COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Just one question: Why do they need tunnels in Gaza in the first place? Hint: Gaza is an Israeli Prison Camp

EGYPT PARTICIPATES WITH ISRAEL IN THE SHUT DOWN OF GAZA:

Israel's Gaza invasion is all about tunnels
Updated by Zack Beauchamp on July 17, 2014, 9:10 p.m. ET @zackbeauchamp zack@vox.com
Israel launched a ground invasion of Gaza on Thursday, which it says is to destroy tunnels Hamas has dug out of the Gaza Strip into Israel. Hamas doesn't just use tunnels for launching attacks against Israel, as it apparently did with the tunnel into Israel that sparked this invasion; it depends on tunnels for resupplying itself. Because of an Israeli blockade, tunnels into Israel and Egypt are the only way to move in people and supplies. But Israel hasn't previously been able to stamp out the underground passages.
So this fact, according to a March report by the Agence France-Presse, might be critical to understanding what Israel is doing: the Egyptian military said at the time that it had destroyed 1,370 tunnels that connected Gaza to Egypt.
Egypt's military government is hostile toward Hamas. In July of last year, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi's junta seized power from the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, a group that has close ties with Hamas and briefly held power in Egypt. Hamas was founded as the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood. The Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood's rise to political power was very recent and temporary; repressing it was consistent with 50 years of Egyptian military rulers' policy.
The Egyptian crackdown on the Gaza tunnels was really severe. Reuters estimated just eight days before the Egyptian announcement that there were 1,200 tunnels out of Gaza in total. So Egypt closing 1,370 tunnels is a very serious blow. Egypt also tightly restricts movement through the only major above-ground crossing that isn't Israeli-controlled, in Rafah.
That might help explain why Israel is escalating against Hamas right now. While Israel's stated tactical goal, per the prime minister's office, is to destroy "terror tunnels constructed in Gaza leading into Israeli territory," its strategic objective is to "significantly [harm] the infrastructure of Hamas." That could mean destroying any remaining supply tunnels that Egypt missed, as a senior Israeli defense forces official hinted at before the incursion. It could also mean striking Hamas at a moment when it is particularly unable to re-supply itself. Were Israel to destroy Hamas' capacity to supply itself sustainably, the group would be in a dire position.
Israel's blockade restricts the flow of weapons and military materiel into Gaza. Hamas's short-range rockets are homemade; it largely gets longer range rockets from Iran through tunnels.

But the same restrictions also seriously hurt Gaza civilians. Civilians have a hard time accessing basic supplies, like medicines and construction material. The Gaza economy is stifled, and unemployment is estimated to be over 40 percent. The tunnels are the means Gazan civilians have to deal with it. Between Israel and Egypt, they may be in rough shape.

Was and is not under Israel's control. There were border crossings, that opened to Egypt, for people and material, but HAMAS shot them up and CHASED the European Inspects fleeing for their LIVES....

Now those tunnels are about MONEY and Hamas used the tunnels to make their cash.

As for the other tunnels? the military ones? that criss cross the strip? Hold metal shops, command and control centers, weapons and munition dumps and transit ways....

      They are a military instillation.

    2. The KFC smugglers of Gaza
People are paying a fortune to have fast-food chicken brought in from Egypt in underground tunnels. But local food-stall owners aren't happy about it

Gaza is not always what people think. You want a lion? An Egyptian bride in a wedding dress? Viagra? An SUV, a double-door fridge freezer that dispenses perfect ice cubes, cigarettes, guns, Belgian chocolate? No problem. Now, as well as the above, the black market tunnels between Gaza and Egypt are bringing KFC deliveries, although the door-to-door service of around four hours makes it possibly the slowest fast-food around.

The service, according to the New York Times, requires first placing an international telephone order, making a payment by wire transfer, an Egyptian taxi driver to pick up the food from a franchise in El-Arish in the Sinai, couriers to bring it through the half-mile tunnels, a Gazan taxi driver to deliver it from the southern Gaza border to the northern Gaza office of the entrepreneur behind the scheme, and a fleet of motorbikes to take the chicken and chips – by now, presumably cold and limp – to their final destination.

And it doesn't come cheap: a bucket of 12 pieces of chicken plus chips costs around $27. Enough people in Gaza appear to think it's worth the cost and the wait to make Khalil Efrangi's venture a cautious success. In recent weeks he has delivered around 100 meals (orders are restricted to chicken, chips, coleslaw and apple pie), making a $6 profit on each.

But another Palestinian businessman, who owns some KFC and Pizza Hut franchises in the West Bank, is planning to open a restaurant within the walls and fences that surround the Gaza Strip, and a second application has been made for a KFC franchise in the tiny and crowded coastal territory.

    3. Back to the tunnels. In their heyday, Rafah, a town butting up against Gaza's border with Egypt, was the wild west of Palestine, with hundreds of underground passages snaking below the frontier, up to 50,000 Palestinians employed in construction and smuggling, and vast fortunes being made by black marketeers. "Just give me a shopping list of anything – literally anything – you want, and it will be here in two days," one tunnel owner told me a few years back. Nearly all of the animals at Gaza's South Forest zoo, including hyenas, wolves, ostriches, chimpanzees and its prize lion, came though the tunnels. Two months ago, 17-year-old Egyptian bride Manal Abu Shanar, veiled and dressed in flowing white, made the subterranean journey to her wedding in Gaza.

But the easing of the Israeli blockade since 2010 and an offensive against the tunnels by the Egyptian army – blowing them up – have had an impact. "The really good times are over," one smuggler told me last year. "But we'll find something else."

Hamas is Guilty of Crimes Against Humanity
    By Michael Curtis

In an interview on Palestinian TV on July 14, 2014, Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian Authority, addressed a question to Hamas. “What” he asked “are you trying to achieve by sending rockets (against Israel)? We prefer to fight with wisdom and politics.” Even if his second statement is dubious, his question was answered by Hamas which parenthetically refers to him as a “criminal” and speaks of him, in what must come as a surprise to Benjamin Netanyahu as a “member of Likud.”

The simple answer of Hamas is that it is trying to kill as many Jews as possible and to eliminate the State of Israel. It proclaims, in a bizarre mixed metaphor, it will “raze Israel to the ground, exterminate the cockroach’s nest, and banish all the Zionists.” It is a call for genocide.

On any rational view Hamas should be otherwise engaged. In 2005 Israel withdrew all the 21 settlements with their 9,000 settlers from the Gaza Strip, and also all synagogues. The sensible thing would have been the promotion of the Gaza beachfront on the lines of Tel Aviv. Instead, the Strip became the site for housing and then firing rockets. Since Hamas took power in 2007 it has launched more than 5,000 rockets against Israeli civilians. Even the most “evenhanded” observers must find this “disproportionate.”

The barrage of rockets launched against Israeli civilians in July 2014 must also be regarded as “disproportionate.” A commentary on Hamas aggression has come from an unexpected and improbable source, Ibrahim Khreiseh, PLO Ambassador to the UN Human Rights Council. He declared that the Hamas missiles “now being launched against Israel -- each and every missile constitutes a crime against humanity, because it is directed at civilian targets.”

In spite of the rhetoric and actions of Hamas, many in the “international community” persist in a stance of moral equivalence holding Israel and Hamas equally to blame for the fighting. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu explained the asymmetrical behavior, “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles.”

People that are guilty of crimes against humanity should be in prison.

    1. Apart from its uncontrollable hatred of Jews, it is difficult to explain the belligerent aggressiveness of Hamas at this point. Many of the countries in the Arab world are in turmoil and cannot approve or support Hamas aggression. Hamas, and indeed all Palestinians, should recognize that their issue of self-determination or statehood is no longer central, even rhetorically, to the Arab agenda.

The Arab countries are in general preoccupied with their own problems, their local interests -- feuding tribal clans, bitter confessional rivalries, and resistance to Islamist fanaticism. More specifically, four of them, Lebanon, Libya, Iraq, and Syria, are in a condition of chaos, and can barely be called “states.” The terrorist group Hizb’allah dominates Lebanon. This makes the official government unimportant, and the condition of Christians perilous. The brutal civil war in Syria has led to 200,000 deaths and millions uprooted, causing a refugee problem affecting Lebanon and Jordan.

By contrast, Israel, though it has its own internal problems, is a stable, modern state. It is now obvious that Israel is the only state established after World War I that is connected historically with a people and with a land.

      Delete
    2. Jewish occupation of the land has been traced back to at least the 12th century BC., eighteen centuries earlier than the arrival of Arabs from the Arabian Peninsula. After the end of the Israeli Kingdom, the land was occupied by a number of different ruler but some part of the indigenous Jewish population remained. After World War I the land was transferred from Ottoman Empire to the control of the Allied Powers.

The map of the Middle East was redrawn, delineating the boundaries of new states, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Yemen. However, the inherent problem since then is that the boundaries did not reflect the demographic and religious reality on the ground.

The existing Arab states are artificial creations and have little relation to any particular people. Iraq became an independent country in 1932, Syria and Lebanon in 1943, and TransJordan in 1946. They do not resemble modern nation-states. This is not to deny the Arab contribution to world culture in the past, in subjects as well as their control of territory. Arabs were once important in mathematics, medicine, astronomy, and architecture, Cities such as Cordoba, Baghdad, Damascus, and Cairo were metropolises of creativity, with relative tolerance of minority groups.

The decline of the Arab world, apart from the oil-rich states, since then has been difficult to explain in any simple way. Various factors are relevant: economic and social disparities, inferior position of women, high birthrate, displaced peasants, high unemployment, patriarchal culture in deference to elders, poor education, illiteracy, colonial intervention favoring Westernization, and the understated reality that Islam has handicapped any process of modernization.

      Delete
    3. Arab history has been a continuing series of brutal dictatorships, undemocratic autocracies, religious persecution, confessional tensions, and wars. The truth, now universally understood, is that the post World War I Arab states have not made a success of nation-building, nor do they have acceptable boundaries. They remain challenged by internal rivalries. The border between Syria and Iraq has not really existed since 2012, nor has the Syrian-Lebanese frontier.

Three important changes have occurred. The Kurds have reasserted their demand for an independent state, now virtually in existence in northern Iraq. A second is that the Christian presence is being eliminated: in 1914 Christians in the Middle East numbered about 20 per cent; they now account for about 5 per cent. The third, the forerunner of danger to come, is the establishment of an Islamic state.

That state extends from eastern Syria to western Iraq and aims to expand in the future to include, as a minimum, the areas of Palestine-Israel. The terrorist group ISIS declared the area it controlled, the province of Anbar and Fallouja, a caliphate, to be called State of the Islamic Caliphate, and its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi is the self-proclaimed Commander of the Faithful, the leader of all Muslims, the successor to the Prophet. However it is doubtful that his claim will be accepted by other Muslims, especially by the rival terrorist group al Qaida and its affiliates such as AQAP in the Arabian Peninsula. But the new state is now a major center for Islamist jihadists.

Hamas appears to be unaware of the dramatic changes in the Arab world, and even of the virulent Islamist extremism. The Western world is aware of these developments and is now even more aware of the relentless aggression of Hamas. The Obama Administration should follow the advice of the PLO delegate in Geneva and call for action against Hamas, guilty of criminal behavior.

  13. In the end, when all is said and done, it is Israel that has the upper hand. This is not because of its economic or military supremacy, which are effectively neutralized as a deterrent by Hamas’s sheer willingness to suffer, and to have fellow Palestinians suffer alongside it. Nor is it because Israel has been particularly effective in fighting the global public-relations fight so critical to the conduct of this sort of war. It isn’t even because of Israelis’ measurable and remarkable psychological resilience in the face of indiscriminate rocket fire.

Rather, Israel’s supreme advantage in this war lies in the enemy’s own misunderstanding. The entire edifice of Hamas as an organization, together with its affiliates, allies and ideological fellow travelers, is built to fight a particular kind of war with a very specific sort of enemy. The tragic and ongoing catastrophe that is Gaza will not be healed until the Palestinian national movement starts seeing Israelis for what they are, a flawed but rooted people living in its home, rather than what the Palestinians wish they were, sunburned Frenchmen in a land not their own.

Israel accepts an Egyptian-proposed Gaza cease-fire; Hamas keeps firing. Hamas deliberately aims rockets at civilians; Israel painstakingly tries to avoid them, actually telephoning civilians in the area and dropping warning charges, so-called roof knocking.

“Here’s the difference between us,” explains the Israeli prime minister. “We’re using missile defense to protect our civilians, and they’re using their civilians to protect their missiles.”

Rarely does international politics present a moment of such moral clarity. Yet we routinely hear this Israel-Gaza fighting described as a morally equivalent “cycle of violence.” This is absurd. What possible interest can Israel have in cross-border fighting? Everyone knows Hamas set off this mini-war. And everyone knows the proudly self-declared raison d’etre of Hamas: the eradication of Israel and its Jews.

Apologists for Hamas attribute the blood lust to the Israeli occupation and blockade. Occupation? Does no one remember anything? It was less than 10 years ago that worldwide television showed the Israeli army pulling die-hard settlers off synagogue roofs in Gaza as Israel uprooted its settlements, expelled its citizens, withdrew its military and turned every inch of Gaza over to the Palestinians. There was not a soldier, not a settler, not a single Israeli left in Gaza.

And there was no blockade. On the contrary. Israel wanted this new Palestinian state to succeed. To help the Gaza economy, Israel gave the Palestinians its 3,000 greenhouses that had produced fruit and flowers for export. It opened border crossings and encouraged commerce.

The whole idea was to establish the model for two states living peacefully and productively side by side. No one seems to remember that, simultaneous with the Gaza withdrawal, Israel dismantled four smaller settlements in the northern West Bank as a clear signal of Israel’s desire to leave the West Bank as well and thus achieve an amicable two-state solution.

This is not ancient history. This was nine years ago.

And how did the Gaza Palestinians react to being granted by the Israelis what no previous ruler, neither Egyptian, nor British, nor Turkish, had ever given them — an independent territory? First, they demolished the greenhouses. Then they elected Hamas. Then, instead of building a state with its attendant political and economic institutions, they spent the better part of a decade turning Gaza into a massive military base, brimming with terror weapons, to make ceaseless war on Israel.

Where are the roads and rail, the industry and infrastructure of the new Palestinian state? Nowhere. Instead, they built mile upon mile of underground tunnels to hide their weapons and, when the going gets tough, their military commanders. They spent millions importing and producing rockets, launchers, mortars, small arms, even drones. They deliberately placed them in schools, hospitals, mosques and private homes to better expose their own civilians. (Just Thursday, the U.N. announced that it found 20 rockets in a Gaza school.) And from which they fire rockets at Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.

Why? The rockets can’t even inflict serious damage, being almost uniformly intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome anti-missile system. Even West Bank leader Mahmoud Abbas has asked: “What are you trying to achieve by sending rockets?”

It makes no sense. Unless you understand, as Tuesday’s Post editorial explained, that the whole point is to draw Israeli counterfire.

This produces dead Palestinians for international television. Which is why Hamas perversely urges its own people not to seek safety when Israel drops leaflets warning of an imminent attack.

    1. To deliberately wage war so that your own people can be telegenically killed is indeed moral and tactical insanity. But it rests on a very rational premise: Given the Orwellian state of the world’s treatment of Israel (see: the U.N.’s grotesque Human Rights Council), fueled by a mix of classic anti-Semitism, near-total historical ignorance and reflexive sympathy for the ostensible Third World underdog, these eruptions featuring Palestinian casualties ultimately undermine support for Israel’s legitimacy and right to self-defense.

In a world of such Kafkaesque ethical inversions, the depravity of Hamas begins to make sense. This is a world in which the Munich massacre is a movie and the murder of Klinghoffer is an opera — both deeply sympathetic to the killers. This is a world in which the U.N. ignores humanity’s worst war criminals while incessantly condemning Israel, a state warred upon for 66 years that nonetheless goes to extraordinary lengths to avoid harming the very innocents its enemies use as shields.

It’s to the Israelis’ credit that amid all this madness they haven’t lost their moral scruples. Or their nerve. Those outside the region have the minimum obligation, therefore, to expose the madness and speak the truth. Rarely has it been so blindingly clear.

  22. Syria's Kurds have imposed compulsory military service for their men to ward off a push by self-declared jihadists in the predominantly Kurdish areas in northern Syria, Kurdish officials said.

The move reflects fears among Syrian Kurds that the ongoing offensive by the Islamic State group in their region may potentially reverse gains made by their ethnic minority in the past three years.

Juan Mohammed, a spokesman for the Kurdish city of Qamishli, said on Thursday Jazira - the largest of the three Syrian Kurdish territories in size and population - adopted the draft law this week.

It requires all adult males serve in "self-defence" duty for six months.

The law was approved on Sunday by the legislative council that acts as Jazira's local parliament. It went into effect this week.

    Territorial gains

The Kurds - a long ostracised community in Syria - have made unprecedented gains amid the three-year-old civil war, carving out a semi-autonomous territory in the north as overstretched government troops abandoned the region to focus on defending Damascus, President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

In November, the Syrian Kurds declared their own civil administration in areas under their control, dividing it into the regions of Afrin, Kobani and Jazira.

  23. Peter Beaumont in Gaza has another compelling story on the terrible human cost of the conflict. Here is how it begins.

The house of the Antez family in Sha'af looks undamaged from the outside. But the men milling around it have the dazed faces of grief that tell a different story.

Inside, the hole punched by the tank shell that hit the house, after clearing the retaining wall, is visible about 3m (10ft) off the ground.

It seems a small thing – a hole the size of a toaster. But the shell travelled through four walls, scattering pieces of shrapnel that have been gathered and placed to one side.

There were 60 people from three families sheltering inside, some under the stairs, some in a corridor leading to a half-finished room.

Following the shell's path through the house, three pools of blood punctuate where three people died – two of them children.

Salem Antez, 29, approached with a purple plastic bag and opened it, its contents terrible.

"This is my son," he said and nothing else, tears tracking down his face. Mohammad, another family member explained, was two. The other dead were Abed Ali, 24, and Mohammad Ibrahim, 13. Salem bent back to his task – his bag becoming a little heavier. "They hit us at 8.45pm," an uncle said. "We had just finished our Iftar meal and were gathered here for safety."

Great question, does the same apply to the Jews whose homes and family members have been bombed in pizza shops, schools and buses?

Or is only fair and righteous for the Palestinians to seek revenge?

Because if you are advocating "revenge" as a policy? Jews have a much bigger claim to do wonton murder against the arabs and europeans than the arabs have to to against the Jews.

Arabs have, for 13 centuries treated Jews as dogs. They have murdered at will, raped, stolen the girls they wished, they have ethnically cleansed and made slaves of Jews, they have beheaded Jews and humiliated them beyond anything ANY palestinian has every seen or even imagined.

But wait a second. Israel sits on 1/900th of the arab dominated and colonized middle east. It's population is 20% arab and there are more arabs as israeli citizens today than existed from the river to the sea in 1948.....

During the intifada uprising in Gaza in 1988, the world was horrified when Israeli soldiers buried alive four Palestinian youths. Yet the Talmud sanctions Jewish murder of Gentiles. The Talmud says “if a Jew throws his neighbor into a pit that contains a ladder, then hastens to remove the ladder, he is not liable for the death of his neighbor.”
    ...
How do Jewish authorities today respond to accusations of racism within Judaism’s most sacred literature? Deceptively. Yet they do so with a clear conscience because the Talmud teaches, “it is permitted to deceive a goi [Gentile].” Every year, on the eve of Yom Kippur, religious Jews recite the Kol Nidre prayer, which absolves them of any obligation to tell the truth to Gentiles in the following year.

Gentiles they classed not as men but as barbarians.”(7) Rabbi Johanan ben Zakki says that if anyone teaches the Talmud to a Gentile, “such a person deserves death.”(8) Judah ben Illai recommends the daily recital of the benediction: “Blessed be thou ... who has not made me a goi [or Gentile].”(9) Jews are so holy, the Talmud says, “he who smites an Israelite on the cheek is as though he has thus assaulted the divine presence.”(10)

When you didn't live here, that could explain it.

Between erecting a shantytown in Harvard Yard and disrupting a South African official’s speech in the Science Center, anti-apartheid activists at Harvard in the late 1980s pressured the University to fully divest from companies with ties to South Africa.

Even after Harvard tried to placate critics with a policy of “selective divestment,” student activists continued to protest any investment in South Africa.

Activist pressure played a key role in pushing the University to reduce its South African holdings significantly, ultimately leading to a decrease of $230 million in South Africa-based holdings between June 1986 and January 1987.

    3. Took over twenty years, but the movement grew, day by day, school by school, until it reached critical mass

Anti-apartheid protests took hold in the 1960s, particularly on the campuses of American colleges and universities. Initially, protesters wanted to end apartheid. But there were not many ways to influence the South African government using the traditional forms of protest such as picketing or demonstrations. Eventually, members of the college-based anti-apartheid movement thought of a more practical way to enact change - by pressuring their universities to divest stocks of companies doing business in the country.
      ...
At one point in the ‘80s, between one-half and one-third of the S&P 500 did business in South Africa, placing these companies among the best investments at the time. These were blue-chip stocks, steady earners that were key to the success of endowment funds. And when selling assets, universities have to pay the same fees and charges that any other investor faces. With huge amounts of money at stake, money used to continue and promote the operations of a school, it was understandably tough for college financial officers to sell those assets.
      ...
      The Success of Divestment
But while there were strong arguments against divestment, many students continued their protests. And, eventually, college administrators saw it the students' way. The first school to agree to divest its portfolio of companies doing business in South Africa was Hampshire College. By 1988, a total of 155 colleges had at least partially divested.

  35. another day in Gaza:

" ‘What was left of Ahmed lay between his dead older brother’s legs’ Add to ...

    Patrick Martin

At Kamal Odwon hospital in this northern Gaza town, a woman in her late thirties is pounding on a steel door. Mona Musallem wants to be let in so she can see her three children for the last time. They were killed in the late morning of Friday when a single Israeli tank shell hit their third-floor flat in a building near the Hamas checkpoint outside the Erez border crossing to Israel.

Eventually someone from inside the morgue pulls back the bolts that hold the double doors shut and the sobbing woman can enter.

Mohammd, 15, and his brother Ahmed, 11, were brought into the hospital’s emergency ward on a single stretcher. What was left of Ahmed lay between his dead older brother’s legs. Walla, their sister of 13, was carried in a separate stretcher, wrapped in a blanket. She died in the ambulance on the way to the hospital.

Across the Gaza Strip, the scene is being repeated in major hospitals here and in Gaza City, Khan Yunis and Rafah.

Overnight, Palestinian authorities reported that some 23 Gazans were killed as Israeli forces rained down a torrent of shells from artillery, tanks and ships. Their cover fire allowed thousands of ground forces to push across the Israeli border and advance perhaps 200 meters into Palestinian territory.

But today, in more isolated shelling, a number of civilians, many of them children have been killed: three children here in Beit Lahyia, three others in Khan Yunis, a baby in Rafah.

Israeli government and military officials originally said the incursion is to be limited, only going as far as is necessary to expose and destroy tunnels dug under the border into Israel. Such tunnels, they say, are part of the Hamas organization’s “terrorist infrastructure.”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies

    1. One such tunnel, at the southern-most portion of the frontier, was used Thursday by a squad of Hamas’s military wing, the al Qassam Brigades, to penetrate into Israeli territory. They quickly fled back through the tunnel and into Gaza after an Israeli fighter jet opened fire on them. The Israelis appeared to be waiting for them.

Israeli forces met reportedly little resistance as they advanced, though one Israeli soldier was killed and another three wounded. Now, the Israeli security cabinet, which met at midday Friday, says they have authorized the military to prepare to greatly expand the ground operation.

Last night at 8:45, in the heavy bombardment that preceded the Israeli advance, a shell landed on the home of the Enteis family in Zeitoun, east of Gaza City, one of the neighbourhoods the Israelis warned people Wednesday to evacuate.

Instead of fleeing, the extended Enteis family – 60 people – crowded into the patriarch’s three-story home.

The shell that struck the house travelled through three floors and killed two of Salem Enteis’s children, aged two and 13. This Friday morning, Mr. Enteis is walking through the room where Mohammed was playing last night, scraping up pieces of flesh from the floor and wall and placing them in a plastic bag. He shows us visiting journalists what he’s gathered.

It seems these past three days we have seen a lot of incidents of children shelled, by accident, without planning, but dead.

Considering that families here have an average of six or more children, it means that child fatalities will outnumber adults by a wide margin. When you shell into a family neighbourhood, it’s what those firing must expect.

Around the Gaza Strip, which measures roughly 40 km by 10 km, the streets are mostly empty, few people are venturing out. Coming from Zeitoun, we pass a number of families walking to the homes of relatives in safer districts. Hatam al Katati, walking with four of his eight children, says the shells Thursday night fell at the rate of one every three minutes. “Everyone was terrified, “ he said.

In some areas, such as Jabalia, northeast of Gaza City, there’s a small fruit and vegetable market where a number of women crowd round, snapping up as much as they can, bracing for the next night of shelling should Israelis decide to advance further.

It’s midday prayer time now, and rugs are spread out on the hall outside the hospital morgue. Quickly the room fills with the many men who are here: uniformed orderlies, ambulance drivers, nurses, doctors and lots of friends and relatives of patients and the deceased.

The sound of the Imam leading prayers resonates through the hall and around the hospital. He prays for the souls of the young “martyrs” Mohammed, Ahmed and Walla.

Now the bodies of the three children, shrouded in white burial sheets are being carried through the hall on the way to the nearby cemetery, amid plaintive cries of Allah hu akbar (God is great). It’s a scene being repeated frequently in Gaza on Friday.

The death toll is, what, 1? They've doubled that on the first day by losing a soldier in the ground operation. 16 dead through gunfire in Chicago on the weekend. Google revealed 263 Israeli deaths on the road last year. We've got 1 dead from the rockets and the Israelis are shooting fish in the barrel of Gaza in response.

The past 30-40 years of World History makes it easier to understand why American's were so brutal and uncaring towards the native American Indians. For the most part, these tribes were every bit as vicious and and brutal and "uncivilized" as the worst of the "radical Muslims" are today. I don't really give a flying f**k what their cult of death teaches about their demi-god or their "religion of peace". The world has seen what it is close up and personal, on their TV screens, and knows the truth about Islam.

I'm not quite at the point of "the only good Indian is a dead Indian" in regards to Muslims, but I'm not shedding tears for their dead. I will never trust a Muslim again, no matter if they wear the same business suits that I do, or if their kids play sports with my kids. Behind every Muslim is the religiously inspired potential for unbelievable cruelty and evil, if only they study the Quran enough to understand their "divine" obligations to rape, rob, murder, and subjugate.

One more thing: My feelings towards Muslims aren't fueled by pure religious hate, as is their feelings about non-Muslims, but upon experience.

Osama and his followers believe they are moving Islam in that direction. And, to repeat, Islam is not the religion of peace; it is the religion of submission, by definition.

  56. Cummins Inc. announced the development of an E85 optimized engine and powertrain that reduces greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) by as much as 50 to 80 percent when compared with a baseline gasoline-powered medium-duty truck.

Using corn-derived E85, the high thermal efficiency and power-to-weight ratio of the Cummins prototype engine results in 50 to 58 percent lower well-to-wheels CO2 emissions compared with the gasoline engine baseline. Using second-generation lignocellulosic-derived E85, the powertrain's efficiency features deliver an impressive 75 to 80 percent lower well-to-wheels CO2 emissions, depending on the drive cycle.

More than 1,000 miles and 1,500 hours have been accumulated on the Cummins ETHOS 2.8L engine over the past two-and-a-half years, demonstrating the technology is capable of far exceeding the 50 percent CO2 emissions reductions outlined in the project's goals. A final on-road validation testing phase has been underway in the Sacramento, California, area since June and continuing into this month, and is being managed by Cummins Pacific, the exclusive California and Hawaii distributor for Cummins Inc. The work was jointly funded by Cummins in partnership with the California Energy Commission.

"The Cummins ETHOS engine, developed through a research partnership with CEC, clearly demonstrates that by combining innovative engine design and combustion approaches with low-carbon alternative fuels, we can determine a path to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions," said Wayne Eckerle, Cummins vice president of research and technology, in the Cummins’ announcement.

The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L is designed specifically to use E85. To take full advantage of the favorable combustion attributes and potential of E85, the engine operates at diesel-like cylinder pressures and incorporates advanced spark-ignition technology, the company announcement said. It delivers the power (up to 250 horsepower) and peak torque (up to 450 lb-ft) of gasoline and diesel engines nearly twice its 2.8-liter displacement.

    The Cummins ETHOS 2.8L engine also incorporates . . . . .
