COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Does Glenn Beck have something here?

Alexander Higgins

Libyan officials, US officials and intelligence assets on the ground say the Benghazi embassy attack was planned by Al Qaeda affiliated Islamic extremists.
Libya officials also say that the U.S warned in advanced but failed to take necessary measures to prevent the attack that took the lives of 4 Americans including that of US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stephens.
An investigation by The Examiner's Alexander Higgins reveals further reveals that Libya extremists conducted nearly monthly attacks against diplomatic facilities and convoys prior to the 9/11 attack.
These are the latest details contradicting the US government's claim the attack on the Benghazi Embassy in Libya was spontaneous outrage over an anti-Muslim film that caught the administration off-guard.

Several foreign policy experts have offered explanations on why the administration would be attempting to spin the narrative.
Explanations offered ranged from limiting political damage for backing the Libya extremists to overthrow Gaddafi to an attempt to hide the administration's gross negligence in failing protect the consulate despite clear warnings prior to the attack.
As Canada's Sun News details the video embedded on this page the US was given clear specific warnings Al Qaeda publicly urged followers to attack embassies in both Libya and Egypt.
On September 10th Al Qaeda issued a warning they would attack the US embassy in Cairo and "burn it to the ground" if the blind Sheik was not released from prison.
In Libya Al Qaeda urged followers to attack the consulate in Benghazi for revenge of a US assassination drone strike.
Official diplomatic cables echoed the warnings of potential attack in Cairo and CNN reported on the attack warning.
Despite those warnings much of the corporate media's attention has focused on whether the Obama administration was warned of the possibility of an attack in the 48 to 72 hours prior to the assassination of the US Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens.
Several top-level officials in the U.S. government and the Libyan government have stated that certainly is the case.
Libyan security officials tell the Independent the U.S. was warned three days prior to the attack.
The Independent cited top-level U.S. diplomatic sources in a prior report who revealed the US was warned 48 hours in advance.
Those sources said an alert was issued by the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security but was never made public.
The February 17th Brigade, the armed militia group in control of Benghazi security, told CNN that US diplomats were separately warned of the "rapidly deteriorating security" situation in a meeting three days before the attack.
Nearly monthly attacks on Libya diplomatic facilities ignored
Not only did the Obama administration fail to act on specific warnings of a potential attack but there also was a failure to harden security at diplomatic facilities in Libya.
Security alerts issued by the US Libya embassy to American travelers prior to the 9/11 attack that took the lives of 4 Americans, including that of US ambassador Chris Stevens, reveal diplomatic facilities were being attacked on a nearly monthly basis.
The previous attacks against US diplomatic facilities included rocket-propelled grenades and improvised explosive devices in attacks on diplomatic facilities.
Additionally there have also been attacks on diplomatic convoys, including an attack on a UN convoy in February, a UK convoy in June and a US convoy in Tripoli in August.
Each of these security alerts warn that protests in Libya in the past have often escalated into violence and attack against government buildings.
The nearly monthly occurrence of these attacks suggest severe gross negligence on behalf of the Obama administration.
There was clear failure to take the necessary steps to harden the Benghazi consulate from the same attacks that targeted it the past and provide the security needed to protect American lives.
Instead, just two weeks prior to the attack the consular section of the Benghazi office was opened to the public.
Libya officials say attacks were planned
Libyan security officials have arrested several people and identified at least 50 more who played a role in the attack.
According to the Libyan officials and investigators familiar with the attack on the Benghazi compound the evidence indicates the attacks was planned by foreign Islamic extremists considered to be affiliates and sympathizers of Al Qaeda .
The way these perpetrators acted and moved, and their choosing a specific date for this so-called demonstration, I think that this leaves us with no doubt that this was pre-planned, pre-determined,”, says Libyan parliament chief Mohammad Magarief told McClatchy papers.
Magarief further explained that the raid as “definitely” planned and were not the result of the spontaneous storming of the consulate as claimed by the Obama administration.
Magarief states he also believes that the assaults were planned by foreign Islamic extremists he considers to be “affiliates and sympathizers”of al-Qaeda.

  2. Sorry; I tried. Maybe tomorrow. :)

    g'nite.

p.s. That guy, Stevens, reminds me, a little bit, of some of those guys that mess around with poisonous snakes. After awhile, they lose track of the fact that those are snakes, and start dreaming up strange delusions where the crawly things become their "friends."

This usually ends with a bad case of "snakebite," and occasionally death.

Certain personality types tend to "go native" in war zones. Some of us get lucky and survive. Others don't. Chris Stevens didn't.

    Just my take on it.

Who is responsible for security at US Embassies?

    The Chain of Responsibility

    State Department Security

The critics of this administration will continue to criticise. The administration will continue to deny. The question asked of John McCain in the second video is a key one. Will anyone in America care? My answer? No, at least not enough to make any kind of difference. Sure, you'll get the feined outrage and accusations for a day or two but in the end Obama's opponents will continue to accuse him while his supporters continue to excuse him. Within a week it will have blown over and people will be saying, "Chris Stevens? Where did I hear that name?" As Dylan says at the end of Black Diamond Bay, "Seems like every time you turn around there's another hard-luck story that you're gonna hear."

My take. One more clusterfuck. Nothing new here. Move along.

The stories continue to keep coming in and they seem to paint a picture of incompetance or neglect, early warnings ignored and reasonable security steps not taken. It's easy to say the host country is responsible but Libya and Egypt are not Switzerland or the Vatican. We have been watching the growing unrest for the past month. We know the current Libyan government is weak and has to sublet governnace of many parts of the country to various tribes and paramilitary groups. To pin your security entirely on the government there is gross negligence.

You can't station a company of marines at every US embassy but so far it appears no steps were taken to heighten security despite the warnings. It's easy to blame Stevens as being a cowboy who failed to heed the recommendations of his DSO. However, that is all speculation. And even if true, who appointed Stevens to Libya? He was not the only one in the Embassy. What about the other Americans, diplomats and military? Who has the ultimate responsibility to protect their lives? My take is that it's the responsibility of the honchos at State that either made poor decisions initially or failed to head warnings, either through policy decisions or neglect.

I wish I could take Hillary's umbrage more seriously.

  15. "Italy's highest criminal court on Wednesday upheld the convictions of 23 Americans in the kidnapping of an Egyptian terror suspect as part of the CIA's extraordinary rendition program.

The ruling marks the final appeal in the first trial anywhere in the world involving the CIA's practice of abducting terror suspects and transferring them to third countries where torture is permitted

The 23 Americans all were convicted in absentia following a three-and-a-half-year trial, and have never been in Italian custody. They risk arrest if they travel to Europe and one of their court-appointed lawyers suggested that the final verdict would open the way for the Italian government to seek their extradition.

`'It went badly. It went very badly,” lawyer Alessia Sorgato said. `'Now they will ask for extradition.”

The Americans and two Italians were convicted last year of involvement in the kidnapping of Osama Moustafa Hassan Nasr, also known as Abu Omar, from a Milan street on Feb. 17, 2003 — the first convictions anywhere in the world against people involved in the CIA's practice of abducting terror suspects and transferring them to third countries where torture was permitted. The cleric was transferred to U.S. military bases in Italy and Germany before being moved to Egypt, where he says he was tortured. He has since been released.

Those convicted include the former Milan CIA station chief, Robert Seldon Lady, whose original seven-year sentence was raised to nine years on appeal. The other 22 Americans, all but one identified by prosecutors as CIA agents, face seven-year terms."

Iran’s extremist militias and their proxies were behind a recent string of terror attacks against Israeli diplomatic targets around the globe and might seek to strike the United States, U.S. counterterrorism officials said Wednesday.
“We have seen an uptick in operational activity by the Quds Force over the last year or so,” National Counter-Terrorism Center Director Matthew G. Olsen told a hearing of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Mr. Olsen said the Quds Force, the elite division of the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps responsible for operations abroad, “poses a threat beyond the immediate [Middle East] region,” including to the U.S. homeland.
He cited the federal prosecution last year of a senior member of the force for involvement in a failed plot to kill the Saudi ambassador to the U.S. by bombing a Washington restaurant.

As for the Iranians striking at Israeli targets "around the globe", one would have to wonder why they are so ineffectual in those strikes. While Iranian scientists and engineers are gunned down with methodical efficency, inside Iran, the Iranians can barely manage to bomb an occasional bus full of tourists in Europe in retaliation.

  21. On 11 October 2011, United States officials alleged there was a plot tied to the Iranian government to assassinate Saudi ambassador Adel al-Jubeir in the United States. The plot was referred to as the "Iran assassination plot" or the "Iran terror plot" in the media, while the Federal Bureau of Investigation named the case "Operation Red Coalition".[1][2][3]

Iranian nationals Manssor Arbabsiar and Gholam Shakuri were charged on 11 October 2011 in federal court in New York with plotting to assassinate Al-Jubeir.[4][5] According to U.S. officials, the two planned to kill Al-Jubeir at a restaurant with a bomb and subsequently bomb the Saudi embassy and the Israeli embassy in Washington, D.C.[6][7] Bombings in Buenos Aires were also discussed. Arbabsiar was arrested on 29 September 2011 at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York while Shakuri remained at large.[8] On 24 October 2011, Arbabsiar pleaded not guilty.[9]

The allegations of an Iranian plot met with a stream of disbelief from a number of foreign officials and analysts. Senior U.S. officials struggled to explain why the Quds Force would attempt such a delicate plot in such an unskilled style.

No evidence was presented implicating Iran's most senior leaders.[10]
    ...

Kenneth Katzman, a Middle East analyst at the Congressional Research Service, said, "There is simply no precedent – or even reasonable rationale – for Iran working any plot, no matter where located, through a non-Muslim proxy such as Mexican drug gangs.... The Iranian modus operandi is only to trust sensitive plots to their own employees, or to trusted proxies such as Hezbollah, Saudi Hezbollah, Hamas, the Sadr faction in Iraq, Iran-friendly extremist Muslims in Afghanistan and other pro-Iranian Muslim groups."[24]

Reza Sayyah from CNN questioned the plausibility of the claim by asking, "Did an elite branch of Iran's military handpick a divorced, 56-year-old Iranian-American used-car salesman from Texas to hire a hitman from a Mexican drug cartel to assassinate the ambassador to Saudi Arabia by blowing up a bomb in a crowded restaurant in Washington?"[25]

I mentioned the timing of the case was a little suspicious. This all occurred right at the time the US was making a major push at the UN for expanded sanctions and was trying, unsuccessfully, to get Russia to go along.

  22. Israel teams with terror group to kill Iran's nuclear scientists, U.S. officials tell NBC News

    NBC News.

Updated: 11:14 a.m. ET -- Deadly attacks on Iranian nuclear scientists are being carried out by an Iranian dissident group that is financed, trained and armed by Israel’s secret service, U.S. officials tell NBC News, confirming charges leveled by Iran’s leaders.

The group, the People’s Mujahedin of Iran, has long been designated as a terrorist group by the United States, accused of killing American servicemen and contractors in the 1970s and supporting the takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran before breaking with the Iranian mullahs in 1980.

The attacks, which have killed five Iranian nuclear scientists since 2007 and may have destroyed a missile research and development site, have been carried out in dramatic fashion, with motorcycle-borne assailants often attaching small magnetic bombs to the exterior of the victims’ cars.

"Our rebalance to the Asia-Pacific region is not an attempt to contain China," Mr. Panetta said. "It is an attempt to engage China and expand its role in the Pacific."

Both the right and left have provocative intellectual takes on how this new world came to be: Charles Murray’s “Coming Apart” and Chris Hayes’s “Twilight of the Elites,” respectively, are this year’s prime examples. But both takes are longer on description than prescription, and neither has much purchase on our politics.

However one tells the story, it’s an increasingly unhappy one. Yet on the evidence of what our leaders and would-be leaders say when we’re not supposed to be listening, there’s nobody in either party who cares enough to do anything to change it.

Obama leads Romney by 14.2 points, 52 percent to 37.8 percent, in the Detroit News/WDIV Local 4 poll, a solid improvement from August pre-convention polls in which the president held a six-point advantage, 48 percent to 42 percent. In this month's poll, 8.7 percent of voters were undecided.

    From The Detroit News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20120920/POLITICS01/209200391#ixzz270u946hh
