COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

    3. THE CURIOUS CASE OF NATALIA VESELNITSKAYA

Did the Russian lawyer visit the Trump campaign to undermine it?

      July 14, 2017 Matthew Vadum

It turns out the Moscow-based lawyer whose brief meeting with Trump campaign officials last year was obtained under false pretenses has significant ties to Democrat opposition researchers in the United States and was extended special privileges by the Obama administration.

Could this mean attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya came, or perhaps was sent, to America to hurt Donald Trump’s campaign for president? And if Veselnitskaya had less-than-honorable intentions, what role, if any, did Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee play in this unfolding drama?

The Hill newspaper reports that the Obama administration went to extraordinary lengths to allow Veselnitskaya to enter the U.S. and remain here to complete her business in this country. After Veselnitskaya, who reportedly has several pro-Hillary Clinton and anti-Donald Trump items on her Facebook page, was denied a U.S. visa, then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch personally intervened and cleared the way for her to come to this country.

British music publicist Rob Goldstone helped to set up the storied June 9, 2016, meeting at Trump Tower in Manhattan between Veselnitskaya, Donald Trump Jr., then-campaign manager Paul Manafort, and presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner, claiming boastfully in an email exchange with Donald Jr. that the Russians wanted to share incriminating information about Democrat Hillary Clinton.

We now know Veselnitskaya had no earth-shattering revelations to impart about the Russia-friendly former secretary of state who was then running against Donald Trump. Instead of offering “Political Opposition Research” at the roughly 20-minute-long get-together, the Russian woman “had no information to provide and wanted to talk about adoption policy and the Magnitsky Act,” Donald Trump Jr. said earlier this week in a statement on Twitter.

The Magnitsky Act, which Russian President Vladimir Putin despises, allows the U.S. government to refuse visas to Russians considered guilty of human rights violations. After it was enacted at the end of 2012, Russia retaliated by halting American adoptions of Russian orphans and banning entry to Russia by specific U.S. officials.

Veselnitskaya, who was a prosecutor in Russia 16 years ago, told NBC News she “never had any damaging or sensitive information about Hillary Clinton,” adding she wanted to let people know about "the real circumstances behind the Magnitsky Act," and was hoping to testify about the sanctions statute before Congress.

There is some evidence that Democrats were working with Russia against the Trump campaign, radio talk show host Erick Erickson suggests.

“There is a remarkably small degree of separation between Natalia Veselnitskaya and Fusion GPS, the Democrat opposition research firm that came up with the Trump dossier,” Erickson writes, and this “raise[s] the issue of whether Democrats and Russians were as collaborative as the Democrats claim the Trump team was.”

The “piss-gate” dossier is the unvetted 35-page report written by former British spy Christopher Steele and published by cat-video website BuzzFeed. The FBI had been considering paying Steele “for his Trump dossier work,” Erickson notes.

“Fusion GPS was paid by a Democratic ally of Hillary Clinton’s to conduct the research,” the Daily Caller reported. The dubious document claimed, among other things, that Trump hired prostitutes to urinate on a hotel room bed in Moscow.........

  8. July 14, 2017,A Grim Centennial: The Russia That Could Have Been
    By Bruce Walker

The left has tried over the last century to somehow portray Bolshevik Russia as better than Tsarist Russia. Eugene Lyon, a former communist who was appalled by what he saw when he visited the Soviet Union, wrote a book on the fiftieth anniversary of the Bolshevik junta, Workers' Paradise Lost, and in that book Lyons goes through every conceivable comparison between Tsarist Russia and the Soviet Union. In every way, the tsars were better than the Soviets.

Tsarist Russia had the fastest growing economy in the world in 1913. By 1934, if trends in industrial production had continued, it would have been the greatest industrial power in the world. Tsarist Russia was a food-exporting nation as well as a nation that exported cotton, lumber, gold, and many other minerals.

Science and art flourished under the tsars, just as it atrophied and then decayed under the Bolsheviks. Chemistry, astronomy, psychology, and several other fields of science were advanced by men under the tsars. The 19th-century Russian literary period, which may have never been equaled in human history, was under the tsars.

What about human rights? The right to free legal counsel was granted by the tsars when few other nations bothered with such niceties. Political prisoners to Siberia could live in cabins with their families and, if they wished, simply walked away and reappeared in Moscow.

The great stain on Tsarist Russia was the pogroms against Jews, a real and sad fact, but Jews were incomparably better off under the tsars than under the Soviets. It was the Soviets, not the tsars, who invaded synagogues and made shoes out of Torah scrolls, and it was the Soviets who banned the making of matzo and instruction in Hebrew and having a bris for a newborn boy.

Jews were not permitted to rise above a certain rank in the military, and they were denied all information about the Holocaust. Virtually all Jews who had been Old Bolsheviks were purged and killed. Virulent Soviet anti-Semitism grew more patent as the Soviet Union aged and needed scapegoats.

Worse were the tens of millions who died during the Holodomor and the hundred million or so processed through the hellish Gulag, as Alexander Solzhenitsyn so painstakingly chronicled in The Gulag Archipelago. The Nazis modeled their horrific system of camps and death on what the Soviets had done before them and what the Soviets showed the Nazis in way of instruction in evil.

Even worse was the fact that the Second World War began with aggressive war waged by the Soviet Union in alliance with Nazi Germany and that until June 1941, the Soviets were doing everything in their power to help Nazi Germany win. After the war ended, the Soviets insured that half of Europe was enslaved and that China was left to the tender mercies of Mao, the greatest mass murderer in history.

All this could have been prevented if the Provisional Government of Russia had survived the Bolshevik subversion, a process that began in earnest in July 1917, a century ago. The world today would be a radically different and better place if Kerensky and his government had had a chance to form Russia in the decade following the First World War.

If today we had a truly benevolent, free and democratic Russia and China growing out of the debris of the First World War, then we would have no problem with North Korea, and the civilized world would have a united front against radical Islam. It is highly unlikely that Hitler would have ever come to power, because a free Russia would have joined France and Britain in opposing German re-militarization without crushing the hopes of the German people.

Events have consequences, often far greater and more ominous than we can see at the time. One hundred years ago, a ghastly malignancy was unleashed upon our world, and we are still suffering from that disaster.

  9. Hmmm: Judge Allows US Specialist To Examine Charlie Gard

ED MORRISSEYPosted at 12:01 pm on July 14, 2017

Has the court in the Charlie Gard case signaled a new openness to treatment? Judge Nicholas Francis has now decided to have the US specialist who has volunteered to treat the baby come to the UK to examine him. Dr. Michio Hirono will be joined by a doctor from the Vatican hospital that has also volunteered to care for Gard rather than have him removed from the ventilator that is allowing the baby to breathe:

An American doctor who specializes in conditions such as that affecting Charlie Gard will be traveling to Britain next week to assess the critically ill baby.

High Court Judge Nicholas Francis said he is “open-minded about the evidence” to come after the visit of Dr. Michio Hirano of Columbia University. Hirano’s research focuses on mitochondrial diseases and genetic myopathies and he has treated others with conditions similar to that involving the 11-month-old. …

Hirano will meet with Charlie’s current immediate care team, together with other specialists, including a doctor from the Vatican children’s hospital.

“We’ll have to wait and see the evidence,” Judge Francis said. He promised to rule by July 25.
As some commented on hearing the news, it’s mighty generous of the judge to allow for an outside opinion by a specialist in the field. Until now, Great Ormond Street Hospital and the courts have all claimed to have the entirety of information needed to deny the child any other attempts at care, despite the private resources his parents have raised to get it. Remember well that had this court and the Great Ormond Street Hospital gotten its way, this would have been an autopsy rather than an examination. Charlie Gard was supposed to have been disconnected from the ventilator two weeks ago.

Now that the case has gotten worldwide attention, Judge Francis has now implied that he doesn’t have full understanding of Charlie’s situation. The reason why this hearing was necessary at all is because Judge Francis was obstinately closed-minded about the evidence in the first hearing, and so was everyone else who arrogated to themselves the authority to act on Charlie’s behalf from his parents.

    1. Time Magazine reflects on the impact this notoriety has had, and either credits or blames American conservatives for it, depending on one’s perspective:

The twist in the legal case comes as a movement to bring Charlie to the U.S. has become an international campaign, bolstered by the involvement of conservative groups from the United States led by Catholics and evangelicals . Major attention on the case first picked up outside the U.K. when Pope Francis said in a Vatican statement that he was following the case “with affection and sadness” and prayed that Charlie’s parents’ “wish to accompany and treat their child until the end isn’t neglected.”

The following day President Donald Trump tweeted to his 33.7 million followers that he would be “delighted” to help Charlie, and the saga reached an entirely new audience. Suddenly, the case of Charlie Gard was being discussed in churches and by socially conservative groups across the U.S. On July 6, the Susan B. Anthony List, March for Life, Concerned Women of America and Americans United for Life — all socially conservative groups active in opposition to abortion — held a joint press conference in Washington D.C., where they announced the launch of a campaign to ‘Save Charlie Gard,’ including a petition and a “social media push” to raise awareness and support for Charlie and his parents. …

Thomas Williams, an Auxiliary Bishop for the British city of Liverpool, questioned the motives of some external actors. “It’s a terrible situation for both the family and the hospital,” he told TIME. “I’ve always accepted, as a priest and a hospital chaplain, that people need to be allowed to die and sometimes nature needs to take its course. The right-wing element of these evangelicals, I’m afraid I’m not down that line at all… I can’t read their minds, but I do think that people will stand on soapboxes when situations arise.”
This view paints the parents as the victims of the activists, which is a perverse observation — and which puts the courts in position as the authority for what’s best for them, too, rather than themselves. All the parents wanted to do is to use private resources for outside specialists to see if anything could be done for their child. The power of the state blocked that option based on their opinion that Charlie would be better off dead, based on what the judge now implicitly acknowledges was incomplete information. Williams should be asking why Judge Francis and the EU Court of Human Rights didn’t seek examinations and testimony from those specialists directly before consigning Charlie to death.

Time does acknowledge this, at least subtly, in its conclusion:

The fresh evidence presented in Thursday’s hearings might not have emerged had it not been for the involvement of the White House, and Charlie’s family believes the campaign may have saved their child’s life.
State control of health care is what produces this arrogance, and the negation of parental authority is another weapon used to exalt the state’s jurisdiction at the expense of families. There are moral lessons to be learned from this, even if some want to deliberately shade their eyes to them.

Dem senator beclowns herself on Senate floor
    By Thomas Lifson

The needle on my schadenfreude gauge just moved into the red zone, where my soul may be in peril. After all, it is indecent to take pleasure in the suffering of another being, and I have no excuse. But really, am I supposed to pretend this misspelling by Senator Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) on a giant poster on the hallowed Senate floor doesn't deserve mockery?

In the interest of fairness, here is the entire context on video. It is even better because she doesn't notice the misspelling as her aide switches the cardboard posters on the easel, and she drones on, clueless to the mildly moronic spectacle she offers.

It is just too rich to ignore. Dumbing it down with posters and dumbing yourself down at the same time. All the more delicious because the rhyme "Cantwell can't spell" springs to the mind so readily.

It's rich because everyone knows that the Democrats are the party of intellectual pretension. They are in bed with the politicized higher education industry, receiving the lion's share of political donations from the ivory tower and pretending that their views are more informed and "scientific" than those of their opponents, upon whom they look down with disdain.

I honestly do not know who was the first member of Congress to bring an easel to the floor of the House or Senate and use a series of poster-sized pieces of cardboard with slogans printed on them, kind of like pre-computer PowerPoint slides, only even more stilted and awkward. Surely, the practice did not exist before C-SPAN's cameras began televising sessions of Congress, as the small audience of tourists, journalists, and the occasional member of the chamber who actually bothered to show up would not be worth the trouble of printing up the oversized visual aids. And proofreading them.

The most notorious, widely ridiculed congressional user of posters up to now has been Rep. Alan Grayson:

VIDEO TO WARM YOUR HEART HERE

I understand the utility of visual aids and have used plenty of them in the course of making presentations of various sorts, beginning with the age of transparencies and overhead projectors through today's state-of-the-art capabilities of video display. Big pieces of cardboard on an easel is the worst, most awkward method of directing the audience's eye. As far as I am concerned, that is a feature, not a bug, when it comes to Congress. Forcing members to use cardboard charts produces pictures of them standing next to their handiwork. And pictures are more powerful than mere words in mental impact in a number of ways. So I encourage Congress to stay with tradition and not allow computer displays on the floor of either chamber.

    6. Quirico’s exposé uncovered an elaborate ring that is apparently operating in plain view. The illicit art is brought into Italy on Chinese-flagged cargo ships coming from Sirte to the Calabria port of Gioia Tauro, easily the most dangerous port in the country characterized by a mass of illegally constructed buildings mostly made out of abandoned ship containers. It is here that the ‘Ndrangheta has, for years, run the biggest drug-smuggling business in Europe.

On Monday, Interior Minister Angelino Alfano confirmed La Stampa’s reporting, adding that the Italian government is acutely aware the illegal ring of art-for-arms funds jihadi terrorism in nearby Libya. “We have studied the ‘GDP of terror’ and we know that one of the components is the commercialization of stolen art,” he told reporters. “The stolen artifacts feed ISIS and contribute to the GDP of terror.”

The Italian criminal gangs reportedly acquire the artifacts from jihadi tomb raiders in Libya in exchange for a wide range of weaponry, including Kalashnikov rifles and rocket-propelled grenades that the Camorra have in great supply from a long-standing arms-trafficking racket with Russia, Moldova, and the Ukraine.

The weapons are either smuggled back to Libya on the same container ships or left in Europe to be picked up by foreign fighters here. In September, Italy’s financial police discovered what they called “a veritable arsenal of the Camorra” in a stolen car in an abandoned parking lot in a slummy suburb of Naples. In the trunk, divided among duffel bags, were eight pistols, four sub-machine guns, an assault rifle, and 650 rounds of ammunition along with silencers for the weapons. The serial numbers had been scratched off all the weapons, according to police sources. The car was left unlocked, the weapons apparently ready for pickup by someone who could have easily smuggled them into Northern Europe.

    1. Emmanuel Macron and the barren elite of a changing continent

Emmanuel Macron founded a new party, and his election as France's president is said to herald the "revival of Europe." Interestingly, Macron has no children.

This is not that notable in itself. After all, George Washington had no biological children. But across the continent Macron wants to bind closer together, there's a stark pattern:

German Chancellor Angela Merkel also has no children. British prime minister Theresa May has no children. Italian prime minister Paolo Gentiloni has no children. Holland's Mark Rutte has no children. Sweden's Stefan Löfven has no biological children. Luxembourg's Xavier Bettel has no children. Scotland's Nicola Sturgeon has no children. Jean-Claude Juncker, president of the European Commission, has no children.

This is too remarkable to ignore. While Macron is young—39 years old—the rest of Europe is being governed by childless Baby Boomers.

Tom Wolfe wrote about Baby Boomers and the Me Decade:
