COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Hugo Chavez, Bomber Pilot, Long Overdue for a Dirt Nap

And after Hugo got out of the flight simulator he decided to:

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuela's socialist President Hugo Chavez on Wednesday ordered the U.S. ambassador out of the oil exporting country in an escalating battle between Washington and Latin America's left-wing leaders.

"Go to hell, s--- yankees, we are a dignified people, go to hell 100 times," Chavez shouted at a political rally to thousands of roaring supporters.

Chavez's move came a day after Bolivian President Evo Morales, one of his closest allies, expelled the U.S. ambassador in La Paz on accusations that he was instigating violent protests in the Andean nation.

The United States responded on Thursday by ejecting Bolivia's ambassador in Washington, and Chavez said the United States should send back Venezuela's top envoy straight away.

"We will send an ambassador when there is a new government in the United States, a government that respects the people of Latin America," he said.

Eight people were killed as violent anti-government protests flared in Bolivia on Thursday, creating havoc in its crucial natural gas industry.

Earlier in the day, Chavez spiced up a nascent campaign for Venezuela's tough local elections in November with allegations that retired military officers were planning to assassinate him. He also ordered a reduction of U.S. flights to Venezuela and pledged to support Morales in the event of a coup against him.

Meanwhile, here is a little glimpse of the real Venezuela and the trash they are exporting into the rest of Latin America:

  1. They're not Jihadists, so no worries.

Or so went the storyline at the BC, those many moons ago.

The Tu-160 is the heaviest combat aircraft ever built.[1] The aircraft is similar to the B-1 Lancer, but 430mph faster than the Lancer, and possesses greater range and payload capabilities. Produced 10 years later than the B-1, it flies at 10,000 ft lower maximum altitude.

Introduced in 1987, it was the last Soviet strategic bomber designed, but production of the aircraft still continues, with at least 16 currently in service with the Russian Air Force.

Its pilots call the Tu-160 the “White Swan”, due to the surprising maneuverability and antiflash white finish of the aircraft[2] and has the NATO reporting name of Blackjack.

The Tu-16 is capable of carrying the strategic cruise missile Kh-55MS, which is known in the West by the NATO designation and codename AS-15 Kent. Up to twelve Kh-55MS missiles can be carried, six in each bay. The Kh-55MS is propelled by a turbofan engine. The maximum range is 3,000km, and it is armed with a 200-kiloton nuclear warhead.

The weapons bays are also fitted with launchers for the Kh-15P, which has the NATO designation and codename AS-16 Kickback. The Kh-15P Kickback has solid rocket fuel propulsion, which gives a range up to 200km. The Kickback can be fitted with a conventional 250kg warhead or a nuclear warhead. The aircraft is also capable of carrying a range of aerial bombs with a total weight up to 40 tons.

  9. No, the B-1B carries about 2/3s the payload of the B-52H, that is one reason 35 B-1Bs (along with the high operating costs of the Bone) were selected for storage at DM.

    Quoting DL021 (Reply 2):
I think you were looking the specs for the B-1A. It was rated to be able to carry somewhere around 115k lbs counting both internal and external loads.

I believe that the B-1B can carry around 40-45k lbs payload.

    That is correct.

BTW, the B-2A can carry up to a 60,000lb payload. The B-52H carries up to 70,000lbs.

    hdgreene:

This is Off Topic but I watched the first installment of Gov. Palin’s interview. It was quite good.

First, he asked her if she is prepared to be President (she’s running for Vice President — people might be getting confused on that point). She said quite forthrightly “Yes.” She gave this answer even though Bill Clinton has assured us that absolutely no one is ready for that job. She should have given Charlie the same answer Barack Obama gave to that question back when he announced for the top spot. “You asking me if I’m ready? Are you kidding. Me? Ready? I only been in the Senate for two years. Of course I am not friggin ready to be President, you idiot. No. I’ll be ready after I’ve run for President for two years and after I’ve served my first term.” I remember him saying this because we don’t often see such humility.

After Gov. Palin said she was ready– if not down right eager — for the job, I thought I heard Charlie Gibson say “Doesn’t that take Hubris.” I think that’s a cheese sauce the French put on roast beef. No. Wait. Hubris means excessive pride or self confidence. To say you are ready to do a job when Gibson thinks your not? Was he referring to his hubris or her hubris or was he just fulfilling the role of the Greek chorus? I could not tell. In any case she just talked right over him which was just as well. Unfortunately, he did get some words in.

He asked her if she agreed with the Bush Doctrine. The Bush Doctrine is where you say “screw the French” and invade other countries. But Gov. Palin didn’t want to put it in those words, so she put it in other ones. And if Israel bombs Iran? he asked. Hey, you stand by your freinds, she replied. I’m paraphrasing. But I do want the total lack of nuance to come through. I think the mullahs just ran for their prayer beads.

Then there were a couple of those obligatory “so you got a direct line to God: what did he tell you the last time you had lunch together” type questions. I thought she handled them well. “Charlie, I don’t know what God has planned–”

She just let it rip. I think a dozen members of our foreign policy establishment had strokes. This interview will cause more controversy than her hairdo. OK, maybe not more but certainly almost as much.

Neuroanatomist Jill Bolte Taylor had an opportunity few of us would wish for: a massive stroke. What she learned from it about the right and left brains seems relevant to all of us, and I'm passing it on here.

Her experience also sounds loosely parallel to two experiences I have had, and it has echoes in my experience of making art and being affected by it.

In my case, after a week at a meditation retreat, the death by suicide of a close friend, and two weeks with pneumonia, I had the sense Bolte describes, for about 45 minutes, of being one with the mass of particles and energy that make up the cosmos. It was as if everything looked like a pointillist painting, and so did I, though things still looked literally the same. Nevertheless, I felt in a continuum with the sand, the surf, the wind, the dogs running on the beach, the mist in the air, the sunlight. The sensation lasted until I'd had several brief encounters with people on the beach, and then I returned, mostly, to my more conventional view of reality. The other was my sense, during a near-death experience, of being bodiless and identityless and being utterly at peace in the threshhold between living and dying.

What transcendent, "right brain" experiences have you had? I'd like to hear about them, either here or in the Art, Healing, and Transformation group.

When he asked her, slowly and solemnly to “look the country in the eye” and say whether she truly felt qualified to be vice president and possibly commander in chief, Mr. Gibson seemed to expect Ms. Palin to express at least a moment of humility and self-doubt. Ms. Palin said she had no doubts when asked to be Senator John McCain’s running mate. (“I answered him yes because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can’t blink. You have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission, the mission that we’re on, reform of this country and victory in the war, you can’t blink.”) Mr. Gibson suggested that her brash, unwavering confidence sounded like “hubris.”

The McCain campaign had better take on the "Pray for" quote and say that those same words are said every Sunday in churches across nation. Every church prays that we are on the right side of "good" and we pray for all of our leaders that God gives them the wisdom and judgement to make good decisions.

  80. They all say they are, doug.
But the only one that would act on the matter is McCain.

When one of the Europeans say no, the Dems will stop, Maverick will forge a "Special Relationship" with both countries.

As he wanted to do in Kosovo, with the KLA. Those drug smuggling, white slaving Islamists.

He'd rather start a war than lose one.

  82. Both Georgia and Ukraine were put up for NATO by US, it is a agreed to position for the Federals.

The Dems do not want to appear "soft". But the will not push hard for membership.

  86. Dr. Bill made a statement that if all the folks in California used those piggy tailed light bulbs, instead of the incandescent, they could shut down four or five coal burning plants. Puts it in persepective.

I do know I can clearly tell the difference in my electric bills.

  87. The Pirate, Henry Morgan,
doug, at least to the Spanish.

    Raided the Spanish colonies

Took Panama City, while it burned, with a motley crew of buccaneers.

To the Brits, Sir Henry Morgan, privateer and deputy Governor of Jamaica.

  88. Also said it's been the US Senate, not the House, much less the Bush Administration, which has introduced bills each year for drilling and nuclear, that has screwed the pooch each year. Mostly Senate democrats beholden to Sierra Club types. Think California, Washington etc.

  91. The only Nation he built was his own.

Burned the cities in most of the others.

at the end of June he was already off the great harbour of Puerto Bello on the northern coast of the Isthmus of Panama. In a daring attack he took the town, held its citizens to ransom and beat off 3,000 strong troops coming to the aid of the town from the city of Panama. Morgan and his men arrived back at Port Royal with 250,000 pieces of eight along other booty in the hulls of their ships. This amounted to an absolute fortune !

Google doesn't want to get on Keith Olbermann's crap list. So they ignore anything with any possible non-Progressive slant.

  94. al-Bob,
"Conservatives" make such asses of themselves when they deny any benefit, and assert our right to waste as much as we want.

It doesn't make any difference how hard we push. EU didn't want them before. EU *REALLY* doesn't want them now. We can't force them to do our bidding.

Forging a "special relationship" with Georgia isn't nearly as bad an idea as that of kicking Russia out of the G8 - which is about as bad as they get.

  97. I think I heard this right, Bill said nuclear power over time taking everything into consideration was 2 cents a kilowatt hour, less than coal. Way less than natural gas.

  101. My grandmother’s passing on September 11, 2008, reinforces the most important lesson of 9-11…
“Be on guard and be aware.”

"How ironic that I would lose my maternal grandmother (92 years old) on the 7th anniversary of the attacks of September 11.
My maternal grandmother, Rosalia Isaac, is the most heroic person I ever knew.

My grandmother was one of the last Jewish people on earth who came face to face with Joseph Mengela, and lives to tell about it.

In addition to surviving one of humanity’s most disgusting killing machines at Auschwitz, she also survived a Nazi death march and near starvation before being liberated from the Bergen Belsen Concentration Camp..."
