COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  1. Not to forget - Hillary took incoming at the airport.

    Ha ha ha

She is on record saying this at a dozen or so events.

When shown to be lying - she was actually greeting some children - she said she had been 'sleepy' when she said that about the incoming.

She is always sleepy, it seems.

I have witnessed Quirk using the 'sleepy defense' before the Court when on trial for perjury. He played to the female element of the jury on got off, the cad.

    1. And I remember when Quirk said he had been working for the UN River Deltas International Fisheries and Resources Commission about '69. Q had been on them all, the Mississippi, the Nile, the Tigris/Euphrates, the Indus. He was working the Mekong, his team using seine nets to catch shrimp, crab, fish, eels, snails and do categorization and resource management studies. A damned hurricane can in, a real whopper, and bent the trees flat, and raised huge whitecaps, and at the same time his boat came under heavy machine gun fire from the shore - VietCong !

I remember how Q described how he swan dived off the bridge of the ship, large machete between his teeth, to cut the nets away, and how the 50 caliber bullets were raising water spouts all around him.....they escaped just barely, and made for an island in the stream and rode the tempest out.....

Right, you document like Thucydides gave us history.

He noted that when he couldn’t remember a speech, he “put into the mouth of each speaker the sentiments proper to the occasion, expressed as I thought he would be likely to express them, while at the same time I endeavoured, as nearly as I could, to give the general purport of what was actually said.”

  4. Nigeria to postpone elections ahead of Boko Haram offensive

Nigeria’s electoral commission is to postpone presidential and legislative elections for six weeks to give a new multinational force time to secure north-eastern areas under the sway of Boko Haram, an official has said.

Millions could be disenfranchised if the voting went ahead on February 14th while the Islamic extremists hold a large area of the north east and continue the violence that has driven 1.5 million people from their homes.

A major offensive with planes and ground troops from Chad and Nigeria has forced the insurgents from a dozen towns and villages in the past 10 days, and greater military strikes by more countries are planned.

The official said the Independent National Electoral Commission will announce the postponement at a news conference. Officials in President Goodluck Jonathan’s administration had been calling for a postponement, which is opposed by an opposition coalition fielding his chief rival, former military dictator Muhammadu Buhari.

"Body Leads” is apparently a Department of Defense-funded project dedicated to writing studies that no one ever reads (at least not until this week) about the “nonverbal communication” (aka movement) of world leaders. Its first study about Putin, “A Technical Report on the Nature of Movement Patterning, the Brain and Decision Making (with gratitude to Vladimir Putin, The President of Russia For helping us understand ……),” was published in 2008 and prepared by “Body Leads” leader Brenda Connors, an expert in “movement patterns analysis” at the Naval War College.

Analysis of Internet videos, Connors writes, “clearly reveals that the Russian President carries a neurological abnormality … identified by leading neuroscientists as Asperger’s Syndrome, an autistic disorder which affects all of his decisions.” (As of 2013, Asperger’s syndrome is no longer considered a legitimate diagnosis but rather part of the autism spectrum.)...

    >>>Strategic patience smacks of doing nothing and hoping the problem resolves itself or goes away. This certainly isn't going to happen with Islamic State and the problem of Russia is only getting worse.

One thing that's pretty clear in this document is that the president plans to kick the can down the road when it comes to foreign crisis. With less than two years left to serve, it appears that Obama is going to cross his fingers and hope things don't get any worse. There are no new strategies or proposals to make real his goal of defeating Islamic State, or of keeping the Russian bear in a cage. This is a political document designed to keep his critics off his back - nothing more.

This sort of inattentiveness to potential crisis has been a hallmark of this administration since 2009. It's no secret the president would like foreign crisis to go away so he can devote all his energies to transforming America. We all better hope that the world doesn't go to hell in the next two years.<<<

    1. Now think about some of the foreign policy decisions made over the past 40 years: Would be better off if we had done nothing in Iraq? Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos, Syria, Afghanistan, Libya, Kosovo, Panama and Lebanon or are we better off for what we did?

We certainly would have been better off during the Bush 2 era if he had repeated his Air Force career and stayed Awol for eight years.

    3. Second best is the highest Saddam could be placed, in the history of the world.

Among many foreign invasions to which Persia has been subjected in her long history, three more than others have influenced the culture and civilisation of the people of this country. These three invasions were those of Alexander, the Arabs, and the Mongols.

The Mongol invasion is considered the most destructive of all the invasions by the people of Central Asia. The invasion was motivated by three factors : first, material benefit ; second, acquisition of new pastural and agricultural land ; third, revenge. This being the case, the invasion should not have really affected the Iranian society and its culture, for any human action which is based on force, material benefit and temporary success is usually superficial and of short duration. It is only when man’s action is based on his philosophical convictions that the overall effect of his acts leaves a lasting impress.

Despite this fact, the Mongol conquest of Iran left such an effect on the totality of the Iranian society, its economy and culture that today even after seven centuries we can still witness the influence of the Mongol invasion in the country.

THE EFFECT OF THE MONGOL INVASION ON THE COURSE OF IRANIAN HISTORY

The effect of the massacre of the inhabitants of the cities of Iran, the destruction of an urban civilisation, and an advanced rural economy adopted by the invaders were so strong that it took Iran many centuries to recover from this historical calamity. The agricultural economy was replaced by stock-raising which was one of the characteristics of nomadic life. Tribal life became once again the way of life and as a result the central authority collapsed everywhere in the country, In addition to a new ruler the farmers found a new enemy, that is to say, a number of tribes which later gave support to the Safavids, the Afsharids, Zends and the Qajars.

  9. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Thursday positioned himself as a pragmatic, pro-compromise presidential candidate, dismissing 2016 rivals whom he said merely seek to be “critic-in-chief.”

Perry in recent weeks has sought to portray himself as a more moderate, thoughtful contender than he was during his 2012 campaign, when he entered the race as a firebrand conservative. In an appearance before the socially conservative group American Principles Project in Washington, Perry argued that Republicans should nominate someone with a message that goes beyond merely opposing the other side, an apparent swipe at fellow Texan Ted Cruz, a conservative hard-liner.

“We must articulate what we are for,” he said. “And in that respect, as we look to 2016, we must remember we are not electing a critic-in-chief, we are electing a commander-in-chief.”

IMHO I think we know exactly who the Republicans are. The more clarification as to who they are and the more clear notice they get
within the dim ranks of US voters, the better the chances of getting rid of them and can then focus on culling the herd on other side of the aisle.

    1. Lavrov: US escalated Ukraine crisis at every stage, blamed Russia

One of the major sticking points of the crisis so far has been the failure of Kiev to engage in talks with militia leaders in the East of the country. Lavrov is staggered the US, who talked with the Taliban during their invasion of Afghanistan, through channels in Doha, Qatar, is unable to put pressure on Kiev to engage in discussions.

“In the case of Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen and Sudan our partners actively asked governments to enter into dialogue with the opposition, even if they were extremists. However, during the Ukrainian crisis, they act differently, making up excuses and try to justify the use of cluster bombs,” the Russian Foreign Minister said, who was speaking at a security conference in Munich on Saturday.

The issue of the far right’s rise in Ukrainian politics has been swept under the carpet by the US and EU. Some members of the Ukrainian parliament have promoted ideas such as exterminating Russians and Jews. However, these haven’t been reported or caused any alarm in the West, Russia’s foreign minister added.

“Our partners in the West have closed their eyes to everything that the Kiev government has said and done, which includes xenophobia. Some have advocated an ethnically clean Ukraine.”

Jordan vows to completely ‘wipe out’ ISIS

AMMAN, Jordan – The United Arab Emirates said Saturday it ordered a squadron of F-16 fighters to Jordan, which an official said would participate in airstrikes on the Islamic State group after the UAE earlier suspended its involvement.

The UAE fighter jets will participate in airstrikes on Islamic State targets, said a Jordanian official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the issue to journalists.

The UAE announcement, carried by the state news agency WAM, did not say what role the Emirati warplanes would play. An Emirati official declined to elaborate.
    ...
Jordan has pledged harsh retaliation and said it would intensify strikes on Islamic State group targets. Starting Thursday, Jordanian jets have carried out daily attacks, according to the military and state media.

Jordan’s interior minister, Hussein al-Majali, told the state-run al-Rai newspaper in comments published Saturday that Jordan will go after the militants “wherever they are.”

The most recent airstrikes are “the beginning of a continued process to eliminate them and wipe them out completely,”
he said of the militants who control about a third of neighboring Syria and Iraq.

The heightened confrontation has raised concerns about possible Islamic State group attacks in Jordan.

The minister said security services have a tight grip and are ready for “anyone who wants to interfere in the security of Jordan.”

  12. Jesse Washington was just one black man to die horribly at the hands of white death squads.

I made my way down the hall to my computer and typed in: “Waco, Texas. Lynching.”

Sure enough, there it was: the charred corpse of a young black man, tied to a blistered tree in the heart of the Texas Bible Belt. Next to the burned body, young white men can be seen smiling and grinning, seemingly jubilant at their front-row seats in a carnival of death. One of them sent a picture postcard home: “This is the barbeque we had last night. My picture is to the left with a cross over it. Your son, Joe.”

The victim’s name was Jesse Washington. The year was 1916. America would soon go to war in Europe “to make the world safe for democracy.” My father was twelve, my mother eight. I was born 18 years later, at a time, I would come to learn, when local white folks still talked about Washington’s execution as if it were only yesterday. This was not medieval Europe. Not the Inquisition. Not a heretic burned at the stake by some ecclesiastical authority in the Old World.

This was Texas, and the white people in that photograph were farmers.

  13. When Mexican Marines arrived at the San Jose Ranch, 15 kilometres from Victoria, Tamaulipas, the scene was bleak. The austere main house was practically destroyed by grenades and heavy gunfire.

Outside the home, they found four bodies. Cautiously, and with their weapons drawn, the troops continued inspecting the exterior and found two more gunmen wounded and unconscious, but alive.

Inside the house only one body was found, riddled with bullets and with two weapons by his side. The body was identified as Don Alejo Garza Tamez, the owner of the ranch and a highly respected businessman in Nuevo Leon.

Upon further inspection of the interior, Marines found weapons and ammunition at every window and door. This allowed them to reconstruct how, just hours prior, the battle had played out.

Marines searched for more bodies inside the house, but none were to be found. It seemed hard to believe that one person, armed only with hunting rifles, had caused so many casualties on the attackers.

Dozens of spent shells and the smell of gunpowder gave proof of the tenacity of the man who fought to the end in defines, of not only his ranch, but his dignity.

In the end, it was deduced the man had created his own defense strategy to fight alone, placing weapons at every door and window.

The story began in the morning of Saturday November 13th, when a group of armed gunmen went to deliver an ultimatum to Don Alejo Garza, he had twenty four hours to leave his property and turn it over to the gunmen or suffer the consequences.

Using the diplomacy he had acquired over nearly eight decades of life, Don Alejo flatly announced that not only would he not be surrendering his property, but that he would be waiting for them.

When the men had left, Don Alejo gathered his workers and ordered them to take Sunday off, he wanted to be alone.

He dedicated the rest of that Saturday to taking stock of his weapons and ammunition and creating a military style fortress defines strategy for his home.

The night of Sat the 13th was long and restless, much like his past hunting adventures, Don Alejo woke early. Shortly after 4 am the motors of various trucks could be heard entering the property from a distance.

Marines who investigated the scene could only imagine how it was that morning, armed men, their impunity secured, confident they would soon be owners of yet another property. Nobody or almost nobody, could hold out against a group of heavily armed gunmen. Only Don Alejo.

The trucks entered the ranch and took up positions surrounding the house. The gunmen got out of their trucks, fires shots in the air, and announced they came to take possession of the ranch. They were expecting the terrified occupants to run out, begging for mercy with their hands in the air.

    1. But things didn't go as expected. Don Alejo welcomed them with bullets, the entire army of gunmen opened fire at the same time. Don Alejo seemed to multiply, he seemed to be everywhere. The minutes would have seemed endless to those who had seen him as easy prey. Various gunmen were killed on sight. The others, in rage and frustration, intensified the attack by swapping out their assault rifles for grenades.

When everything finally fell silent, the air was left heavy with gunpowder. The holes left in the walls and windows attested to the violence of the attack. When they went in search of what they had assumed was a large contingent, the were surprised to find only one man, Don Alejo.

The surviving gunmen did not take over the ranch. Thinking the Military would arrive at any moment, they decided to run. They left behind what they thought were six corpses, but two of their gunmen had survived.

Shortly after, the Marines arrived and methodically reconstructed the events. A lone rancher, a man who worked a lifetime to be able to enjoy the fruits of his labor, such as his ranch, had defended it to his death.

In the last hunt of his life, Don Alejo surprised the group of assassins who wanted to impose the law of the jungle on him as they had on the state.

"The Marines who were present will never forget the scene: a 77 year old man, who before death, took out six gunmen, fighting the same as the best soldiers: with dignity, courage, and honor."
