COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

    Let’s Just Kill ‘Homeland Security’

When it’s not making us take our shoes off, it’s trampling our civil liberties and ‘building’ centers that don’t exist. Enough already.

    Are you nervous, America?

If nothing happens before Friday, the mighty Department of Homeland Security (DHS)—every bit as much a WTF legacy of George W. Bush as those surreal White House Christmas videos that featured Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson talking to Barney “the First Dog” like the Son of Sam killer—will lose its funding due to a budget fight between congressional Republicans and President Barack Obama.

And when DHS funding ends, then…well, nothing much, actually, it turns out.

Without funding, about 30,000 “non-essential” DHS employees will be told not to show up for work. The other 210,000 or so workers who are considered “essential” and “exempt” will still have to punch the clock, although most of them won’t get paid until after the budget stalemate is ended. Not optimal, but not the worst outcome, either.

DHS oversees almost two dozen agencies and groups, including the Coast Guard, Customs and Border Patrol, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), immigration processing and enforcement, the Secret Service, and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), the brave folks responsible for an endless series of junk-touching, drug-stealing, and kiddie-porn scandals.

Given all those fearsome responsibilities, you’d figure Barack Obama would be sweating gravy over even a partial shutdown of DHS. Instead, last week he stressed not the “security” part of the department’s functioning, but all the dollars its workers spend in a congressional district near you...

Created in 2002 in the mad crush of panic, paranoia, and patriotic pants-wetting after the 9/11 attacks, DHS has always been a stupid idea. Even at the time, creating a new cabinet-level department responsible for 22 different agencies and services was suspect. Exactly how was adding a new layer of bureaucracy supposed to make us safer (and that’s leaving aside the question of just what the hell “homeland security” actually means)? DHS leaders answer to no fewer than 90 congressional committees and subcommittees that oversee the department’s various functions. Good luck with all that.

But don’t feel sorry for the shmoes running DHS. Over the last decade, the budget for DHS has doubled (to $54 billion in 2014) even as its reputation for general mismanagement, wasteful spending, and civil liberties abuses flourishes. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) routinely lists DHS on its “high risk” list of badly run outfits and surveys of federal workers have concluded “that DHS is the worst department to work for in the government,” writes Chris Edwards of the Cato Institute. He also notes, a “Washington Post investigation found that many DHS employees say they have ‘a dysfunctional work environment’ with ‘abysmal morale.’” Somewhere, the Postmaster General is pumping his fist.

It only gets worse when you look at the sheer amount of junk DHS spends money on. The Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), for instance, built 21 homes for agents in a remote part of Arizona. The price tag was $680,000 per house in a part of the country where the average home sold for less than $90,000. When the TSA isn’t hiring defrocked, child-molesting priests, Edwards notes that it is shelling out hundreds of millions of dollars on radiation detectors for cargo containers that don’t work and full-body airport scanners without bothering to “perform a cost-benefit analysis…before rolling them out nationwide.”

Nonetheless, it is heartbreaking to see an American administration that is more concerned about silencing Israel than protecting it. Heartbreaking, but also deeply worrisome, because the tactics that Obama has been employing, from leaking information to embarrass Israel to bitterly censuring the head of government of the Jewish state, could easily open the door to a resurgence of anti-Semitism.

  6. (Reuters) - Kurdish forces dealt a blow to Islamic State by capturing an important town on Friday in the latest stage of a powerful offensive in northeast Syria, a Kurdish militia spokesman said.

Islamic State has been forced into retreat across parts of the strategic region, a land bridge between territory it controls in Syria and Iraq, even as its fighters have mounted new raids this week on Assyrian Christian villages, abducting more than 200 people.

The capture of Tel Hamis was announced by the Kurdish YPG militia and confirmed by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the country's civil war.

"The flag is flying over Tel Hamis. We are now combing the city for terrorists and mines," militia spokesman Redur Xelil told Reuters.

  7. The Islamic State ‘caliphate’ is in danger of losing its main supply route

If Islamic State convoys can no longer follow the main highway to Raqqa, which crosses the border at the al-Hasakah district in Syria, they could be forced to travel to the next-closest crossing they control, located at al-Qaim, 260 miles away.

But coalition warplanes have been raiding the al-Qaim area.

The corridor from Mosul into Syria isn’t the only Islamic State supply line that is under pressure. In Iraq, a separate route linking the western town of Haditha with the oil-producing town of Baiji and continuing north to Mosul could now also prove dangerous for the group as Iraqi security forces make gains in these areas.

If the fighters in Mosul can’t stay connected to Islamic State territory in Syria, “they will lose their claim that they have a state,” Hashemi said.

“They wanted to destroy the [Iraq-Syria] border,” he said. But if they can’t move back and forth between their state’s two most important regions, “they will have failed to destroy it.”

  9. Quirk, the post you put up should be in context.

    Barack Obama is running scared.

In advance of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to Congress next week about the growing threat of a nuclear Iran, the normally placid president of the United States is suddenly breaking out into a political sweat.

One by one, Obama has been dispatching his minions to deride, denounce and disparage a speech that hasn’t even been given yet. Indeed, President Obama is doing everything in his power to attack the message and the messenger in an attempt to salvage a possible deal with the Iranian ayatollahs.

But in doing so, he runs the risk of stirring up a menace no less frightful: the demon of anti-Semitism. After all, the harshness of Obama’s response could very well lead some Americans down the well-trod path of anti-Zionism and Jew-hatred.

Take for example the remarks made by National Security Advisor Susan Rice. Speaking to journalist Charlie Rose on Tuesday night, Rice declared that Netanyahu’s acceptance of the invitation to Congress is “destructive of the fabric of the relationship” between Israel and the US. Rice’s comment is far more revealing than perhaps she intended, for by employing such extreme language, she inadvertently disclosed just how nervous the White House is about the possible impact of the premier’s speech.

Moreover, Rice’s remarks are in direct contradiction to those made just one month ago by White House chief of staff Denis McDonough, who told NBC’s Meet the Press on January 25 that the US relationship with Israel is “focused on a shared series of threats, but also on a shared series of values that one particular incident is not going to inform overwhelmingly.”

This is a sure sign that not only does the Obama administration lack message discipline, but can barely conceal its unmitigated hostility toward the Jewish state and the man who leads it. Indeed, to decry a speech by a close US ally to the elected representatives of the American people as “destructive” is not only offensive, but it crosses the lines of diplomatic decency. It is the kind of remark that Israel’s enemies will be more than happy to exploit in an effort to paint the Jewish state, and Jews themselves, as undermining America.

The administration’s enmity was further on display when Secretary of State John Kerry took part in a congressional hearing on Tuesday regarding the State Department budget, where he made some thinly-veiled remarks that were sharply critical of Netanyahu.

“Anyone running around right now,” Kerry said, “jumping to say we don’t like the deal, or this or that, doesn’t know what the deal is. There is no deal yet.” Even for someone who once boasted that “I actually did vote for the $87 billion [in funding for US troops] before I voted against it,” this latest statement is remarkably obtuse. In effect, Kerry is saying that Netanyahu shouldn’t criticize a deal with Iran until it is complete, neglecting to mention that at that point it would be too late.

But the comment also has a potentially chilling undertone to it. Does Kerry mean to suggest that American Jewry and pro-Israel organizations should keep silent and not decry the reported terms of the potential nuclear deal with Iran?

    1. Fortunately, the Obama administration’s full-court press against Netanyahu’s appearance in Congress doesn’t seem to be working, at least for now. In a poll conducted last week by McLaughlin & Associates, 59 percent of Americans surveyed said they support Netanyahu speaking to Congress, while just 23% oppose it. This demonstrates that a vast majority of the American public is not taking Obama’s bait, and wants to hear what the Israeli premier has to say.

      Delete
    2. If Obama is miffed that Netanyahu will be speaking to Congress, then why not first listen to what the premier has to say and then respond to it? Why turn up the heat now, exacerbate bilateral tensions and deploy such sharp rhetoric?

To be sure, anti-Semitism in the United States has been steadily declining over the past decade, with just 9% of Americans reportedly holding anti-Semitic views according to the ADL. But their surveys also show that 31% of American adults believe that “Jews are more loyal to Israel” than to America or the countries in which they live. By heightening the fuss and worsening the rift with Israel over a crucial, existential issue such as Iran’s nuclear program, Obama is fanning some flames that may prove difficult to extinguish. And that, most assuredly, is in nobody’s interest.

IG: 'Potential criminal activity' in missing Lerner emails
    By Rick Moran

The IRS inspector general has opened a criminal investigation into the disappearance of tens of thousands of emails belonging to former IRS manager Lois Lerner. The IRS claimed the emails were lost when Lerner's computer crashed. But the IG investigation shows that dozens of tapes containing the emails have been discovered with the recovery of about 32,000 emails so far.

    Washington Times:

Investigators have already scoured 744 backup tapes and gleaned 32,774 unique emails, but just two weeks ago they found an additional 424 tapes that could contain even more Lerner emails, Deputy Inspector General Timothy P. Camus told the House Oversight Committee in a rare late-night hearing meant to look into the status of the investigation.

“There is potential criminal activity,” Mr. Camus said............

  17. Five ways Iran is preferable to Israel:

    1. Iran does not have a nuclear bomb and is signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Despite what is constantly alleged in the Western press and by Western politicians, there is no evidence that Iran has an active nuclear weapons program; and, the theocratic Supreme Leader has forbidden making, stockpiling and using nuclear weapons. In contrast, Israel refused to sign the NPT and has several hundred nuclear warheads, which it constructed stealthily, including through acts of espionage and smuggling in the United States, and against the wishes of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson. And, its leaders have more than once implied they are ready to use it; then prime minister Ariel Sharon alarmed George W. Bush when he intimated that he’d nuke Baghdad if Saddam tried to send SCUDs tipped with gas on Israel.

    2. Iran has not launched an aggressive war since 1775, when Karim Khan Zand sent an army against Omar Pasha in Basra in neighboring Iraq. Though, whether that was a response to Ottoman provocations or actually an aggressive act could be argued. Who started a war is always a matter of interpretation to some extent, but if we define it as firing the first shot, then Israel started wars in 1956, 1967 and 1982. If the principle of proportionality of response is entered into the equation, then you’d have to say 2006, 2009, and 2014 were also predominantly an Israeli decision.

    3. Modern Iran has not occupied the territory of its neighbors. Iraq attacked Iran in 1980 in a bloodthirsty act of aggression. Iran fought off Iraq 1980-1988. But after the hostilities ended, Tehran did not try to take and hold Iraqi territory in revenge. The UN Charter of 1945 forbids countries to annex the land of their neighbors through warfare. In contrast, Israel occupies 4 million stateless Palestinians, who are treated as any subjected, colonized population would be. Nor is there any prospect in my lifetime of those Palestinians gaining citizenship in their own state; they are going to live and die humiliated and colonized and often expropriated.

    4. All the people ruled over by Iran can vote in national elections and even Iranian Jews have a representative in parliament. In contrast, of the 12 million people ruled by Israel, 4 million of them have no vote in Israeli politics, which is the politics that actually rules them.
    5. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is not trying to undermine the Obama administration’s negotiations with his country, aimed at making sure Iran can have nuclear electricity plants but that it cannot develop a weapon.

Iran’s government is not one I agree with on almost anything, and it is dictatorial and puritanical. I wish Iranians would get past it and join the world’s democracies. Israel is better than Iran in most regards– for Israeli citizens it has more of a rule of law and more personal liberties. But just to be fair, there are some ways Iran’s policies are better than Israel’s.

Quirk, the post you put up should be in context.

What the hell are you talking about, WiO?

Here is the post I put up,

Nonetheless, it is heartbreaking to see an American administration that is more concerned about silencing Israel than protecting it. Heartbreaking, but also deeply worrisome, because the tactics that Obama has been employing, from leaking information to embarrass Israel to bitterly censuring the head of government of the Jewish state, could easily open the door to a resurgence of anti-Semitism.

Here is the title of the article.

Fundamentally Freund: Is Obama stirring up anti-Semitism?

The asshole Freund is suggesting Obama is stirring up anti-Semitism with his actions. The ‘context’ you put up (the entire article) is merely a list of the excuses that he makes for making the claim. The irony of it all is that this is definitely the ultimate case of the pot calling the kettle not only black (no pun intended) but also anti-Semetic.

Every abuse the author claims against Bibi and his administration has been trumped royally by those on the other side and by Bibi himself. The examples are numerous just in the last six months or so. You applaud it when the Israelis do it and denounce it when the administration does it.

Bibi is an arrogant self-important ass and his contempt for the president, Congress, and the people of the US is reflected in his every action from lecturing publically lecturing Obama in the White House to that video of him in 2001 when he thought the cameras were off.

This is an argument about policy differences. It is being waged between two guys who don’t like each other. Rather than leave it at that, the author argues that the argument and how it is being conducted will lead to a new wave of anti-Semitism. That is the context.

As I noted above, I saw it coming. It was only a matter of time.

  29. BEIRUT (AP) — Backed by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes, Kurdish fighters fought their way Friday into a northeastern Syrian town that was a key stronghold of Islamic State militants, only days after the group abducted dozens of Christians in the volatile region, Syrian activists and Kurdish officials said.

The victory marks a second blow to the extremist IS group in a month, highlighting the growing role of Syria's Kurds as the most effective fighting force against the Islamic State. In January, Kurdish forces drove IS militants from the town of Kobani near the Turkish border after a months-long fight, dealing a very public defeat to the extremists.

But it is also tempered by this week's horrific abductions by IS militants of more than 220 Christian Assyrians in the same area, along the fluid and fast shifting front line in Syria.

The town of Tel Hamees in Syria's northeastern Hassakeh province is strategically important because it links territory controlled by IS in Syria and Iraq.

The province, which borders Turkey and Iraq, is predominantly Kurdish but also has populations of Arabs and predominantly Christian Assyrians and Armenians.

"We are now combing the town for explosives and remnants of terrorists," said Redur Khalil, a spokesman for the Kurdish fighters, known as the People's Protection Units or YPG.

"We are now combing the town for explosives and remnants of terrorists," said Redur Khalil, a spokesman for the Kurdish fighters, known as the People's Protection Units or YPG.

Speaking to The Associated Press over the phone from the outskirts of Tel Hamees, he said the town was a key stronghold for IS and had served as a staging ground for the group's operations in the Iraqi town of Sinjar and the city of Mosul.

Dislodging the group from Tel Hamees cuts a supply line from Iraq, Khalil said.

The push on the town's eastern and southeastern edges came after the Kurdish troops, working with Christian militias and Arab tribal fighters, seized dozens of nearby villages from the Islamic State extremists. U.S.-led coalition forces provided cover, striking at IS infrastructure in the region for days.

More than 200 militants died in the fighting, and at least eight troops fighting alongside YPG, including an Australian national who has been with the Kurdish forces for three months, Khalil said.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists inside Syria, said IS defenses collapsed and the militants fled after Kurdish fighters broke into Tel Hamees from the east and south.

    1. The Observatory's director, Rami Abdurrahman, said the Kurds seized more than 100 villages around Tel Hamees and that ground battles and air strikes around the town have killed at least 175 IS fighters in the past several days in some of the latest losses for the group since Kobani.

Some 15,000 villagers have fled the fighting, he added.

The Kurds in Syria and Iraq have emerged as the most effective force fighting IS, which controls about a third of Iraq and Syria — much of it captured in a lighting blitz last spring and summer, as Iraqi army forces melted away in the face of the militant onslaught.

In Syria, they have teamed up with moderate rebels for territorial gains against the group.

Elsewhere in Hassakeh, IS fighters this week captured dozens of mostly Christian villages to the west of Tel Hamees — taking at least 220 Assyrian Christians hostage, according to activists. The fate of those abducted was

Majority of White People Don’t Believe Obama Loves America
February 25, 2015 by Daniel Greenfield 100 Comments
Print This Post Print This Post

The poll numbers are narrow, but the results are still stunning.

White people say by 42% to 41% that Obama does not love America. Now the results are within the margin of error, but if you believe the media, they should never have been this close.

Obama’s favorables among whites are down to around a third.

But Obama’s patriotism isn’t particularly convincing even to Hispanics, only 52 percent of whom believe that Obama loves America.

How would Obama supporters care to explain that? Clearly he isn’t projecting his love too convincingly for anyone except black voters, many of whom continue to blindly support him.

(Blacks polled say that they love America by 78%, Whites by 85%, Hispanics by 87%, a higher number than whites. They are however less likely than whites to think that America is exceptional. Those are, despite Obama’s reign, good numbers. They however drop sharply among millenials among 71 percent of whom do.)

Now how much of an outlier is Giuliani?

Only 11% of Republicans believe that Obama loves America. 85% of Democrats do (which raises questions about why the other 15 percent are Dems). 69% of Republicans do not believe that Obama loves America.

    It’s that simple...........

  34. Senior Iranian cleric with close ties to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed on Friday that "we will raise the flag of Islam over the White House" in response to the killing of Hezbollah and Revolutionary Guards operatives on the Golan Heights last month.

Among the Hezbollah operatives killed in the strike was Jihad Mougniyeh, the son of Hezbollah's former military leader, Imad Moughniyeh, who according to Western intelligence sources, was in the midst of setting up a terrorism base on the Syrian Golan and plotting rocket attacks, bombings, anti-tank missile strikes, and cross-border infiltrations against Israel.

You haven't been anti-semitic per se though you are beginning to badly misread the actual situation in Gaza and the West Bank. I suggest you wouldn't find them any better neighbors than the Israelis if they were in Mississippi.

Yes you did pile onto the Hindus a bit.

Hindus or India had never been talked about here in my memory before I mentioned my Niece.

But all of a sudden there was a big flurry of negative talk about Hindus and India.

By the way they are not polytheists, even though there is much talk of the 'gods'.

They are the old perennial philosophy. Or call them Schopenhaerians if you wish. Mormons are more properly called polytheists than Hindus.

Polytheism has a bad reputation and I am uncertain why that is so.

I agree you are an equal opportunity critic when it comes to the religions, though.

You are terribly wrong if the implication is that they are all somehow the same.

    1. There was something about Hindus eating cats, too, IIRC.

This seemed absurd to me as my Niece loves cats and would certainly never eat one.

      :)

She would find the idea of eating a cat abhorrent !

And an alligator tail as well......

  41. A Partial Accounting of the Damage Netanyahu Is Doing to Israel
The Israeli prime minister seems willing to undermine his country's relations with the U.S. in order to save his career.

    Jeffrey Goldberg

Bibi is facing an existential threat to his career, and Boehner is staging for him the ultimate campaign rally, 6,000 miles away from home. People I’ve spoken with in Israel who have a sophisticated understanding of current campaign dynamics—the Israeli election is set for March 17—say that a well-delivered, well-received speech (standing ovations in Congress seem very impressive unless you know better) could gain Netanyahu two or three extra seats in the Knesset, which might be what he needs to retain his job. Polls are showing the centrist Zionist Camp party led by Isaac Herzog and Tzipi Livni competing strongly against Netanyahu's Likud party, and there are also hints that traditional Netanyahu voters who have grown tired of him or who are concerned about issues that don’t seem to concern him—Israel’s affordable housing crisis, for one—might move to other right-wing parties, making his task more difficult.

  42. As to the Draft Dodger's claim that the offensive in Mosul has been put off until 2016 ...

No reference and not on any news source of relevance.
Just another delusion fabricated by the bank fraudster.

Richard Mack, Sheriff Who Refused Obamacare, Now Begs Strangers For Cash To Pay Medical Bills

But according to his site, Mack suffered a heart attack in January and his wife began experiencing ill health late last year. Unfortunately, because Mack refused to buy an insurance plan under Obamacare, he is now without any form of health coverage.

Mack has now started an online GoFundMe campaign, soliciting cash from anyone willing to give him some, in order to pay his considerable health expenses.

Mack’s site explains that he and his wife are “self-employed” and therefore have no medical insurance — even though the Obamacare law is designed specifically to allow self-employed Americans to obtain health coverage.

"Since it appears that recovery will take a good deal of time with associated expenses, I struggle to not feel stress – both the stress of thinking about huge hospital and other medical bills as well as regular living expenses while I am unable to work -- and also the stress of not being able to accomplish what I am so passionate about doing for others," Mack wrote in a note on his GoFundMe page. "It is difficult and humbling to say that we need your help, but we do."

So he has raised some $18,000 and some interesting comments at his GoFundMe site

What if you had health insurance? I thought they passed a law a couple years ago so this kind of begging on the internet indignity wouldn't have to happen. Get well soon!

I wish you the very best of luck. Please use my donation to help purchase medical insurance - after all, if begging strangers on the Internet for money doesn't work out, the taxpayers are on the hook for your medical expenses. It's a personal responsibility issue. I'm sure you understand.

So, Robert "Draft Dodger" Peterson, you want to appeal ObamaCare, are you going to donate to help this family, the breadwinner wants to appeal ObamaCare, too. But could not afford health insurance, and was to proud to obey the law.
But not to proud to beg.
