COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

The Leader of GOP Likuds Force, Bibi Netanyahu, is Losing His Marbles

JERUSALEM — Benjamin Netanyahu launched an 11th-hour attempt to rally right-wing support and retain power Sunday as he claimed an international conspiracy was attempting to topple his government.
Speaking ahead of a rally in Tel Aviv just two days before a general election that polls show his Likud party to be in danger of losing, Mr. Netanyahu said there was a concerted “worldwide” effort to unseat him.
He accused the international media and “leftist organizations” of co-ordinating a plot funded to the tune of tens of millions of dollars. The goal was to install a left-wing government led by the Zionist Union opposition, which, he said, would bow to foreign pressure by evacuating settlements, surrendering territory in the West Bank, and dividing Jerusalem, which both Israel and the Palestinians claim as their capital.
In an extraordinary message posted on Facebook, the prime minister wrote: “The government of the right is in danger. Leftist activists and the foreign and international media are conspiring to get Tzipi and Buji [Tzipi Livni and Isaac Herzog, the joint leaders of the Zionist Union] elected via illegitimate means, using innuendo and foreign money.
“Those foreign organizations understand that if Tzipi and Buji are in charge, they will give up everything. They’ll withdraw to the 1967 boundaries and they will divide Jerusalem — just as Tzipi and Buji promised they would do. They know that unlike Tzipi and Buji, the Likud and I will never surrender to pressure.”
In the message he also implicated Noni Mozes, the publisher of Israel’s biggest-selling newspaper, Yedioth Ahronoth, in the alleged campaign, which he labelled “Anyone but Bibi [Mr Netanyahu’s popular nickname].”
He told an Israeli radio station that the campaign against him was being funded from Scandinavia, while Yuval Steintz, his close ally and Israel’s intelligence and strategic affairs minister, said money was also flowing in from the United States.
Mr. Netanyahu’s claims were bolstered by Israel Hayom, a mass circulation free newspaper that supports him and is owned by Sheldon Adelson, an American casino tycoon who is close to the prime minister.
The paper reported that a U.S. Senate committee planned to investigate allegations that an American non-profit organization, OneVoice, had broken the law by funding another group that had been campaigning for a change of government in Israel.
The allegations of foreign interference — whatever their substance — was calculated to appeal to nationalist voters, many of whom are believed to be considering deserting Likud for smaller right-wing parties.
Mr. Netanyahu’s desire to woo voters on the right was illustrated by his decision to speak at last night’s rally, to which thousands of settlers were expected to be bused in from the West Bank.

  1. The Netanyahu campaign assumed the prime minister would get a bump in support after his speech before a joint meeting of Congress two weeks ago, when he directly challenged President Obama and warned that the United States was about to sign a disastrous pact that would not halt Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

His supporters boasted of his Churchillian skills as a master orator. Their high hopes were raised as a rapturous Congress gave him repeated standing ovations.

Yet the speech did little to move the electorate – even as it angered the White House and congressional Democrats and undermined bipartisan relations between Israel and its closest ally.

Will Hillary Break The Criminal Conduct Glass Ceiling?
    By Geoffrey P Hunt

No one has ever been nominated as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president while under indictment, or having been charged with a felony then acquitted before the election, let alone be a convicted felon.

For over two centuries, only a handful of sitting members of Congress have been expelled after being convicted for committing a felony. Several have won re-election while under indictment. At least one was re-elected as a convicted felon.

Voters in Massachusetts deserve a special category of ignominy having sent Barney Frank to Congress for twelve terms after his implication in a male prostitution ring; for re-electing Gerry Studds six times after his censure by Congress for having gay sex with an underage congressional page; and of course for returning Ted Kennedy to the US Senate five times, after he narrowly escaped a grand jury indictment over Mary Jo Kopechne’s asphyxiation death in his abandoned Oldsmobile off Chappaquiddick Island. Massachusetts is the role model, notwithstanding stiff competition from Illinois, where Democratic Party ideology and loyalty excuses criminal conduct.

While criminal conduct, and even convicted felons, have darkened the US Capitol and numerous state houses, and two modern presidents have been stung by their criminal conduct in office -- one resigned in disgrace, the other was impeached -- we have been spared having to face a major party presidential candidate with a criminal record...........

    3. Syrian Transition Would Have to Be Negotiated With Bashar al-Assad, Says John Kerry

US Secretary of State John Kerry said the United States would have to negotiate with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad for a political transition in Syria and was exploring ways with other countries to pressure him into agreeing to talks.

But State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said later that Kerry, in an interview with CBS News that aired on Sunday, was not specifically referring to Assad. She reiterated that Washington would never negotiate with the Syrian leader.

Harf added: "By necessity, there has always been a need for representatives of the Assad regime to be a part of this process. It has never been and would not be Assad who would negotiate - and the Secretary was not saying that today."

Washington has long insisted that Assad must be replaced through a negotiated, political transition, although the rise of a common enemy, hardline militant group Islamic State, appears to have slightly softened the West's stance toward him.

In the CBS interview, Kerry did not repeat the standard US line that Assad had lost all legitimacy and had to go. Syria's civil war is now into its fifth year, with hundreds of thousands killed and millions of Syrians displaced.

"We have to negotiate in the end," Kerry said when asked whether the United States would be willing to negotiate with Assad. "We've always been willing to negotiate in the context of the Geneva I process," he added, referring to a 2012 conference that called for a negotiated transition to end the conflict.

Kerry said the United States and other countries, which he did not name, were exploring ways to reignite the diplomatic process to end the conflict in Syria.

"What we're pushing for is to get him (Assad) to come and do that, and it may require that there be increased pressure on him of various kinds in order to do that," Kerry said.

"We've made it very clear to people that we are looking at increased steps that can help bring about that pressure," he added.

A nothing article. If you actually read it nothing has changed in the US position except the chance they they may put more pressure on the Assad 'administration' to bring it to the bargaining table. They are still demanding that there be a political transition where Assad leaves. Were Assad to agree with that he would be a dead man.

Hell, the US and it's pals refuse to have Assad (or even Iran) in the talks but they bring in umbrella group who supposedly 'represents' the Syrian opposition even though they are not even in Syria and have only the most tenuous ties with any groups that are there.

He shall have Power, by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, to make Treaties, provided two thirds of the Senators present concur; and he shall nominate, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, shall appoint Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, Judges of the supreme Court, and all other Officers of the United States, whose Appointments are not herein otherwise provided for, and which shall be established by Law: but the Congress may by Law vest the Appointment of such inferior Officers, as they think proper, in the President alone, in the Courts of Law, or in the Heads of Departments.

The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session.

That’s what Cruz, the Republican senator from Texas and potential White House candidate, told New Hampshire voters on Sunday. Cruz, the Associated Press writes, said unlimited political cash would give rank-and-file conservative activists greater sway in picking their representatives, including the president. “I believe everyone here has a right to speak out on politics as effectively as possible,” Cruz told a voter who asked him about the role of the super-rich in politics. In the Senate, Cruz has proposed lifting all campaign contributions in exchange for immediate disclosure.

He knew people like you and didn't like them at all.

  15. The Zionist Union’s Tzipi Livni announced Monday evening that she would give up the rotation of the premiership with the slate’s leader, Isaac Herzog, an agreement the two made months ago when her Hatnua party merged with his Labor Party.

In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the party was “panicking,” while Yesh Atid party leader Yair Lapid and Jewish Home party leader Naftali Bennett said the move indicated the Zionist Union was planning to form a unity government with Netanyahu’s Likud. That claim was subsequently rejected by Herzog as “claptrap.”

The bombshell came 12 hours before polling stations were set to open, in an apparent last-ditch effort to garner additional votes.

Livni said the rotation agreement ought not interfere with her party’s main task: replacing Netanyahu’s Likud party.

In a response to the announcement, Netanyahu told Channel 2 that the decision reflected the Zionist Union’s “panic” — an accusation echoed by Herzog, who in turn said Netanyahu was the one “panicking.”

Netanyahu told the TV station that the move proved two things: “One, that they’re lying. Either they lied earlier [when they announced the rotation], or they’re lying now. And the second thing is that they can’t deal with any pressure. They can’t deal with the pressure of the polls, how will they be able to deal with international pressure?”

Shortly after the announcement, Bennett predicted that the decision to give up the rotation signaled that the Zionist Union would form a unity government with Likud, implying that a vote for his right-wing party could help prevent such an outcome. Lapid, similarly, told the TV station the move signaled that a national unity government between the two large parties, as well as the ultra-Orthodox parties, was in the works.

Herzog denied the allegations as “nonsense” in a telephone interview with Channel 2. He said the decision was not a matter of “last-minute pressure,” and said “Livni nobly and bravely told me this initially on Saturday.

“Ultimately, she approached me today and told me honestly — if the rotation is in some way an obstacle to the establishment of the government, I won’t stand in the way,” he said.

Livni, No. 2 on the Zionist Union list, had initially agreed to a two-year rotation of the premiership if the Zionist Union was tasked with forming the coalition. The Hatnua-Labor merger was criticized by members of the Labor Party, who said that Livni was getting more than she offered to the party. However, the political union, and subsequent re-branding of the party, sparked a surge in the polls.

On Sunday, Haaretz reported that during a Zionist Union campaign meeting, Livni said she was willing to forgo the rotation. But strategist Reuven Adler opined that such a move, announced so close to the election, would be detrimental.

Two hours before the announcement, Herzog emphatically denied that the two were set to cancel the rotation agreement. “There was no discussion about [whether to cancel the rotation] in the past week. It’s not on the agenda, period. The partnership between Livni and me brought us to [where we are] today. It is an important partnership,” Herzog told Army Radio.

The Likud party had bashed the alliance between Herzog and Livni, a former Likud member herself. Throughout the campaign, the party repeatedly commented on Livni’s “disappearance” from the public eye, a move that she explained several weeks ago as a tactic to keep the spotlight on Herzog, who, she said, was less well-known than she.

  17. The Palestinians are ISIS of the West Bank and Gaza.

No SANE person would GIVE up land to them. After all, America is flying 9000 miles across the globe to BOMB the very same head cutters……

Glad to hear it's making you crazy….

  19. Israel and ISIS look to me to be the "two peas in the pod" in the Middle East. Both are trying to take other people's territory, and property. Both kill somewhat indiscriminately, and, to top it off, the two are militarily allied in Syria.

It doesn't surprise me that you can't see the difference between black and white or distinguish up and down, either.

Stick with alternative energies and don't a fool of yourself any longer.

    It's embarrassing.

  22. Speaking of "embarrassing:" It appears that 20,000 "WARRIORS OF GODtm" have gone on strike, and refuse to go against a couple of hundred headcutters without air support from The Great Satan.

ISIS Maintains Hold in Tikrit as Iraq Pauses Offensive

    By ANNE BARNARDMARCH 16, 2015

BAGHDAD — Islamic State militants on Monday continued to hold parts of the city of Tikrit against a much larger pro-government force after two weeks of battle, as Iraqi officials said they were pausing their offensive to call for reinforcements and to preserve property and civilian lives.

The slowing of the operation came amid reports that the tomb of Saddam Hussein in the nearby village of Awja, a politically and emotionally charged symbol for all sides, had been destroyed in the recent fighting. Its roof appeared to have collapsed, with rubble strewn around the area, footage from The Associated Press showed.

Iraqi officials and allied militia leaders have been saying since last week that they are in control of the battlefield. They said that they had surrounded the handful of Islamic State fighters remaining in Tikrit, and that full government control would be restored there in a matter of days.

There has been intense international pressure to avoid civilian casualties and revenge attacks on people or property in an offensive by a mostly Shiite force in a hub of the so-called Sunni triangle. Around two-thirds of the pro-government force is made up of the mostly Shiite militias now known as popular mobilization forces.

As the days pass, critics are asking why the government’s 30,000-strong force has been unable to dislodge the last Islamic State fighters — and whether the reduced pace is a bad sign for future efforts to root the militants out of their self-declared capital, the much larger city of Mosul.

“There is a minimum amount of Daesh fighters in Tikrit,” said Alaa Makki, a former lawmaker and a member of the mostly Sunni Islamic Party, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS or ISIL. “They are controlling the situation there — wow!”....

  24. >>>>To the north, Kurdish pesh merga forces reported continued progress against the Islamic State. Miryawan Abdullah, a major general in the forces, said that on Monday morning, the forces had taken over three villages along the road between Baghdad and Kirkuk, and were working to defuse explosives left behind by the militant group.<<<<

Quirk, who has joined the Pesh Merga out of boredom, is in this area. He reported the other day that the unit he commands came under a chlorine gas attack from ISIS, but instead of withdrawing he led his men forward through the gas cloud, ordering them to hold their noses and close their mouths, and when they came out on the other side they routed the attackers.

"It was magnificent, Bobbo", he wrote.

  25. The numbers of the head cutters have been underestimated all along. Most people in the area really don't much like the idea of being ruled by the Iranians, is my guess.

  26. The body of Saddam has been snatched from his tomb in Tikrit and hustled away to safety.

  27. I am hoping Quirk is able to secure the body, and sell it at auction in Detroit. He had mentioned something along these lines.....
