COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

"Do we need another Perot?"

Too Bad this Guy Was Captured and Taken by the Crew Seen on This Field in Upper Wisconsin. The Same Ship Was Later Observed Transporting Perot From Texarcana.

Really now, what an inspiring crew we have in Congress. Now I realize that this is not going to be a presidential election. You cannot spin it as a referendum on Bush ( the press will) because the American system of electing politicians is all done on the most local level. There will be no national ballot. Most Americans cannot name their Congressional Representative. They do however, know whether they like or dislike the Republicans or Democrats. The Republic Leadership in Congress is an oxymoron, with heavy emphasis on the last syllable. A little more ox and a little less moron would be helpful, and no party in the last fifteen years deserves to lose more than the Republicans. The problem is for them to lose, the Democrats must win. As Henry Kissinger once sort of said about the Iraqi and Iranian War, "Too bad they both can't lose."

The Washington Times wants Speaker Hastert to resign. Ho Hum, or as my partner here at the Elephant, Whit, would say....."the beat goes on."

ps. "deuce to whit, come in please."

  1. This is the way the Democrats are going to play this. From The Huffington Post ..." Matt Drudge takes all of this to a deeper, darker place, and perhaps it's logical conclusion. Matt Drudge, like the Republican leadership and the Fox News commentators, is so single minded and addicted to power that he's willing to blame the children themselves..."

They are portraying 16 and 17 year olds as children. What nonsense. The age of responsibility keeps ratcheting up, but 16 and 17 year olds are not children. No older man can come onto a 16 year old straight male without a green flag. The Democrats can't go to the protected gay area. They do what they do best and define it into victim-hood. And no one des victim-hood better than the Democrats. Use plain English and state it as it is, a homosexual relationship between a congressional creep and a shameless flirt.

  2. This Foley thing cannot be laid at the Dems doorway. If Mr Hastert and his crew did not realize the noise levels that would be generated by this type of behaviour becoming Public knowledge, well he should step aside.
His Leadership has, in general, been dismal, to say the least.
buddy's link to yesterday's WSJ Editorial said more than enough about the Repubs lack of success or fiscal responsibility.

  3. "... Others warned that the impact could be much greater. Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council and an important social conservative leader, said "there's a real chance" that the episode could dethrone the Republican majority. "I think the next 48 hours are critical in how this is handled," he said, adding that "when a party holds itself out as the guardian of values, this is not helpful." ..."

  4. "... David Bossie, who runs a group called Citizens United, called yesterday for Hastert's resignation and said other conservative leaders are likely to follow suit. Bossie said the initial e-mails alone, which included Foley's request of a minor's picture, should have prompted an immediate inquiry. "That was a cry for an investigation," Bossie said. "Why couldn't the speaker of the House muster the will to stop this?"

Leaders from about six dozen socially conservative groups held a conference call late yesterday afternoon, and participants were described as livid with House GOP leaders.

"They are outraged by how Hastert handled this," said Paul M. Weyrich, a conservative activist who participated in the call. "They feel let down, left aside. How can they allow a guy like [Foley] to remain chairman of the committee on missing and exploited children when there is any question about e-mails?"

Vin Weber, a GOP lobbyist close to the White House and to congressional leaders, said many Republicans outside of Washington are echoing Bossie.

"From what I hear, it is resonating badly and our candidates are on the defensive about this," Weber said. "The maddening thing about this is if they had done the right thing" by informing Democrats early on and investigating it fully, "there would be no political fallout," he said." ..."
