COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Barack Obama, the Dumbest President Yet

Apparently, a lot of people consider President Obama to be bumblingly inarticulate. "The guy can't talk his way out of a paper bag!" a reader wrote to me recently. "Sarah Palin is a brilliant speaker. It's the president whose sentences are undiagrammable," said another in response to a column I wrote about Palin. It's not just my readers, nor is it exclusively conservatives, who hold this view. A Google search of "does Obama have a speech impediment" turns up several pages of discussion among the president's supporters and critics alike.Admittedly, the president is given to a lot of pauses, "uhs" and sputtering starts to his sentences. As polished as he often is before large crowds (where the adjective "soaring" is often applied to his speeches), his impromptu speaking frequently calls to mind a doctoral candidate delivering a wobbly dissertation defense.

But consider this: It's not that Obama can't speak clearly. It's that he employs the intellectual stammer. Not to be confused with a stutter, which the president decidedly does not have, the intellectual stammer signals a brain that is moving so fast that the mouth can't keep up. The stammer is commonly found among university professors, characters in Woody Allen movies and public thinkers of the sort that might appear on C-SPAN but not CNN. If you're a member or a fan of that subset, chances are the president's stammer doesn't bother you; in fact, you might even love him for it (he sounds just like your grad school roommate, especially when he drank too much Scotch and attempted to expound on the Hegelian dialectic!).

  5. I'm listening to bozo brain right now. He usually ends his sentences on a little up beat. I think the prompter has a little up sign on it.

  9. I hardly run a blog. I do this as a hobby of which I have few others. I am a manufacturer and an industrial artist. I have created jobs for over thirty years. Obama cannot make that claim. He has never created a private sector job. He has no clue as to how it is done. I have worked for all that I have. Obama is a product of white guilt and affirmative action. He was given everything and I have been given nothing other than smart loving parents.

Ultimately, the choice for president is binary. It is usually a selection of the least objectionable.

As to Palin's qualifications being based on 100% support for Israel. I prefer American presidents that have 100% support for the United States, then America, and look askance at all other powers that want to drag the US into their problems. I look at Israel as I look at people that choose to live in a flood plain or on the coast. They know the risks. They take them. They win or they lose. Why should I have to support them when their risk goes wrong?

Israel is a creation of the survivors of European murder, perfidy and guilt. The European propensity for murdering their neighbors has nothing to do with the USA.

"Sarah Palin is a brilliant speaker...

    Dumb and Dumber.

Last poll I saw (mid-May) Palin favorability 25%, Palin unfavorability 53%. This down from approximately 45%/45% at the beginning of 2009.

As I've said before, with most politicians (or faux politicians) the longer the US public has to see them, the less they like them.

If Palin is actually planning on running for office, her big mistake was overexposure.

Open to both sexes, some of these north Idaho ladies know a thing or two. On my last trip to Boise we stopped by the Salmon and a young lady had just caught a steelhead and asked me to take her picture, which I did. She was from McCall, an outdoors sort of girl, and a nice looker.

He is the best of men, a manly guardian, dedicated to his new task, to keep his herd in whole. He has heard the gunfire in Detroit, and retreated, sensible. On his I phone he asks "Bob" for advice, and "Bob" responds, when the cows are silent, then beware.

  22. Here is the position of the front running Republican on "Global Warming" and his policy to end the human impact upon the atmosphere.

“I don’t speak for the scientific community, of course,’’ Romney said. “But I believe the world’s getting warmer. I can’t prove that, but I believe based on what I read that the world is getting warmer. And number two, I believe that humans contribute to that . . . so I think it’s important for us to reduce our emissions of pollutants and greenhouse gases that may well be significant contributors to the climate change and the global warming that you’re seeing.’’

Romney has made clear that he opposes cap-and-trade, a system that would combat climate change by limiting total emissions and forcing polluters to pay for the greenhouse gases they produce. Instead, he said yesterday, he wants to wean the country from its dependence on foreign oil by seeking alternative sources of energy, and he said Americans should do more to conserve.

“I’m told that we use almost twice as much energy per person as does a European, and more like three times as much energy as does a Japanese citizen,’’ Romney said. “We can do a lot better.’’

  23. Someone took offense to my previous post on Costa Rica. Let me be clear. I do not dislike Costa Rica, but I know what I am dealing with and those that visit there with stars in their eyes expecting paradise better wake up.

    Dude.

Costa Rica has more murders per hundred thousand inhabitants than Iraq, Syria, Palestine and Zimbabwe

Costa Rica has a homicide rate twice the United States.

The amount of people victimized by crime is startling. The police are corrupt and inept. I have never had a dealing with a Costa Rican cop that I could not bribe.

You will find few houses where there are not iron gates and or barbed wire. Thievery is rampant. Car break-ins, kidnappings and house invasions are not unusual. The house invasions target foreigners.

I drive a heavy Land Cruiser and have twice been targeted for assault. I also am armed and use evasive action and am not afraid of putting a dent or two in my car or others when assaulted.

The beaches at Limon are particularly dangerous for woman because of predatory and repeat sexual offenders.

Costa Rican propaganda is that it is a safe paradise and thousands of tourists naively buy it. It is not the worse place in the World, but you better know what you are dealing with.

  24. I may also add that the courts in Costa Rica are inept and a disgrace. Costa Rica is one of the few places on the planet where an accused felon can make a statement in court and not be cross-examined by the counsel for the offended party.

    September 2009:

There was an Armed Robbery on a Bus from Tortuguero to Cariari at about 1:20 PM local time on Wednesday September 16.

I was on a public bus for the hour-long drive from the port at Tortuguero, Costa Rica, to Cariari, another small town that serves as a connection point for buses to San Jose.

As we came around a turn in the road, I heard what sounded like a balloon pop from the front area of the bus. This sound was followed by several more popping noises and the din of men shouting, and then the bus came to a sudden halt.

Suddenly, five men wearing ski masks and three carrying machine guns, and one each carrying a pistol and a knife boarded the bus and demanded money from the passengers. They also removed certain bags from the bus, including my daypack. One passenger resisted, and the bandits hit him in the head with a gun, but otherwise no one was seriously injured.
When the bandits were through with their work, they fired several more shots into the air as they escaped into the banana fields. The entire incident lasted about five minutes. The bus then continued for another 20 minutes or so until we found a roadside establishment and phoned the police.

The police in Cariari were useless, and sent us to the OIJ office in Guapiles, where they took a report, but did not even ask us for contact information.

Some locals on the bus suspected that the driver was a con-conspirator and was acting suspicious.

Monteverde massacre stuns nation, failed bank robbery leaves 9 dead, 17 injured
Posted: Friday, March 11, 2005 - By Robert Goodier
This usually peaceful, tourist-filled town turned into the site of one of the most tragic hostage situations in the country’s recent history this week, as nine people were killed and 17 injured during a failed bank robbery.

The bloody standoff at Banco Nacional began Tuesday afternoon and ended 28 hours later when the last assailant, Erly Hurtado, a Nicaraguan in his mid-20s, surrendered to police. Among the killed are Mario López, a Red Cross worker who was in the bank as a client, and officer Oscar Quesada, 44, who worked for the police special intervention unit.

Five other bank employees and clients were killed, as well as two of the assailants.“WE were waiting in line to do a transaction and I looked at the door. A guy was saying ‘alarma, alarma,’ and the door guard looked scared. There was lots and lots and lots of gunfire,” said Dorothy, a U.S. citizen who was in the bank during the failed robbery attempt and told the The Tico Times she preferred not to use her last name.

“Immediately when we saw the guns we dove on the floor and didn’t look around,” she continued. “We heard gunshots, a lot of gunshots. Workers and clients were killed.”

While the hostages inside the bank lived the nightmare, Costa Ricans around the country clung to live TV news coverage to watch the drama unfold in this rural community, renowned for its conservation efforts and cloud forest. Despite its characteristic peacefulness, this was the third attempt to rob the town’s only bank in the past 10 years – the others were June 14,1995, and Jan. 20, 1998 – and the second time people carrying out the assault were killed, according to Roberto Méndez, director of security for Banco Nacional…

Bank Robbery Results in Sidewalk Shootout

Authorities recovered ¢8 million in Costa Rica colones (CRC) and $3,000 in U.S. dollars (USD) for a grand total of $18,800 USD from a daytime bank robbery of the Banco Crédito Agrícola branch in Goicoechea, at the Guadalupe and Moravia intersection just outside of the San José metropolitan area.

According the Costa Rica Spanish newspaper La Nación, at approximately 11:00 a.m. two thieves posing as customers, entered the bank and hit the guard on the head with the butt of a gun.

The two assailants gathered money for several minutes while accomplices waited outside the bank.

A Fuerza Pública police patrol was alerted to the robbery and gave chase to the two primary suspects. Within 400 meters (438 yards) of the bank building police shot one subject three times; twice in the abdomen and once in an ankle.

The wounded man along with the other primary suspect were taken into custody along with a black bag containing the approximately $18,800 and at least one handgun.

Other suspects fled the scene; two on motorcycles and possibly two individuals in a vehicle.

Rob A Bank, Shoot It Out With Police, Go Home

Everything is a little different in Costa Rica and apparently getting caught robbing a bank is little more than the nuisance of being hauled off to jail and sitting through a bail hearing before being released in time to go home for dinner … or to commit more crimes because the first one didn’t result in any cash.

According to InsideCostaRica.com three men were preliminarily arrested for the Banco Crédito Agrícola robbery attempt and a judge initially ordered these suspects to four months preventative jail detention pending further prosecution proceedings.

However, defense lawyers appealed the detention due to a technical issue with hearing notices and approximately six hours later all three suspects were released.
