COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

An astonishing new poll of likely voters in Ohio, a key swing state in November’s election, shows Trump is in an absolute dead heat with Hillary Clinton here, at 44% each.

CLEVELAND (MarketWatch) — Yes, Donald Trump has had a terrible convention so far. But if you think that rules him out completely, think again.
An astonishing new poll of likely voters in Ohio, a key swing state in November’s election, shows Trump is in an absolute dead heat with Hillary Clinton here, at 44% each.
The so-called internals, or fine print, support the top-line message. Similar numbers of voters say they are moved by negatives as well as positives. Both candidates have similar “unfavorables,” and both face similar numbers of “no way, no how” responses as well.
The polls were conducted on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. So they included the poor start to the convention in Cleveland for Trump, but did not reflect any fallout from the Ted Cruz row — nor from Trump’s stunning interview with the New York Times, in which he appeared ready to abandon NATO allies.
There is no serious dispute that this has been a really bad convention for Trump. It will probably give him no bounce at all. And, more importantly, it has exposed a Trump campaign that is inept and incompetent at the highest levels. So it’s hard to see why the betting markets would still give him a one-in-three chance of winning in November.

However, as the latest poll shows, this election is far from a done deal. Conventions aren’t everything. Mike Dukakis coordinated a brilliant Democratic convention in 1988, giving him a 17 point lead, and then went on to totally blow the election. There are few instances, if any, of it happening the other way round, someone coming back to win after a terrible convention, but it can’t be ruled out either.

Hillary Clinton and her allies continue to outspend Donald Trump and his backers over the airwaves by a 15-to-1 margin, according to ad-spending data from SMG Delta.

Team Clinton has spent $57 million on ads so far in the general election -- $25 million coming from the campaign and another $32 million from pro-Clinton Super PACs.

By comparison, Team Trump has aired $3.6 million in ads, with all of the spending from two outside groups, the National Rifle Association ($2.3 million) and Rebuilding America Now ($1.3 million). The Trump campaign has yet to spend a single cent on ads so far in the general election.

Last week, the totals were $45 million for Team Clinton, versus $2.8 million for Team Trump.

Second question, how can you claim to be great negotiator if you can't negotiate endorsement from a speaker YOU invite to YOUR convention?

The day is still young though.

Trump knew and wanted Lyin' Ted to behave as he did, thinking thereby that Ted would be taking himself out of any further consideration in the future, 2020 coming immediately to mind.

      I Choose Ted

      by Jonah Goldberg July 21, 2016 9:16 AM @JonahNRO

I find it nothing short of hilarious how so many seasoned political journalists (including many of my colleagues — and betters — at Fox) are visibly shocked and appalled by what Cruz did last night. Ever since I was a kid, the political press — left, right and center — has whined that there’s no drama at conventions any more. It’s all scripted. It’s just an infomercial. It’s just such a shame.

Well here comes Ted Cruz providing exactly the sort of drama they yearned for and many of these same voices are aghast at Ted Cruz’s effrontery. The word has gone out across the land: This is an outrage! Not since Caligula appointed his horse to the Roman senate has a political figure showed such contempt for decorum and the solemnity of politics! Last night and this morning, across the news channels, I’ve watched many people I respect -– and a great many more I don’t — talk about what a sore loser Cruz is. There are two things to say about that....

On March 16, 2011, McCaskill told reporters that she was "embarrassed" about revelations that her office had used taxpayer money for the senator's use of a private airplane she co-owned with her husband and friends. According to a government audit, the plane was used for 90 flights taken between Washington, D.C., and her home in suburban St. Louis, as well as to numerous sites around the state of Missouri.

As soon as the story broke, Senator McCaskill sent a check for $88,000 to the U.S. Treasury as reimbursement for the flights.[

On March 21, 2011, Politico reported that McCaskill had failed to pay more than $280,000 in property taxes on the plane and was planning to sell it.

“I have convinced my husband to sell the damn plane”, McCaskill said on a conference call with reporters. “I will never set foot on the plane again”

Portugal decriminalized the use of all drugs in 2001.

Weed, cocaine, heroin, you name it -- Portugal decided to treat possession and use of small quantities of these drugs as a public health issue, not a criminal one. The drugs were still illegal, of course.

Despite getting all the credit, however, most experts can agree that decriminalization isn’t what solved Portugal’s heroin problem; rather, it was the renewed emphasis on health. The tide changed once Portuguese authorities decided to view drug addiction as a health and social issue, rather than a criminal problem.

      8:45 AM, Jul 21, 2016 | By Fred Barnes

      Cleveland

The book Clinton Cash was on the New York Times bestseller list for 12 weeks last year and sold roughly 200,000 copies. It tells the story of how Bill and Hillary Clinton made an estimated $229,319,855 between the time they left the White House in 2001 and 2014. That includes fees of more than $500,000 that Bill Clinton received for 11 speeches while she was secretary of state from 2001 to 2005.

It’s a powerful story of money-grubbing and sleaze. And now it's been made into a 65-minute, impeccably researched documentary narrated by Peter Schweizer, the book's author....

I've said before I agree with about 90% of the issues he has identified. It's the solutions he offers (when he suggests any at all) that are either ridiculous or downright scary.

      Law and Order

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has announced a three-month state of emergency for Turkey following a failed coup attempt over the weekend.

The state of emergency will give broad powers to security forces and the government, NPR's Peter Kenyon reports. Erdogan says it will make it more efficient to round up, question and try people accused of supporting the coup.

"Erdogan says its necessary to protect the rule of law and democracy,
but he also made clear these would be used extensively against the Pennsylvania-based cleric Fethullah Gulen, a former ally now accused of fomenting this failed coup," Peter says.

About 10,000 people are accused of supporting the coup, and 50,000 or more accused of backing Gulen, Peter says.

And under the state of emergency, laws could be passed to grant new powers to the government, he reports.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera English, Erdogan compared his government's reaction to the coup to other countries' responses to security threats.

"For example, in the face of terrorist acts, France took numerous steps and certain stands," he said, according to Al-Jazeera.

"Did they not detain people en masse? Did they not arrest people in very high numbers?"

Erdogan told the broadcaster more than 9,000 people have been detained, nearly 20,000 charged by a court and some 60,000 purged from state institutions, according to Peter and Al-Jazeera...

Cruz's rebuke ignited a hot scene around the senator as soon as he left the stage. People averted their eyes from Cruz and his wife as they walked with their security detail on the skybox level of boisterous Republicans.

The reaction from the floor was also swift and harsh.
Newt Gingrich, appearing after Cruz, argued that Cruz's advocacy for constitutionalism meant that he, implicitly, endorsed Trump -- words he himself did not say.

  50. Poor, poor Quirk.

He couldn't be optimistic if his very life depended on it.

It's a dark time, a dark dark time.....

Hence we need a little cheering up -

    In a Dark Time

In a dark time, the eye begins to see,
    I meet my shadow in the deepening shade;
I hear my echo in the echoing wood--
A lord of nature weeping to a tree,
I live between the heron and the wren,
Beasts of the hill and serpents of the den.

What's madness but nobility of soul
At odds with circumstance? The day's on fire!
I know the purity of pure despair,
My shadow pinned against a sweating wall,
That place among the rocks--is it a cave,
Or winding path? The edge is what I have.

    A steady storm of correspondences!
A night flowing with birds, a ragged moon,
And in broad day the midnight come again!
A man goes far to find out what he is--
Death of the self in a long, tearless night,
All natural shapes blazing unnatural light.

Dark, dark my light, and darker my desire.
My soul, like some heat-maddened summer fly,
Keeps buzzing at the sill. Which I is I?
A fallen man, I climb out of my fear.
The mind enters itself, and God the mind,
And one is One, free in the tearing wind.

What's dark to us is light to them, our dead departed.

  58. We have read and heard much about the dissatisfaction many Americans feel about the major-party presidential candidates. The Associated Press article “Fear factor: Americans scared of their options” in Friday’s Dispatch underlined this when it cited polls stating that 81 percent of Americans would be afraid if one of them won the presidency, with 25 percent scared of both.

We don't have to settle for either one. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian candidate, has steadily risen in both national and key state polls since his nomination in May, now garnering 10-15 percent support. In a recent Fox News poll, he outranked Hillary Clinton 23 percent to 22 percent among independents. A Pew Research Poll has him leading Donald Trump 22 percent to 21 percent among millennials. And a poll of Kansas voters showed him outranking Trump among Hispanics.

It is very possible that Johnson will achieve the 15 percent threshold in five major polls that would qualify him to appear in the presidential debates.

Americans are desperately looking for a president who really will reduce the size, scope and cost of the federal government, is committed to peace at home and abroad and has the governing experience to propose sound policy. Both Johnson and his running mate, Bill Weld, were Republican governors of heavily Democratic states. As governor of New Mexico, Johnson vetoed more legislation than the other 49 governors combined and reduced the size and cost of state government. Neither Trump nor Clinton has comparable experience.

  59. What astounds me is that the American public willingly accepts that these are the two choices the political gangs that run our country are offering us. And until this country wakes up and realizes that there are in fact more than two choices, despite what mainstream media shoves down our throats, then this is what we're going to get.

Ron Paul mentioned that he's probably going to vote Libertarian this year. He should. After all, he was their presidential nominee back in 1988. Come November, I will join him, voting for Libertarian presidential candidate Gary Johnson again, just like I did in 2012. He's on the ballot in all 50 states, and this year I hope voters won't be lemmings. This is the year for a third party to rise, if there ever was one. This is the time for the people to stand up and say, "We've had enough, and we're still in charge." Whether voters exercise that option, we'll have to see.

I like everything Gary Johnson has said so far. He's fiscally conservative and socially liberal – something neither Democrats nor Republicans can offer. He also has a solid plan for bringing our troops home and restoring our economy. And, like me, he's a firm believer that marijuana should be legal.

  62. Paul Krugman: Donald Trump, the Siberian Candidate

    Is it more than ignorance?:

Donald Trump, the Siberian Candidate, by Paul Krugman, NY Times: If elected, would Donald Trump be Vladimir Putin’s man in the White House? This should be a ludicrous, outrageous question. After all, he must be a patriot — he even wears hats promising to make America great again. ...

I’m not talking about merely admiring Mr. Putin’s performance — being impressed by the de facto dictator’s “strength,” and wanting to emulate his actions. I am, instead, talking about indications that Mr. Trump would ... actually follow a pro-Putin foreign policy, at the expense of America’s allies and her own self-interest.
That’s not to deny that Mr. Trump does, indeed, admire Mr. Putin. ... But admiration for Putinism isn’t unusual in Mr. Trump’s party. ...

All of this is, or should be, deeply disturbing..., what we’re now seeing ... goes beyond emulation, and is starting to look like subservience.

First, there was the Ukraine issue — one on which Republican leaders have consistently ... criticized Mr. Obama for insufficient action... And the G.O.P. platform was going to include a statement reaffirming this line, but it was watered down to blandness on the insistence of Trump representatives.

    1. Then came Mr. Trump’s interview with The New York Times, in which ... he declared that even if Russia attacked members of NATO he would come to their aid only if those allies — which we are bound by treaty to defend — have “fulfilled their obligations to us.”

Now, some of this is Mr. Trump’s deep ignorance of policy... But is there more to the story? Is there some specific channel of influence?
We do know that Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump’s campaign manager, has worked as a consultant for various dictators, and was for years on the payroll of Viktor Yanukovych, the former Ukrainian president and a Putin ally.

And there are reasons to wonder about Mr. Trump’s own financial interests. Remember, we know nothing about the true state of his business empire, and he has refused to release his taxes... We do know that he has substantial if murky involvement with wealthy Russians and Russian businesses. ...

At some level, Mr. Trump’s motives shouldn’t matter. We should be horrified at the spectacle of a major-party candidate casually suggesting that he might abandon American allies — just as we should be horrified when that same candidate suggests that he might welsh on American financial obligations. But there’s something very strange and disturbing going on here, and it should not be ignored.

    2. Wasn't it the Democrats suggesting a National Police Force for USA ?

It doesn't sound like a Republican Party sort of idea.

In fact I believe the idea was first discussed in the 'inner reaches' of the O'bozo Regime.

      Am I correct ?

    5. I have heard Trump urging support of the Police, but I can't recall him saying form a National Police Force.

If he has, or does, he gets three strikes and out from me.
