“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS)—The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office has released footage of a 2014 police-involved shooting in Atlantic City after the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled earlier this month that the video is a matter of public interest.
The incident began on March 27, 2014, when with two 911 calls reported a man with a gun at the La Escondida II Restaurant in the 700 block of Black Horse Pike in Pleasantville.
According to investigators, the man, later identified as 27-year-old Antoquan T. Watson, of Williamstown, fled Pleasantville police in a vehicle east on Route 322 through Egg Harbor Township’s West Atlantic City section, on to Albany Avenue. The vehicle turned south on West End Avenue into Ventnor, returned back to Albany Avenue via West End Avenue, turned east on Albany Avenue, and north on Atlantic Avenue. The pursuit lasted 11 minutes and covered 10.3 miles.
Video captures the chase ending at Missouri and Atlantic Avenues in Atlantic City, at the foot of the AC Expressway, near Tanger Outlets The Walk outdoor shops.
In the video, you can see Watson get out of his moving vehicle and raise his weapon as he opens fire on police. Seconds later, video shows ambush bullets from police.
An autopsy on March 28-29 revealed that Watson sustained a total of 45 gunshot wounds.

  1. ATLANTIC CITY — A day after Antoquan Watson led police on a 7-mile chase from Pleasantville to Atlantic City that ended in a hail of gunfire — a chase that began over an unpaid restaurant bill of less than $9 — his profile remained indistinct.

Watson on Thursday led police on a chase from La Escondida II restaurant in Pleasantville through parts of Egg Harbor Township and Ventnor into Atlantic City. At Atlantic Avenue, witnesses and police said, he fired at officers, who then returned fire and killed him.

Public records hold little information on Watson. He had lived at various addresses over the past few years, including on Albany Avenue in Atlantic City and Elderberry Avenue in Egg Harbor Township, but his most recent listed address was a post office box.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said Watson was from Williamstown, a section of Monroe Township in Gloucester County. The Monroe Township Police Department said Watson did not have an arrest record there.

The incident began when Watson tried to pay his bill at La Escondida. After two credit cards were rejected and he didn’t have enough cash to cover the bill — which restaurant owner Irma Lara said was just more than $8 — he pulled out a gun.

After he jumped in an SUV and drove off, Pleasantville, Egg Harbor Township and Atlantic City police eventually joined in the pursuit, which ended in a wild scene at the heart of the Atlantic City commercial district.

Angela Kleinman, the manager at Kitchen Collection at Tanger Outlets The Walk, was helping a customer in her store when the black SUV pulled up to the curb just yards from her front door.

She heard a shot, the first she had ever heard. Then she heard dozens more.

“It was a barrage,” she said. “My customer turned to me and he said, ‘They made Swiss cheese out of him.’”

On Friday, passers-by worried the incident might harm the city’s image.

  2. DUMB ASS

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is allegedly conducting a criminal investigation into a top Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) lawyer, according to multiple government officials who spoke to Circa reporter Sara Carter.

FBI General Counsel James A. Baker is being investigated for leaking classified information to the media. The revelation surfaced shortly after DOJ Attorney General Jeff Sessions said that he would soon be making an announcement regarding the progress of leak investigations.

An FBI spokeswoman would not comment on Baker or confirm or deny any investigation. A DOJ official would not comment on Baker, but said that the upcoming announcement is regarding “stepped up efforts on leak investigations.”

The three sources who spoke with Circa said that Baker is the top suspect in the ongoing criminal investigation, but would not specify which classified information he leaked. A federal law enforcement official added that “the bureau is scouring for leakers and there’s been a lot of investigations.”

Baker is close to former FBI director James Comey, who appointed him to the general counsel position in 2014.

“Jim’s experience as a career prosecutor and as a national security official, as well his experience in the private sector, make him an excellent fit for his new position here at the FBI,” Comey said in a press release about Baker’s appointment.

New York Magazine reported in June that Baker advised Comey on meetings Comey held with President Donald Trump.

The news of the investigation comes on the heels of recent leaks from the White House communications staff, which came despite warnings from the new Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci. Michael Short, a press aide at the White House, resigned on July 25 after Scaramucci spoke about firing him for leaks.

  3. Our cop in the video shooting cop car certainly had the competitive instinct. He was damned if he was going to be last cop at the end, and came in first.

Made a couple marvelous fast maneuvers to catch up then stay in front.

With all the cop cars striving for 1st place, I thought I was watching The Daytona 500.

  6. ATLANTIC CITY

TLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- It was what everyone was talking about in the fall of 1976, in and around Atlantic City, N.J.: A statewide referendum that would allow legalized gambling in the so-called "Queen of Resorts," a once-thriving coastal community that had fallen on hard times.

Gambling, many thought, would be a boon to the struggling city with nearly 20% unemployment, restoring it to its early 20th-century glory. Eve Davis, 51, was born and raised in Atlantic City, and remembers how strongly her parents supported the referendum.

"My family believed it was what was going to save the city," said Davis, a cocktail server at the Showboat casino who now lives in nearby Ventnor, N.J. "It was going to bring great jobs."

The casinos did breathe new life into Atlantic City's tourism industry, with the number of visitors jumping from about 7 million annually to more than 30 million today. And gambling did create jobs: nearly 43,000 at the casinos' peak, in 2006. That's declined to about 33,000 as Atlantic City has struggled to compete with casinos in neighboring states.

But the arrival of casinos has not fixed the deep-seated social problems plaguing a city where nearly 30% of residents live below the poverty line. Unemployment remains high, at nearly 18% last year. Gangs roam in low-income neighborhoods, and the crime rate in 2011 was 107.2 incident per 1,000 residents, compared with 39.3 for Atlantic County.

And the very government agency created to help city residents has since changed its focus — to helping casinos attract more gamblers and visitors.

"In hindsight yes, one of the things that we learned in Atlantic City, whether it's gambling or other economic development, (is that) economic development in and of itself is not a cure for social problems," said Jim Whelan, a former Atlantic City mayor who is now a Democratic state senator.

"The hardcore unemployed are a social problem. It's not an economic problem," said Whelan, who has taught in Atlantic City's public schools for 35 years. "The help-wanted sign does not solve that problem. People don't have the life skills, the job skills, to function in the workplace."

The authority has had some notable successes, in particular a housing and retail development that transformed the city's dilapidated Northeast Inlet section.

But the agency has been criticized for investing in politically connected projects and for taking a piecemeal approach to redevelopment that leaves large swaths of depressed Atlantic City untouched.

  13. AS BAD AS ATLANTIC CITY IS - WASHINGTON IS WORSE

    Circa reports:

FBI General Counsel James A. Baker is purportedly under a Department of Justice criminal investigation for allegedly leaking classified national security information to the media, according to multiple government officials close to the probe who spoke with Circa on the condition of anonymity.

FBI spokeswoman Carol Cratty said the bureau would not comment on Baker and would not confirm or deny any investigation. Baker did not return comment when Circa attempted to reach him through the FBI.

This comes as Department of Justice Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he would soon be making an announcement regarding the progress of leak investigations. A DOJ official declined to comment on Circa’s inquiry into Baker but did say, the planned announcement by Sessions is part of the overall “stepped up efforts on leak investigations.”

Three sources, with knowledge of the apparent investigation, told Circa that Baker is the top suspect in an ongoing leak investigation, but Circa has not been able to confirm the details of what national security information or material was allegedly leaked.

A federal law enforcement official with knowledge of ongoing internal investigations in the bureau told Circa, “the bureau is scouring for leakers and there’s been a lot of investigations.”

The revelation comes as the Trump administration has ramped up efforts to contain leaks both within the White House and within its own national security apparatus.

Baker is a close confidant of former FBI Director James Comey, and recent media reports suggested he was reportedly advising the then-FBI director on legal matters following private meetings the former director had in February with President Trump in the Oval Office.

First reported by The Hill, former FBI James Comey also accused of leaking classified information to the media.

Before he met with Trump, Comey gathered his leadership team at the FBI to discuss whether he should be prepared to assure the president-elect that the FBI was not investigating him personally.

Comey testified that not everyone on his team agreed he should. Comey did not name the dissenter, but The Post has learned it was FBI general counsel James A. Baker. Comey testified that the member of his leadership team said that although it was true at the moment that Trump was not under investigation, it was possible that could change.

THE LEFT’S WAR ON THE FIRST AMENDMENT
… and the crisis of an illiberal media.

    July 28, 2017 Daniel Greenfield

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is an investigative journalist and writer focusing on the radical left and Islamic terrorism.

Once upon a time there was a liberal media. Like most left-leaning institutions it worked hard to prove its progressive premises. Democrats were good and Republicans bad. The police and the military were bad. Social welfare spending and diplomacy were good. Israel was bad and the PLO was good.

This was the thing we used to nostalgically call media bias.

We aren’t dealing with a liberal media anymore, but an illiberal media. The liberal media was content to use its institutional power as a megaphone to broadcast its views. But you could debate those views. Actual conservatives were allowed to write columns, and not just as a strategic attack on some element of the GOP the way it is now, and appear on television to offer opinions, and not just as punching bags.

The liberal media was convinced it would win the argument because it was right.

The illiberal media isn’t interested in winning an argument, but in silencing the opposition. It doesn’t just want to shout louder than you. It wants to use its institutional power to shut you up.

This isn’t just a media phenomenon. It’s what happened across the social spectrum when the people we used to call liberals became illiberal leftists. It’s why colleges censor controversial speakers and punish dissenting faculty. It’s why the environmental debate went from scientific discussions to calls to punish, fine and even jail those who question the left’s Luddite alarmism on Global Warming.

It’s why the debate over gay marriage shifted to punishing Christian bakers and florists......

Nearly every leftist cause these days is expressed by punishing someone. Arguments are won by force. The illiberal totalitarian lurking inside the liberal, as David Horowitz described it, is out of the closet.

It’s a lot easier to spot illiberalism in the press and academia because they depend on the free exchange of ideas. It’s hard to spot creeping totalitarianism at the DMV or in any government bureaucracy. But it’s really easy to see the change on a college campus or in the pages of your local newspaper.

And that’s where the iron curtain truly falls on the First Amendment.

If either of them read actual news outlets (try reading the Times of Israel or the Telegraph) they might see what's really going on around the world. Democracy is being attacked around the world and in important places by the right wing. Look at Israel where the press has been attacked for years. the latest example is the government effort to shut down al Jazeera. Look at Poland, Deuce's favorite, where the minority right wing government has been putting pressure on the press since taking over and is now attacking basic democracy by trying to take control of the judiciary.

You won't see these stories in frontpagemag or jihadwatch, yet that is were Bob goes to get his confirmation fix.

And Doug brags about never watching TV as if that is a big fucking achievement. Hilarious. Even FOX news has started to challenge the fiasco that is the Trump administration. According to Doug, the master of the big whine, that puts them squarely in the MSM category. His continuous whine about the MSM and fake news is the lazy man's way of argument if it can be called that. Never offers a defense or argument on any point simply shouts 'fake news' or 'MSM' as if that seals the discussion meanwhile he ignores any phony stories put out on the right. It's impossible for any rational person to take him seriously.

Doug and Bob, comfortably locked in their confirmation bias worlds whining that any alternate opinions are 'fake news'.

    What a couple of wankers.

  34. ICE May Be Getting Ready To Arrest Some Sanctuary City Mayors
JAZZ SHAWPosted at 10:01 am on July 28, 2017

Who’s ready for some good news on Friday? Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is out on the streets and hard at work, actually getting the job they are paid to do accomplished. They just wrapped up an eleven day operation in New York designed to get criminal illegal aliens off the streets and out of the country, netting a haul of more than one hundred such suspects. The agency described the details in a recent press release.

SEE ALSO: RIP: Heartbreaking goodbye for parents of Charlie Gard

An Ecuadorian citizen convicted of rape is among the 114 foreign nationals arrested during a recently concluded 11-day operation conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) deportation officers in New York targeting at-large criminal aliens, illegal re-entrants, and immigration fugitives.

Of those arrested during the enforcement action which ended Saturday, 82 had criminal histories, including prior convictions for sex crimes, drug offenses, and fraud. 15 have pending criminal charges including assault, larceny and sexual exploitation of a minor. 37 individuals have final orders of removal. Nine of those arrested were released from local custody on an active detainer.

That flurry of successful arrests obviously hasn’t rid the Big Apple of all their criminal illegal aliens, but they clearly got some of the worst offenders. Perhaps even more importantly, it sends a message to the rest of them currently remaining in the shadows that the days of having the government simply ignore their existence and being able to move about the city with ease are coming to an end.

But the acting head of ICE has even more plans and they don’t all involve the illegal aliens. Just last week we talked about how Thomas Homan called out the “most un-American sanctuary cities” and put them on notice. He’s now revealing more details as to what may be awaiting them. For starters, he’s talking about arresting the leaders of those cities on charges of violating federal anti-smuggling laws......

The Forgotten History of Britain's White Slaves in America
    By Janet Levy

Slavery in America, typically associated with blacks from Africa, was an enterprise that began with the shipping of more than 300,000 white Britons to the colonies.

This little known history is fascinatingly recounted in White Cargo (New York University Press, 2007). Drawing on letters, diaries, ship manifests, court documents, and government archives, authors Don Jordan and Michael Walsh detail how thousands of whites endured the hardships of tobacco farming and lived and died in bondage in the New World.

Following the cultivation in 1613 of an acceptable tobacco crop in Virginia, the need for labor accelerated. Slavery was viewed as the cheapest and most expedient way of providing the necessary work force. Due to harsh working conditions, beatings, starvation, and disease, survival rates for slaves rarely exceeded two years. Thus, the high level of demand was sustained by a continuous flow of white slaves from England, Ireland, and Scotland from 1618 to 1775, who were imported to serve America's colonial masters.

These white slaves in the New World consisted of street children plucked from London's back alleys, prostitutes, and impoverished migrants searching for a brighter future and willing to sign up for indentured servitude. Convicts were also persuaded to avoid lengthy sentences and executions on their home soil by enslavement in the British colonies. The much maligned Irish, viewed as savages worthy of ethnic cleansing and despised for their rejection of Protestantism, also made up a portion of America's first slave population, as did Quakers, Cavaliers, Puritans, Jesuits, and others.

Around 1618 at the start of their colonial slave trade, the English began by seizing and shipping to Virginia impoverished children, even toddlers, from London slums.....

  36. QUIRK, ASH UNDERGOING DEPROGRAMMING

It's a long hard slog but it must be done.

    THE TRUMP EFFECT
    Deprogramming the American mind.
    July 28, 2017 Mark Tapson 32

Six months into the Trump presidency, it seems safe to say that America has never had a political experience like the one he has brought to the White House. He has sparked a stark raving mad #resistance from the left that makes Bush Derangement Syndrome look fair and balanced. The news media hang on his every tweet. Hollywood is practically self-combusting in panic and disbelief. Climate change Cassandras are melting down. Illegal aliens are feeling the heat as well. He has even thrown his own party into turmoil. All of this hysterical disarray has resulted from the impact not of a movement or a Party, but of one man, Donald Trump.

Now a new documentary offers some thoughtful commentary on President Trump’s agitating arrival on the political scene. Produced, directed and edited by Agustin Blazquez, The Trump Effect: Deprogramming the American Mind features author and filmmaker Laurence Jarvik musing upon the rise of Trump and how this iconoclastic President is changing the way Americans think about ourselves and the world. Over the course of an hour of discussion, Jarvik’s primary thesis is that Trump is dismantling the politically correct ideology that has dominated American political discourse since 9/11, which will lead the way to a newfound freedom and unification of a country on its way to becoming great again.....

It is true Trump is having an effect on all of America, right and left.

However, the only thing he is exacerbating is the divide that already existed in this country.

The only ones he is actually moving are some of those who voted for him who are now leaving him due to buyer's remorse.

Trump has made no effort whatsoever to expands his base which according to polls has shrunk by about 13% since he was elected.

The article is correct in saying he has managed to even throw(n) his own party into turmoil. It's getting to the point where key members of that party are 'publicly' criticizing him and in some cases defying him.

The last sentence is absurd. It is true that that Trump is definitely anti-PC; however, the idea that the crude, ham-handed and bigoted way he expresses his policies will unify the country is all unicorns and fairy dust.

Suspect identified in leaking of classified info from the FBI
    By Thomas Lifson

Sara Carter of Circa is citing three anonymous sources in an exclusive report identifying a suspect in the investigation of the criminal leak of classified information from the FBI. Are you shocked to learn that the suspect is highly placed, highly regarded, and a close friend of James Comey? She writes:

FBI General Counsel James A. Baker is purportedly under a Department of Justice criminal investigation for allegedly leaking classified national security information to the media, according to multiple government officials close to the probe who spoke with Circa on the condition of anonymity.

FBI spokeswoman Carol Cratty said the bureau would not comment on Baker and would not confirm or deny any investigation.

This comes as Department of Justice Attorney General Jeff Sessions said he would soon be making an announcement regarding the progress of leak investigations. A DOJ official declined to comment on Circa's inquiry into Baker but did say, the planned announcement by Sessions is part of the overall "stepped up efforts on leak investigations."

Baker, like Mueller and Comey, seems to have accumulated a lot of positive adjectives, such as "distinguished," from his Beltway colleagues.

Baker was appointed to the FBI's general counsel by Comey in 2014 and has had a long and distinguished history within the intelligence community.

After working as a federal prosecutor in the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice during the 1990s, he joined the Office of Intelligence Policy and Review In 1996, according to his FBI bio. (https://archives.fbi.gov/archives/news/pressrel/press-releases/james-a.-baker-appointed-as-fbis-general-counsel).

In 2006 Baker received the George H.W. Bush Award for Excellence in counter-terrorism – the CIA's highest counter-terrorism award, according to his biography. During Baker's long and distinguished career he received the "NSA's Intelligence Under Law Award; the NSA Director's Distinguished Service Medal; and DOJ's highest award – the Edmund J. Randolph Award."

He sounds like quite the public servant. An image like Comey's and Mueller's.

Never forget that Baker may be totally innocent of leaking, and it may be others:

A federal law enforcement official with knowledge of ongoing internal investigations in the bureau told Circa, "the bureau is scouring for leakers and there's been a lot of investigations."

Baker will no doubt have the full protection of the safeguards built into our criminal justice system should he be indicted. The leaks will not stop until prison sentences are handed down for some "distinguished" members of the Deep State.....

As Venezuela crisis climaxes, where's Rex?
    By Monica Showalter

You know that Venezuela's crisis is coming to a climax when the U.S. embassy in Caracas orders all families out of the hellhole, obviously preparing for something horrific.

Yet strangely, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been AWOL from the scene, missing meetings, making no statements.

One can only hope he's being that way because he knows that something big is coming down. It could be that. Because as much as it may annoy and disappoint us to see that he's not out front on the situation in Venezuela – where its communist Chavista rulers under President Nicolas Maduro are holding a rigged referendum on July 30 to turn Venezuela into a Cuba-style communist state – you can bet it's annoying the Chavistas even more. They have no idea what he will do based on his non-statements and non-appearances and apparent disengagement with their issue. They may have been lulled into thinking nothing is going on.

The Sacramento Bee speculates that Tillerson is preoccupied elsewhere, generally with the Gulf Crisis and the Middle East. He may also be staying out of the spotlight to avoid charges of conflict of interest from the likes of Swampland opposition research firm Fusion GPS, which has Chavista clients.

The one thing you can't say is that Tillerson doesn't know all about that hellhole dump, which he frontally confronted and did a number on when he was chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil in the 2000s. Unlike other oil firms, Tillerson didn't let Chavista expropriators take his company's property without a whimper – he sued the thugs in court and effectively bankrupted them. After that, he thumbed his nose at the Chavistas and had ExxonMobil explore for oil off Guyana, in an area claimed by the Venezuelan government. So we know that Tillerson knows about the place.

What we don't know is about him. We have to hope he is so on top of it that he doesn't have time to make appearances for reporters.

Once again, you show evidence of that simple mind we all consider so childishly charming.

There are still numerous steps that can be taken before nuclear war.

The sanctions are a start with NK but Trump needs to start with China. He has done zip with Xi. He met with him in Mar-a-Lago and instead of talking about all the complaints we have with the country both economically, militarily, on human rights, he settles on what he thought was some kind of understanding that China would put pressure on the NORKS to dial back their nuclear program. Obviously, he thought wrong.

The war of words between India and China, is heating up over disputed borders, India ally Budistan, Chinese ally Pakistan, water rights, Tibet, you name it, to the point that it is starting to look like a 1962 redux only this times both sides have nuclear weapons. It's unlikely China is looking for conflicts on two fronts.

This could be a good time to start putting pressure on China to help out with NK.

If a hard push on the diplomatic side doesn't work more you always have more drastic alternatives in you back pocket.

This is another area where Trump has downgraded out position. As noted, he has promised much yet delivered little. In addition, he has cut the legs out from in under the diplomats. He has cut State Department budgets by a third. Even Mattis has gone on record as saying this is a big mistake, that war is a last resort and should only be used when all diplomatic efforts have failed.

Tillerson is pissed because his first choice for Deputy Secretary of State, experienced foreign policy expert Elliot Abrams, was vetoed by Trump. Rex is still operating with a skeleton staff with many political positions not even nominated yet.

....There are a few showstoppers from Kushner’s testimony that make it obvious to any fair-minded, thinking person that there was no collusion with Russia. In his own words, Kushner makes it clear that his actions were innocent but, at times, misguided and ill-conceived. He plainly states he had “hardly any” contacts with Russians during the campaign and found his June 2016 meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and the infamous Russian lawyer to be an absolute “waste of time.”

Democrats and their allies in the media have exhausted themselves building a scandalous narrative surrounding the Russian lawyer meeting, but according to Kushner, the meeting was so useless that he “actually emailed an assistant from the meeting after [he] had been there for ten or so minutes and wrote ‘Can u pls call me on my cell? Need excuse to get out of meeting.”’ Maybe the collusion didn’t take very long, or maybe he realized what the lawyer had to say was a useless farce and he wanted to get on with his day.

Much to the dismay of Trump’s haters, Kushner’s account of events even further proves just how far the media has stretched the collusion story....

    North Korea Isn't Backing Down

North Korea test-fired its second intercontinental ballistic missile within a month on Friday, a provocation that heightens pressure on the U.S. and China to find ways to rein in Kim Jong Un’s nuclear ambitions.

After the Pentagon and South Korea’s presidential office assessed that the missile was another ICBM, the U.S. said its top general called his South Korean counterpart to discuss “military response options.” The missile traveled about 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), according to Captain Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the missile, which was launched late on Friday night, flew for about 45 minutes and landed in the country’s exclusive economic zone. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said it reached an altitude of about 3,700 kilometers, which is almost 1,000 kilometers higher than the July 4 test.

Melissa Hanham, a researcher at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies in California, said the launch showed progress toward a missile capable of hitting U.S. cities such as Denver or Chicago.

"It’s getting close to New York," Hanham said by email.
She added that initial data from the test suggested that if such a projectile were launched toward the U.S., it could travel about 10,000 kilometers.

      Trump contributes to the danger.

Everyone agrees if anyone can apply pressure on NK it is China. But what does Trump do in response to China doing zip on NK? He gives them a big trade deal. Now, they will be allowed to process chicken and ship it back to the US. Talk about a health and safety catastrophe. I wouldn't eat a damn thing coming out of China. Most people wouldn't if they knew where it was coming from. How many stories have we seen of food from China contaminated by chemicals, chewed up plastic, even metal parts. The place is a pig sty. All the water polluted. Health and safety rules are non-existent or ignored.

This is a shame since we, me and my wife, eat a lot of chicken. But will it be labelled as processed in China? Your dreaming. You can't even get a GMO label on products.

The worst part Trump brags about this shit as a big achievement.

Oh Yes: Kid Rock 49, Debbie Stabenow 46

The bad news: We have now well and truly entered the era of the celebrity political candidate. Schwarzenegger could be ignored as an idiosyncrasy of California politics. Al Franken could be written off as the lucky winner of one of the tightest Senate elections in U.S. history in a blue-wave year. Trump could be dismissed as sui generis, a billionaire TV star who caught a populist wave just as it was starting to crest. But when “the pimp of the nation” is leading a Democratic incumbent in a battleground Senate race, there’s no going back. President Gary Busey is no longer out of the question.

The good news: Given the state of the Republican Party under Trump, adding Kid Rock to the Senate will raise the dignity of the GOP on average.

There’s more bad news, actually. For reasons known only to itself, Trafalgar apparently hasn’t released any crosstabs for this poll. How’s KR doing among independents? Is he making inroads among younger adults in Michigan, traditionally a Democratic demographic? Your guess is as good as mine. But there’s also more good news for Kid Rock fans. If “Trafalgar Group” rings a bell, that’s because they’re the same pollster that predicted Trump’s victory last fall with eerie accuracy and caught Karen Handel’s late surge in the Georgia special election in June. Last November, when every other pollster had Hillary winning Michigan by three to six points, Trafalgar dropped numbers in the final days of the race putting Trump ahead 48.5 to 46.8. He won the state by three-tenths of a point. They were the only pollster after mid-August to show him ahead there before he shocked the world on Election Night. There was reason to be skeptical of the other pollster that’s surveyed the Michigan Senate race so far, but don’t doubt Trafalgar on Michigan.

They also polled the primary. Dude:

That’s a 42-point lead over veteran, social conservative, and businessman John James. How often is a total novice practically guaranteed his party’s nomination in a contested Senate primary in a swing state? I’ve been telling myself that the “Kid Rock for Senate” thing is half publicity stunt, half earnest misdirection for a good cause (a voter-registration project, specifically). But, whether he meant it this way or not, it’s turned into a trial balloon and everything right now points towards him being a surefire primary winner and legit threat to Stabenow. Plus, I’ve learned my lesson after writing 20-30 “TRUMP WILL BE OUT BY NEXT MONTH” posts in summer 2015. The celebrities are coming and there’s no stoppin’ ’em, thanks to Trumpmania. American politics is a zombie movie now: You may take out a celebrity candidate here and there, but eventually their sheer numbers will overwhelm us.

One bit of advice for KR, should he choose to run. He should use the phrase “shattin’ in their pantaloons” at every opportunity on the trail, preferably as a catchphrase. It’s poetry.

  49. .

I like KR. He is a big booster for Detroit. He drinks beer. Hangs out at a lot of the local sports bars. He is well liked around town. He is always doing charity concerts around town for various local charities. He will be the headline act opening up the new Little Ceasar Arena, new home of the Red Wings and now the Pistons.

That said. I've heard his stump speech and don't really care for it. Every other word started with F. He was part of that trio that visited Trump in the WH that included Ted Nugent. After a recent shooting incident, Nugent indicated he was going to tone down the rhetoric. KR doesn't seem to have got the message. If he runs, a big if, I think I'll pass on the boy.
