COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

"Still, according to experts, the notion that most Syrian rebel groups are tied to al-Qaida is mostly a myth. Experts say that rebel groups with ties to al-Qaida make up about 10% to 20% of the country's rebel forces fighting Assad. "

This report from Business Insider ends with the most amazing two sentences, the same that appear on the title of this post. Now, go through this with me.

"Experts" say that rebel groups make up about 10% to 20% of Syria's rebel forces fighting Assad. Assume the figures are right and then assume they are understated by 50%. The way Washington lies and distorts facts, I may be understating the problem. We are supporting an insurgency in a civil war that is composed of from 10% to 40% al Qaeda. Here are some of the implications:

  1. Al Qaeda, a 10-40% part of the Syrian Rebels presently is receiving assistance from the CIA.
  2. Al Qaeda, as part of the Syrian Rebels presently has full diplomatic support from the US State Department, The Pentagon, The NSA, the Republican heads of the US House of Representatives, the Democratic head of the Senate and will soon be supported by the US Air Force and the US Navy.
  3. The major US media is supporting the Obama Administration's drive to involve the US in a civil war on the side that is being supported by al Qaeda.
  4. The proposed war is based on unproven allegations as to who used the chemical weapons.
  5. Without exaggeration, a full US attack on Syria will kill more Syrians that were killed in the gas attack.
  6. Iraq, the recent recipient of 10 years of a US war, ostensibly fought because of some connection to 911 has announced that they will not cooperate in any US aggression against Syria.
  7. The Islamist leadership in Turkey will assist.
  8. Saudi Arabia, the country that supplied money and 18 of their citizens for the attack of the US on 911, approves and supports  the US being on the side of al Qaeda against the government of Syria.
  9. The President of The United States is orchestrating this war.
  10. Almost two years ago, the same Islamic groups were involved in the US  attack of Libya. Part of the repercussions of the war in Libya was CIA involvement with shipping arms from Libya to Syria. It blew up in their face in Benghazi and every member of the Obama Administration from Obama on down lied to the American public with a fabricated story about an internet video offending Islam being the cause of the Benghazi attack and killing of four Americans.
  11. The same US President, Barack Hussein Obama, now expects up to believe the "Common Sense" notion that Assad was more likely to have used chemical weapons than al Qaeda. In a sense we are to accept al Qaeda's claims.
  12. There are no videos of the families of the children killed by the gas and no videos on the actual killings.
  13. The internet is laced with videos of al Qaeda, fighting with the rebels, butchering and murdering captured soldiers and civilians. The videos include the murder of children. The videos include the murder of a captured Syrian officer, whose al Qaeda murderer then  cut out his heart and liver and ate it.
  14. The Internet has videos of truck drivers pulled off the road by al Qaeda rebels and were then murdered in cold blood because they prayed outside the standards set by al Qaeda and the rebels.
  15. The internet has videos of priests being murdered and some beheaded while they were alive by rebels and al Qaeda.
  16. As I type this one of the oldest Syrian Christian villages, still using the  language of Jesus, is being assaulted and raped by al Qaeda. For many years this village was  protected along with millions of other Christians by the Assad government. The Assad government cannot protect them because Syria is fearful of the  US Navy under the orders of Barack Hussein Obama, poised to attack Syria.
  17. Christian members of the US armed forces are inadvertently causing the deaths of Christians at the hands of al Qaeda because of their presence and stated purpose of attacking the government and armed forces of Syria.

BUSINESS INSIDER

Of all the criticisms leveled at White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough Sunday in a tour of the morning shows, one seemed to bug him most — Sen. Ted Cruz's (R-Texas) charge that U.S. forces in Syria would be aiding al-Qaida.
Cruz told the conservative website The Blaze last week that the U.S. shouldn't get involved in Syria because it doesn't "have a dog in the fight," and it risks helping rebel forces aligned with terrorist groups.

"We should be focused on defending the United States of America," Cruz said. "That’s why young men and women sign up to join the military — not to, as you know, serve as Al Qaeda’s air force."

It was a suggestion to which McDonough took umbrage when asked by ABC's George Stephanopoulos.

"I am outraged for somebody to suggest that our people would be serving as allies to al-Qaida, one," McDonough said on ABC's "This Week."

"Two, on this question about what this is and what this isn’t. What this is, George, is very clear. Targeted, consequential, limited attack against Assad forces and Assad capabilities so that he is deterred from carrying out these actions again.

"Here is what it is not. It is not boots on the ground. It is not an extended air campaign. It is not Iraq, Afghanistan or Libya. This is a very concerned, concentrated, limited effort that we can carry out and that can underscore and secure our interests."

Cruz, who subsequently appeared on ABC, shot back at McDonough's dismissal.

"Just because Assad is a murderous tyrant doesn't mean his opponents are any better. In June, the intelligence showed that of the nine major rebel forces in Syria, at least seven, appear to have significant ties to al-Qaida," Cruz said.

Still, according to experts, the notion that most Syrian rebel groups are tied to al-Qaida is mostly a myth. Experts say that rebel groups with ties to al-Qaida make up about 10% to 20% of the country's rebel forces fighting Assad.

  1. None of these fuckers can answer this question:

If Syria responds in kind to the unprovoked attack on its soil by US forces by striking back at US forces, something any red-blooded American would do, what will be the US response?

I'll answer that which will not come from their lying face.

It will be an escalation. It will tank our markets, drive up the price of oil, further wreck the economic security of ordinary Americans, kill Americans and people in Syria that did nothing to us.

It could get out of hand and if it does, we should promise all of them that we, the people will hold them responsible. We should all do that before hand, and tell them that this time is different.

This shit is over. We have had enough. They have one chance to do the right thing and stop it and if they don't then they will pay the price for their crimes when we will have to clean up their mess.

Get out there and let's do our part to stop this.

  2. Mr Hague admitted the Americans were "disappointed" by David Cameron's failure to secure the backing of MPs but remained "very committed to what we call the special relationship". The Prime Minister has ruled out bringing back the issue to Parliament but faces pressure from some quarters to do so if there is a significant change in the circumstances.

Mr Hague said it would be "alarming" if the UK vote was repeated in the US and elsewhere. The risks of the world failing to respond "are greater than the risks of doing so in a limited, proportionate and careful way", he told the BBC.

"If it is decided in the various parliaments of the world that no one will stand up to the use of chemical weapons and take any action about that, that will be a very alarming moment in the affairs of the world."

Hey, Deuce, lighten up. This is not a court of law. Intelligence doesn't work that way.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House asserted Sunday that a "common-sense test" dictates the Syrian government is responsible for a chemical weapons attack that President Barack Obama says demands a U.S. military response. But Obama's top aide says the administration lacks "irrefutable, beyond-a-reasonable-doubt evidence" that skeptical Americans, including lawmakers who will start voting on military action this week, are seeking.

"This is not a court of law. And intelligence does not work that way," White House chief of staff Denis McDonough said during his five-network public relations blitz Sunday to build support for limited strikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"The common-sense test says he is responsible for this. He should be held to account," McDonough said of the Syrian leader who for two years has resisted calls from inside and outside his country to step down.

Asked in another interview about doubt, McDonough was direct: "No question in my mind."

  4. "people in Syria that did nothing to us"

where do you start the counting?

    since what year?

your view of syria (and it's friends) seems to be limited to a time that you feel comfortable with. No outside the circle understanding of geopolitics.

Just a simplistic view that the "people" of syria have done nothing to deserve this.

It's like you are telling a story but it's taking place in a vacuum...

Syria and it's people have been on the vanguard of supporting international terror for decades. Not to mention it's illegal nuclear proliferation, it's illegal arms exports to terror groups, it's logistical supply of hezbollah and hamas of hundreds of thousands of rockets, millions of rounds of ammo, money and cover.

It's not like syria and it's people haven't been waging war against America for decades, even if it was a proxy war, it was still war.

SO now the assad assholes are fighting the moslem brotherhood assholes. 100 thousand are dead. 4.5 million are refugees.

Sorry I have no pity for the Syrian people. Damascus USED to be a center of jewish culture, Long before Islam ever showed it's disgusting face there Jews lived, owned land, had commerce. Then Islam came, Jews were subjected to crap.. Then the modern times came and Jews from Syria were driven out of their historic homes into Israel by the arabs of Syria.

So karma's a giant kick in the ass...

    Get used to it...

    3. I am trying to keep my people, the ones, Americans, who overwhelmingly do not want your stinking war. Fight your own battles, but you won't, will you, instead you do this:

As lawmakers announce their disillusionment with striking Syria one by one, the Obama administration is looking for reinforcements. It seems everywhere they turn, it's President Barack Obama versus Capitol Hill.

After two public congressional hearings with Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, not to mention countless classified briefings, Obama is loosing the war of popular opinion this week.

Friday, Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn, R-Texas, the man who lines up votes for his party, came out in opposition to the resolution to intervene in Syria. Thursday, Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, turned their backs on Obama's call for action in the Middle East.

"I knew this was going to be a heavy lift," Obama said Friday during a press conference about the growing battle.

Coming in for the assist is the Jewish lobbying group, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The group announced it will unfold an all-out effort on Capitol Hill, a landmark move for an organization that has sat out whipping members for votes on other resolutions in the past.

More than 200 leaders are expected to lobby lawmakers next week. The leaders will explain that a Syria strike will send a message not just to Syrian President Bashar Assad, but also Iranian leaders who are watching to see how the U.S. stands up against the deployment of chemical weapons.

"Simply put, barbarism on a mass scale must not be given a free pass," AIPAC said in a released statement. "This is a critical moment when America must also send a forceful message of resolve to Iran and Hezbollah — both of whom have provided direct and extensive military support to Assad. The Syrian regime and its Iranian ally have repeatedly demonstrated that they will not respect civilized norms."

  7. The Obama administration secretly won permission from a surveillance court in 2011 to reverse restrictions on the National Security Agency’s use of intercepted phone calls and e-mails, permitting the agency to search deliberately for Americans’ communications in its massive databases, according to interviews with government officials and recently declassified material.

In addition, the court extended the length of time that the NSA is allowed to retain intercepted U.S. communications from five years to six years — and more under special circumstances, according to the documents, which include a recently released 2011 opinion by U.S. District Judge John D. Bates, then chief judge of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court.

What had not been previously acknowledged is that the court in 2008 imposed an explicit ban — at the government’s request — on those kinds of searches, that officials in 2011 got the court to lift the bar and that the search authority has been used.

Together the permission to search and to keep data longer expanded the NSA’s authority in significant ways without public debate or any specific authority from Congress. The administration’s assurances rely on legalistic definitions of the term “target” that can be at odds with ordinary English usage. The enlarged authority is part of a fundamental shift in the government’s approach to surveillance: collecting first, and protecting Americans’ privacy later.

“The government says, ‘We’re not targeting U.S. persons,’ ” said Gregory T. Nojeim, senior counsel at the Center for Democracy and Technology. “But then they never say, ‘We turn around and deliberately search for Americans’ records in what we took from the wire.’ That, to me, is not so different from targeting Americans at the outset.”

The court decision allowed the NSA “to query the vast majority” of its e-mail and phone call databases using the e-mail addresses and phone numbers of Americans and legal residents without a warrant, according to Bates’s opinion.

Whether it is a tactic that will work, with 70% disapproving of the use of military force, that I'm not sure of.

All leading up to positioning the 2014 elections.

      End his effective tenure.

      His effective tenure is ended.

In a second term, a president usually has 12-18 months to complete his legacy. After that other things intrude as people start positioning themselves for the next president.

Obama set some specific goals in his SOU speech, four or five of them as I recall. Gun control, immigration reform, a higher minimum wage, etc.

It has now been 9 months. Circumstances dictated that gun control would be the first he tried. When that failed a lot of the momentum went out of his push for the others. Immigration reform is still there but dying. There is a chance on minimum wage increase but that is hardly a defining issue.

Almost the entire first 9 months have been taken up on the defensive responding to a whole series of scandals, as wells as, to Egypt and Syria. In all instances, IMO, the administration has appeared feckless and ineffective, and in Obama's case specifically kind of disinterested. Right now the administration is being driven by foreign affairs while the only thing Americans are interested in are domestic affairs. I expect many of these problem issues and the scandals will last until the end of the year and since new ones seem to continue coming out on a regular basis perhaps for much longer.

I see nothing new on the horizon that will enhance Obama's legacy by much.

(That is, unless he manages to become a scratch golfer. :) )

    3. I think that a goal of scratch golf is a bridge to far for Mr Obama.

I would agree that he appears disinterested, I do think comes from his style of management by delegation. He is not a hands on kind of a guy, from outward appearances.

Delegate and forget seems to be his technique.

General Clapper is still on the job.
He was not asked to resign, nor fired by the President.
There were no calls for his prosecution for perjury.

That IRS lady, still on paid leave, I do believe.

George Zimmerman, the Florida man who was acquitted of murder in the shooting of an unarmed teenager in 2012, was being questioned by authorities over a possible domestic violence incident, a police spokesman said on Monday.

  16. Secretary of State John Kerry said Monday that Syrian President Bashar Assad could resolve the crisis surrounding his purported use of chemical weapons by turning "every single bit" of his arsenal over to the international community by the end of the week.

    The above from ABC News
    Below, the WSJ ...

On Monday, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov of Russia, one of the strongest supporters of the Assad regime, urged Syria to comply with Mr. Kerry's call.

"We are calling on the Syrian leadership not just to agree to put chemical-weapons stores under international control, but also to their subsequent destruction, as well as fully fledged accession to the Chemical Weapons Convention," Mr. Lavrov said.

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, in comments to reporters in Moscow, didn't provide any specifics, other than to say that Syria welcomed the Russian proposal.

"The Syrian Arab republic welcomes the Russian initiative, motivated by the concerns of the Russian leadership for the lives of our citizens and the security of our country," Mr. Moallem said
