COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

China so sorry, it won't happen again.

China has been on quite a roll lately putting on e very positive face to the world. It has expansive diplomatic and commercial contacts and is seen as a positive force for prosperity and peace. The blowing up of the obsolete satellite was if nothing else, off-message. There has been some discussion that the military may have not gotten the memo on cuddliness. Anyway, these things happen. A little "so sorry", and back to smiling, or as the EB's Desert Rat would say, "Back on the sunny side."

BEIJING -- "China opposes the weaponization of space and any arms race in space, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Jianchao said Tuesday in response to questions concerning China's space experiment recently.

"What needs to be stressed is that China has always supported the peaceful use of space," Liu said.

China has never participated and will never participate in any arms race in outer space. This test was not directed at any country and does not pose a threat to any country, he said.

The spokesman also revealed that China has informed some countries including Japan and the United States about the experiment."
