COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Obama is a man whose ignorance, in many areas of history and policy, is simply appalling.

Obama's entire life has been insulated from any sense of reality of the nation he governs.

The Not Ready for Prime Time President
By Bruce Walker American Thinker

Pundits, including perceptive conservative opponents like Charles Krauthammer, have noted the consummate political skill of Barack Obama. There is not much doubt that Obama was able to wage a very effective campaign for the Democrat nomination and then for the presidency in the general election.

Bill Clinton was a masterful campaigner too (I had the opportunity to watch some of that first hand.) Ronald Reagan, because in part of his long career in Hollywood, could give "The Speech" a thousand times and each time it was electrifying. The word "charisma" entered our popular political language to describe John Kennedy, whose beautiful wife and boyish good looks created the myth of Camelot. Franklin Roosevelt had the same gift for making people feeling comfortable and winning elections.

But there is a huge difference between Obama, on the one hand, those other presidents on the other hand - and the difference transcends ideology. FDR, Clinton, and Obama had the same Leftist agenda. JFK was what today would be called a moderate, and the Gipper, of course, was overtly conservative. But JFK, FDR, Ronald Reagan, and Bill Clinton had the ability to govern once they had won their elections.

FDR, by the time he became president, he had served as Secretary of the Navy under Woodrow Wilson, Governor of New York, and Vice Presidential Candidate of his party in 1928. Forget the rightness or the wrongness of his policies: Franklin Roosevelt understood governance.

John Kennedy had been a war hero, a member of Congress, and the real author of some important books (like Why England Slept, in which JFK describes the dangers of appeasing evil.) The Roosevelt and Kennedy clans also grew up with a sense of aristocratic responsibility and a backdoors familiarity with power which may not have been moral, but certainly was valuable.

Ronald Reagan, in addition to being a movie star, a union president, and an ambassador for General Electric, served eight years as Governor of California and was twice an unsuccessful candidate for the Republican nomination before finally winning the nomination in 1980.

Even Bill Clinton had been a congressional candidate, then attorney general of Arkansas, then for many years governor of Arkansas before he ran for president. Clinton served a term as Chair of the National Governors Association. He was a leading member of the Democratic Leadership Council, a group considered, wrongly, to be moderate but which was influential.

Obama, while possessing many of the campaigning gifts of these presidents, has shown no ability to govern at all. This is a very dangerous situation for our nation. Our leader is a man whose ignorance, in many areas of history and policy, is simply appalling. He is rather like the "President in the Plastic Bubble." Obama's entire life has been insulated from any sense of reality of the nation he governs.

When a black Marxist professor obviously blinded by intense racial rage has to be taken to a police station by a police officer nursed in all the nuances of political correctness, Obama cannot see his friend as the wailing bigot and the white policemen as the reasonable figure. At best, Obama calls it a moral draw.

When millions of Americans spontaneously protest at Tea Parties and Town Meetings proposals for massive federal changes, Obama instructs his satrapies in government, the Democratic Party, and the media that the voters are simply uninformed. When citizens cite specific sections of federal bills, how serious does Obama expect to be taken?

When polls show his support dropping steadily as well as support for his specific policies and his party, Obama seems to think that his cronies and he have simply not repeated the same unbelievable statements often, clearly, or loudly enough. It is as if John Edwards had taken the position, when his infidelity was exposed, that he simply needed to get in front of the television camera as often as possible repeating his lies as persuasively as he could.

His pals from Chicago seem unable to help him. His partisan handlers fancy that they can simply ram whatever they want. Men like Axelrod and Emmanuel seem to think that it should be simple to push radical Leftist programs through a nation in which conservatives outnumber liberals in virtually all of the fifty states. Obama and his clique appear certain that in a modern culture in which celebrity means everything to many, that just remaining on the cover of glamour magazines will assure political support -- when actually the immature voter is the most feckless and unreliable source of muscle around.

President Obama seemingly has no clue about what he is doing, and, increasingly, it shows. What will happen when things start to go sour in Afghanistan? Our Commander-in-Chief simply will not be able to blame President Bush. After Obama has effectively destroyed the CIA, what will he do when terrorists strike? War is a nasty business in which lawyers should have little role. Has Obama noticed that Islamic terrorists are now threatening him? Does he understand that these vicious men are still threatening America?

Looking smooth on television and wowing those fawning socialites and film directors who want to be wowed brings a sort of ephemeral "popularity," but great nations are not governed on such spun sugar. Winning elections and running superpowers are very different tasks. Now, we have a president who is every second still just a candidate. As the world grows more dangerous by the day, we are "led" by the Not-Ready-For-Prime-Time-President.

  1. Can't remember where I heard speculation the other day that Obama is not the power in the White House; The speaker mentioned one of Clinton's Chiefs of Staff, John Podesta as a man that could be pulling strings.

Obama is inexperienced but he is surrounded by experienced individuals and he has Congress. The left is well positioned to create much mischief. While we're preoccupied with health care reform we can only imagine the rules being written in the back office bureaucracies of D.C.; the EPA, Education, Energy, the Interior. This is where they can really reach down and touch our lives without so much as a by-your-leave.

  3. Exactly, whit, the focus upon Obama as the personality and front man for the Democratic establishment is an error on the loyal oppositions' part.

We can revel with the joy of seeing Obama portrayed as the "Joker".

They can rant on about Government Death Panels while not even a whimper or whisper is made about the Corporate Death Panels.

They can even organize "Tea Parties" or "Million Man Marches". To better rally their troops, or make a spectacle of themselves, perhaps both.

Why they can even carry AR-15 variants in protest parades.

But the daily work of the Federal Socialists goes on, regardless. Sinless is at his desk, toiling away on the tasks assigned him, by the leadership of Obamamerica. trish's Ranger is doing his best, for God, Country and the Commander in Chief, better believe it.

The basis of Alinsky's Rules, you have to offer an alternative, which the Republicans have not done, they cannot, really, as they and Obamamerica have the same basic objectives. Growth of Federal power and authority.

The GOP proudly lit a "Thousand Points of Light", Obama and his Team will just expand that to two thousand, with little ideological and no practical objection from the GOP.

    The Revenge of Levi
New York Times - Gail Collins - ‎2 hours ago‎

Levi Johnston - you will remember him from his featured role as the father of Bristol's baby at the Republican convention - has written an article for the new issue of Vanity Fair.

While the plans for the President to ask the students of the United States to "Help" has been shelved, for the moment.

White House aides said the language was an honest misunderstanding in what was supposed to be a inspirational, pro-education message to America's youths.

Among the activities the government initially suggested for prekindergarten to sixth-grade students: that they "write letters to themselves about what they can do to help the president."

Another task recommended for students immediately after listening to the speech: to engage in a discussion about what "the president wants us to do."

Seems there are many that do not want the US to be personified by Mr Obama. Imagine that.

    ReplyDelete
  5. So while Obama will not address the students, or not ask for help when he does, the Federals still can reach into the classroom, and will.

They just won't use Mr Obama as the pointman. They will have the students write letters about helping the Country, instead of the President. Make the program a tad less Obamacentric, but not kill the program.

  8. Obama's Green Jobs Czar:

The leftist blog Machete 48 identifies STORM's influences as "third-worldist Marxism (and an often vulgar Maoism)."

Speaking to the East Bay Express, Jones said he first became radicalized in the wake of the 1992 Rodney King riots, during which time he was arrested.

"I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th," he said. "By August, I was a communist."

"I met all these young radical people of color – I mean really radical: communists and anarchists.

And it was, like, 'This is what I need to be a part of.' I spent the next ten years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary,"
    he said.
Trevor Loudon, a communist researcher and administrator of the New Zeal blog, identified several Bay area communists who worked with STORM, including Elizabeth Martinez, who helped advise Jones' Ella Baker Human Rights Center, which Jones founded to advocate civil justice.
Jones and Martinez also attended a "Challenging White Supremacy" workshop together.

Martinez was a long time Maoist who went on to join the Communist Party USA breakaway organization Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism (CCDS) in the early 1990's, according to Loudon. Martinez still serves on the CCDS council and is also a board member of the Movement for a Democratic Society, where she sits alongside former Weathermen radicals Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dorhn.
One of STORM's newsletters featured a tribute to Amilcar Cabral, the late Marxist revolutionary leader of Guinea-Bissau and the Cape Verde Islands.
The tribute is noteworthy because Jones reportedly named his son after Cabral and reportedly concludes every email with a quote from the communist leader.

  9. It does not seem like Mr Obama is afraid to delegate. Many proposals are run up the White House flag pole that appear to be really easy targets. Proposals that would not get through a rigorous vetting. Or are they straw targets, meant to be eviscerated?

There does not seem to be the Clinton era "War Room" where these ideas and proposals are fleshed out and approved. Instead disparate Obamamerica players are firing on all fronts, with seemingly little coordination or fore thought.

The Chief of Staff at the White House is often thought to be the power behind the throne. The Reagan era was fraught with rumors that James Baker was really running the show.

  19. Hizballah deploys chemical and biological weapons near Israeli border - Arab, European sources
    DEBKAfile Special Report
    September 3, 2009, 10:13 AM (GMT+02:00)
The Kuwaiti daily Al-Siyassa reported Thursday, Sept. 3, that chemical weapons were stored in the hidden Hizballah arms warehouse which blew up at Hirbet Salim near the Israeli border in mid-July. Of the 11 Hizballah operatives killed in the blast, 3 died of chemical poisoning. Hizballah denied any members had been killed or even that it maintains a weapons store in breach of UN resolutions.
DEBKAfile disclosed at the time that the Lebanese terrorists had lost five men and more were missing.
On July 21, we reported that the explosion heard on both sides of the border refuted Israeli military claims that the Lebanese border was secure and revealed that the destroyed arms dump was one of 35 Hizballah had lined up within 20 kilometers from the border. For this article, click HERE
European intelligence sources reported on Sept. 1, that Hizballah had recently boosted its military capabilities with a supply of chemical shells and short-range missiles with chemical warheads and was about to receive biological weapons as well. One source said that the Lebanese terrorist group is now one of the most sophisticated and best trained military forces in the Middle East, describing them as "bad guys with good strategic vision."
The source quoted an Arab official as predicting that Hizballah is gearing up "for something big" and there is little doubt that Iran and Syria will be helping them to obtain biological and chemical weapons.
"You're going to be reporting a lot on Hizballah in the future," he said. "They already have people on the ground in Europe and elsewhere. They are just waiting for orders to act - they are not in a hurry."
Those WMD have already been delivered, according to al Siyassa. DEBKAfile's military sources add that deliveries began some time ago. In the 2006 war in which Israel fought Hizballah, chemical defense systems were discovered in the Lebanese group's bunkers and observation posts

  37. POLL DISASTER FOR OBAMA

By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN

Published in the New York Post on September 2, 2009

This week's polls are a disaster for President Obama. The Rasmussen poll has his approval dropping to 45 percent, after several weeks at 49 percent. The Zogby poll has it even lower -- at 42 percent.

Worse yet, he's losing his political base:

    * People under 30 -- long a key element of his support -- give him no better than break-even ratings, with 41 percent approving and 41 percent disapproving of the job he's doing, according to Zogby.

    * Only 75 percent of Democrats, who formerly have supported Obama strongly, now approve of his performance in office. Zogby reports that this represents a slide of more than 10 points over the summer.

    * Even among blacks, only 74 percent approve of the job he's doing (also a drop of more than 10 points).

    * Hispanics, who voted for him by a margin of more than 40 points, now break even (36-36) when rating his performance.

Independents, the key swing group in our politics, now deliver a sharply negative 37-50 verdict on Obama's job performance. The elderly also give him negative ratings by 42-51.

This poll-implosion leaves Obama with few good options.

He obviously can't get 60 votes in the Senate for his health-care proposals in their current form. No Republican will support them, and moderate Democrats aren't likely to vote with him.

If he tries to pass it with 50 votes, using so-called reconciliation procedures, he may also fail -- because he'd also lose the votes of less-moderate Democrats who'd quail at using parliamentary tricks to pass such a radical, unpopular program.

If Obama waters down his proposals to attract moderate support, he'd lose votes on the left -- perhaps more than he'd gain, at this point.

Yet the longer he takes to resolve this political problem, the more his ratings will slip -- diminishing his power to achieve anything. No president with support in the 30s would be able to push through a program like his health-care agenda.

It now looks like health-care reform will cripple the Obama presidency, as it did Bill Clinton's in 1993.

Of course, Clinton was able to move to the center and secure re-election in 1996. But can a true believer like Obama do the same? He's shown a willingness to move to the center on foreign policy, leaving troops in Iraq and adding them in Afghanistan. But on the domestic front, the only aread where he's been willing to embrace centrist positions is education.

At best, Obama will be months if not years recovering from this disaster. In the short term, he's likely to finish September wishing he'd stayed in Martha's Vineyard.

If that's what the chemical weapons were, then there is nothing to the story, but smoke and spin. If they were something other than CS, I'm sure we'd have heard.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Al-Siyasi previously reported that Hizbullah has been smuggling chemical weapons into southern Lebanon, along with thousands of gas masks. The weapons and equipment reportedly were provided from Iran and smuggled via Syria.

The chemical weapons include mustard and nerve gas that were produced in North Korea and are destined for Katyusha rockets aimed at Israel. President Shimon Peres recently stated that Hizbullah has rearmed to the point where it has 80,000 missiles, nearly three times the number in its stockpile before the Second Lebanon War three years ago.

When Ms. Palin returned to Alaska after Mr. McCain's unsuccessful run for president, she was different, Mr. Johnston said.

“Sarah was sad for a while. She walked around the house pouting. I had assumed she was going to go back to her job as governor, but a week or two after she got back she started talking about how nice it would be to quit and write a book or do a show and make ‘triple the money.'”

“She would blatantly say, ‘I want to just take this money and quit being governor,'” Mr. Johnston said.

He also says Ms. Palin is not the hockey mom or outdoorswoman she claims to be. He said she rarely attended her oldest son's hockey games, and asked Levi how to shoot a gun.

“She says she goes hunting and lives off animal meat – I've never seen it,” Mr. Johnston said. "
