COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Commerce Secretary? Would you buy a used car from Bill Richardson?

Obama to nominate Richardson for Cabinet

Bill Richardson is New Mexico's governor, former U.N. ambassador
Richardson to be announced as commerce secretary nominee Wednesday

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President-elect Barack Obama plans to nominate New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson to be secretary of commerce, a Democratic source told CNN on Tuesday.

New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson was a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination this year.

The former Democratic presidential candidate's name has been bandied about as the next head of Commerce.

Obama spoke with Richardson about the position November 14, a senior Democratic source said. The source said Richardson has always been on Obama's list of possibilities for the key Cabinet position.

Richardson, 61, also traveled to Chicago, Illinois, in November to meet with Obama, according to a source.

"He brings to this plate, in particular in an era where the economy is the focus of attention, a lot of skills that could be put to use -- perhaps opening up marketplaces for U.S. products abroad," CNN senior political correspondent Candy Crowley said.

"In New Mexico, he sought to bring in new businesses and to create jobs ... so the Obama team considers this part of the economic team."

AMONG the significant dates in the history of KahlĂșa, the Mexican coffee liqueur, surely March 6, 1998, rates a mention.

That was the release date of “The Big Lebowski,” the Coen Brothers movie about an aging slacker who calls himself the Dude, and who, after a thug urinates on his prized rug, becomes caught up in a Chandleresque mystery.

Played with slouchy brio by Jeff Bridges, the Dude’s chief pursuits involve bowling, avoiding work and drinking White Russians, the sweet cocktail made with vodka, KahlĂșa and cream or milk.

Newt's polling on the subject is informative. Looks like Obamasan's folks have made note of Newt's work. No one here even wants to discuss it. Leaving Team Obama the center, right and left of the field to play on, unopposed.

On the Fox News program Hannity & Colmes Monday night, analyst Dick Morris made the absolutely critical point that President Bush has taken the country so far to the left, in terms of his socialist-style Wall Street bailout program and his integration of the U.S. economy into a new emerging international financial order, that anything Barack Obama does in this area seems almost mainstream. This is because what we were expecting from Obama we are now getting from Bush. So Obama doesn't look so radical anymore.

There are fewer GOP Senators to intimidate, not enough to even filibuster the effort. McCain and Kyl, Saxby Chambliss and Lydsey Graham are already committed, to reform.

    ReplyDelete
  13. The Republicans have delivered the Nation to the Federal Socialists, even Dick Morris agrees.

Tied a ribbon around it, they did.

Team Obama will be the third term of the Bush Administration, ain't that funny.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Arpaio will build the fence, securing the border. When that happens, more than half of the opposition to reform will evaporate.

The fence could have been in place two years ago, with the same affect on reform.

    Not arguing. Just observing.

    ReplyDelete
  15. If you liked GW Bush, why then Obama will suit you, just fine.

More of the same, is one the way.

    Staying the course!

    ReplyDelete
  16. But, lineman, Bush was in office, then.

Obama is more pragmatic, he'll build the fence AND open the border. Bush liked the gray labor market economy, it is extensive in Texas and Arkansas.

Obama, an urban citizen, is not so enthralled by those that avoid paying their fair share of taxes.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Look at Newt's polling, the answers are there.

    Secure the border = 86 to 12
More workers allowed in = 83 to 16

    There is your winning position

    ReplyDelete
  18. The electorate did not believe that Bush would build the fence.

Their instincts right on target, if Obama assigns that task to Sheriff Joe Arpaio, that misgiving evaporates.

    ReplyDelete
  19. No doubt some will still insist Carter was worse than Bush:
At least we were still a capitalist country amneable to RR's fixes.
Who could reverse what Bush has done?
    ...in a multitude of areas.

    ReplyDelete
  20. With a secure border, the new arrivals can be controlled, their friends already here can be sorted out for legal amnesty, or not, and the burden on the tax payers can be reduced by legitimizing the labor pool. Absent that border control, it's chaos.

If you're looking for an argument, I'm not likely to give it.

    ReplyDelete
  21. And there's blame to be shared among both parties and with Congress as well as just Bush.

    ReplyDelete
  22. What was the date of Newt's poll, 'Rat?

  23. I saw something not long ago to that effect, Doug.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, the credit for the current situation goes beyond Mr Bush.

That he did so poorly with the reform issue, he and McCain, boded ill for the General Election, as proved the case. There was a break down of trustworthiness in the GOP leadership by their own base.

Newt's latest work indicates that almost NO ONE will argue with that position, lineman.

Secure the border, let in the workers, legally.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Again, Newt tells US where we're at

English should be the official language of government. (87 to 11)

All election ballots and other government documents should be printed in English. (74 to 23)

New immigrants should be required to learn English. (83 to 17)

Government should offer intensive English language instruction to all who need it, including stipends to help immigrants attend the programs. (83 to 15)

Businesses should be able to require employees to speak the English language while on the job. (80 to 17)

That we have lost that knowledge,

    Or mourn.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Probably mourn, but I'm not good at that -- learning other languages is hard for me. I used to be able to read the Mexico City newspapers is all the further I got. But a country needs one language to really stick together. For those that are good at it, they should go for it, by all means.

By the way, I mentioned the carry a short barreled shotgun on the levee idea to my wife, and, surprise, she wasn't really put off by the idea. I just can't imagine it, though :)

  50. What would happen if roving gunmen infiltrated U.S. cities and started shooting? Most U.S. police departments aren't well prepared to deal with such "active shooters," as they're called. Police are trained to cordon off an area that's under attack and then call in a paramilitary SWAT team to root out the gunmen. But what if the attackers keep moving and shooting? The response can be haphazard, as was clear in such disparate incidents as the 2002 Beltway sniper attacks in the Washington area and last year's massacre at Virginia Tech.

"Mumbai is a worst-case 'active shooter' problem," says a former CIA officer who helped organize a DHS pilot program on the subject last summer for police chiefs. "It had multiple shooters, multiple locations, mobile threats, willingness to fight the first responders and follow-on SWAT/commando units, well-equipped and well-trained operatives, and a willingness to die. Police department commanders in America should be scratching their heads and praying."

Forewarned is forearmed, and the Mumbai attacks are a powerful demonstration of the danger for cities around the world. The reason to discuss such threats isn't to feed anti-terrorism hysteria. There was far too much of that fear-mongering and spasmodic reaction after Sept. 11, which had the effect of destabilizing the United States almost as much as it did its enemies. The challenge is to understand the adversary so that if an attack comes, the authorities will respond with cool heads and steady aim.

Reporting from Washington -- Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said he accepted President-elect Barack Obama's approach to scheduled troop reductions in Iraq, arguing Tuesday that the hotly debated subject of timelines for withdrawal largely had been settled by a new U.S.-Iraq security agreement.

"That bridge has been crossed," Gates said a day after he formally agreed to remain as Obama's Defense secretary. "And so the question is: How do we do this in a responsible way?"
    ...
He also said that closing the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, would be a high priority, but could require new legislation, such as a measure preventing former detainees from seeking asylum in the United States.

And Gates said that the next request for emergency war funding, an estimated $83 billion, would be delivered to Congress in a matter of weeks. If approved, it would bring the cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to about $947 billion.

Obama assembled an experienced team of strong-willed national security experts, and Gates said that he expected there would be differences of opinion. But he emphasized that Obama would make the big strategic decisions.

  66. Hawaii Joins Better Place Electric Car Network
    ARTICLE DATE: 12.03.08
    By Steven Volynets, TechnoRide

Hawaii joined California Tuesday as the second state in the nation to link to the Better Place network of plug-in electric vehicles.

The plan was presented by Governor Linda Lingle and Shai Agassi, Founder and CEO of California-based Better Place, as a scaled model for the adoption of battery-powered transport nationwide.

Better Place, a venture-backed company designed to reduce demands on petroleum through infrastructure favoring electric cars, says that Hawaii residents, who pay some of the highest gasoline prices in the U.S., will see the first batch of electric cars, along with a network of charging stations, within 18 months ahead of the 2012 mass-market availability.

"Hawaii, with its ready access to renewable energy resources like solar, wind, wave and geothermal, is the ideal location to serve as a blueprint for the rest of the U.S. in terms of reducing our dependence on foreign oil, growing our renewable energy portfolio and creating an infrastructure that will stabilize our economy," said Agassi.

Last month, the mayors of San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland announced that they too would partner with Better Place for a series of initiatives aimed at making the region the electric vehicle capital of the U.S. by 2012.

  86. I saw a picture today of a Detroit auto-exec driving to DC in a mid-sized sedan instead of using his corporate plane.

    What a fucking farce.

Harry and Maxine and Nancy and that fat toothless faggot gummer from Mass, what's-his-name, Barney, and Chris and Wax-man...Barbara, Diane, etc. They got all the executives dancing to their tune. None of those asshats could run a lemonade stand.

I see the UAW has offered a concession of a deferred payment into their union managed health care program. I have a suggestion. Why don't they accept the same health care package the Congressionals have instead of life time full coverage for free. Oh, wait a minute. That is the same health care package the Congressionals have. Scratch that idea.

It's a Tacoma, but as a matter of fact, he offered to haul the wood for me with his "new" truck. Problem is there's no wood because the chainsaw is broken. Shock mount spring snapped. It's time to head for the Ozarks anyhow.

  88. GM and the UAW just need to hang on until we all have 'free' universal national health care, then they won't have the health care to budget for.

  89. The people over at TexasDarlin' can't understand why the media is paying no attention to the seventeen lawsuits filed against Obama, and I can't understand it either. It's not enough to say they think the suits are crap, when covering them would sell copy. Some of them think there is some intimidation, or other factor going on. The Liddy Show is the only outlet that has covered it at all. Beats me.

  90. Well at least Pravda is covering the story :)

  91. The new guys at work say, "Who is G. Gordon Liddy?" Which makes me officially old.
