COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

A post-Arab Spring Egyptian mob stormed the U.S. Embassy in Cairo Tuesday, ripped down the American flag and tore it to shreds.

…and how are things going in NATO supported Libya?

Who would have guessed?

… and what about the noble Kosovars that we loved so much

  2. Was just going to mention that, how well the arab spring is working out. I recall Hillary saying how stable Egypt was, and they were on top of things. I see Americans dead, American flags burning, Christians being brutalized, last Jewish synagogue closing, and we're sending them another billion to help out on their debt.

Just what Obama hoped for: the Muslims Brothers taking over. And if Obama likes it, his slave Rufus must like it too.

Meanwhile, Obama not going to meet with Netanyahu.

    3. In the Middle East, you're "dead meat" if you are caught in a bluff. Israel and Iran both understand this truth all too well. Netanyahu is now in the gravest danger of falling into that trap. He risks becoming Israel's Antony Eden. Having been so vocal and so steadfast in his determination to stop Iran from progressing on its path to nuclear weapons, he now must choose between pressing ahead with an extremely dangerous (some might say reckless) military strike of some sort (not necessarily an air strike), and "backing down", thereby signalling to Iran that Israel cannot stop the Iranian nuclear program. Having already engaged in cyberwar and assassinations of scientists, can Israel simply back down?

  4. Further muddying the picture: Apple's shares often dip after product announcements, losing some of the gains they make in the frenzied lead-up.

    ...

Mr Cochran is no longer around to defend himself against that claim, having died of a brain tumour in 2005. However, Alan Dershowitz, a Harvard law professor who served on Mr Cochran's team, said it was "a total fabrication" and pointed out that "the defence doesn't get access to evidence except under controlled circumstances".

    ...

Mr Darden responded by saying that issuing such a complaint would have amounted to a "whiny-little-snitch approach to life".

  7. Quite amusing as at the moment Obama and Netahanyu aren't on the best of terms.

It is going to come down to one simple thing, the Israeli's will throw their weight behind whoever will support the hawks and give a green light to attacking Iran AND protecting Israel from the savage backlash that is guaranteed to follow.

Whilst Obama is full on in supporting and protecting Israel if the Iranians did attack without warning or provocation, he is listening not only to his own people but also the people in Tel Aviv like IDF Generals etc who are saying its suicide to attack Iran.

Romney on the other hand is like Bush, he will go in, he will attack Iran without warning or provocation and the voice of sense and reason will be silenced in his hearing.

Personally, if the Israeli's want to fight Iran, fine let them do it alone but don't bring us into the fight, its not our fight and wiser heads know that Russia and China have been quietly building their forces up in the region, if America gets involved then the SCO will side by Iran and we are looking at a world war.

(...and to Obama voters in the USA)

"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

John Christopher "Chris" Stevens (April 1, 1960[1] – September 11, 2012) was a diplomat and lawyer who served as the U.S. Ambassador to Libya from June 2012 to September 2012.[2][3] He died when Islamic extremists attacked the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, on September 11, 2012.[4][2][5]

    Early life

Stevens was born and raised in Northern California. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1982. From 1983 to 1985, he taught English as a Peace Corps volunteer in Morocco. He graduated with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989. He later studied for a Master of Science (M.S.) from the National War College in 2010. He spoke Arabic and French.

Prior to joining the United States Foreign Service, he was an international trade lawyer based in Washington, D.C.[3]

    ---

"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

"Well now, Mr. Scorpion! How do I know that if I try to help you, you wont try to kill me?" asked the frog hesitantly.

"Because," the scorpion replied, "If I try to kill you, then I would die too, for you see I cannot swim!"

Now this seemed to make sense to the frog. But he asked. "What about when I get close to the bank? You could still try to kill me and get back to the shore!"

"This is true," agreed the scorpion, "But then I wouldn't be able to get to the other side of the river!"

"Alright then...how do I know you wont just wait till we get to the other side and THEN kill me?" said the frog.

"Ahh...," crooned the scorpion, "Because you see, once you've taken me to the other side of this river, I will be so grateful for your help, that it would hardly be fair to reward you with death, now would it?!"

So the frog agreed to take the scorpion across the river. He swam over to the bank and settled himself near the mud to pick up his passenger. The scorpion crawled onto the frog's back, his sharp claws prickling into the frog's soft hide, and the frog slid into the river. The muddy water swirled around them, but the frog stayed near the surface so the scorpion would not drown. He kicked strongly through the first half of the stream, his flippers paddling wildly against the current.

Halfway across the river, the frog suddenly felt a sharp sting in his back and, out of the corner of his eye, saw the scorpion remove his stinger from the frog's back. A deadening numbness began to creep into his limbs.

"You fool!" croaked the frog, "Now we shall both die! Why on earth did you do that?"

The scorpion shrugged, and did a little jig on the drownings frog's back.

"I could not help myself. It is my nature."

Then they both sank into the muddy waters of the swiftly flowing river.

Self destruction - "Its my Nature", said the Scorpion...

Ash you are a dumb dumb (Sam is wearing off on me or I would have called you a fucking moron.)

You are an idiot in at least three ways.

First, you blame Catholics for the actions of a certain small percentage of priests.

Seconds, you ignore the fact that the incidence of child abuse among Catholic priests is no more, and some studies say less, than that of other religious ministers. And going beyond religion, it is way less than within the general population where adults have power relations over children.

Third, you appear to be a bit of a hypocritic in that you ignore child abuse among one of you favorite groups, school teachers where percentagewise the abuse is multiple times that of Catholic priests. With your background surely you are aware of that.

Incidences of abuse within the Catholic Church go back forty years yet the the reports were mainly clustered in the 90's. The abuse scandal makes good press and the Church has money to pay lawsuits. (The Catholic Church was also the only one of these groups that contracted an outside agency to publically investigate the scandal.) It's funny how abuse by other groups is pretty much ignored by the press. Even so there are columns writted on it and there are many studies on the subject. Of course, abuse among school teachers goes unreported primarily because of the terms of teacher contracts.

Abuse among priests is dispicable. However, your ignorance of or ignoring of the broader context is telling. I used to think you were just being funny in constantly bringing it up; however, the stupid quote noted above makes me wonder.

The fact that I don't say anything about Muslims is due more to the fact that I am unaware of how widespread the practices are among them. You'll note I'm not among the chorus of nitwits that accuses the entire faith of the abuses of some.

However, the abuse scandal within the Catholic Church has been a big story for couple of decades. There is little excuse for not knowing the facts.

To continually harp on one side of the story while ignoring the overall context is, as I said, telling.

Ash, given the origins and history of the city currently called Jeruselem you were much safer making your point to Doug based on history. Yet,that is merely a red herring with regard to the actual point he was making which was that today in the ME in countries ruled by Sharia (a growing number by the way) the Muslim religion in general can hardly be called a tolerant one.

Any argument, based on access to a city that is considered holy to three major religions, should be based on what is currently happening in the ME not what happened in the 13th century or something as irrelevant to this argument as the perverted inclinations of some priests which appears to be one of your favorite bugaboos.

When Jenny says, "Who gives a crap?" Doug, posting in his own name, berates her as an ignoramus.

Now, expanding his rant to issues never even hinted at in his original post, he tells us that it was all about Obama giving Jeruselem to Muslim terrorists and that Jenny should be ashamed of herself for betraying women throughout the Muslim world.

You are just like the Democratic convention weasels hurriedly amending the platform to kiss the Jewish ass in hope of votes come election time.

There is a reason why the vast majority of States refused to put their Embassies in Jerusalem and opted for Tel Aviv instead.

Your confusion - well, that is mistaking some sort of access to religious sites as the prime rationale for sole jurisdiction of greater Jerusalem. It seems you also think the Israelis are offering easy access to all while forgetting about "THE WALL" and all those check points throughout the occupied territories. Yes, old man, it is you who are confused and PC regarding these topics. Arrogant and pompous - just read your last few posts and judge the tone yourself.

    15. .

My, my, Ash. You seem to have your panties in a twist again and you know you always get a little hysterical when that happens.

Arrogant and pompous? I don't think anyone here including me would fault you on that characterization; however, it's irrelevant to the argument.

Hypocritical? I don't think so. Also, I'm sure you will concede that my characterization of you as hypocritical had nothing to do with Jerusalem but more with your constant denunciation of Catholic priests while ignoring context and the much more prevalent abuse committed by school teachers.

PC? Laughable, despite your remonstrance’s. I would suggest you look up the meaning of the word and then consider the current sources that publically support your position on Muslims in the ME (whether they actually believe it or not). Merely, calling someone PC is meaningless unless you can back it up. However, I'll grant you, to the mindless, it may be a convincing argument.

Confused? Well, let's see who is confused here.

Doug, started out with a shot at me regarding a previous post involving a comment by Jenny. (I responded to Doug's post just prior to your last comment.)

The conversation then morphed into a discussion between you and Doug involving Islam and the reasons he didn't want to see an Islamic government controlling Jerusalem. It was at this point you brought up your, IMO, silly little analogy about Catholic priests and expanded that to the "religion of pedophiles" meme, at which point I entered the conversation.

You then pointed out that while your analogy was absurd Doug's characterization was equally absurd. I merely stated there was some truth in Doug's characterization.

Over the past 60 years, the ME has been riven by sectarian strife. Everyone and his brother there have contributed to it, Christians, Jews, Copts, and Muslims; however, we see it most with Muslims because they are the overwhelming majority. To deny that there is a problem with the Muslims in the ME is to deny reality; it is to ignore the results of the Arab Spring, it is to ignore that secular governments are being replaced by theocracies based on Sharia, it is to ignore the mass exodus of Christians, Jews, and other religious minorities as they are forced out of Islamic countries.

And I am not even touching on the religious tenets of Islam which are in many cases inimical to western mores but only on its lack of tolerance. Given what we've seen recently in the ME, in the absence of Jerusalem being declared an open and free city with its own independent governance, and given only an either/or choice I would much rather see Jerusalem governed by the Israeli's than governed by the Islamists.

But to continue, you then display your lack of critical thought by trying to switch the conversation from Jerusalem to the issue of the "occupied territories". You accuse me of supporting Israel on all these issues, a statement at odds with the many jousts I’ve had with wio on these subjects. You lack logical arguments and so now you are bouncing around like a cat chasing a moth.

You are either ignorant of what is currently going on in the ME, or merely ignore it, or your antipathy towards Israel or your PC inclinations towards Muslims has blinded you. I have said it here a number of times. There will never be peace in the ME. Blame it on anyone you want as long as the US doesn't get dragged into it. My feelings were summed up by Jenny's statement, at this point "Who gives a crap."

Not very PC, but what the hell.

"This is a political movie," said Bacile. "The U.S. lost a lot of money and a lot of people in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but we're fighting with ideas."

Bacile, a California real estate developer who identifies himself as an Israeli Jew, said he believes the movie will help his native land by exposing Islam's flaws to the world.

"Islam is a cancer, period," he said repeatedly, his solemn voice

  26. The military assault against the US Consulate in Benghazi should not be seen as part of a protest against a low budget film which was insulting Islam – there were just a few peaceful protesters present at the event. Indeed, there have been no other demonstrations regarding this film in Libya.

We at Quilliam believe the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi was a well planned terrorist attack that would have occurred regardless of the demonstration, to serve another purpose. According to information obtained by Quilliam – from foreign sources and from within Benghazi – we have reason to believe that the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi came to avenge the death of Abu Yaya al-Libi, al-Qaeda’s second in command killed a few months ago.

The reasons for this are as follows:

•24 hours before this attack, none other than the leader of al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, released a video on Jihadist forums to mark the anniversary of 9/11. In this video, Zawahiri acknowledged the death of his second in command Abu Yahya and urged Libyans to avenge his killing.

•According to our sources, the attack was the work of roughly 20 militants, prepared for a military assault – it is rare that an RPG7 is present at a peaceful protest.

•According to our sources, the attack against the Consulate had two waves. The first attack led to . . . . . . . .

    Alternate theory

This sounds kinda likely to me.

  27. ash asks: Doug,

Why do you think Israels claim to Jerusalem is so much stronger than all the other historical claims?

Ash, Under Israeli rule the holy islamic and christian sites are administrated by the islamic waif (trust) and the christian site by their churches. ONLY under Israeli rule has every religion had access to their holy sites. the only exception of course it the Jews who have been prevented from access to the Temple Mount by the Israeli government.

Now you want to look at history?

Please show me anywhere that islam has allowed other faiths to have access to their places of prayer.

  28. The attack on the U.S. consulate was the second this year. In June, suspected Islamic militants detonated an improvised explosive device at the same compound.

A Libyan guard was injured, but no Americans were harmed. In the spring, the International Committee for the Red Cross offices in Benghazi were also targeted.

Washington has long been leery of the radical Islamic fringe in Libya. The largest number of foreign fighters in Iraq waging battles against U.S. soldiers were from two towns in eastern Libya, and U.S. drones have monitored those locations since the Libyan uprising last year.

  29. There’s the rub, of course. Some things are off limits, and rightly so.

Others have no limits at all. Several radio presenters asked me yesterday if the unrest in Cairo and Benghazi may have been timed to “coincide with 9/11”.

It simply never occurred to them to ask if the video-clip provocateurs had chosen their date-for-release to coincide with 9/11.

  30. A report broadcast Tuesday on the state-owned Rossiya 1 channel claimed to have found the mastermind behind the Pussy Riot controversy: Boris A. Berezovsky, the exiled Russian tycoon living in London. The second installment of “Provocateurs,” a film by the journalist Arkady Mamontov, suggests that Mr. Berezovsky financed the punk band in order to destabilize Russian society.

The film quotes a Moscow-based religious activist, Alexey Veshnyak, saying that Mr. Berezovsky had been plotting the punk band’s performance in Christ the Savior Cathedral since at least 2011, providing money and strategic guidance. Mr. Veshnyak says that Mr. Berezovsky shared his plans with him in London that February, pointing to photos of the band member Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and her husband, Pyotr Verzilov, and saying, “We will soon start acting in the church’s direction.”

  31. The 1988 debate between Dukakis and George H. W. Bush featured this famous question from moderator Bernard King: ”Governor, if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?” Dukakis said, ”No, I don’t, Bernard,” and then, in classic politician fashion, changed the subject to something he apparently did want to talk about: his record on violent crime as governor and his views about the war on drugs.

    ...

But, even in 2000, this focus on presidential debates obscures an important point: debates aren’t the only thing that voters are hearing and seeing in the weeks before the election. So even a careful comparison of polls before and after a debate assumes, perhaps incorrectly, that any change was due to the debate itself or to news coverage about the debate—and not to other events, television advertising, or the like.

    ...

A month ago, Obama’s advisers declared that they expect Mitt Romney to get “a surge of positive media attention and a boost in the opinion polls after the first presidential debate.” That may or may not prove true.
