COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  2. Suspected Russia propagandists on Facebook tried to organize more than a dozen pro-Trump rallies in Florida during last year’s election, The Daily Beast has learned.
The demonstrations—at least one of which was promoted online by local pro-Trump activists— brought dozens of supporters together in real life. They appear to be the first case of Russian provocateurs successfully mobilizing Americans over Facebook in direct support of Donald Trump.

Goodbye Paul, we hardly knew yah ...

    1. The Being Patriotic Facebook page was closed in August 2017—right when Facebook purged accounts secretly operated by a notorious St. Petersburg troll factory called Internet Research Agency. According to a public report by U.S. intelligence agencies (PDF), Internet Research Agency is financed by “a close Putin ally with ties to Russian intelligence.” Being Patriotic’s posts included scores of pro-Trump or anti-Clinton memes framed and watermarked in the same style as those found on the Heart of Texas and Secured Borders Facebook pages previously identified as Russian operations.

    2. the fraudulent activity on Facebook did indeed involve messaging on behalf of Trump, did prompt at least some Americans to rally on Trump’s behalf, and did result in the Trump campaign volunteers subsequently sharing material from those events.
The pro-Trump events represent “the next level” of suspected Russian influence operations, said Clint Watts, a former FBI agent who has testified about those operations to a Senate committee investigating them.
“This would be a direct effort that they attempted that’s more than online promotion,” Watts told The Daily Beast. “‘Let’s organize and try to get people to move to events in a proactive way around a candidate. Again, if it traces back to Russia, you can’t deny that’s foreign influence in an election.”

    3. Wiles also said that the Trump campaign’s purported Broward County Facebook page, which markets itself as being “official,” was not set up by the campaign.

“The Donald Trump campaign did not set these Facebook pages up,” she told The Daily Beast. “Rather, supporters (like the lady registered as the contact) set them up to support the campaign and subsequently the president.”

The “lady” registered as the contact is Dolly Trevino Rump, the Trump campaign’s chairwoman for Broward County who, until this April, was also the secretary of the local Republican Party.

The Miami Herald described her as “perhaps Broward’s most famous Donald Trump fan.”

Rump did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast. Neither did the chairman of the Broward County Republican Party.

Some members of the Trump campaign were deeply involved with Russians, others were merely manipulated by Russian operatives

  3. While with the US position on Iran ...

While Mr. Trump and his United Nations ambassador, Nikki R. Haley, have assailed Iran, they have presented nothing concrete that suggests the Iranians are violating the agreement.

Rather, they have objected to provisions that will expire after a number of years, called for more intrusive inspections even if there is no evidence of wrongdoing and say restrictions on Iran’s missiles should be part of the agreement.

For Mr. Rouhani, who described Mr. Trump’s depiction of Iran as an insult that warranted an apology, there was ample opportunity to present his side of the story on Wednesday, in his speech and at a news conference.

It was in many ways the diametrical opposite of Mr. Trump’s version. Iran is not meddling in the Middle East, he said, it is helping neighbors who ask for help. Iran is not sponsoring terrorism, he said, but fighting it. Iran’s missiles are not meant to attack but to defend.

    1. Mr. Rouhani said the nuclear agreement, which was negotiated not just with the United States but five other major powers — Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia — was a model of international diplomacy that should be emulated, not abandoned.

“I declare before you that the Islamic Republic of Iran will not be the first country to violate the agreement; but it will respond decisively and resolutely to its violation by any party,” he said.

    1. Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea.

"I am against threats of this kind. And speaking for myself and the government I must say that we consider any type of military solution absolutely inappropriate and we are counting on diplomatic efforts," Merkel said in an interview with DW.

"This must be vigorously implemented. In my opinion, sanctions and enforcing these sanctions are the right answer. But anything else with regard to North Korea I think is wrong. And that is why we clearly disagree with the US president."

    3. Allies are apoplectic. After a lengthy closed-door meeting on the matter, EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini ran out of patience. Asked if the U.S. was committed to the deal, she replied: “another question.”

Even worse for Trump, the accord is being touted as a recipe for success, with France suggesting it could be a template for dealing with North Korea’s weapons program.

Rather than leaving Iran out in the cold, Trump is the one now looking isolated.

    5. .

      Hopefully, none.

Also, hopefully, this is simply another example of Trump's unseemly blustering as a 'negotiating tactic' and in the end he will manufacture some reason for certifying Iran's compliance with the accord.

'Spirit of the Accord' is unlikely to prevail as a legal argument. It's a diplomatic euphemism used to disguise the fact that they weren't able to get every thing they wanted in the original deal.

The accord is a good deal although it certainly doesn't give us everything we would like. If Trump were to pull out of the deal, it would simply be another example his obstinate willingness to give up the good in pursuit of the perfect.

      .

The whole fraudulent deal has no legal basis whatsoever.

It wasn't voted on by the Senate.

      Don't be stupid, Bob.

It's simple. The deal wasn't a treaty and thus didn't need Senate approval. We have a long history of calling these things anything we want in order to get them done. Hell, if we went by the intent of the Constitution, we wouldn't have been half the wars were in in the last few decades. Get over it.

      .

Besides the deal is shot through with absurdities. Their military bases are off limits. If we want to inspect the few places we can inspect we have to give, what was it, something like 30 days of notice, or more.

Iranian engineers have been in N Korea for years. Iran probably already has nuclear weapons.

Their own centrifuges are still turning, too.

Bull, you haven't a clue. Lying is second nature to politicians; yet, you mouth the talking points coming out of these morons, right-wing hacks like Bolton, ideologue neocons like Graham and McCain, and leaders who would say anything no matter how inane like Netanyahu and Trump if they thought it would play well amongst their simpleminded base.

What we've allowed them to do is develop missile delivery systems.

This has nothing to do with the agreement we signed. Nuclear weapons systems development is addressed in the NPT. Delivery systems are not. If we need an agreement on this negotiate it with Iran. However, rather than negotiate Trump and his minions would rather grouse and piss and moan and possibly negate the agreement leaving us much worse off than before. We would be giving up a lot and getting nothing in return all because of some childish pique.

Let's see, our allies, our co-sponsors on the agreement, the UN, our military, the Israeli military, all seem to agree that the Iranian nuclear agreement is a good thing net/net. On the other side, you have a bunch of politicians and their simpleminded minions. Gee, that's a toughy.

Facebook announced on Thursday that it has turned over to Congress tens of thousands of ads from the social network believed to be linked to Russia‘s attempts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election, a reversal from its previous stance.

  16. A Dizzying Week of Trump-Russia Revelations

    By Ryan Lizza

We know the Russians launched a cyber campaign to help Trump win. We know that the Trump campaign was willing to entertain assistance from the Russian government because Manafort, Jared Kushner, and Donald Trump, Jr., eagerly met with a Russian offering such assistance.

This latest news suggests—though the reporting is still vague—what many have long wondered: that Manafort may have been a crucial link between the Trump campaign and Russians seeking to defeat Hillary Clinton. If Mueller or congressional investigators unearth proof that Manafort colluded with the Russians, it will fortify the narrative that the Trump campaign worked with a foreign nation to alter the outcome of an American Presidential election—an unprecedented event in the country’s history.

Trump could dismiss the evidence, deny knowledge of the collusion, and dismiss the Mueller investigation as a “witch hunt.” But this week’s disclosures moved the theorizing about Trump-Russia one step closer to a politically devastating blow to Trump’s Presidency.
