COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Why Israel is losing the latest war in Gaza.

The Inescapable Truth Of The Great Israeli Lie:

OOrah to the Existential Mutherfuckers

Knock Knock - The civilized World is getting a look at what Israel has been doing to Gaza

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power,
have the right to rise up
and shake off the existing government
and form a new one that suits them better.
This is a most valuable—a most sacred right—
a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world.
Nor is this right confined to cases in which
the whole people of an existing government
may choose to exercise it.
Any portion of such people that can, may revolutionize
and make their own so much of the territory as they inhabit.
More than this, a majority of any portion of such people
may revolutionize, putting down a minority,
intermingled with or near about them,
who may oppose their movement.
Such minority was precisely the case
of the Tories of our own revolution.
It is a quality of revolutions not to go
by old lines or old laws,
but to break up both and make new ones.”
Abraham Lincoln - Congress- January 12, 1848

  2. Social media war? I concede that Israel is losing that war....

However 50% of Hamas's rockets are used or destroyed.

I don't know the exact number, but I bet a good number of tunnels are destroyed.

And I don't know the exact number but I bet a huge number MORE of Hamas fighters are dead than Israeli fighters.

And of course, Hamas and Iran spent a very nice billion or two investing in both those tunnels and missiles and to what avail?

After 1,800 terrorists fired rockets at the CIVILIANS (both arab and jews) of Israel Hamas can claim they KILLED two. Now of course having rockets rain down hundreds a day on all parts of Israel is a war crime but who cares? Hamas is the darling of the Jew hating/Israel denying crowd...

I the end, Hamas and it's supporters will claim victory.. No matter reality...

If there is one Hamas member still alive and spitting? Israel lost...

reminds me of Monty Python's "its a flesh wound" skit...

  3. The people in Gaza would be well advised to shake off Hamas and form a new sane government, I agree with Abe Lincoln on that.

Then, if they'd stop with all the missile throwing, stop with all the being proxy for others, learn some meaningful trade, join the civilized world, detox from the Jew hatred, ingrained since the days of Martha Gellhorn and long long before, then after a decade or so they might start to get somewhere.

  5. GAZA CITY — More than 560 Palestinians have been killed in the 14-day battle with Israel. Burying the bodies has become more difficult and dangerous with each passing day.

Movement can be a risky sprint not only for ambulances but also for the beat-up vans that ferry the dead to cemeteries. The central morgue in Gaza City is overflowing, its wheezing refrigerators losing the struggle against the smell. The graveyards are filling, and mourners dig their own holes.

In the early days of the current Israeli offensive against Hamas, the militant movement that controls the Gaza Strip, people took bodies to the mosque and gathered afterward in mourning tents. There were parades and battle flags. Clerics gave defiant speeches.

No more. Funerals are now rushed, anxious family affairs that take place under the sound of Israeli artillery and drones.

The two Hamdeiah brothers were dug out of the ruins of their home in the besieged Shijaiyah district of east Gaza City on Monday morning, not long after an Israeli airstrike killed them. Moataz, 18, and Ahed, 23, were found alongside the bodies of a cousin, Yussef, 22, and three passing neighbors.

In the United States, mass marches were held in several major cities.

On the west coast, hundreds of demonstrators, including Jewish groups, marched in the streets of San Francisco to protest Israel's war in Gaza on Sunday, according to several San Francisco news outlets. In Los Angeles, hundreds of protesters who marched to the Israeli consulate in the western part of the city forced the closing of the westbound lanes of Wilshire Boulevard, local station 89.3 KPCC reported.

Jewish marchers in support of Gaza in San Francisco included individuals as well as the group Jewish Voice for Peace, which last week staged a "die-in" at Hewlett-Packard headquarters in the Bay Area to protest the company's, which "provides all PCs used by the Israeli military," according to the group.

SodaStream’s troubles might not be good news for Coke and Keurig. The sharp decline in U.S. sales, where SodaStream derives about 30 percent of its revenue, suggests that consumer demand for at-home soda machines might not be as strong as hoped. Keurig Green Mountain declined to comment.

It’s not an interpretation that Yonah Lloyd, SodaStream’s chief corporate development and communications officer, is willing to accept: “The U.S. results do not reflect a limit for demand,” he said on Wednesday. Lloyd points to continued growth of CO2 refill units used in the soda machines, which shows that StodaStream owners use it regularly. Sales of the refills spiked 27 percent to a record 1.4 million. About three-fourths of users in the U.S. use it three to four times a week, according to SodaStream.

Sodastream vs Keurig: How Coke Will Change the Home Soda Machine Market

      By Daniel Kline
      April 10, 2014

The in-home soda machine market is about to become a battleground as its established leader faces competition from two of the biggest names in the beverage business.

Home soda machine sales grew by 30% in 2013 and sales of complementary products such as CO2 carbonators, bottles, mixes, and syrups more than doubled over the previous year, according to a report from the NPD Group. Sales of CO2 carbonators, used in the soda-making process, also more than doubled in 2013, which is a good indication that consumers are actually using their machines.

Sounds like SodaStream has done such a great job that Coke and Keurig want a piece of it...

At least that’s what the makers of Coke (KO) are hoping. The soda giant announced a $1.25 billion deal last week with Keurig-maker Green Mountain Coffee (GMCR) to put an at-home soda machine in kitchens around the country by 2015. It’s a move that clearly puts a target on the back of SodaStream (SODA), the reigning king of DIY carbonation. SodaStream saw 37% year-over-year revenue growth in 2013, adding $528 million to its coffers.

  14. In the past week, several articles in multiple publications have made the claim that Evangelical Christian support for Israel is waning among members of the “millennial” generation.

Haaretz published an article by Nathan Guttman entitled “Israel is losing its grip on evangelical Christians?”; and The Middle East Quarterly published an article by David Brog, executive director of Christians United For Israel, entitled “The End of Evangelical Support For Israel?” There is some valuable information in these articles concerning some organizations that are seeking to sway the American public, specifically Evangelical Christians, against the strong relationship of friendship and alliance that exists between the US and Israel.

In the end, most of the publications articulate a fear that the millennial generation of Evangelical Christians is “turning away” from staunch support for Israel toward a more “balanced,” in effect, pro-Palestinian position. The writers’ justified sense of alarm is derived in part from the highly visible work that a few evangelical and other Christian detractors of Israel are doing in the US and on college campuses.

Syria Civil War: Bloodiest 48 Hours Sees 700 Killed as Isis Gain Influence

More than 700 people were killed in clashes over two days between pro-government forces and Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isis) militants in Syria.

Activists from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said that the deaths represented the bloodiest fighting since the civil war began in 2011.

Forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and Isis militants battled following the rebel group's capture of the Shaar gas field east of Homs city.

By Thursday 270 have been killed in clashes while the death toll for the day's combined unrest was 396.

Friday's death toll reached 314 while 90 more people are still unaccounted for. Precise numbers of Isis and pro-government casualties in the overall death toll remain unknown.

Rami Abdul Rahman, head of SOHR, said that the deaths were the first time 700 had been killed in the space of two days since the onset of the conflict.

Rahman said that Isis' attack on the gas field was the "most important so far against the [Syrian] government".

Last month, Isis declared it had formed an Islamic caliphate straddling the Iraqi-Syrian border and appointed its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as the "caliph" of all the world's Muslims.

While Isis' offensive has been focused on northern Iraq in recents months, the militants continue to hold onto territory in eastern Syria such as Deir Ezzor, seizing all of its oil fields.

The group also continue to crack down on those who fall under its control for activities counter to their radical interpretation of Islam.

Jihadists stoned to death two women accused of adultery in the northern Raqqa province after being sentenced by an Islamic court. A mob reportedly carried out the death sentence in the Al Taqaba market area last week.

The ISIS deadline for Christians to leave Mosul ended at the weekend, and thousands of people who follow the religion have left the city. And as the last group of Christians made their way out, the militants torched the 1,800-year-old Assyrian Christian church.
According to Al Arabiya, the church was burned down on Saturday, after the remaining Christians fled. It noted that the burning of the church was the latest event in the destruction of Christian property in Mosul.

The militants, who are on a mission to establish a Muslim state under Sharia laws, want to cleanse Iraq off Christians.
Besides the burning of the church, the ISIS militants have removed the cross from St. Ephrem's Cathedral, which was once the seat of the Syriac Orthodox archdiocese in Mosul, and have hoisted the black ISIS flag there instead. An ancient statue of Virgin Mary has also been broken, the New York Times reported.

That is the truth of the matter.

We Lutes - still in name only for me - are about to go extinct, the Presbys also.

Churches becoming political parties, and stupid ones to boot, is the problem.

  25. DOHA/CAIRO (Reuters) - The push for a Gaza ceasefire risks becoming mired in a regional tussle for influence between conservative Arab states and Islamist-friendly governments, with rival powers competing to take credit for a truce, analysts and some officials say.

The main protagonists are Arab heavyweight Egypt and the tiny Gulf state of Qatar, on opposite sides of a regional standoff over Hamas, the Islamist group that controls the Gaza Strip, and its ideological patron the Muslim Brotherhood.

Both camps suggest the other is motivated as much by a desire to polish diplomatic prestige and crush political adversaries as by the humanitarian goal of protecting Palestinian lives from the Israeli military.

"Gaza has turned very suddenly into the theater in which this new alignment within the Arab world is being expressed," said UK-based analyst Ghanem Nusseibeh.

"Gaza is the first test for these new alliances, and this has affected the possibility of reaching a ceasefire there."

He was referring to Qatar, Turkey, Sudan and non-Arab Iran, the main members of a loose grouping of states which believe Islamists represent the future of Middle East politics.

That camp stands in increasingly overt competition with a conservative, pro-Western group led by Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, most of whom are intent on crushing the Brotherhood and see it as a threat.

That cleavage is now apparent in the diplomacy over Gaza.

    CEASEFIRE PLAN

Qatar bankrolled the elected Muslim Brotherhood government of Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi, who was overthrown by the military a year ago. Saudi Arabia and the UAE have since poured in money to support strongman Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, who led the takeover and has since been elected president after outlawing and suppressing the Brotherhood.

Under his rule, Egypt has tightened its stranglehold on the southern end of the Gaza Strip, closing tunnels to try to block supplies of weapons and prevent militants crossing.

Egyptian officials suspect Qatar encouraged Hamas to reject a ceasefire plan Cairo put forward last week to try to end an Israeli assault that has now killed more than 500 Palestinians as well as 18 Israeli soldiers and two Israeli civilians.

Palestinian officials said the proposal contained little more than Israeli and U.S. terms for a truce. Hamas has its own demands for stopping rocket fire into Israel, including the release of prisoners and the lifting of an economic blockade.

With Egypt's initiative sidelined, all eyes turned to Doha, where visiting Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday met Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal, who lives in the Qatari capital, a senior Qatari source told Reuters.

An official in Cairo said the Gaza battle "is part of a regional conflict between Qatar, Egypt and Turkey.

"Hamas ... ran to Qatar, which Egypt hates most, to ask it for intervention, and at the end we are sure Hamas will eventually settle with an agreement that is so similar to a proposal that Egypt had offered, but with Doha's signature."

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, due in Cairo late on Monday, is likely to have to mediate between Egypt and Qatar in a bid to end the fighting in Gaza.

"The dilemma is now to get Egypt and Qatar to agree. It is obvious that Hamas had delegated Qatar to be its spokesman in the talks," said an Egyptian diplomat. "Kerry is here to try to mediate between Qatar and Egypt to agree on a deal that Hamas would approve."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

    1. Another foreign ministry source said: "Egypt will be asked by Kerry to add in Hamas' conditions and then Kerry will go to Qatar and ask it to ask Hamas to approve the amended deal."

For reasons of history and geography, Egypt has always seen itself as the most effective mediator in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in neighboring Gaza.

But critics say Egypt's strongly anti-Islamist government is trying to pressure Hamas into accepting a truce offering few concessions for the group. Its aim, they say, is to weaken the movement and allied Islamist forces in Egypt.

Hamas leaders said they were not consulted on the Egyptian move, and it did not address their demands.

With peace efforts delicately poised, Gaza now appears to be a test of strength in a regional struggle for power.

      INTERFERENCE

Emirati political scientist Abdulkhaleq Abdulla said Gaza mediation had seen "a lot of political interference".

"Qatar was unhappy with the Egyptian ceasefire (plan). They are very uncomfortable that it came from Egypt. The Qataris are trying to undermine Egypt politically, and the victim is the ceasefire that Egypt has proposed.

"The terms of the problem is -- who will present the ceasefire? Who will win the first political match between those two new camps within the Arab world?" Abdulla said.

At the root of the rift are opposing attitudes to the Muslim Brotherhood, which helped sweep Hosni Mubarak from power in Egypt in 2011 only to be ousted itself last year.

Its ideology challenges the principle of conservative dynastic rule long dominant in the Gulf: Some of its leading members are based in Qatar and broadcast their views via the country's media, angering other Gulf Arab states

Qatar is accused of using its alliance with Hamas to elbow its way into efforts to mediate between the movement and Israel.

Critics suspect Qatar wants to repair an international image clouded by months of allegations of poor labor rights, alleged corruption over the 2022 World Cup and political tensions with its Gulf Arab neighbors.

But Western governments see Qatar, maverick though it be, as a potentially significant regional mediator because of its links to Islamist movements in Egypt, Syria and elsewhere.

Qatar denies any ulterior motive and notes that Washington has openly asked it to talk to Hamas. Foreign Minister Khaled al-Attiyah said on Sunday Qatar’s role was just to facilitate communication.

      "BLOODSHED NEEDS TO STOP"

A source familiar with the matter said Qatar will not press Hamas to change or reduce its demands.

In Saudi Arabia, where suspicion of Hamas is particularly strong, as an ally of the Brotherhood and of Iran, Riyadh's main regional adversaries, newspapers have abandoned a tradition of blaming Israel alone to also attack the Palestinian group.

"The Hamas leadership, from Egyptian blood to Palestinian blood," was the headline of an opinion article by Fadi Ibrahim al-Dhahabi in the daily al-Jazeera newspaper on Sunday.

He argued that Hamas was stoking the war in Gaza not for the sake of Palestinian liberation, but as part of a wider Muslim Brotherhood campaign against Egypt's government and to win favour with Iran.

    Times Square backs Israel
    By Marion DS Dreyfus

Two police told us the crowd numbered “…Between four and five thousand.” Another pair approached, and one of those officers hiked a skeptical eyebrow and guessed, “What, maybe 8,000? Dunno, hard to guess.” Another chimed in “Lotta people.”

The supportive demonstration at 41st St. and Seventh Avenue was one avenue block from the rabbity two or three dozen desultory pro-Hamas accretion in front of the troubled and hyperpartisan New York Times. There’s an irony there if you look beneath the wrinkle. Weren’t nobody cheerily singing and energetically rousing the crowd amongst the pro-Hamas, pro-terror, no American flag -gruntled and disgruntled minions.

Catercorner across from the pro-Israel assemblage, 40th and Seventh, on the other hand, was a brand-new Maoz, an Israeli-owned vegetarian emporium we have eaten at and sampled all over the city -- salads, hummus, pita, and the like, making an honest living with healthy and reasonable fare.

Here was an anomaly: The plump population data of the Muslim moiety is, at some 370 million in the Middle East alone, quantum leaps ahead of both the Jews in the world entire, or the small population of Jews peopling Israel, somewhere in the neighborhood of 6 something million. Yet the representatives of tiny Israel outweighed the grumps huddled on 8th Avenue by endless multiples.

The flags in profusion at the Times Square demo were huge, unashamed Stars & Stripes, and flowing, shoulder-height Stars of David, draping the shoulders of the bronzed, occasionally tatted, yarmulka’ed or bare-headed handsome men, and waving along the sun-kissed arms and hands of stunning Israeli and American girls and women. There were IDF T-shirts and camo, a profusion of tastefully tatted arms and collar bones, and the occasional curious passerby trying to make it to the subway around the corner, W. 42nd and Broadway.

    1. We had all by then heard the sad, wrenching news of the recent, enormous loss of life from the Protective Edge skirmishes: 13 young Israeli lives had been snuffed out, making a total of 20 young men gone. In a nation as tight-knit and tiny as Israel, 20 men lost is an extravagantly heavy burden. As one placard announced: “We came to support, not argue.”

The police guarding the IDF and Israel support crowd stood foursquare, not watching with the tension that often marks our constabulary when the crowds are of a different provenance. How many police were there for the approximate 8,000 waving, singing, chanting, patriotic masses? “Hard to say,” said one redheaded officer. “There’s a whole load of us, that’s sure,” said his partner. I counted several dozen in the three blocks.

Up East a block, the pro-Israel talk and mutual sharing were in Hebrew, songs were classics we remember from grade school or yeshiva. Then Hatikvah. Or they were uptempo patriotic Israeli hits. Vibrant crowd, loud street reverb at the loudspeakers. Girls at the mic. Guys at the podium. Healthy young, knowledgeable, proud Jews. Where else in history…?

You knew you were among Israelis because the men looked steadily at one, spoke teasingly, flirted. It’s a different mindset and kishka involvement from the largely neutralized local testosterone batch. Women spoke easily with one another in Hebrew, or French, or accented English. And again, those girls and women were knock-it-out-of-the-park gorgeous -- Indian Jews, Ethiopian Jews, Yemenite Jews, Israeli-Israelis. Along with the cadres of long-time supportive American women and men. Not to be ignored, a roving band of Lubavitcher, circulating opportunistically but good-naturedly, offering “Do you want to laig tefillin?” (Wear phyllacteries.) Some of the nonreligious evidently said, What the hay, and donned the leathern straps and box of parchment with prayers inside.

      Delete
    2. We grew exhilarated with the optimism and ferocity of the support, unpacking our sadness over the war costing us our precious young men. Buses passed slowly, going south along Seventh; the people on the bus lettered "Dahlia", shouted encouragement from the second tier, and gave the raised fist-bump of good-natured success. Two hot guys in leathers, ultra-cool threads, shades and ice-blue helmets on Harleys sang "Am Yisroel Chai!" (Israel lives!”) along with the crowd. Cars tooted as they cruised south; the gathered patriots yelled back in cheer and reinforced unanimity.

It was leagues beyond what we had expected. The usual demo to express support for a beleaguered and misrepresented Israel or objection to some latest outrage against Jews somewhere in the Western world required usually one street with a few barriers set up across from the Israeli consulate on East 42nd and 2nd Avenue.

      This was massive.

Helped by the perfect Sunday afternoon in mid-July, there was all this buzz of utter love for being Israeli or Jewish. Signs were not the pre-printed handouts of the Left’s demos -- all the same, same italic shouting fonts. Same rude presumption of insufferable moral superiority. These signs were hand-lettered and heartfelt. The street was a mass of waving U.S. and Israeli colors and values on poles.

One elderly loon paced back and forth promising on a stick that "The End Is Near." We asked him what he was about. “Because [he began ungrammatically] both countries are going to be destroyed.” “Why?” we countered. He was evidently a low-information prophet, since Hamas is not a country. But persisting, we asked why both “nations” were facing the end of days. “Because both have not listened to G-d,” he intoned, "they did not listen to Him," the fervor of the ignored prophet hoisting him millimeters taller than his 5-foot stature. He could not explain how or in what way both had sinned enough to warrant the end.

Another guy, this one black, tromped around grumpily with a sign reading ”Repent! Follow Jesus!” We laughed and confided to him, “You sure have the wrong crowd.” “You will have His judgment,” he replied, dead serious. But he added charitably, “Bless you.”

We were at first apprehensive about the police, as we had schlepped along a wedding present in a colorful open tote that could have been regarded as an explosive problem. In Israel, no question, it would have been searched. But no officer challenged us, and the demo attendees looked more curiously at our grassy green visor than at the large-economy-sized bag carryall we held in our left hand, fat bubble wrap concealing the contents.

Signs all touted variants of Israel wants peace/Hamas wants war, or cited the one- or two-word catchwords infamous for bloody terror against innocents the world over, crimes perpetrated by terror sects, incidents well-known to news hounds: Mumbai, pizzerias, kidnaps, Munich… Benghazi.

When 7 o'clock came, after three hours of boostering and chanting, there were still enthusiastic knots of young flag carriers on every block, who sang and chanted pro-Israel-themed standards. Some danced Israeli dances.

Around the corner, a moment later, not a Hamasite, not a pro-terror advocate, was to be seen anywhere on the block where lurks … the Times.

  35. Russia to U.S.: Show Evidence Kremlin-Backed Rebels Downed MH17

But speaking late Monday, Putin's Ambassador to Malaysia Lyudmila Vorobyeva described the Obama administration's claims as "groundless" and suggested that Ukraine's government could be responsible for shooting down the jet.

"There have been a lot of accusations and finger pointing towards Russia," she said. "The U.S. claims they have evidence of what happened, where is this evidence?"

"I want to make it very clear. In Russia we are not playing these games that our Western counterparts are engaging very much in, blaming someone and accusing some parties without any evidence, we are not doing that," she added. "We're calling for a thorough investigation that could produce evidence who is responsible for this tragedy."

  36. What the Media Won’t Report About Malaysian Airlines Flight MH17
    by Ron Paul

Just days after the tragic crash of a Malaysian Airlines flight over eastern Ukraine, Western politicians and media joined together to gain the maximum propaganda value from the disaster. It had to be Russia; it had to be Putin, they said. President Obama held a press conference to claim – even before an investigation – that it was pro-Russian rebels in the region who were responsible. His ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power, did the same at the UN Security Council – just one day after the crash!
    ...
They will not report that neither Russia nor the separatists in eastern Ukraine have anything to gain but everything to lose by shooting down a passenger liner full of civilians.

They will not report that the Ukrainian government has much to gain by pinning the attack on Russia, and that the Ukrainian prime minister has already expressed his pleasure that Russia is being blamed for the attack.

They will not report that the missile that apparently shot down the plane was from a sophisticated surface-to-air missile system that requires a good deal of training that the separatists do not have.

They will not report that the separatists in eastern Ukraine have inflicted considerable losses on the Ukrainian government in the week before the plane was downed.

They will not report how similar this is to last summer’s US claim that the Assad government in Syria had used poison gas against civilians in Ghouta. Assad was also gaining the upper hand in his struggle with US-backed rebels and the US claimed that the attack came from Syrian government positions. Then, US claims led us to the brink of another war in the Middle East. At the last minute public opposition forced Obama to back down – and we have learned since then that US claims about the gas attack were false.

Of course it is entirely possible that the Obama administration and the US media has it right this time, and Russia or the separatists in eastern Ukraine either purposely or inadvertently shot down this aircraft. The real point is, it’s very difficult to get accurate information so everybody engages in propaganda. At this point it would be unwise to say the Russians did it, the Ukrainian government did it, or the rebels did it. Is it so hard to simply demand a real investigation?

Perhaps the best visualization of what the issue is, comes from Vagelis Karmiros who has collated all the recent MH-17 flight paths as tracked by Flightaware and shows that while all ten most recent paths pass safely well south of the Donetsk region, and cross the zone above the Sea of Azov, it was only today’s tragic flight that passed straight overhead Donetsk.

Why is the diversion from the traditional flight path and passage over the highlighted zone a concern? Because as the following map from the WSJ shows this is precisely where the restricted airspace is

      Graphic image

So perhaps before coming to “certain” conclusion about the involvement of this rebel or that, the key questions one should ask before casting blame, is ...
why did the pilot divert from his usual flight plan,
why did he fly above restricted airspace,
and just what, if any instructions, did Kiev air control give the pilot in the minutes before the tragic explosion?

European Union foreign ministers are meeting Tuesday in Brussels, with some calling for tougher sanctions against Russia.

Hollande told reporters that the French-made warship deal wouldn't fall under new sanctions because it was finalized in 2011. French officials have also argued that the ship would be delivered without any weapons.

Hollande said Monday night that the first warship is nearly finished, adding, "The Russians have paid. We would have to reimburse 1.1 billion euros" ($1.5 billion) if France were to cancel the deal.

  39. All eyes were on Gaza when the recently self-proclaimed "Caliph" at the helm of the "Islamic State" of Iraq and Syria gave Christians in Mosul, Iraq, 48 hours to evacuate their homes and leave behind all their possessions. This was an act of "benevolence" committed against a people who had two millennia of continuous presence in their ancestral city.

The edict noted that as Christians, they could choose conversion, submission as a protected minority, or death. The Christian leadership, it seems, had "failed" to enter into negotiations on the options for submission, and the authorities of the Islamic State said they were thus within their rights to proceed with a wholesale massacre. However, through the "mercy" of the Caliph, the Christians were ordered instead to leave the territory of the state, their belongings duly reverting to the "treasury" of the new order. This absurdity notwithstanding, the Caliph had indeed displayed relatively "humane" restraint in his edict on the expulsion of Christians. No such consideration was accorded to the countless victims of the Islamic State in Northern Iraq and Eastern Syria, where public decapitations, amputations, crucifixions, flagellation, and stonings are common punishments for "convicts," sentenced by "judges" who are often only teens. The historical, archaeological, and architectural record of this land, once the cradle of Western civilization, is now subject to systematic obliteration with acts of arson and sabotage, each meticulously documented by the perpetrators.

Islamic thinkers and intellectuals can no longer absolve themselves and their faith of responsibility for these acts of horror. It is not the function of common adherents to Islam to refute transgressions against human decency committed in the name of their religion; it is, however, the duty of those who declare themselves custodians of the faith to refute the monstrous manifestation of depravity displayed in Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Afghanistan, Somalia, Yemen, Mali, and locations in between. The price of their inaction, or woefully insufficient reactions, over decades has been the debasing of their religion into a rationale for torture and mayhem.

Hamas: leading their people to death
    By Dan Gordon

Ernest Hemingway had great advice for writers. “Write one true declarative sentence,” he said. “Then write another.”

By that standard, Papa Hemingway would be proud indeed of Sami Abu Zuhri’s literary prowess.

Sami Abu Zuhri is a Hamas spokesman. He summed up the current situation in Gaza perfectly. And he did it in two true declarative sentences.

“We ( Hamas) aren’t leading our people to destruction. We are leading them to death.”

  44. Researchers at MIT have developed a new spongelike material structure which can use 85% of incoming solar energy for converting water into steam. This spongelike structure has a layer of graphite flakes and an underlying carbon foam. This structure has many small pores. It can float on the water, and it will act as an insulator for preventing heat from escaping to the underlying liquid. As sunlight hits the structure, it creates a hotspot in the graphite layer, generating a pressure gradient that draws water up through the carbon foam. As water seeps into the graphite layer, the heat concentrated in the graphite turns the water into steam. This structure works much like a sponge. This new material is able to use 85 percent of incoming solar energy for converting water into steam. It is a significant improvement over recent approaches to solar-powered steam generation. And, this setup loses very little heat in the process, and can produce steam at relatively low solar intensity. i-e if scaled up, this setup will not require complex, costly systems to highly concentrate sunlight.

That's what we get by not having our universities teach only Qu'ran memorization.

  47. Boko Haram Islamists have hoisted their black and white flag over a town in northeastern Nigeria, after torching homes to the ground and killing more than 100 residents as they tried to flee.

Survivors told the Associated Press on Saturday that jihadists used rocket launchers and homemade bombs in their attack on Damboa town before dawn on Friday. Gunmen shot villagers as they tried to flee their burning homes.

A human rights advocate, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AP that gunmen attacked again on Friday as people were trying to bury the dead. The only defense came from vigilantes armed with clubs and homemade rifles.

Hundreds of villagers are fleeing Askira Uba, another local government area of Borno State, after receiving letters from Boko Haram threatening an attack, civil defense spokesman Abbas Gava, of the Nigerian Vigilante Group, told AP.

    1. Boko Haram forces 100 flee, and burning some homes, that is supposed to be news?

When in Levant the Israeli have force over 500,000 people to flee, and the Israeli have destroyed over 28,000 Palestinian homes, and that is to be considered a non-event.

"O"rdure is looking for equivalency, for Israeli war crimes, but he will not find it in Nigeria.
