COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  3. There is a solution to the disaster in Syria, stop the US, Saudi Arabia, the UK, Jordan and other countries giving the rebels guns, its become very apparent that the actual rebels are now outnumbered by Al Qaeda most likely working for their US masters, the Syrian spring has failed and only a madman would support its continuance.

  4. Good morning all!

Never thought I'd wake to the story of Syrian Fighter planes bombing it's own 2 major cities, fighting with the turks on one side and the jordanians on the other...

Now the interesting turn of events?

The moslem brotherhood (whom the WH actually supports) is taking over the rebel's fight. Of course the politically correct call them "al qaeda" as to not show the connection of Egyptian's islamists.

Iranian fighters (sharpshooters) are kidnapped in syria by rebels, palestinians are being bombed by assay's troops...

    Just a fun packed morning...

Iran and Russia is all in to save assad... Arabia and the Egyptians (moslem brotherhood) and jihadists are all streaming cash and weapons in... Turks are supporting some rebels and bombing some kurdish areas...

ANd the quiet story that no one is talking about is the fact that the green movement in Iran is blowing up oil assets...

Syria's assay's troops would have run out of weapons and ammo MONTHS ago if russia and iran had not resupplied them....

So millions and millions of dollars are being spent to bring us the real summer games...

get your popcorn folks this aint even close to being over...

    3. .

Iranian fighters (sharpshooters) are kidnapped in syria by rebels, palestinians are being bombed by assay's troops...

"The identities and motives of the captives could not be independently verified. Iran has insisted that they were innocent pilgrims returning from a Shiite shrine on the southern edge of Damascus, and some rebel groups have not embraced the kidnapping or the theory laid out by the fighters in the video. Col. Malik al-Kurdi, a deputy commander of the Free Syrian Army — one of several competing umbrella groups involved in the fighting — said the brigade involved in the kidnapping appeared to have been acting on its own and did not tell the Free Syrian Army about the operation."

We all believe what we want to believe. The question becomes how hard do you want to believe it.

    4. No doubt there are thousands of iranian pilgrims in syria. but my reading of arabic sites, translated by google of course said otherwise.

believe what you wish, either way? the idea of iranians (pilgrims or snipers) being kidnapped by syrians? makes my day..

      I could care less....

  5. " Israel arose as a secular, social democratic country inspired by Western European democracies. With time, however, its core values have become entirely different. Israel today is a religious, capitalist state. Its religiosity is defined by the most extreme Orthodox interpretations. Its capitalism has erased much of the social solidarity of the past, with the exception of a few remaining vestiges of a welfare state. Israel defines itself as a “Jewish and democratic state.” However, because Israel has never created a system of checks and balances between these two sources of authority, they are closer than ever to a terrible clash.

In the early years of statehood, the meaning of the term “Jewish” was national and secular. In the eyes of Israel’s founding fathers, to be a Jew was exactly like being an Italian, Frenchman or American. Over the years, this elusive concept has changed; today, the meaning of “Jewish” in Israel is mainly ethnic and religious. With the elevation of religious solidarity over and above democratic authority, Israel has become more fundamentalist and less modern, more separatist and less open to the outside world. I see the transformation in my own family. My father, one of the founders of the state of Israel and of the National Religious Party, was an enlightened rabbi and philosopher. Many of the younger generation are far less open, however; some are ultra-Orthodox or ultranationalist settlers."

    ...

"BUT something went wrong in the operating system of Jewish democracy. We never gave much thought to the Palestinian Israeli citizens within the Jewish-democratic equation. We also never tried to separate the synagogue and the state. If anything, we did the opposite. Moreover, we never predicted the evil effects of brutally controlling another people against their will. Today, all the things that we neglected have returned and are chasing us like evil spirits."

Ash, you personally know NOTHING of Israel, it's politics or it's peoples.

To take an article from the NY times as proof?

      Because one person wrote it?

Interesting, you don't put as much weight when CURRENT leaders of Israel write letters to the NYT's so why should we put any weight to your posted article?

    1. The Al Jazeera bombing memo is an unpublished memorandum made within the British government which purports to be the minutes of a discussion between United States President George W. Bush and Prime Minister Tony Blair. The Daily Mirror published a story on its front page on 22 November 2005 claiming that the memo quotes Bush speculating about a U.S. bombing raid on Al Jazeera world headquarters in the Qatari capital Doha and other locations. The story claims that Blair persuaded Bush to take no action. wiki

Hmmm...I guess it was Tony talked him out of it.

  10. This is interesting -

At first blush, Avraham Burg might seem to have the right credentials to write an opinion piece in the New York Times about Israel's past, present and future -- former speaker of Israel's parliament; author of a book about the Holocaust and chairman of the" Center for Renewal of Democracy." At least, that's the way the Times sums up his bona fides in the Sunday Review Section of its Aug. 5 edition atop an article titled, "Israel's Fading Democracy."

But don't be fooled by those Burg bio credits. Once upon a time, Burg rose to political prominence in leftist Israeli politics. But no more. In recent years, he has become increasingly isolated as an anti-Israel, anti-Zionist crank who blinds himself to existential dangers faced by his country from the likes of Iran, Hezbb'llah and Hamas, and instead unleashes a flood of blame-Israel screeds.

  11. Syrian government media on Sunday reported ongoing military operations against "armed terrorists," the regime's name for the rebel militias, but it didn't specify death tolls. State television reported that army units had engaged Turkish and Arab Gulf fighters in battles in Aleppo, leaving "several" dead.

In the rebel video, a camera pans to show a group of weary, middle-aged Iranians who all appear to be in good health. However, one of the militia members in the video promises harsh reprisals against any foreigners acting on behalf of the Syrian regime.

"We promise Iran and all those who support this regime… We will strike at all [Iranian] targets in Syria," another rebel says in the video. "The fate of all Iranians who operate in Syria will be the same as those we have here, either captive or killed, God willing."

  12. The priceless treasures of Syria's history – of Crusader castles, ancient mosques and churches, Roman mosaics, the renowned "Dead Cities" of the north and museums stuffed with antiquities – have fallen prey to looters and destruction by armed rebels and government militias as fighting envelops the country. While the monuments and museums of the two great cities of Damascus and Aleppo have so far largely been spared, reports from across Syria tell of irreparable damage to heritage sites that have no equal in the Middle East.

    ...

Maybe we "Westerners" have a bit of a nerve to denounce the destruction of Syria's antiquity. From the Roman destruction of Carthage to RAF Bomber Command's pounding of Hamburg, Dresden and a hundred medieval German cities to rubble, we have been smashing our history to bits for centuries.

    ...

This is why it is so important to have an inventory of the treasures of national museums and ancient cities. Emma Cunliffe, a PhD researcher at Durham University, published the first detailed account of the state of Syrian archeological sites in her Damage to the Soul of Syria: Syria's Cultural Heritage in Conflict, listing the causes of destruction, the use of sites as military positions and what can only be called merciless looting.

  13. Even if you take a negative view of the Occupy political program, and even if you're unpersuaded by the authors’ appeal to international law, the report should give pause to anyone who cares about safeguarding free speech in the U.S.'s preeminent metropolis. It not only charges the NYPD with “undermin[ing] basic assembly and expression freedoms," it also alleges that the agency has "presented a threat to the safety of New Yorkers.”

The NYPD's behavior during the Occupy protests "seems designed to make exercising the right to protest in New York City as unpleasant and frightening as possible and is, moreover, a tremendous waste of scarce public resources," wrote Taylor Pendergrass, Senior Staff Attorney at New York Civil Liberties Union.

That's arguably more cause for concern than the occupation of a city park.

  15. Federal investigators released alarming details about controller errors that nearly caused a midair collision last year between a heavily loaded American Airlines jet and a military cargo plane off the East Coast, highlighting problems at New York's premier traffic-control facility.

A report by the National Transportation Safety Board disclosed mistakes and miscommunications by air-traffic controllers, ending with the two big planes speeding on converging courses in the dark off the coast of New York. The jets, both at 22,000 feet, barreled directly toward each other for at least a minute without pilots seeing the other aircraft...
