COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

In the discourse over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...we have come to occupy a kind of moral safe house, where everyone is to blame so no one is guilty

The root of the pain and suffering of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is the Israeli occupation of Palestine. End the occupation and our children will finally be able to walk the holy land as equals. Continue the occupation and our collective misery will endure for another generation, an inheritance ultimately unworthy of our two great peoples.

Said M. Hamad is the chief representative for the Palestinian General Delegation in Canada
I couldn’t agree more with the sentiments expressed yesterday by Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird in his Globe op-ed, “It’s time to demilitarize the West Bank and Gaza.”
The first step toward demilitarization, naturally, would be to end Israel’s military occupation, which began in 1967 and which continues to prevent Palestinians from exercising their inalienable right to self-governance.
MORE RELATED TO THIS STORY

Mr. Baird reminds us that the new Palestinian unity government is in compliance with the Quartet principles; it has renounced violence, recognized Israel, and sworn to uphold all previous agreements.
The question is why should Israel be held to a different standard? Is it too much to ask that Israeli governments abide by the same principles: recognize Palestine, renounce violence, and uphold all previous agreements?
In the discourse over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I believe we have come to occupy a kind of moral safe house, where everyone is to blame so no one is guilty.
This logical and ethical fallacy has been thrown into stark relief by the suspected kidnapping of three missing Israeli teenagers, Eyal Yifrach, 19, Naftali Frankel, 16, and Gil-ad Shaar, 16. The Palestinian Authority is co-operating fully in the search and we are all praying for their safe return. Children should be off-limits and no double standards should be tolerated.
It therefore bears reminding that Palestinian families are all too familiar with the nightmare of child abduction. According to Defence for Children International (DCI), each year approximately 500-700 Palestinian children – some as young as 12 years old – are detained in the Israeli military prison system, where a 2013 UNICEF report noted ill-treatment of children is “widespread and systematic.”
The majority of children are abducted from their homes during the middle of the night by heavily armed Israeli soldiers. During 2013, 76.5 per cent of Palestinian children detained by the Israeli military in the occupied West Bank endured some form of physical violence during arrest, transfer, or interrogation. DCI notes that Palestinian child detainees are then prosecuted in Israeli military courts that “lack fundamental fair trial guarantees and are not designed or administered to respect children’s rights.” Some are not even charged or tried and languish indefinitely in what is euphemistically known as ‘administrative detention.’ These kidnappings have coincided with other recent tragedies. Last week, Israeli security forces murdered a Palestinian youth in the streets of Ramallah for participating in a demonstration. That news followed closely on the heels of the murder last month of two unarmed Palestinian teenagers – 15 and 17 years old – by Israeli forces using live ammunition.

With these facts in mind it’s time to reassess the current situation.

  1. GUARDIAN -

    Israeli troops killed a Palestinian teenager in the occupied West Bank on Friday and arrested 25 people, pursuing a weeklong crackdown against Islamist militants and house-to-house searches for three Israeli teenagers who went missing eight days ago.

    Palestinian medics said Mohammed Dudin, 15, was killed in the village of Dura, near the city of Hebron. The Israeli military said troops had fired live ammunition when rocks and firebombs were thrown at them during an arrest raid.

    Israel said it arrested 25 people overnight in about 200 towns, refugee camps and cities in the West Bank, totalling 330 arrests including 240 from Hamas, the Islamist group Israel accuses of abducting the Israeli teenagers who went missing near a Jewish settlement on 13 June.

    Dudin was the second Palestinian killed since the raids began.

    If they are in ‘administrative detention" then in fact they have lawyers, food, communication with family members, education classes and the internet. Hardly "kidnappings" Unless now every single arrest by a police force of a minor across the world is to be called a "kidnapping" now..

  9. Israel sits on 1/900th of the middle east.

    20% of it's citizens are arabs.

    There are more arabs that are citizens of Israel today than existed in the area "from the river to the sea" in 1948. There is no ethnic ceasing of arabs anywhere in the middle east (by Israel anyway).

    Now, the area of the Arab OCCUPIED middle east, 899/900th of the area, over 800,000 Jews that had lived on those lands 1000 years before the arab conquered same area were driven out, ethnically cleansed and driven into the new Jewish state in 1948. It is true that 650,000 arabs that today call themselves "palestinians" did also leave, were driven out or got out of the way of the incoming arab armies that told them to do so.

    Regardless of how, more Jews were evacuated than Arabs in the creation of the Modern State of Israel. 800k verses 650k Let us not forget or forgive that the Arabs were promised a state as well and REFUSED.

    It's the REFUSAL by the arabs for statehood, multiple times that has brought us to this point.

    You cannot simply turn the clock back and demand the offer from 50 years ago that you turned down then.

    Want a state Palestinians? Seek true peace. You will not get all of your demand as Israel will not get all of its.

    But you, by going around the peace process and declaring statehood without a negotiated deal? Are making it easy for Israel to do the same.

  10. The reality, which you may well know.

    The General Assembly passed on 29NOV1947 - Reslution 181, which RECOMMENDED that the ...

    Recommends to the United Kingdom, as the mandatory Power for Palestine, and to all other Members of the United Nations the adoption and implementation, with regard to the future Government of Palestine, of the Plan of Partition with Economic Union set out below;

    Requests that

    The Security Council take the necessary measures as provided for in the plan for its implementation;

    The Security Council consider, if circumstances during the transitional period require such consideration, whether the situation in Palestine constitutes a threat to the peace. If it decides that such a threat exists, and in order to maintain international peace and security, the Security Council should supplement the authorization of the General Assembly by taking measures, under Articles 39 and 41 of the Charter, to empower the United Nations Commission, as provided in this resolution, to exercise in Palestine the functions which are assigned to it by this resolution;

    The Security Council determine as a threat to the peace, breach of the peace or act of aggression, in accordance with Article 39 of the Charter, any attempt to alter by force the settlement envisaged by this resolution;

    The Trusteeship Council be informed of the responsibilities envisaged for it in this plan;

    Calls upon the inhabitants of Palestine to take such steps as may be necessary on their part to put this plan into effect;

    Appeals to all Governments and all peoples to refrain from taking any action which might hamper or delay the carrying out of these recommendations, and

    Authorizes the Secretary-General to reimburse travel and subsistence expenses of the members of the Commission referred to in Part 1, Section B, Paragraph I below, on such basis and in such form as he may determine most appropriate in the circumstances, and to provide the Commission with the necessary staff to assist in carrying out the functions assigned to the Commission by the General Assembly.

    The "Plan" was never voted upon, by the Security Council, and the inhabitants of the area did not sign on, either.
    The Resolution was ignored by all the parties. The Israeli UNILATERALLY declared an independent state on 15MAY1948
    Seems that no one accepted Resolution 181, concurrent to its passage, the Plan was never implemented..

    On 11MAY1949 the UN accepted the state of Israel as a member.

    If the UN accepted Palestine as a member, it would be as legitimate a State as Israel.

    After watching CSPN and the daily news this morning, I see that things are going as usual in Obama's OZ; stories about the Benghazi investigation, a story that Obama is planning on putting up more facilities in the border states to house the influx of children, hearings on the IRS scandal (this guy Koskinen is one smug s.o.b .), more news on ISIS in Iraq. Typical day. Hard to see where the president will get the time to get in a few holes of golf.

    Today's hearing was the first time I have seen this guy Koskinen who is heading up the IRS. He is a smug little prick and seems to be taking the whole affair as some kind of a joke. When asked if he thought he should apologize for the FUBAR in his agency and the lost e-mails, he said no. On another CSPN channel another IRS official was asked to comment on, with the incompetence and perhaps illegality we have seen in the IRS, why 'all' the top officials in the agency where given the highest performance ratings possible for the past four years.

    She offered that old chestnut: If we knew then what we know now.

    From Koskinen's testimony, it appears they intend to circle the wagons on the various scandals. And they will likely pull it off given they have Holder in their pocket. Even if they tried to get a special prosecutor in the House, Reed would knock it down in the Senate. I would think things would turn interesting in OZ if the GOP did manage to take the Senate.

  13. To date, the IDF has taken approximately 330 suspects into custody, 240 of whom identify themselves as Hamas members. More than 50 of them were included in the prisoner swap for kidnapped Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit. Some have likely forfeited their commuted sentences.

    "The arrest of 50 terrorists freed as part of the Shalit deal by our forces will delay their return for many years," Maj. Gen. Nitzan Alon, head of the IDF's Central Command," said in a letter to troops carrying out Operation Brother's Keeper, the Times of Israel reported. "Thus Hamas' attempt to release prisoners brought about the opposite result."

    The details of their commuted sentences reveal just how far Israel was willing to go to secure one soldier's release.

    According to the report, four were serving two consecutive life sentences, 13 were serving life sentences, 19 were in for more than 20 years, and five for up to 20 years -- all for terror-related crimes, including murder and manslaughter.

  14. At some point not too long ago, I gave Mr. Rat to understand that I would not engage him in conversations (arguments, if you will) about Judaism. I did not need to. Operating from the hypothesis that through use of a few, short observations (some mere snippets), using Christian orthodox doctrine as my foil, I could get reams of anti-Jewish feedback from conditioned monkeys, I tested my thought. To my delight, the monkeys climbed all over one another trying to get the peanuts and did not disappoint. Thus, for the past week, the Elephant Bar has been filled with commentary on Jews and I have not written a single word. Consequently, I accomplished three things: 1) I provided myself with a source of almost endless comedic humor. Frothing fascists without power are as laughable as Julius Streicher dangling from the end of a rope; 2) I proved that the EB caters to those obsessed and enraged by the very existence of Israel (Zion); and 3) I garnered a week’s worth of pathological excrement (Der Stürmer) by expending a trivial amount of effort.

    I hypothesized that a few short remarks touching upon Mississippi and the Marine Corps would elicit the “swarm effect”. This proved correct. After allowing the alleged veterans to run out enough rope, I pulled the lever to the gallows, providing VA generated documents proving my credentials. Then I “begged” for a statement of record to my rabbi and congregation challenging my record of service as a forgery and/or prevarication. As anticipated, all the blowhards lacked the balls to take the obvious step, if they were in fact certain of my willful misrepresentation. Finally, in the spirit of fair play, I challenged the alleged veterans to post proof of their own illustrious service to the United States and/or the reasons for receipt of VA benefits (Award Letter). In response, all that came back was bullshit, without even so little as a shred of government issued toilet paper. Why, when I respectfully hammered the “Big T” at the Belmont Club, demanding that this expert marksman “put up or shut up,” she took cover and has been conspicuous only by her absence. Her father would be very disappointed in his SEAL pup.

    It would be gratifying to know that something was learned from my little experiment. Unfortunately, that is not the case. You all behaved true to anticipated form. To my pagan morons, monkeys, and lapsed Catholics (they always return at death's door) I salute you with “due respect”, Sieg heil!

      Renewable electric power produced in 2011 by energy source
      Germany's renewable energy sector is among the most innovative and successful worldwide. The share of electricity produced from renewable energy in Germany has increased from 6.3 percent of the national total in 2000 to about 25 percent in the first half of 2012.[1][2] In 2011 20.5% (123.5 TWh) of Germany's electricity supply (603 TWh) was produced from renewable energy sources, more than the 2010 contribution of gas-fired power plants.[3][4] In 2010, investments totaling 26 billion euros were made in Germany’s renewable energies sector. Germany has been called "the world's first major renewable energy economy".[5]

      Siemens chief executive, Peter Löscher believes that Germany’s target of generating 35 per cent of its electricity from renewables by 2020 is achievable – and, most probably, profitable for Europe’s largest engineering company. Nordex, Repower, Fuhrländer and Enercon are wind power companies based in Germany. More than 21,607 wind turbines are located in the German federal area and the country has plans to build more wind turbines.[6][7] As of 2011, Germany's federal government is working on a new plan for increasing renewable energy commercialization,[8] with a particular focus on offshore wind farms.[9] A major challenge is the development of sufficient network capacities for transmitting the power

    Renewable energy in Germany
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Renewable electric power produced in 2011 by energy source

    Germany's renewable energy sector is among the most innovative and successful worldwide. The share of electricity produced from renewable energy in Germany has increased from 6.3 percent of the national total in 2000 to about 25 percent in the first half of 2012.
    In 2011 20.5% (123.5 TWh) of Germany's electricity supply (603 TWh) was produced from renewable energy sources, more than the 2010 contribution of gas-fired power plants.[3][4] In 2010, investments totaling 26 billion euros were made in Germany’s renewable energies sector.

    As solar power installations rise quickly, in first half of 2012, about 5.3% of the total electricity demand was covered by solar power.[25]

    At 25 May 2012, a Saturday, solar power reached a new record with feeding 22 GW, as much as 20 nuclear power stations, into the German power grid, which made 50% of the nation's midday's electricity demand.

    The jump above the 20 GW level was due to increased capacity and bright sunshine nationwide.[26]

    2. Germany Sets New Record, Generating 74 Percent Of Power Needs From Renewable Energy

      By Kiley Kroh May 13, 2014 at 11:16 am

      http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/05/13/3436923/germany-energy-records/

      On Sunday, Germany’s impressive streak of renewable energy milestones continued, with renewable energy generation surging to a record portion — nearly 75 percent — of the country’s overall electricity demand by midday. With wind and solar in particular filling such a huge portion of the country’s power demand, electricity prices actually dipped into the negative for much of the afternoon, according to Renewables International.

      In the first quarter of 2014, renewable energy sources met a record 27 percent of the country’s electricity demand, thanks to additional installations and favorable weather. “Renewable generators produced 40.2 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, up from 35.7 billion kilowatt-hours in the same period last year,” Bloomberg reported. Much of the country’s renewable energy growth has occurred in the past decade and, as a point of comparison, Germany’s 27 percent is double the approximately 13 percent of U.S. electricity supply powered by renewables as of November 2013.

      Observers say the records will keep coming as Germany continues its Energiewende, or energy transformation, which aims to power the country almost entirely on renewable sources by 2050.

      “Once again, it was demonstrated that a modern electricity system such as the German one can already accept large penetration rates of variable but predictable renewable energy sources such as wind and solar PV power,” said Bernard Chabot, a renewable energy consultant based in France, via email. “In fact there are no technical and economic obstacles to go first to 20 percent of annual electricity demand penetration rate from a combination of those two technologies, then 50 percent and beyond by combining them with other renewables and energy efficiency measures and some progressive storage solutions at a modest level.”
