COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Putin has the nerve to show up in Poland for 70th Anniversary of WWII catastrophe

There are few nations that deserve more contempt than Germany or Russia for their joint responsibility for World War II. German and Soviet crimes resulted in 70 million dead. Japan would never have attempted to unilaterally take on the United States without the backdrop of the European disaster caused by the killers Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin. That is the truth the World should never forget.

Germany was encouraged and abetted by Stalin and the Soviets. Any attempt by Russia and Putin to explain away their responsibility is a hideous travesty. The Katyn forest massacre demonstrates the big Soviet lie and exposes those that chose not to see the truth.

Poland remembers its catastrophe

By Jonny Dymond
BBC News, Gdansk

Searchlights lit up the sky as the hour of the anniversary approached - three streams of light pricking the early morning darkness.

Around the monument to the heroes of the Battle of Westerplatte, military units shuffled into formation.
A long line of dignitaries - military, governmental and religious - faced the obelisk, itself a throwback to Soviet-era sculpture.

Westerplatte is one of Poland's great moments of resistance: bombarded by the German warship Schleswig-Holstein, vastly outnumbered by German troops, and dive-bombed by Stuka planes, 180 lightly armed Polish troops guarding a military depot held out for seven days before surrendering.

At the appointed hour - 0445 (0245 GMT), marking the passage of 70 years to the minute - trumpets rang out across the Westerplatte.

Catastrophe

There was, of course, talk of heroism in the speeches of the mayor of Gdansk, the President Lech Kaczynski and the Prime Minister Donald Tusk.

But for Poland, perhaps more than any other nation on earth, World War II was nothing but a catastrophe. By the war's end, five to six million Poles had been killed, many of them Jews - a greater proportion of Poland's population than that of any other country.

Both Nazi and Soviet occupiers sought to wipe Poland and its civilisation from the map.

The country's intellectual, religious, commercial and military elite were slaughtered. Properties were confiscated, museums looted, universities and schools closed. The capital Warsaw was destroyed on the orders of Hitler.

And the country became a base for the mechanised slaughter of the Holocaust. Auschwitz, Sobibor and Majdanek were some of the camps placed here by the Nazi occupiers.

"We remember," said Mr Tusk, "because we know well that he who forgets or he who falsifies history, and has power, or will assume power, will bring unhappiness again, like 70 years ago."

'Knife in the back'

Mr Kaczynski, the country's more nationalist president, threw a little more fat on the fire of an argument raging between Poland and Russia over responsibility for the war.

Poles have long seen the Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Treaty, signed a week before war started, as the starting gun for the German invasion.

Just two weeks later, in mid September 1939, the Soviet armies occupied eastern Poland, and the country was effectively no more.

"On 17 September," said President Kaczynski, "when we were we still defending Warsaw… that day Poland received a knife in the back."

The Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will speak later in the day.

But as the dawn broke over the Westerplatte, and the trumpets sounded again to mark the end of the ceremony, it was the soldiers of Poland - who fought and fell for their country - who were, once more, remembered.

The apologists for Russia and Russia's attempt to rewrite history.

  1. "Big Nose" Polish demographic

"According to the Judaica, there were 3,351,000 Jews in Poland in September 1939.[6] From these, 55,509 are said to have been registered as survivors in June 1945. This number is said to comprise Jews having survived in Poland and Jews who returned from their wartime sojourn in the USSR. Another 13,000 Polish Jews are said to have survived as members of the Polish Army, and 1,000 would have survived posing as "Aryans" (and for some reason not counted among the 55,509). To these, the Encyclopedia Judaica generously adds 250,000 survivors in the USSR and 50,000 in camps in Germany, thus bringing the total up to 369,000 or 11% of those presumably present in 1939."

That would mean that about 2,700,000 "Big Noses" were reduced to household detergent and lampshades. But, heck, every family has known such sorrow...no big deal.

Why ruin such a wonderful day, when we could be thinking about belly button rings and pimples?

  2. The Germans would not have been in Poland without Russian complicity.

2,700,000 human beings, killed for the crime of being Jews, made up 3.8% of the 70,000,000 human beings killed as a result of the joint actions of the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany.

  3. Putin Calls Nazi-Soviet Pact Immoral

    By ANDREW E. KRAMER
    Published: September 1, 2009

"MOSCOW — Russia’s prime minister, Vladimir V. Putin, has published a lengthy article characterizing the Nazi-Soviet pact to divide Poland at the outset of World War II in 1939 as immoral, but he stressed that it was just one of a series of such deals that countries struck with the Nazis at that time.

Mr. Putin called the nonaggression pact, which included secret amendments defining spheres of influence in Eastern Europe, “analogous” to the agreement by Britain and France a year earlier at Munich to accede to the German invasion of Czechoslovakia."

While the monies that Bernie Madoff stole from his own tribe of Noses, the interest on those monies, at 7 or 8%, would have matched the US taxpayers subsidies to Israel.

But the US contingent of the "Tribe" does not want to "ante up", they'd rather eat US taxes than spend their own money on their Colony on the shores of the Eastern Med.

OPEC’s income down by $363b in seven months

A sharp decline in crude prices allied with heavy production cuts to depress OPEC’s oil export earnings by nearly $363 billion (Dh1.3 trillion) in the first seven months of 2009, official U.S. figures showed yesterday.

From $645bn in the first seven months of 2008, the income of the 12-nation Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) plummeted by 56 per cent to nearly $282bn in the first seven months of this year, showed the figures by the Energy Information Administration (EIA).

EIA of the U.S. Department of Energy gave no reason for the decline but the price of OPEC’s basket averaged about $52 in the first seven months of 2009 compared with as high as $110 in the same period of last year.

OPEC also agreed to cut its output by 4.2 million barrels per day from the beginning of 2009 to keep prices relatively firm after they crashed close to $30 a barrel in December because of the global financial distress. Before the eruption of the crisis, crude prices had climbed to their highest ever level of about $147 in late July on strong demand, market speculation and weak dollar.

EIA forecast OPEC’s earnings at about $555bn in 2009, sharply lower than the record high revenues of $968bn it achieved in 2008 because of high prices and production. But the report expected a strong recovery in the group’s income to about $667bn in 2010 as it forecasts higher prices due to a mild recovery in the global economy and consequently oil demand. A breakdown showed the UAE netted about $26bn in the first seven months of 2009.

Under your 80 year rule, the holocaust would have begun in 1929. Just to be fair, Hitler did not become a German until 1932. He became Chancellor in 1933.

If you can massage these numbers to fit your scenario, that will be quite a feat.

In the spirit of fairness, strong historical evidence suggests that "holocaust" was the rule in Europe from about the 10thC. C.E. Forgetting your other arguments for the moment, your picking on wio's spelling in the context of general level of grammar and spelling on this and other blogs seems a bit odd. Does your logic apply to all others not capitalizing America as well?

  60. You need to go back and read what he wrote. It was, quite obviously, intentional to not capitalize, America.

WIO always Capitalizes the first letter of a sentence. He has Every post that he's made. But, those two sentences that started with the name of my country, he Did Not Capitalize.

It was Not an inadvertant spelling mistake. It's even cowardly to try and portray it as such.

Whit, I said I considered "Jesus Freaks," Zionists, and Wahabi Muslims in the same boat. You said you'd "pray for me." Don't bother.

  61. In general I think it is a mistake to categorize genocide or murder of human beings. Obviously there are exceptions when the sole purpose of their murder is because of what they are, but murder is in the eye of the beholder.

We all do it to some extent. The tragedy in doing that is that if you focus on one group of victims, you weigh other groups less. That is a very slippery slope.

  62. From 1975- 1979 the entire "civilized world" did nothing when the Cambodians were being massacred wholesale, probably 2,000,000. Why were they chosen to be slaughtered?

It was known that it was happening. It was not stopped by the US, Germany, Soviet Union, UK or Israel.

It does seem to matter as to who is doing the killing and who is doing the dying.

What lessons were learned by the slaughter of innocents in WWII? By deed, not many.

One may not like the facts, but they are still facts.

  65. It certainly does seem to matter who is getting killed and by whom. On 911 3 thousand were killed, relatively small historically (2 million Cambodians ect.) but the act certainly had world wide effects.

One of the things that make the Holocaust stand out is the top down cold clinical systematic calculating nature of the slaughter. Ironically some of the "torture" memos seem to have a similar aura about them.

One thing about the benefits to the US of the money sent to Israel is the leverage it does appear to afford US. GW Bush didn't seem to use that leverage on the Israelis Obama appears as if he might be.

  66. I would not marginalize or trivialize the murder of one human being or some millions. Neither would Judaism.

Political regimes, such as Stalin's, commit/committed mass murder for political effect.

Genocide is another matter entirely. Jews were marked for EXTINCTION. Every last one: man, woman and child were to die.

The slippery slope here is the inability of some to grasp the enormity of modernity’s crime committed against the "Big Noses" and recognize that trivialization/denial is the first step to repetition.

My participation in these disputes has not as its purpose the changing of minds. If there were minds at work, we would not be having these conversations. Rather, I am obliged to defend truth against the corrupting influence of bigotry.

I do not blame the US government for failing to bomb the camps. Quite apart from the suicidal futility of the effort, every soldier, every bean, bullet and boot, every railcar diverted to the camps was one less available to support the German army on either front. In a macabre way, a condemned Jew provided as much support to the war effort by dying as did any American or Russian soldier. My opinion on this matter is not universally approved by all "Big Noses".

As to Irgun, this renegade organization did engage in at least one large scale act of calculated terrorism; it just wasn't the King David Hotel. The quick studies of anti-Semitic propaganda just don't know their history.

No there's a Papst Blue Ribbon Friday Night Fight--

for those too young, and missed the Golden Age of TV

    Boxing Decline.
The sport of professional boxing seemed to be in decline at the beginning of the 1960s. Boxing had been the most frequently televised sporting event during the 1950s because it was easy to produce: the action between two men in a small ring could be captured easily and cheaply by a single camera. By the end of the 1950s fights appeared routinely on television; Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer sponsored the Wednesday night fights on ABC, and Gillette sponsored the Friday night fights on NBC. Televised fights used up fighters and distorted an already-corrupt sport.

  92. trish,

As a general rule, I agree with you about ignoring harmless ignorance. However, when it comes to lies about Jews, those cannot be ignored by us.

For centuries buffoons accused us of such things as murdering gentile children for the use of their blood on Passover. We were accused of desecrating the body of Christ through profanation of the host. We were accused of bringing blight to vineyards. We were blamed for plague. Eventually, these lies became conventional wisdom; we died by the thousands because of them.

Now that the dogs can no longer prey on superstition to accomplish their hateful ends, they lie about other matters. If enough people come to accept the nonsense, we will again pay with our lives. Of course, centuries down the road people will be amazed at the gullibility...like that really helps.

Our tradition requires of us the saving of life - anyone's life. That has been taken by our teachers to include acting against those behaviors, such as blatant anti-Semitism, that could lead to the loss of life.

You are rightfully incensed by willful disrespect for American traditions and icons. Think about how we (Jews) feel when some crackpot publishes lies about our brothers having purposefully murdered American service members, many of whom are also our brothers.

That some rustic thinks that all Jews have aquiline proboscises is mildly amusing. However, when that stereotype is coupled with the knowing misrepresentation of history, we have entered the realm of Goebbels. That is not funny; it is pornographic; it is sadistically dangerous.

Sorry Whit, I rarely visit this blog so you will have to excuse me for not knowing all the rules. I see from the header that you are listed under Proprietors and Barkeep. Does this imply that you have the authority to break up spats between the patrons? Just asking.

Rufus introduced me to this blog a few years back. It seemed like a nice friendly place at the time. However, to me it was a little too much of “A Congenial Place for Calm Discussion”. In other words, at least during those times when I visited it, it was a little boring. Therefore, when I recently revisited The Bar, I was pleased to see that the level of conversation had devolved to the point that vitriol and vituperation now run rampant. Much more interesting.

Of course, it’s a little difficult to follow the point of some of the posts and you have to put up with the likes of:

“Rather, I am obliged to defend truth against the corrupting influence of bigotry.”

    (My god, what excruciating pomposity.)

Still, 2164th keeps the blog rolling along and I’ve been able to glean a few factoids. For instance, that my friend Rufus (aka the Corn King) has now become a hand-typing expert and profiler. Good going Ruf.

At any rate, Whit, if in your role as bouncer you could use a lighter tough with the patrons it would be appreciated. After all, given:

    "your such a dick..."

    and

    "I guess I'm a "MASS MURDERER!"

Kim Zigfeld publishes the Russia blog La Russophobe. He posted this this afternoon:

..."Apart from direct frontal assaults on the Georgian regime, Russia is also seeking to destabilize it by fomenting armed conflict in various regions of unrest, particularly Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Here Russian hypocrisy is truly breathtaking; Russia utterly rejects Chechnya’s claim to independence and righteously bellows whenever any outside nation is thought to be supporting Chechnya’s claims. Yet, Russia has no problem in fomenting discord within Georgia, seeking to encourage similar regions to break from the Georgian fold.

The spy scandal is unfolding in the immediate wake of NATO’s decision to begin “intensive dialogue” with Georgia over its admission to the NATO family, the final phase of negotiation before membership is granted. Obviously, once Georgia becomes a full-fledged member of NATO it will no longer be possible for Russia to attempt direct military intervention in Georgian affairs, so it is not surprising to see Russia reaching deep into its bag of evil tricks in a last-gasp attempt to unseat Georgia’s government and forestall admission.

The very notion of democracy, much less its practice, is under direct assault in Russia today. The Kremlin has seized control of all national television media, ended popular election of local officials, destroyed national political parties and is even beginning a program to teach Russian Orthodoxy in public schools. The Western democracies must increase their vigilance in order to forestall the forces of authoritarianism from seeping outside Russia’s borders and infiltrating the nations of the former Soviet bloc. It is very clear now that Russia has no intention of letting those nations go without a fight."

Anyone who would disparage his own Grandma so he could look better by comparison would not hesitate to use religion and God for purely mechanical advantage. He compares his efforts to God in deciding matters of life and death, and to Jesus in wanting to build the economy not on sand (boom and bust) but on rock (i.e. a mountain of debt).
He seems the epitome of the hypocrite of the gospel who prays and fasts in public for the sake of his own reputation, rather than as an address to God.
He is canny concerning the mechanics of guilt and atonement. He campaigned to a flawed and tragic nation: “this time it can be different.”
You can unload your race and class guilt or prove yourself innocent by voting for the black man! Yes you can.
In this he appeals to other self styled prophets of social “just us” who need to do penance for their class guilt through rituals of patronizing charity to the less fortunate. (But with other people’s money.)
Beyond this audience, however, his ambitious words have the sound of clanging brass. His moral over-reaching is all pride. He doesn’t long for salvation himself, but needs to play the savior to others; he is America’s big brother and everyone’s keeper. He doesn’t know how hollow and even blasphemous this sounds. I hope he keeps it up.

  112. Teenage Lottery Winner Callie Rogers Says She's Broke

When Callie Rogers was just 16 years old, she won $3 million in a British lottery drawing. Now, six years later, the 22-year-old mother of two says she has blown almost all the money. Most of the cash disappeared on spending sprees, but she estimates she dropped $400,000 on cocaine.

"I honestly wish I'd never won the lottery money -- and knowing what I know now I should have just given it all back to them,” she told in an interview published in Sunday's News of the World.

Rogers said she spent the money on homes for herself, her parents and her grandmother. She bought expensive cars and gifts and lent money to relatives. She spent more than $730,000 on designer clothes, partying and having her breasts augmented, according to the Daily Mail.

And she estimates she spent $400,000 on cocaine -- most of which went to a boyfriend.
"I was spending a fortune on cocaine, a nasty evil drug which tears your life apart," she told News of the World. "I might as well have thrown it down the toilet."
Rogers said she was far too immature to have been entrusted with a fortune.

Actually, I don't see myself as bigot. However, based on some of the posts I've noted on this blog my opinion might not account for much here.

Bigot. Racist. Homophobe. Un-American. Evil-doer. Etc. Etc. Etc. While each of these terms may have their legitimate place in a given conversation, I find these days they are used mainly by people too lazy or inept to argue their position on a given subject without quickly defaulting to the ad hominem option. Usually, this "arguement" is used in conjunction with another logical fallacy, "the straw man." You know, take someone's statement, ignore their actual position and substitute a distorted, exaggerated or misrepresented version of that position. It's the kind of language the kool-aid drinkers on the right and/or the left love to use. Heck, it's possible they may even believe it.

So, as I've said, I don't consider myself a bigot. Does it bother me being called one. No, not so much.

Do we discuss religion at the EB day-in, day-out? I think not. National Socialism is a political theory, espousing racial superiority, among other things. That is hardly the stuff of religion (unless one's predilictions run to National Socialism, of course).

In a sincere effort to lighten the mood, just today, on this very thread, I lead off with a humorous take on physiological demographics, i.e. those of the "Big Nose" in the Poland of September 1939 (a harmless enough topic).

  123. interesting....

I think that rufus and dr see me as a religious zealot/sectarian since much of what i view is thru the "glasses' of jew...

    if i am incorrect, sorry...

    but to expand...

my "sectarianness/jewishness" is not some mystic theology that i am chanting, some ethnic superiority...

rather my clinging to my "tribe" is about survival...

my group, for what ever reasons, rational and unrational are targets for murder, this has been occurring with regularity for over 2500 years...

inspite of the best murderous attempts, my small, numerically tiny group, refuse to "give up" our unique identity, and for that some call us elistist, racist etc...

but those that are not us do not understand that all we seek it the right to LIVE...

    we do not seek converts...

we do not seek vast empires...

we seek the right to eat a pizza without having our throats slit...

as we speak to each other on this blog please understand that it is NOT a considered crime to murder my pretty daughter in almost 1/3 of the world...

please understand that the only "rights" we seek are to be judged EQUALLY...

when rat points out the flaws and mistakes of individual jews as the example that all jews should be judged, when ignoring the tens of thousands of others equal of far worse that is unfair and i baulk..

to put israel under some standard that NONE of it's surrounding enemies has to even approach is unfair and i baulk...

whether rufus (the indian) understands it or not..

Without the JEW (capped for importance) there would be no western civilization PERIOD

Without the NATION OF ISRAEL today (CAPPED FOR IMPORTANCE) the world would be SOUL-LESS...

America (capped for importance) get's it's HISTORIC mission from the historic people of Israel, sounds crazy? read the Founders of our Nation...

Now with the RE-BIRTH of the State of Israel the Jew, for the 1st time in 2600 years gets it's freedom... only to confront a systemic, systematic and comprehensive attempt at the destruction of the State and it's citizens around the globe...

This genocide against Israelis is not stopped with the national debate...

Hamas, Islamic jihad, Moslem Brotherhood (and many more including Arabia, Iran) murder or fund murdering Jews, worldwide, on a daily basis...

The arrests, the attacks are global...

it's aint about US being religious, it's about US being allowed to live...

  135. A Jew who sells land to an Arab in Israel should not be allowed to lead prayers in synagogue, should not be given the right to make a blessing during the Torah reading, should not be counted among the quorum needed for public prayers and is considered an abettor to the enemies of Israel, according to a halachic decision issued on Monday night by a group of rabbis calling themselves "The New Sanhedrin."

    ...

In their decision, the Sanhedrin explained the historical background. "In recent years a phenomenon has arisen in which Arabs are buying houses and land in Jewish neighborhoods and in this way are gradually buying up these neighborhoods."

    ...

Halacha forbids the sale of land in Israel owned by Jews to non-Jews. However, there is nothing in Jewish law that prevents someone who does so from participating in prayers.

  138. Save the Forest is the order of the day, Bob:

Tuesday, 1 Sep 09, 2:04 pm PDT - CHARA Site Manager Larry Webster, who left the mountain yesterday morning, has told me that what we see on the TV feeds is exactly what the fire fighters told him they would do to deplete flammables on the ground. Their plan, which they would have implemented earlier had they not been withdrawn, was to start these groundlevel fire and literally walk along with them to keep them controlled. This is why we see no flames. The fires will consume the accumulation of needles from the many pine and fir trees as well as other scrub growth that could flame up and ignite lower limbs that would them permit the blossoming of the entire tree into flames. All the smoke we see is entirely consistent with this procedure. Larry and Dave are both delighted to see what's going on, but I've got to say that seeing smoke next to those domes is very unsettling to me. Still, I know what the fire fighters are now doing is necessary to save the Observatory.

So, the forest will remain immediately adjacent to multimillion dollar scopes and electronics.

  139. That process of careful scientific analysis and scrutiny will take years, probably decades. But it would be worth the wait.

Scholars aren't even sure how this enigmatic civilization disappeared. Was it eradicated by conquest, washed away by floods, or did its people just blend into other migrations settling the Indian subcontinent?

While Harappan cities were vast — Mohenjo-daro could have been populated by as many as 50,000 people, a staggering figure for such deep antiquity — they have left behind few towering monuments or epic ruins. Instead, we have clues in miniature, a copper figurine of a mercurial dancing girl, for example, and a treasure trove of delicately-carved seals, most no larger than a postage stamp.

  144. The tel was once described by influential American biblical archeologist William F. Albright as "perhaps the most remarkable Bronze Age site in all Palestine." It presents the most complete sequence of the transition from village to city life in ancient Canaan.

Built on a raised peninsula near an important crossroads and a fertile valley, Tel Bet Yerah became a major regional center, and its fortification systems, city gate, streets and houses reveal elements of advanced urban planning.

Modern archeological research on the mound began in the early 1920s, when E.L. Sukenik (father of the late archeologist and politician Prof. Yigael Yadin) examined finds from the section of the old Samak (Tzemah)-Tiberias road that traversed the mound along its entire length.

  145. Trypillian Culture - 6,000 BC

In the second half of the 6th millennium B.C. and in the first half of the 5th millenium the tribes settled in the basin of the Dnieper and Buh rivers. The settlements were located close to rivers, however a number of settlements have been discovered on the plateaus. Dwellings were made in the ground or half dug into the ground. The floors and fireplaces were made of clay, walls made of wood or reeds covered in clay. Roofing was made of straw or reeds.

The inhabitants were involved with animal husbandry and agriculture, fishing and gathering. Wheat, rye and peas were grown. Tools included ploughs made of antlers, stone, bone and sharpened sticks. The harvest was collected with scythes made of flint inlaid blades. The grain was milled by stone wheels. Women were involved in pottery, clothing and played a leading role in community life. Men hunted, looked out for the cattle, made tools from flint, bone and stone. Cattle were important and pigs, sheep and goats took a secondary place. The horse was domesticated. Female statues and amulets were made of clay. Rarely one comes across copper items, primarily bracelets, rings and hooks. One settlement in Korbuni, Moldova had a large number of copper items, primarily jewelry which were dated back to the beginning of the 5th millennium BC.

  146. Same folks - 4,000 BC

In the middle era the Trypillian culture spread over a wide area from Eastern Transylvania in the West to the Dniper river in he East. The population settled on the banks of the Upper and Middle Right bank of the Dniper river. The population grew consderably and they lived on plateaus near major rivers and springs. Their dwellings were built on poles in the form of circles or ovals. Dwellings were built on log floors covered in clay. Walls were woven from wood covered in clay and a clay stove was situated in the centre of the dwelling. With the growth in population, the area of agriculture also grew. Animal husbandry was popular, however hunting also continued. Tools made of flint, rock and bones were used for cultivation. Axes made of copper have been discovered mined in Volyn and in the areas around the Dniper river. Pottery making was sophisticated. Characteristics were a mono-chromal spiral ornament, painted with black paint on yellow and red base. Pottery was made by hand. Large pear-shaped pottery for the saving of grain, plates etc. Statues of female figures, figures of animals and models of houses have also been found. it is thought that the tribes were matrilineal.

  147. 3,000 BC

The late period the territory expanded to include Volyn to the river Sluch and Horyn' and both banks of the Dnieper river near Kyiv. In the area near the Black sea the inhabitants communicated with other cultures. Animal husbandry became more important. Horses became more important. The community transformed into a patriarchal structure. Communities were established on the Don and Volga rivers. Habitats were build differently, spiral ornaments disappear from pottery with a new rope-like ornament becoming popular. Different forms of ritual burial were developed in holes with elaborate burial rituals. The fate of these tribes is tied in with the introduction of Bronze Age items.
