COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Why do we have to do anything about illegal immigration other than closing the border and reprimanding employers? Let the illegals worry about their own problems.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM AND WHAT IS THE URGENCY?

If I run up too much debt, back taxes, or traffic violations and there are 10 million more like me, why does Congress have to change the laws for me and my millions of others?

Why do 300,000,000 others have to change their laws and pay for my infractions and my breaking the law?

Is there something more virtuous about breaking immigration laws?

Why is the US Senate intent on rewarding foreign law breakers?

If we are worried about a large group with a problem, why not a general tax amnesty or an amnesty for those who never bothered to pay child support?

Why do we get carried away by someone else’s bullshit?

Doesn’t the US Congress have anything else to worry about?

    1. The problem was that immigration was not controlled, Deuce.
Or there would not be ten to twenty million undocumented immigrants in the US.

Those millions are a problem, for the US.
On the mos level, that most of them drive cars and trucks, unlicensed and uninsured, a problem for all the legal drivers in the land. Drives insurance rates to ever higher levels.

      Their presence is our problem.
Mostly on a basis of increased costs for the rest of US.

      Costs that are not reimbursable.

  12. Syrian rebels say they have received a shipment of weapons from their allies, the latest since the US said it would give military support to opponents of President Bashar al-Assad.

Free Syrian Army spokesman Louay Muqdad claimed the weapons could "change the course of the battle" against the Syrian regime.

"We've received quantities of new types of weapons, including some that we asked for and that we believe will change the course of the battle on the ground," Muqdad told the AFP news agency.

"We have begun distributing them on the front lines, they will be in the hands of professional officers and FSA fighters," he said.

He did not specify what weapons had been received or when they had arrived, but added that another shipment was expected soon.

"The weapons will be used for one objective, which is to fight the regime of Bashar al-Assad," Muqdad insisted. "They will be collected after the fall of the regime, we have made this commitment to the friends and brotherly countries."

The shipment follows reports of Saudi-funded small arms and anti-tank missiles being delivered to Aleppo, where rebels are facing a build-up of regime forces, which are being supplied by Russia.

The US agreed to give rebels "military support" after saying it had evidence that the regime had used chemical weapons against them.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday defended his country's arms deals with Assad's government and said the West should not send weapons to rebel forces that include "terrorist" groups.

"If the United States ... recognises one of the key Syrian opposition organisations, [Jabhat] al-Nusra, as terrorist ... how can one deliver arms to those opposition members?" Putin said at an economic forum. "Where will [those weapons] end up? What role will they play?"

Russia's foreign minister Sergei Lavrov also reiterated on Friday that Moscow would honour all weapons deals with the Syrian government.

Currently I pay $1487 a month, and I am low risk & healthy. I can see how I can end that insurance, get on the government "plan" for about $1100 (for the spouse and kids too) then purchase for about a $1000 a month a elite policy....

Investor's Business Daily: Using ObamaCare To
Create A Permanent Democratic Majority - Betsy McCaughey

The Investor's Business Daily editorial written by Betsy McCaughey details
what the health care exchanges in Obamacare really are about. And she focuses on
California because they're getting $910 million to set up the exchanges in
California. Now, the exchanges, folks, are for one purpose and that's for you to
go get your health care insurance. Every American, if you don't get your health
care from your employer, you're gonna have to go to one of these exchanges to
    get it. It's a marketplace, it's a clearinghouse, theoretically. It's a catalog.
You go pick the policy that you want based on what you want to pay -- they're
all gonna be expensive. But it turns out these exchanges are just being used for
Democrat Party outreach. I've detailed how.
The NAACP is getting $600,000 from the California exchange. The AFL-CIO is
getting $1 million. The Service Employees International Union is getting $2
million. And for what? To go door-to-door, to register voters, to show up at
community centers and make presentations on the Democrat Party and sell the
Democrat Party agenda. A group called Community Health Councils, which is a
California bunch that opposes fracking, for-profit hospitals, state budget cuts
and oil exploration, got $1 million to conduct presentations at community and
neighborhood meetings. "California's actual enrollment process is also
outsourced to employees of community organizations, unions and health
    clinics."

So when you show up to get your insurance at a California exchange, you might
be dealing to somebody from the AFL-CIO. You might be dealing with somebody from
the Service Employees International Union. Planned Parenthood is trying to get
in on some of this money. Planned Parenthood wants some exchange money to
promote their cause, which is abortion. It's another slush fund, folks. The
health care exchanges are slush funds just like the stimulus bill was.

California's Democrat controlled legislature does not want voters to
know who exactly is getting close to $200 million in outreach funding, so they
passed a law that creates an exception to the state's open records law
    .
A grand total of $200 million in Democrat Party outreach will be allocated from
the $910 million to set up the exchanges.

"Assisters will also guide the uninsured to sign up for whatever non-health
social services they may be eligible for, including welfare, food stamps and
housing assistance, according to the manual prepared by the Community Health
    Councils for California's implementation.

Anyone who remembers the days of James Curley, Boss Tweed and Tammany Hall
gets the picture. If you were poor or a newcomer to this country, you went to
the local ward boss and got whatever you needed in exchange for your vote.

The difference is that back then, politics was local. Now the Obama health
law is institutionalizing this corrupt style of politics across the country.
Whether you live in California or New local community activists and unions will
be recruiting people to enroll in ObamaCare and sign up to be part of the
    permanent, beholden Democratic voting majority."

If you don't like the trends in the demographics of this country, get out and start fornicating.

New immigrants will be the main driver of population growth in the U.S. by as early as 2027, according to new Census Bureau projections.

This would be the first time in almost two centuries that new births will not be the largest source of U.S. population growth.

The Census Bureau says its projections show a combination of declining fertility rates, aging baby boomers and ongoing immigration to the United States.

This trend stems less from more immigrants coming into the country than from Americans having fewer babies, explains Douglas Massey, who studies immigration patterns at Princeton University...

  18. California Auditor: State Has $127 Billion Net Asset Deficit

The California State Auditor has released the state government's audit for the 2011-12 year (PDF).

The state collected $218 billion (including $60 billion in federal aid, $104 billion in state taxes, and $51 billion in various fees and charges), but spent over $225 billion, a deficit twice the size of the year before. On the books, the state has $199.9 billion in assets but $215.4 billion in liabilities; eliminating assets unpledgable against obligations results in an unrestricted net asset deficit of a staggering -$127 billion. Put succinctly, the state has booked $127 billion more in promises and liabilities than it has assets to pay for them. (Part of this is because the state borrows to build things for local governments but turns title over to them, which is running up debts.) It's been getting deeper every year.

The report did not include the full cost of state retiree health and pension costs, so the real amount is probably much higher.

In November, California raised its top income tax rate to 13.3 percent, now the highest in the country. The change was retroactive to the beginning of 2012 (as was a recent clawback of a business deduction), so a burst of revenue will likely happen in the short-term. In the long-term, it depends on your worldview: does a high level of state spending promote economic growth, or will high taxes drag economic growth?

(Hint: High earners and profitable businesses are leaving in increasingly larger droves.)

Population growth is one of the key drivers of GDP growth. The population growth comes from either births or immigration. The US birth rate was declining for twelve straight years until 2002 when it hit an all time low. It then reversed and started moving up again until the recession at which time it started moving down again. Last year it hit a new all time low.

    Birth Rate Plunges During Recession

Birth rates hit an historic low in America last year. This small number of newborns will hit the workforce in 20 years, just as the last baby boomer reaches full retirement age. The pension math is not pretty.

    http://business.time.com/2012/12/04/birth-rate-plunges-during-recession/#ixzz2WsMPQZJS

I suspect we will get immigration reform by the end of the year and likely no one will be happy.

With regard to the illegals already here, some would argue that they are already a draw on resources and that making them legal would only help while others would argue the opposite. There is likely no way that argument will be settled for a decade or more.

However, one big change we can expect is in the H1B process and the 'sisters versus scientists' merit argument.

For the first time, automatic legal permanent residency -- green cards -- would be accorded to an unlimited number of high achievers, including scientists, professors, executives and holders of doctoral degrees in any field from any country.

Experts estimate the overall number of green cards issued to foreigners based on personal merit and skill could triple under the measure's new or expanded provisions.

While I see the shift to a merit based system as positive, there is still the issue of are the companies requesting the increased H1B's doing so because they can't find qualified people here already (their argument) or is it that they can't find qualified people here that will work for the pay scale they offer (my argument)? It appears Congress is trying to address that issue by attempting to "...get rid of abuse in the H1-B system by allowing the federal government to audit businesses and requires that they give immigrants a prevailing market wage.

The following compares the differences in the Senate and House versions on the H1B issues.

Whatever happens, we are likely to get (be stuck with ?) a bill that no one will be fully satisfied with.
