported by the United States, and stands alone as one of the only Shia majority countries in the region.

    Yet the conservatives of Iran, heirs to Ayatollah Khomeini's Islamic Revolution, also face the possibility of seeing their regime replaced by the followers of former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami.

    Iran and Israel share a sense of isolation: Israel is comprised of an ethnic and religious minority (Jewish) in a largely Arab and Muslim Middle East. Likewise, Iran's government is an ethno-religious minority (Shi'a Persians) surrounded by Sunni countries.

    Few know that Iran is home to the largest number of Jews in the Middle East outside of Israel. There are 80 synagogues (11 of them in Tehran), many with Hebrew schools. And over 25,000 Jews, most of whom are determined to remain, because they are as proud of their Iranian culture as they are of their Jewish roots.

    Iran and Israel should stop writing the narrative of the other as "enemy". Ahmadinejad is perceived by Israel as a threat, while Israel's extremists believe that the world's evil emanates from Iran.

    These views are too black and white, and too polarising.

      A 60-year-old Jewish man was hanged in Iran last week, presumably for his assistance to Jews fleeing Iran, Yediot Aharonot reported on June 8, 1998. The man, from the Kathodzada family, was a member of Teheran's Jewish community and was known for assisting Jews in distress.

      The man disappeared last month, and his family was notified of his execution by Iranian government officials last week. The authorities failed to give any explanation for the execution.

      At least 13 Jews have been executed in Iran since the Islamic revolution 19 years ago, most of them for either religious reasons or their connection to Israel.

This behavior does not connote xenophobia or bigotry. As to non-Jews, the Druze and Bedouins are living quite comfortably in Israel. They even serve in the IDF.

  50. Reparations were the payments required by the Treaty of Versailles, by which Germany had to pay to repair all the damage of the war.

    To the victors, it seemed fair.
    Germany had caused – and in Clause 231 had accepted the blame for – the war. So German should pay for the damage. In addition, to fighting the war, the French and British had borrowed money which they would be repaying for a long time.
    Why shouldn’t Germany pay out too?

    The first problem, however, was that it was very difficult to work out the cost of the damage the war had done.
    France wanted a very high figure. Wilson and Lloyd George wanted less.
    In 1919, reparations of £1 billion were suggested.
    During 1920, the figure was raised to £4½ billion, and then to £12½ billion!
    Eventually, in April 1921, the League of Nations agreed a sum of £6.6 billion – in installments, until 1984 – and defeated Germany had to agree to pay.

    Even at the time, economists like JM Keynes said that reparations would ruin, not only Germany, but the world economy.

    Germany had lost her richest farmland (West Prussia) and the Saar coalfields.
    Its economy had been damaged by the war.
    It couldn’t stand large payments of gold leaving Germany every six months.
    In July 1922, there was an economic crisis, and Germany was granted a six-month delay in payments.
    But when the German government failed to make its January 1923 payment...

    French and Belgian troops invaded the Ruhr, and began to take in kind what they were owed.
    German miners in the Ruhr refused to work for the French and went on strike, which created hyperinflation.
    Germany began to fall apart, and there were revolutions in the Rhineland and (led by Adolf Hitler) in Bavaria.

    In the meantime, because they weren’t getting German reparation payments, Britain and France defaulted on their loans to the United States.

    The NAZI and Soviet formed a non-aggression treaty, which perplexed many Germans given Hitler's volcanic rhetoric condemning "Jew-Bolsheviks". Among other things, the treaty had the objective of partitioning Poland, Hitler would get half and Stalin would get half. On 1 Sep 1939, Germany invaded Poland. The Soviet was not far behind.

    For Germany's aggression, the UK and France declared war on Germany. They did not declare war on Germany's ally the CCCP.

    In 1941, Germany broke its treaty with the Soviet and attacked. Almost immediately, Stalin was accepted by the UK and Free French as an ally. With Germany's declaration of war against the US in Dec 1941, the US also accepted the Soviet as an ally.

    Saudi Arabia has a sizable Shia population that just happens to live in areas containing Saudi Arabia's most productive petroleum plants. Since Iran has been vocal in its desire to see the Kingdom fall, the Saudis are, naturally, apprehensive. Since Iran has been even more vituperous in its rhetoric toward Israel, the Israelis are, naturally, apprehensive. The mutual apprehension of both countries makes them unwilling, but nonetheless, de facto allies.
