COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Why Trump Will Win the Election

Are Elites to Blame for Trump’s Political Success? Yes, According to a New York Debate Audience

Posted on Sep 15, 2016 TRUTHDIG

The nonprofit debate organization Intelligence Squared facilitated a remarkable spectacle Tuesday evening: two elite conservative media pundits arguing that the failures of their social and economic class are responsible for the rise of Donald Trump—and for his winning by a large margin.

Ben Domenech, publisher of The Federalist and host of “The Federalist Radio Hour,” began by sounding like historian and author Thomas Frank. Frank’s latest book, “Listen, Liberal,” accused Democrats of ignoring the plight of the working class.

Trump “is neither a disease nor a symptom,” Domenech said. “He is a beta test for a cure. Americans are turning to him because he represents the breakdown of the post-Cold War left/right politics of the nation, a breakdown that has been happening in slow motion for the past two decades, fueled by a dramatic decline of trust in America’s elites.

“Imagine you are one of the millions of middle-aged, unemployed, white Americans with a high school degree,” he continued. “There are today seven million men in prime working age who have dropped out of the labor force. That’s 15 percent. That’s higher than ever—than since the end of the Great Depression. There are millions more who know people personally experiencing this kind of pain as a brother, as an uncle, as a son. Moved from unemployment to disability, you will receive sufficient benefits to subsist, around $1,200 a month, which is enough to pay for the alcohol and the drugs that help you self-medicate.
“Your life is essentially one marked by hopelessness, desperation and anxiety. You are statistically unlikely to ever re-enter the workforce and alone among all demographics the likelihood of suicide is rising for you. The things that make life not only endurable but happy are: religious faith now lost to you, family which is fractured, community which is disintegrated, and work which you find hard to come by. The TV screen flickers with images of people living lives you could never hope to emulate. Your situation is bleak and while our soma today is better it is still not a replacement for the pursuit of happiness. Your tomorrows look dark, but the past, even the grimy parts of it, look like gold. And then a golden-haired man comes on TV, a man who represents a vision of what you might hope your life could be like, a man who is a traitor to his class, who defies the elites, who is rich and successful, who comes from the world of the elites but is strong enough to reject them and their lives and he tells you it’s not your fault.

“It’s not your fault that your life is the way it is. He tells you it’s the fault of immigrants and bad trade deals and wasteful, pointless wars based on lies. He tells you the problem with the elites is not that they are too conservative or that they are too liberal, but that they are stupid and don’t care about you. He tells you with confidence that he alone can make everything great again and you listen. In the absence of the failures of the elites, could Donald Trump succeed? The answer is no. Our elite leadership class sowed the wind and Donald Trump is the whirlwind they’ve reaped.”

Arguing against Domenech, Jennifer Rubin of The Washington Post’s “Right Turn” blog took a swipe at her opponents for taking a position she would expect from such members of the “unhinged left” as Bernie Sanders and Noam Chomsky.
Rubin failed to convince her audience, however. At the end of the hour-and-a-half exchange, the share of the audience inclined to blame elites for the rise of Trump rose 26 points, from 32 percent before the debate to 58 percent afterward. The share of the audience that disagreed with the motion rose only 6 points, from 27 percent before the debate to 33 percent afterward.

Nine percent of the audience remained undecided, far fewer than the 44 percent share who weren’t sure before they heard the arguments.

Joining Domenech was Timothy Carney, senior political columnist at the Washington Examiner and visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute. Accompanying Rubin was Bret Stephens, deputy editor of The Wall Street Journal’s editorial page and Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist for “Global View,” the paper’s foreign affairs column. John Donvan, a regular correspondent for ABC’s Nightline, moderated the debate.

Intelligence Squared recently won the praise of Harvard historian Jill Lepore, who in a September issue of The New Yorker described the organization’s programming as “fantastic.”

  4. Were the election held today, Hillary Clinton would probably win a clear majority of the Electoral College.

Her problem: The election is almost two months off.

Sixty days out, one senses she has lost momentum – the “Big Mo” of which George H. W. Bush boasted following his Iowa triumph in 1980 – and her campaign is in a rut, furiously spinning its wheels.

The commander in chief forum last Wednesday night should have been a showcase for the ex-secretary of state’s superior knowledge and experience.

Instead, Clinton looked like a witness before a grand jury, forced to explain her past mistakes and mishandling of classified emails at State.

“Of the two candidates,” The New York Times reported, “Mrs. Clinton faced by far the tougher and most probing questions from the moderator, Matt Lauer of NBC, and from an audience of military veterans about her use of private email, her vote authorizing the Iraq war, her hawkish foreign policy views...”

On defense most of the time, Clinton scored few points.

And with a blistering attack on Lauer, the Times all but threw in the towel and conceded that the Donald won the night.

“Moderator of Clinton-Trump Forum Fields A Storm of Criticism,” was the headline as analyst Michael Grynbaum piled on:

“Mr. Lauer found himself besieged on Wednesday evening by critics of all political stripes, who accused the anchor of unfairness, sloppiness, and even sexism in his handling of the event.”

When your allies are ripping the refs, you’ve probably lost the game.

Indeed, in this dress rehearsal for the debates, Donald Trump played Trump, while Clinton was cast in the role of Mexican President Pena Nieto, who just fired the finance minister who told him to invite the Donald to Mexico City for a talk.

There are other indices the tide is turning against Clinton.

Consider the near hysteria of a media that has taken to airing charges, in echo of “Tail Gunner Joe” McCarthy, that Donald Trump is somehow the conscious agent of a Kremlin conspiracy.

Why? Because Trump accepts the compliments of Vladimir Putin and refuses to call the Russian ruler a “thug,” which is now apparently the mark of a statesman.

Moreover, when it comes to her strongest suit, foreign policy, before Clinton can elaborate on her vision, she is forced to answer for her blunders.

Why did she vote for the war in Iraq? Why did she push for the war in Libya that produced this hellish mess? Does she still defend her handling of the Benghazi massacre? What happened to her “reset” with Russia?

Most critically, when facing the press, which she has begun to do after eight months of stonewalling, she is invariably dragged into the morass of the private server, the lost-and-found emails, her inability to understand or abide by State Department rules on classified and secret documents, and FBI accusations of extreme carelessness and duplicity.

Then there are the steady stream of revelations about the Clinton Foundation raking in hundreds of millions from dictators and despots who did business with Hillary Clinton’s State Department.

Bill Clinton now describes himself as a “Robin Hood” of Sherwood Forest who took from the rich to give to the poor, with Hillary Clinton presumably cast in the role of Maid Marian of Goldman Sachs.

It is all too much to absorb.

To get her “message” out, Clinton has to punch it though a media filter. But many in this ferociously competitive and diverse media market today know that the way to the front page or top of the website is to find a new angle on the plethora of scandals, minor and major, surrounding Hillary and Bill.

And with thousands of emails still out there, the contents of which are known to her adversaries, she will likely have IEDs going off beneath her campaign all the way to November.

Consider the coughing fits, a repeated distraction from her message. Should they go away, no problem. But if they recur, people will rightly demand to know from a physician what is the cause.

Because of her own blunders, Clinton’s adversaries have achieved a large measure of control over how her campaign is reported.

In a sense this is like Watergate, where, no matter that Richard Nixon might be managing well a Yom Kippur War or a strategic summit in Moscow, the press and prosecutors cared only about the tapes.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump’s message has begun to come through – loud, clear and consistent.

He will secure the border. He will renegotiate the trade deals that have been killing U.S. manufacturing and costing American jobs. He will be a law-and-order president who will put America first. He will keep us out of wars like Iraq. He will talk to Vladimir Putin, smash ISIS, back the cops and the vets, and rebuild the military.

Other than being the first woman president, what is the great change that Hillary Clinton offers America?

The Clinton campaign has a big, big problem.

    4. Clinton has led practically all of the head-to-head polls against Trump taken in Michigan, so it is not clear whether he can break through in the state. But the trend suggests that he has the potential for closing the gap — potentially putting a key Democratic state in play.

Trump, unlike other recent Republican presidential candidates, has doggedly refused to write off Michigan, despite Clinton’s earlier lead and a history of the state’s voting for every Democratic presidential candidate since 1992.

While the real estate mogul and reality TV star hasn’t spent widely on TV ads in the state, he has still outspent Clinton on air recently, and, perhaps more significant, has made four visits to the state since early August — including one Wednesday to Flint. On the national stage, he also has relied more on scripted speeches and avoided making off-the-cuff statements that, at times, have even alienated supporters.

Clinton, meanwhile, had a tougher road in August, with media reports continuing to raise questions about whether people who gave to the Clinton Foundation had special access to her while she was secretary of state.

  10. Daredevil readies for rocket launch over Snake River Canyon

By Pat Graham AP Sports Writer

(AP Photo/Chris O'Meara, File)

Given his particular line of work, professional stuntman Eddie Braun knows about danger — and he plans for the worst.

That's why he paid bills several months in advance. He set up emergency cash reserves to take care of his family and engaged in an emotional talk with his teenage son about looking out for his mom and three sisters.

Braun's simply putting things in place before he buckles into his steam-powered rocket cycle this weekend and flips the switch to launch him over the Snake River Canyon in Idaho. He's replicating the jump that could have cost his boyhood idol, Evel Knievel, his life four decades ago.

    1. "I tied up loose ends, as I would for any life-or-death type stunt coming up," said Braun, a longtime Hollywood stuntman who will launch sometime between noon Mountain time Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday, depending on wind conditions. "The last thing I want burden my family with on top of the shock of me being ...

      He took a deep breath.

"I feel very optimistic about this jump," the 54-year-old Braun continued. "I wouldn't be doing this if I thought it couldn't be done."

As a tribute to Knievel, Braun named his rocket "Evel Spirit." It's identical to the model Knievel used for his failed canyon attempt on Sept. 8, 1974, when he walked away with only minor injuries. Braun wants to prove Knievel could've made it had his parachute not prematurely deployed.

Braun's endeavor is more than three years in the making and cost him around $1.5 million out of his own pocket, with corporate sponsors hard to line up. He's drawn the interest of ABC's "Good Morning America," which will air an interview with him Friday morning. Only fitting since Knievel's launch was shown on ABC's "Wide World of Sports."

"This is about the kid Evel inspired and about the Evel spirit," said Braun, who will launch from a spot about five miles away from Knievel's site just outside of Twin Falls, Idaho.

Along for the journey are two sons yearning to fulfill the legacies of their dads: Kelly Knievel, who was present the day of the crash, and rocket designer Scott Truax, whose father constructed the original "X2 Skycycle" for Knievel. Scott followed his dad's blueprints down to the last bolt, except with one deviation — updating the parachute system.

Braun's rocket will reach a top speed of 400 mph in about 3 seconds and an altitude of 3,000 feet before the engine cuts off and the parachute deploys. Braun says he expects to soar about 1,500 feet — or 0.28 miles — over the canyon.

For the last few months, they've conducted various tests on the rocket. First and foremost, a static fire test in which they welded the rocket to the ground to make sure it was generating the kind of power they needed to soar so far.

"Passed with flying colors," Braun said.

The parachute test was a different story.

      "Shredded it," Braun recounted.

They feel they've addressed the issues. But it's a guess.

"We just don't know," Braun said. "We know what Evel's problem was — his parachute coming out early. What we don't want with mine is it coming out too late. Therein lies the secret — what is that magic formula?

"Because up to the point of me climbing in it, there's no real test that can be done."

    Yet another liberal got mugged...literally

    By Robert Arvay

For the sake of humor, I often email my friends with a news report followed by a parody of it.

Sometimes it is difficult, however, for readers to accept that the real news item is not itself the actual parody. Here is an example.

According to a report at Fox News, a college student "active in the local Black Lives Matter movement is suddenly all for police patrols in his neighborhood — after he was robbed at gunpoint outside his apartment."

This reminds us of the decades-old truism that a conservative is a liberal who has been mugged. In this case, the mugging was literal. While it is doubtful that the student has now become a Second Amendment right-wing "deplorable" conservative, it is entirely possible that he has finally taken the first baby step toward acknowledging reality – at least that tiny part of it encompassing the fact that policemen are not, it turns out, "hunting down young black men like dogs and murdering them in the street." That is an inexact quote, but close. For another quote, an exact one, see here among others.

The student in the real news, Jerry Ford, Jr., has apparently been living in a bubble up until now, by which I mean he has happily never before been subjected to the grim reality behind the political rhetoric and hopefully never again will be mugged. It must be a horrible experience. To be accosted by a stranger who is clearly posing the credible threat of murder, and then to be deprived of one's valuables, must be a nightmare-inducing trauma.

Another sad part of this is that Ford has seemingly been oblivious, up until now, that for many thousands of American residents, especially those leading "black lives" (that is to say, their own lives), the imminent threat of sudden, deadly violence, but not from policemen, is a constant daily factor. Many people live in such fear of their neighborhood criminals that they carefully schedule their trips to the corner store to avoid the most dangerous hours. In many neighborhoods, even choosing which colors to wear can be a life-or-death decision.

To some extent, the commonsense remedies for this ongoing atrocity are hampered by the myths perpetrated by the Black Lives Matter organization and similar groups. They have made it politically incorrect to so much as mention the term "black-on-black violence." They refer to such terms as racist. To point out that vast numbers of young black men grow up, never having known their fathers – to point that out is offensive. Yet therein lies a major part of the problem. Would I be politically offensive to estimate, without knowing the specifics, that the man who mugged Ford is a young black male raised by a single mother? Would I be offending Ford to suggest that such young men are a vastly greater threat to his life than nearly any policeman in the country? Is that why he is calling for a police presence in his neighborhood?

Hopefully, Jerry Ford will reconsider his racialist views. If not, then he will become a parody of himself.

“Criminal attacks New York cops with a MEAT CLEAVER before being shot and critically wounded: Suspect attacked ‘because his car was booted when he parked in the middle of Manhattan street,'” by James Wilkinson, Dailymail.com, September 15, 2016:

The Queens man who allegedly hit an off-duty NYPD detective in the head with an 11-inch meat cleaver during a dramatic Midtown Manhattan confrontation has been identified as Akram Joudeh, 32.

Joudeh was shot multiple times on West 32 Street, near Penn Station, by several officers at around 5pm Wednesday after a dramatic chase that culminated in three officers being injured, cops said.

The detective suffered a six-inch gash from his temple to his jaw, while Joudeh was left in hospital in critical but stable condition.

Police were called out at around 5pm after Joudeh was seen trying to prize a boot off his car on West 31 St and Broadway.

He is believed to have been sleeping in the vehicle, which had reportedly been parked in the middle of the street, which is located in a busy, tourist-heavy area of Midtown.

When police approached, however, he pulled out the cleaver and fled while ‘waving it around,’ a police spokesman said.

A sergeant attempted to stop the suspect with a taser while they ran through the crowded area, but for reasons unknown it apparently had no effect.

The officers chased him through the heavily-patrolled area to West 32 St, near Penn Station, where he mounted the grill of a stationary police car.

An off-duty detective, who was heading to Penn Station, saw Joudeh and attempted to tackle him – at which point, cops say, Joudeh hit him in the face with the cleaver.

Officers tried to talk him into dropping the weapon, police said, but he refused – at which point they fired 18 times, hitting him with multiple bullets, cops said.

Two other cops sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

Early reports said that one of them suffered a graze on his back during the gunfire.

Both the cops and the attacker were taken to Bellevue Hospital. The detective is said to be in serious condition. The other officers are said to be in stable condition…..

    1. A plurality (46%) of voters believes the media is giving too much coverage to Clinton’s health issues. Twenty-eight percent (28%) say there’s not enough coverage, while 21% rate the level of coverage as about right.

Not surprisingly, 63% of Democrats think there is too much coverage of Clinton’s health problems, a view shared by only 35% of Republicans and 39% of voters not affiliated with either major political party.

Voters strongly agree that a candidate’s health is an important voting issue, but while most Republicans and unaffiliated voters think the state of Clinton’s health is worth exploring, the majority of Democrats disagree.

  23. Common Sense from The Atlantic:

How Bernie Sanders Die-Hards Echo Clinton Conspiracy Theories
It’s not just conservatives pushing the idea that the Democratic nominee is sicker than she admits.

Some conservatives are hard at work spreading conspiracy theories about Hillary Clinton’s health in an attempt to disqualify her from seeking higher office. Video footage of the Democratic nominee stumbling as she abruptly departed a 9/11 memorial on Sunday, combined with news that she had contracted pneumonia, has fueled rumors on the right that Clinton may be concealing a far worse medical condition. But it’s not just conservatives indulging in wild speculation. At least some die-hard supporters of Bernie Sanders are echoing, and in some cases amplifying, unproven claims that Clinton may be covering up serious health problems.

For a contingent of Sanders supporters who remain convinced the primary was rigged and distrust the media and the Democratic establishment, it isn’t much of a leap to believe Clinton has been dishonest about her health.

Concerns over the Clinton campaign’s transparency are understandable, but that doesn't justify unfounded speculation from political opponents on either the left or the right.

It’s important to distinguish between real medical problems and health conspiracy theories.

That alone won’t be enough to stop unproven claims about Clinton’s health from taking hold across the political spectrum, but it could at the very least help relegate conspiracy theories to the fringes of political debate.

  24. The Race for President is (Probably) Over

If you are following breaking news, Hillary Clinton abruptly left the 9-11 memorial today because she was reportedly “overheated.” Her campaign says she is fine now.

You probably wonder if the “overheated” explanation is true – and a non-issue as reported – or an indication of a larger medical condition. I’m blogging to tell you it doesn’t matter. The result is the same.
    Here’s why.

If humans were rational creatures, the time and place of Clinton’s “overheating” wouldn’t matter at all. But when it comes to American psychology, there is no more powerful symbol of terrorism and fear than 9-11 . When a would-be Commander-in-Chief withers – literally – in front of our most emotional reminder of an attack on the homeland, we feel unsafe. And safety is our first priority.

    Hillary Clinton just became unelectable.

The mainstream media might not interpret today’s events as a big deal. After all, it was only a little episode of overheating. And they will continue covering the play-by-play action until election day.
But unless Trump actually does shoot someone on 5th Avenue, he’s running unopposed.

I have blogged and tweeted that Hillary Clinton looks unhealthy to me. And I have mentioned on Twitter that one of the skills of a hypnotist is identifying subtle bodily changes. Observation is a huge part of a hypnotist’s skill. You look for micro changes in muscle tone, breathing, posture, and anything else that can tell you whether your technique is working or you need to quickly pivot to a new approach. Think of it as rapid A-B testing on humans. And like any skill, one gets better with practice. I have more than three decades of practice for this specific skill.

What I see in Clinton’s health is an unusual level of variability. Sometimes her eyes bug out, sometimes they are tired and baggy. Sometimes she looks puffy, sometimes not. It would be easy to assume fatigue is the important variable. And that is clearly a big factor. But notice that the other candidates have little variability in their physicality. Trump always looks like Trump. Cruz always looks like Cruz, and so on. Sometimes we think we can detect fatigue in their answers, but visually the other candidates appear about the same every day.

Clinton, on the other hand, looks like an entirely different person every few days. That suggests some greater variability in her health. And that’s probably a tell for medications that are waxing and waning but rarely at the ideal levels. Or perhaps the underlying conditions have normal variability. Or both.

Under normal circumstances it would be deeply irresponsible for a cartoonist to give a medical diagnosis to a stranger he hasn’t met. I trust you to ignore my medical opinions. I do this to build a record of my persuasion-related predictions and to show you the method.

I give Clinton a 50% chance of making it to November with sufficiently good health to be considered a viable president. Judging from her performance on the campaign trail, she is managing her health effectively to get the job done. But I would think most people who run for president end up sacrificing their health in some measure. The big question is how much buffer she has left.

"Q"Nit of the Day: NYC Moslem Attacks Police With Meat Cleaver

I went back and actually read the article.

There is zip in it proving the guy a Muslim much less a jihadi.

As for him being a jihadist or an Islamist, from the sounds of it this is not the kind of guy who prays to Mecca 5 times a day. In fact, since he sounds homeless he would have to spread his rug on the sidewalk to pray. In fact, he sounds as if even if he was heading East on 56th Street, he wouldn't know which way to face to find Mecca.

And is this a new crime 'carrying a knife near a synagogue'?

And I love the comments. I can see why YOU read this thing.

What's wrong with you, old man?

      It's a good video, Ash.

      It makes sense in theory.

A couple things I see that may slow down the recovery all center around productivity.

      1. Interest payments are becoming a bigger and bigger bite from discretionary spending in the budget. In the not too distant future it will surpass military spending in the budget.

      2. Military spending keeps going up. Military spending produces jobs butter any assets produced aren't productive. You can't use them to produce other goods and services.

      3. I recently read this article on productivity...

The Rise and Fall of American Growth: The US Standard of Living Since the Civil War

...The message of Rise and Fall is this. For most of human history, economic progress moved at a crawl. According to the economic historian Bradford DeLong, from the first rock tools used by humanoids three million years ago, to the earliest cities ten thousand years ago, through the Middle Ages, to the beginning of the Industrial Revolution around 1800, living standards doubled (with a growth of 0.00002 percent per year). Another doubling took place over the subsequent period to 1870. Then, according to standard calculations, the world economy took off.

Gordon focuses on growth in the United States. Living standards, as measured by GDP per capita or real wages, accelerated after 1870. The growth rate looks like an inverted U. Productivity growth rose from the late nineteenth century and peaked in the 1950s, but has slowed to a crawl since 1970. In designating 1870–1970 as the special century, Gordon emphasizes that the period since 1970 has been less special. He argues that the pace of innovation has slowed since 1970 (a point that will surprise many people), and furthermore that the gains from technological improvement have been shared less broadly (a point that is widely appreciated and true).

A central aspect of Gordon’s thesis is that the conventional measures of economic growth omit some of the largest gains in living standards and therefore underestimate economic progress. A point that is little appreciated is that the standard measures of economic progress do not include gains in health and life expectancy. Nor do they include the impact of revolutionary technological improvements such as the introduction of electricity or telephones or automobiles...

We tend to believe productivity will continue to rise at the rates we have seen over our lifetime. Maybe that's not necessarily true.

[The book review is kind of long but it's pretty good if you are interested in that stuff.]

Donald Trump unveiled a new visual campaign theme in Miami on Friday Рa mashup of the Broadway musical 'Les Mis̩rables' and an epithet Hillary Clinton leveled at his supporters one week ago.

He took the stage, introduced by former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, as the 'Les Mis' anthem 'Do You Hear the People Sing' blasted through loudspeakers.

The video screen behind the podium flashed to an artistic rendering of 'Les Deplorables' – pilfered from Reddit – complete with USA and 'Trump' flags replacing the French colors, and a bald eagle soaring over the revolutionary scene.

'Welcome to all of you deplorables!' Trump boomed as thousands screamed 'Trump! Trump! Trump!' and 'We love you!'.....

For now, anyway. A month ago, analysts thought Hillary Clinton had enough of a lead in the Electoral College that she could coast to the finish line. She’s coasted ever since, and that has finally caught up to her — and so has Donald Trump. Politico polling analyst Stephen Shepard writes that current polling would give Trump 266 electoral votes, with any number of states available to give him the majority:....
