COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Iraq - Members of the militant group ISIS posted gruesome photos on Twitter Sunday night claiming they slaughtered 1,700 Iraqi officials and soldiers.

Remember who wanted to arm the “Syrian Opposition”?
Who else but John McCain

Sunni insurgents led by ISIS jihadists captured the northwestern Iraqi town of Tal Afar on Sunday, reports say, as the militants continue their advance on Baghdad. The US says it is relocating some of its embassy staff to other Iraqi cities.
The militants from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS/ISIL) overran the town after fighting with security forces, several people in the town told Reuters over the phone.
Iraqi Gen. Mohammed al-Quraishi confirmed to CNN that the city fell to Sunni rebels. Tal Afar is located in the Nineveh province and has a population of about 80,000 people, most of whom are Iraqi Turkmen.

ISIS has also reportedly captured two villages in Diyala province.

The story of the three teenagers missing in Israel continues ...

At the opening of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said, “Those who perpetrated the abduction of our youths were members of Hamas – the same Hamas that Abu Mazen made a unity government with; this has severe repercussions.”

No major concern for the three victims, but lots of political posturing, while not presenting any evidence to the world to substantiate his claims of who has kidnapped a US citizen ...

A high-ranking official with Israeli Central Command said that they are believed to be in the West Bank,
but he is not fully certain.
He said security forces are focusing on Hamas infrastructure in the southern West Bank. At least 2,000 Israeli troops have been mobilized to locate the missing teens.
Right after the abduction, one of the teens managed to call the police hotline and say "We've been kidnapped."

Among those arrested was former Hamas spokesman Hassan Yousef.

Obviously Hassan Yousef is a key person in the kidnapping ring, just as Jay Carney was an operational agent of the BLM at Clive Bundy's ranch in Nevada. Bibi is using the kidnapping for political purposes, there has been no evidence presented that Hamas has those teens.

We could trust, but Mr Reagan demanded verification.
Did we not learn the lesson when we were told ...
Saddam had Weapons of Mass Destruction, too!

      Haaratz reports

Kidnappers received a gift they hadn’t expected - nearly six hours of total quiet before Israeli security forces launched a search operation.

How did Hamas arrange the IDF to stand down?
When did Hamas gain such influence?

Bibi needed a Crisis, an citizen of the US was kidnapped
Who could have kept the 'lid on' this for six hours, other than the Mossad?

      From Haaratz

Thursday’s attack isn’t necessarily linked to it, as Netanyahu tried to claim – especially since it probably took a long time to plan. The Hamas leadership Sunday denied it was responsible, and also denied knowing who was.

During consultations Netanyahu held with security officials, it was decided to take other steps against Hamas in the West Bank beyond the arrests, though these may well play out over several weeks, unrelated to the efforts at finding the missing teenagers.

The Palestinian Authority will condemn these measures publicly, but will secretly welcome them. The kidnapping has seriously embarrassed PA President Mahmoud Abbas, and the Palestinian security apparatus is helping Israel search for the kidnapped teens.“They are helping us out of what they see as the Palestinian interest,” a senior IDF officer said Sunday.

An operation long in planning, used as a spring board for a major campaign against the Palestinian Authority.
While the Palestinian Authority is assisting in trying to find the missing teens ...

All the signs of a Mossad operation, to further political Bibi's agenda ...

  2. Any Lessons Here?

    Don’t Walk Away from War
    It’s Not the American Way

    By Tom Engelhardt

The United States has been at war -- major boots-on-the-ground conflicts and minor interventions, firefights, air strikes, drone assassination campaigns, occupations, special ops raids, proxy conflicts, and covert actions -- nearly nonstop since the Vietnam War began. That’s more than half a century of experience with war, American-style, and yet few in our world bother to draw the obvious conclusions.

Given the historical record, those conclusions should be staring us in the face. They are, however, the words that can’t be said in a country committed to a military-first approach to the world, a continual build-up of its forces, an emphasis on pioneering work in the development and deployment of the latest destructive technology, and a repetitious cycling through styles of war from full-scale invasions and occupations to counterinsurgency, proxy wars, and back again.

So here are five straightforward lessons -- none acceptable in what passes for discussion and debate in this country -- that could be drawn from that last half century of every kind of American warfare:

    1. No matter how you define American-style war or its goals, it doesn’t work. Ever.

    2. No matter how you pose the problems of our world, it doesn’t solve them. Never.

    3. No matter how often you cite the use of military force to “stabilize” or “protect” or “liberate” countries or regions, it is a destabilizing force.

    4. No matter how regularly you praise the American way of war and its “warriors,” the U.S. military is incapable of winning its wars.

    5. No matter how often American presidents claim that the U.S. military is “the finest fighting force in history,” the evidence is in: it isn’t.

And here’s a bonus lesson: if as a polity we were to take these five no-brainers to heart and stop fighting endless wars, which drain us of national treasure, we would also have a long-term solution to the Veterans Administration health-care crisis. It’s not the sort of thing said in our world, but the VA is in a crisis of financing and caregiving that, in the present context, cannot be solved, no matter whom you hire or fire. The only long-term solution would be to stop fighting losing wars that the American people will pay for decades into the future, as the cost in broken bodies and broken lives is translated into medical care and dumped on the VA.

  4. American failure: More clearly than ever, the success of ISIS forces exposes the overambitious goals of the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq (and, likewise, of Afghanistan), which cost the West thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars. The fancy façade of $53 billion in American-sponsored institutions, from failed hospitals to the Iraqi National Symphony, have been exposed as the fiasco they are. ISIS soldiers standing triumphant atop U.S.-supplied military equipment bring home the folly of once-high American hopes for "a stable, democratic, and prosperous Iraq."

Republicans: Republicans unfairly blame the ISIS victories on Barack Obama. No: George W. Bush made the commitment to remake Iraq, and in 2008 he signed the Status of Forces Agreement that terminated the American military presence in Iraq at the close of 2011. For the Republican party to move forward in foreign policy, it must acknowledge these errors and learn from them, not avoid them by heaping blame on Obama.

Democrats: The execution of Osama bin Laden three years ago was an important symbolic step of vengeance. But it made almost no difference operationally and it's time for Obama to stop crowing about al-Qaeda being defeated. In fact, al-Qaeda and its partners are more dangerous than ever, having moved on from terrorism to conquering territory. The well-being of Americans and others depend on this reality's being recognized and acted upon.

Western policy: This is basically a Middle Eastern problem, and outside powers should aim to protect their own interests, not solve the Middle East’s crises. Tehran, not we, should fight ISIS.

Daniel Pipes is president of the Middle East Forum.

    ....

    Vienna talks

The BBC's Rajini Vaidyanathan in Washington says that while the US and Iran are old adversaries both have an interest in curbing the growing threat posed by ISIS and both are considering military support to the Iraqi government.

The US is said to be considering direct discussions with Tehran which could even take place as early as this week.

The two countries are due to hold the latest round of talks on Iran's nuclear programme in Vienna.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said he will consider cooperation if the US takes action in Iraq.

Netanyahu fails to derail Palestinian unity government

‘... The new Palestinian unity government won international recognition and validation despite Israel’s attempts to put a spoke in the wheel. Its failure to derail the unity government exposed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who suddenly has had his bluff called off.

Even the powerful American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) lobby issued a weak statement calling on Congress simply to “ensure that US law is followed.”

The Israeli leader, who lived in the United States for some time and regularly boasts to friends that he knows the country as well as any Israeli, appears to have overreached. Instead of isolating the new Palestinian government headed by Rami Hamdallah, he has himself been isolated.’

'Obama didn't end the Iraq War: He restarted it'
    By Rick Moran

Nice analysis from Mario Loyola writing at NRO about Obama's real culpability in what's happening today in Iraq.

Obama came into office promising to end the war in Iraq. As Loyola points out, the war was already over. What he was really trying to do was prove the war was a mistake and that the exerrtion of American power led to the error.

To that end, he left Iraq far too early and the consequences were predictable.

This novel conception of when wars end suggests Obama may yet pull our forces out of Europe and the Far East in order to “end” World War II. It also helps to explain how he came to equate “responsibly ending the war in Iraq” with throwing away everything we had gained from it. Obama made it plain from the start that he saw no reason to keep investing in a mistake. He let our military presence in Iraq lapse, and left the Iraqi government to fend for itself when it was still far too fragile. There is a reason we stayed in Germany and Japan and South Korea for decades after the fighting stopped: We didn’t want our sacrifices to be for nothing, and we didn’t want to have to fight again.

  18. Now the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, or ISIS — the very al-Qaeda forces we defeated in Iraq in 2007 — have come back and taken over huge swaths of the country, including most of the Sunni heartland to the west and north of Baghdad. Meanwhile, over in next-door Syria, Obama stood by while the rebels fighting Bashar Assad came under the dominance of extreme Islamist forces, and then sold them all out with the chemical-weapons deal in September 2013. Consequently, we have thrown the Iraqi government into a de facto alliance with the murderous Baathist regime in Syria — a feat that not even common enemies and a common ideology could achieve during Saddam’s rule — and now both governments find themselves increasingly dependent on Iran.

With Iran’s power and prestige thus enhanced, and rapidly filling the vacuum left behind by the U.S., the mullahs now see the possibility at long last of extending the Islamic Revolution across the Fertile Crescent. With our impending agreement to let Iran keep its nuclear-weapons programs, we can now settle comfortably into the role of a de facto subordinate ally of Iran, whose forces we may soon be helping with air strikes in Iraq. If you’re wondering where that leaves our actual allies among the Gulf kingdoms and Israel, they are wondering the same thing.

Foreign-policy mistakes are inevitable, and should generally be expected, if not always forgiven. But in its approach to Iraq and the Middle East as a whole, the Obama administration has been criminally negligent. It could be years and maybe decades before we see a situation as good as the one Obama found when he got to office — and things are almost certainly going to get far worse before they get better.

When a politician invests so much in trying to prove failure, what are we to expect but failure? ISIS was nearly dead and buried in 2008 following the surge. The fact that they were able to reconstitute themselves is due to two factors; the Syrian civil war where they first went to fight and recruit; and the policies of Prime Minister Maliki that angered Sunnis and fed Sunni paranoia about Shiite dominance. Both factors existed because Barack Obama failed to back the secular opposition (or, at least, the non-jihadist opposition) in Syria and because there was no restraining influence of American troops in Iraq, Maliki brought down the hammer on Sunnis.

In a very real sense, Loyola is right. It is decisions made by the president that has led directly to the situation Iraq finds itself in today. Restarting the war? He practically encouraged it with his policies

Arguments about Obama are silly. We had no business destabilizing Irag. We did. The facts speak for themselves. WE fucked them over as we fucked up our military and economy on our crusade against Saddam. . Saddam in his worst days was better than what exists today and what is coming tomorrow. None of it was ever any of our business. What we have today, will be a walk in the park compared to what will happen in the future.

The Neocons own this, lock, stock and barrel. The Israelis wanted the US to rid them of Saddam and Assad and the aptly named “Amen Chorus” in the US Congress complied. Israel and Saudi have been a disaster for the US and will always be the same as long as they control the political gangsters in DC.

Israel under the always hideous Netanyahu cannot stand to be out of the limelight. He tried to instigate US air strikes against Syria with his own scare mongering and air attacks but the British and American public said no. Obama, wisely, complied. Not like the idiot child, Bush.

Today, Netanyahu and the “existential” mother fuckers, right on cue, are making mass arrests and stirring the pot over the fabricated exaggerated crisis of three teenagers hitchhiking in occupied Palestinian territory. The always thuggish IDF is making mass arrests, further straining whatever civility is left in the area.

This comes after a year of Netanyahu trying his best to have the US attack Iran. Obama, wisely demurred.

Worse is coming. The Israeli nuclear monopoly will end. The arms will come from Russia, Korea or Pakistan. Not from Iran.

The US government had no business supporting the Israelis in their becoming a nuclear power. In all of human history, weapons technology and sole proprietorship have never existed together for more that a few decades . It is no different this time. It never is.

Those nuclear weapons will ultimately destroy Israel and much around them. The Bible thumpers will be pleased. They can all join Jesus with the lambs and Mohamed Atta in heaven,

The Israeli prefer al-Qeada and have formed an alliance with the Saudi tyranny.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secretary of State John Kerry says the Obama administration is willing to talk with Iran over deteriorating security conditions in Iraq and is not ruling potential U.S.-Iranian military cooperation in stemming the advance of Sunni extremists. Kerry also says U.S. drone strikes "may well" be an option.

    Another 'Good Day'.

  25. .

Nonsense. Prior to George W. Bush, the U.S. was at the height of its power. It was 'the' hyper-power in a disjointed world. It had prestige, influence, military and political power unrivalled in the world. Nothing even including an unprecedented and deadly asymmetric terrorist attack could have changed that. Yet, at the end of Bush's reign everything had changed due to the hubris, arrogance, overreach, and incompetence of one man and his neocon advisers. After Bush, the world had changed and the US had declined from hyper-power to merely superpower, the first amongst equals, the limits of its power fully established, its prestige its most valuable attribute diminished, its values despoiled, the rights of its citizens compromised, its economy destroyed, debt-ridden, and now viewed by many of its enemies as a paper tiger. All Obama did was follow in Bush's steps and continue to grease the skids towards decline.

In a very real sense, Loyola is right. It is decisions made by the president that has led directly to the situation Iraq finds itself in today. Restarting the war? He practically encouraged it with his policies

More nonsense. Only an idiot would blame Obama for anything that happened in Iraq. All he did was follow the Status of Forces Agreement signed by Bush in 2008 that called for 'all' US troops to be out of Iraq by the end of 2011.

The whole premise of the Rick Moran article is political garbage and nothing more, drivel posited by some neocon hack.

Let them kill each other long enough and godforsaken Iraq will break up into parts, just as the prescient Drinkin' Joe "Wet Drunk' Biden, Miss T and I have long urged.

    Even more nonsense.

As a result of US intervention and sectarian hatred within Iraq as well as the misguided policies of the government we helped install, civil war was inevitable whether before, now, or later. Any splitting of the country as a result of the civil war was predictable also as was the bloodshed and the dislocation of tens of thousands. There was no other reasonable result to expect given the sectarian animus and the pursuit by the various sides of the country's only real resource, oil.

To believe the resulting chaos would have been any different had the US tried to impose a division of the country into three parts is childish prattle. It adds one more touch of bathos to the whole sorry tragedy that was and is Iraq.

At least letting the chaos evolve on its own without more US interference prevents more blood being shed in the world due to US actions.

Now, the police chief of Mosul might have looked up and saw several thousand lunatics in pickup trucks, and told his guys, "time to go," but, eventually, that group of nutjobs will run up against a real military. And, the Iraqi military, as fouled up as it certainly is, will crush such a small force (especially, with various types of "help" from Iran, the U.S., etc.)

As the Iraqi army fled they left behind a bunch of US supplied stuff - armored personnel carriers, night vision goggles, rifles and other war material. You also have the complicity of the locals who aren't too keen on the Malaki rule run from Baghdad. The Kurds also capitalized on the kerfuffle and grabbed Kirkuk. Iraq is splintered along ethnic lines with each sector backed by regional powers. It won't be so easy to put humpty dumpty back together again simply by jarring the memory of Baghdadi and his 7000 followers in their pick-ups by launching a few missiles their way. Instead we are looking at the possibility of renewed sectarian conflict which could blossom into full civil war followed by a regional war.

Sorry guys, nothing so simple as well devised plans moving forward over the speed bump of a 7k guys and their pick-ups.

If you think that Mr Obama, and his backers have a deep concern for the Iraqi people, I'd say you were mistaken.

All of the US clients will be getting at least a portion of their goal set.
Iraq will be limited to production of no more than 3 million barrels of oil per day.
That has always been the quota, and the trigger point for military action. That chart was posted a few days ago.
Syria will be left out on a limb, with the Iranians now focused closer to home, and the US engaged with them on a working basis.

I could be wrong though given the intensity of the chirping by the critics 'It's all Obama's fault, we pulled out to early, we gotta do something'. A few bombs for show, a little shock and awe, just like the terrorists we all hate.

ISIS has had a good run but it will be tougher from here on out I suspect. The Kurds have replaced the fleeing police and army in the north and are consolidating their positions. Maliki is attempting to get the army to regroup for a counter attack. He has asked citizens (read Shia militias) to join the fight. The spokesman for al-Sistani has urged all Shia to join in the fight against ISIS. Evidently, thousands are agreeing to join in the fight. The President of Iran has indicated that ISIS will not be allowed to overthrow the government of Iraq. In Iraq, the Shia outnumber the Sunni two to one. This might not mean much if ISIS could motivate the Sunni population to fight; however, the ISIS pricks are even too radical for al Queda to stomach. I would be surprised if ISIS is able to motivate a general uprising of the Sunni population.

The Iraqi army fled pretty damn fast and I don't know how much of a stomach for a fight they have to retake the Sunni areas. With Iranian backing, and the Shia Imams call to arms they may very well may summon the force and find the will but if the Sunni side should also reach out (i.e. Saudi Arabia, Syria ect.) for help and get it that is where the conflict could extend and become regional. I hope the US stays out of it. Too many players, too many moving parts, too much risk for little national gain.

  43. No one buying claim that Lois Lerner’s IRS emails were lost
POSTED AT 1:21 PM ON JUNE 16, 2014 BY NOAH ROTHMAN

Last Friday afternoon, the Internal Revenue Service claimed that Lois Lerner, a former executive tasked with overseeing tax-exemption applications, lost thousands of emails after her computer crashed. Many of those emails, the tax collection agency claimed, could not be recovered.

This convenient excuse for failing to comply with a request from House investigators is not sitting well with some in the journalistic community.

“Do you believe in the Easter Bunny?” CNN’s John King asked his panel of political reporters on Monday. “Do you believe in Santa Claus? Do you believe that Lois Lerner’s emails suddenly went ‘poof?’”

King added that he agreed with Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI) who said that it was “unacceptable” that this information was just coming to light now, over a year after the investigation into allegations that the IRS targeted conservative political groups with undue scrutiny began.

“Waiting a year to tell the Congress makes me suspicious,” King said.

“It’s hard to believe in this era, where you have servers, and backup servers, and all kinds of technology that can recover all kinds of emails, that these emails simply don’t exist,” Associated Press reporter Julie Pace agreed. “If that is true, and they don’t exist, why wasn’t that one of the first things that was told to Congress?”

“I’m not sure what’s with this administration and computer problems, but it seems to be happening time and again,” Politico’s Manu Raju concurred.

It seems that even those predisposed to extend federal officials the benefit of the doubt are not accepting the claim that Lerner’s emails simply disappeared into thin air at face value.

In a sardonic segment on MSNBC’s Morning Joe on Monday, hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough ruthlessly mocked the notion that a hardware crash could eliminate files stored on remote servers.

“Mika, even you have to admit this is pretty ridiculous,” Scarborough probed.

“Pretty ridiculous,” Brzezinski replied. “Those emails exist.”

  46. Biden’s (and Miss T's and Bob's) Revenge: David Ignatius claims Iraq now ‘effectively partitioned’
POSTED AT 4:41 PM ON JUNE 16, 2014 BY NOAH ROTHMAN

In 2006, Vice President Joe Biden co-authored a New York Times op-ed in which he suggested that the only way to create a stable environment in Iraq was to partition the country along ethnic and religious lines. The authors’ hope was to integrate these semi-autonomous zones into a federal system that would preserve the fragile Iraqi peace once maintained by force. A newly Democratic U.S. Senate enthusiastically endorsed that plan in 2007, but it fell out of favor in the wake of the successful “surge” strategy.

That idea seems to making a comeback, however, as Iraq descends into chaos as the insurgent Islamist group ISIS continues its advance.

Speaking to MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell on Monday, Washington Post columnist David Ignatius said that the ISIS had “effectively partitioned” Iraq.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is notifying Congress that about 275 U.S. military personnel could deploy to Iraq.

Obama says the forces are going to provide support and security for U.S. personnel and the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad. He says the forces are equipped for combat and will remain in Iraq until the security situation becomes such that they are no longer needed.

About 160 troops are already in Iraq, including 50 Marines and more than 100 Army soldiers. Some of those soldiers have only recently arrived.

Under the authorization Obama outlined, a U.S. official says the U.S. will put an additional 100 soldiers in a nearby third country where they would be held in reserve until needed.

The White House says the U.S. military personnel are entering Iraq with its consent.

The Republicans will have to blame Bibi, for the next 9/11 and it will not be either a "Conspiracy" or a "Coincidence"...
... But a fulfillment of Israeli foreign policy!!

Thank you Ambassador Oren for telling US who is really going to be responsible.

    2. Trying to figure out where Grampy McCain is on this thing. He's going apeshit over Obama's inaction, but he wanted to support these same guys when they were in Syria.

    3. So many here wanted Big John to be President back in 2008, it makes me smile to remember that Bob was such a big supporter of John McCain.

He's still pissed about not getting the starring roll in "Dr. Strangelove"

  51. No one in this day and age of off-site backup servers and cloud computing believes that they lost two years of emails from the IRS chief because one platform went Tango Uniform. This isn't the days of Windows 98. I want a special prosecutor to find a copy of these emails, and I want to bring the idiot who claimed they were missing in front of a committee under oath to testify why they were reported lost. Follow it all the way up to the White House if need be. I don't know what's more frightening, that the Obama Administration is destroying evidence or that they handle evidence like they handle everyone's medical information. But there is a legal requirement for Feds to keep their emails, and this is a nation of laws.

    1. Ms T, no one in DC gives a shit about what you want.

Bob's Republicans have to act or there is no play.
John "Boner" Boehner has the script and he is not going to get on the stage.

Bob's other boy, Labrador, is talking about Immigration, not prosecution of Administration officials.
      He's another lap dog, too.

The money changed hands and the Iraqi Army Generals hit the highway ...

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region — Top military commanders assured Mosul Governor Athil al-Nujaifi that Iraqi forces were securing the province hours before they fled along with thousands of troops, leaving Mosul in the hands of tribes and extremists.

Speaking to Rudaw in Erbil, Nujaifi said the commander of Iraq's ground forces, General Ali Ghaidan, and the deputy army chief, Lieutenant General Abboud Qanbar, “told me that the Iraqi army was in control and that we should not worry. But the next morning they fled without even telling me.”

He said he was “shocked” at how quickly the Iraqi Army collapsed in Mosul.

    “I felt cheated,” Nujaifi added.
“They betrayed me and all the of people Iraq.”

Just as they had done when the US was the paymaster.
It was always the money, General P knew the deal, so do the Saudi.

that Israel would accept al-Qaeda operatives taking power in Syria.
