WAPO’s Fake Story on Hacking Electrical Grid

Single Laptop Had Malware, Post Declared US Electrical Grid at Risk

ANTIWAR

“Russian operation hacked a Vermont utility, showing risk to U.S. electrical grid security, officials say.” That was the headline at the Washington Post for a story which in reality did not involve hacking a utility, risking a grid, or even really Russians, above and beyond the nominal attribution of any malware to Russia these days.

The story stems from a report last night that a single laptop, owned by the Burlington, Vermont power company but not connected to anything, had become infected with malware sort of similar to what targeted the Democrats during the 2016 election campaign. And since we’re blaming Russia for that, we’re blaming Russia for this, by God.

But the laptop wasn’t critical infrastructure, wasn’t connected to anything in the grid, and there’s no evidence the malware did anything to it anyhow. Even putting aside the tenuous Russia link, officials like the Vermont Public Service Commissioner were quick to point out that the grid was not in danger in any way.

The Washington Post, however, hunted for a story, and got Vermont’s Governor Peter Shumlin to condemn Putin as “one of the world’s leading thugs,” and accused him of “attempting to hack our electric grid.” Shumlin and other top Vermont Democrats were only too willing to issue statements based on the Washington Post’s allegations, and the Washington Post was only too willing to keep the echo chamber going.

In the end, the Washington Post kept the false story up, but added an Editor’s Note admitting that there was no indication the grid was penetrated, and noting that the computer was not attached to the grid. The note was added way at the bottom of the long, hysterical story.

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Vermont U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy says the discovery of a malware code used by Russian hackers on a Vermont utility’s laptop is the latest example that state-sponsored Russian hacking is a serious threat.

The Burlington Electric Department said Friday it detected the malware in a laptop not connected to its grid systems. It says it took immediate action to isolate the laptop and alerted federal
    officials.

Leahy, a Democrat, says he and his staff were briefed by Vermont State Police on Friday night. He says the incident goes “beyond hackers having electronic joy rides” and that trying to potentially manipulate the electric grid and shut it down is a direct threat to Vermont.

Russia also has been accused of interfering in the U.S. presidential election. It has denied hacking U.S. systems.

  8. Gunmen have attacked a night club in Istanbul, reportedly injuring scores of people, Turkish channel NTV reports. Footage shows armored police vehicles surrounding the building as ambulances are rushed to the scene.

The attack took place at the well-known Reina nightclub in the Ortakoy neighborhood, in Istanbul’s Besiktas district.

There were two attackers involved, according to NTV, but conflicting reports also described a lone gunman.

The gunmen were dressed in Santa Claus outfits, wielding “long barrel guns,” Turkish media said.

The attackers opened fire on clubgoers, injuring many of them. One of the gunmen has reportedly hidden inside the club, while the whereabouts of the second one were not immediately clear.

Emergency crews have been evacuating injured people from the building as police search the area.

Some of the comment is obvious or can be assumed but at this point the assumptions at the beginning and end are questionable.

At this point, as far as I've seen, we don't know who committed the crime in Turkey. They haven't caught the perp yet and no one has claimed responsibility. It seems a little early to assign blame. There are a number of groups that could have done it, ISIS or some other terrorist group, the Kurds, even the Turkish opposition in order to destabilize and attack the Erdogan regime.

Also, IMO, to blame Obama for this attack given what we know seems instinctual rather than intellectual. Turkey has been fighting the PKK for 50 years. This wouldn't be their first go round. The opposition in Turkey certainly has a reason for causing havoc under Erdogan given his widespread crackdown after the coup attempt. As for ISIS (or any other terrorist group) blaming that on Obama is IMO silly for reasons discussed before. There is nothing to suggest that getting the US involved in Syria or not doing it would have made a difference regarding the shootings in Turkey. Turkey would have been involved in Syria regardless perhaps more so than now. Even if ISIS had been degraded much more than it is today that is no guarantee the attack in Turkey wouldn't have happened. Terrorism is what happens when relatively weak groups battle superior powers. It's been that way for thousands of years.

Any party that works with us and Russia?

Perhaps, your business interests are affecting your views, but to me it seems a little early to be considering Putin the good guy.

Friends can often be more dangerous than foes.

Russia has border interests. Russia has been attacked from European powers from the Vikings and forward. Of. course they will be concerned at potential hostile powers creating problems for them on their borders. Was that not the basis for our 60 years of loathing and fear from Cuba, an island 90 miles from our shores?

The Cold War was all about a cordon sanitaire. When the Eastern buffer states reorientated west, we foolishly talked out of both sides of our mouth about Russia.

In the long game, we need Russia and they need us. They can remain political competitors but there is no gain in falsely regarding them as enemies. It is bad politics and bad business.

Russian paranoia has been justified by events in the 20th Century. However, that same paranoia has been a factor in the Russian character for centuries and the measures they have taken to surround themselves with buffer states because of that paranoia have resulted in pain to many peoples, pain that might be rationalized but can't be justified.

Any party that works with us and Russia?

Interests may align now and then but it is early times to be considering Russia as part of my team.

Putin is no dummy. However, IMO, Putin views the world as a zero sum game. You seem to have faith in Trump. I am more skeptical. In time, we shall see whether Trump is a hero or Putin's poodle.

People use it all the time to describe disagreements or antipathy either major or minor all the way down to 'hating' brown M&M's. Actual hate IMO requires up close and personal interaction. I disagree with a lot of people but I can't think of anyone I hate.

VENEZUELA MILITARY TRAFFICKING FOOD AS COUNTRY GOES HUNGRY
BY HANNAH DREIER AND JOSHUA GOODMAN
    ASSOCIATED PRESS

    AP Photo
    AP Photo/Ariana Cubillos

PUERTO CABELLO, Venezuela (AP) -- When hunger drew tens of thousands of Venezuelans to the streets in protest last summer, President Nicolas Maduro turned to the military to manage the country's diminished food supply, putting generals in charge of everything from butter to rice.

But instead of fighting hunger, the military is making money from it, an Associated Press investigation shows. That's what grocer Jose Campos found when he ran out of pantry staples this year. In the middle of the night, he would travel to an illegal market run by the military to buy pallets of corn flour - at 100 times the government-set price.

"The military would be watching over whole bags of money," Campos said. "They always had what I needed."

With much of the country on the verge of starvation and billions of dollars at stake, food trafficking has become one of the biggest businesses in Venezuela, the AP found. And from generals to foot soldiers, the military is at the heart of the graft, according to documents and interviews with more than 60 officials, business owners and workers, including five former generals.

As a result, food is not reaching those who most need it.

The U.S. government has taken notice. Prosecutors have opened investigations against senior Venezuelan officials, including members of the military, for laundering riches from food contracts through the U.S. financial system, according to four people with direct knowledge of the probes. No charges have been brought.

"Lately, food is a better business than drugs," said retired Gen. Cliver Alcala, who helped oversee Venezuela's border security. "The military is in charge of food management now, and they're not going to just take that on without getting their cut."

    "WHAT'S THE PROBLEM?"

After opposition attempts to overthrow him, the late President Hugo Chavez began handing the military control over the food industry, creating a Food Ministry in 2004. His socialist-run government nationalized farms and food processing plants, then neglected them, and domestic production dried up. Oil-exporting Venezuela became dependent on food imports, but when the price of oil collapsed in 2014, the government no longer could afford all the country needed.

Food rationing grew so severe that Venezuelans spent all day waiting in lines....

The words of an English major. That should tell you everything you need to know.

Vapid and inane are often considered synonyms but they have different meanings, meanings that can be used to convey specificity. As an adjective, vapid means lifeless or dull. Inane means lacking sense or meaning. As a noun inane means that which is void or empty. That was the meaning I was trying to convey.

However, I can see where an English major might consider one word as good as another and that short words are always better.

IMO, Bibi has no redeeming qualities.

He is a liar, a manipulator, and an ingrate. A politician willing to do whatever it takes to hold onto power. (And, possibly, a criminal if you can believe the AG in Israel.)

If Trump wants to know who he is dealing with all he has to do is watch this…

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7dw89jICTU --- Bibi talking in Ofra, 2001

In his own words, Bibi explains how easily he can manipulate, 'move' America his way, and how he torpedoed the Oslo Accords. That’s what I call chutzpah. But the settlers seemed to eat it up.

You can’t believe a word the man says.

    Nonsense.

    But the issue is simple.

Jews have a right to Jerusalem as their capital.

Biblical? Sure, dismiss this and dismiss all Moslem and Christian claims as well.

Historic? Sure, dismiss this and dismiss all Moslem and Christian claims as well.

Possession is 9/10ths of the law?

Israel, having liberated/conquered the lands in a defensive war and now control said lands?

    Owns them.

    Kerry's speech was nonsense.

    1. No it was not nonsense. He outlined the options very succinctly:

      2 states or 1 state?

If 1 state then Israel needs to grant all residents citizenship- goodbye Jewish State.

      Therefore 2 states.

If States then settlements are an antithetical to that outcome with compromises required on all other issues including Jerusalem.

WiO joins the EB Greek chorus.

He puts up my entire post. It was simply a post about Bibi, his character, his views of the US and its citizens, his duplicity and his lying.

Then after reposting my post, WiO proceeds to ignore it entirely instead claiming all of the West Bank for Israel. Evidently, he doesn't realize the two issues have zip to do with each other.

      As I said, inane.

  36. I saw reason to support Trump today:

They were talking on TV about tax reform including a national sales tax. Good stuff! I've read Brian Mulroney (father of Canadian National sales tax) has Trumps ear.

Unfortunately, on this issue anyway, Trump is dealing with a civil war on the GOP side and, given the stupid rabid partisan nature of US politics, it is unlikely he'll get Dems to split to his side.

    Very sad!

In the absence of mitigating rules and provision, a sales tax is more regressive than an income tax. Is that what we want given that most would argue that the current growing wealth disparity is a problem?

Proponents of sales taxes argue they are simpler and can be used to simplify a tax code everyone agrees is unfair. However, when you start adding in provisions to remove the regressivity of the sales tax, aren't you quickly walking down the same road you have right now which would be paradise for lobbyists, lawyers, and tax preparers?

      Tax anything that moves.

Then at the end of life, add on a 'death tax', and you've covered the entire waterfront.

All this is called 'fairness' or 'paying your fair share'.

The only way out is to cheat like hell, or go on welfare.

So, it's a miserable life no matter from which perspective you view it.
