COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Busta: And if they run up in your crib again

Ramp: Any nigga try to set you up

Spliff: Yo let me set this shit off first, what!?
I got your back

VERY PRESIDENTIAL.  I AM SURE YOU WILL AGREE. OF COURSE, IF YOU DO, I GOT YOUR BACK.

  1. Why pretend? A lot of people voted for Obama because he was seen as a transitional figure that was going to bring us into a post-racial era. Obama is about as post-racial as a smooth jazz version of Bull Conners.

  3. BTW, all three of the Mexican Presidential Candidates say they've had all they want of the "War on Drugs." All three say they'll pull the Army out of the mess.

My wife heard a news story today on heroin use. Seems that in a certain period (not sure how long) there wer 78 American deaths in Afghanistan. In that same time period, there were over 3000 deaths in Massechusetts from heroin overdose. Here in Detroit, one dose of heroin is going for $6.

I still think there is room for legalizing marijuana; but the more stories like these I hear(and there have been a lot of them lately), the less I am likely to push for legalizing hard drugs.

  4. In New York and parts of California, developers and real estate agents also are looking to tap into a growing class of Chinese and Russian millionaires who are entering property markets. Wei Min Tan, a Manhattan real estate agent with Rutenberg Realty, represented a buyer from Singapore who narrowly lost out to a different foreign buyer on a $1.6 million condo in the city's Flatiron district.

"People realize Manhattan prices are not going lower," said Mr. Tan, who says demand from foreigners has spiked in the past two months. Yan Yan Zhang, a real-estate agent in Beverly Hills, Calif., estimates that around one third of her sales are to Asian buyers.

She has attended marketing events in Beijing organized to showcase luxury U.S. listings to affluent buyers. "They line up with $2 million cash ready to buy the right property," she said.

  5. n an excerpt from his just published book, Confront and Conceal: Obama’s Secret Wars and Surprising Use of American Power, from which the cyber war story was adapted for the Times, Sanger recounts how Pentagon officials “fumed” when White House counterterrorism czar John Brennan apparently gave away “operational secrets never shared outside the tribe.” Defense Secretary Robert Gates confronted the senior administration official he perhaps believed in the best position to enact, or at least forward, his recommendation for a “new strategic communications approach.”

    ...

In other words, Defense Secretary Robert Gates thought President Obama’s national security adviser was responsible, directly or indirectly, for the leaks. And if Donilon is responsible, the buck stops with President Obama.

To paraphrase the president, that his White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive. And it’s wrong.

      Gates on leaks,

●Congress and the media: “You know, in 4 1/2 years [at the Pentagon] I never had a line outside my office of senior executives coming. . .to tell me all the problems in their service or in their organization.”

“Some of the biggest problems that I acted on were first brought to my attention by an inquiry from Congress or an article in the press.

I found out about [deplorable conditions at] Walter Reed from a series in The Washington Post by Dana Priest” and Anne Hull. “I found out about the problem with the lack of armored vehicles in Iraq through a USA Today story. So I would say when there is an article critical of us. . . don’t go into a defensive crouch. . . maybe you’ve just been handed a gift to solve a problem you didn’t know existed.”

[A gift? Yeah, that’s the usual reaction we get after an expose.]

●Meetings strategies: Gates didn’t speak a lot in meetings. “Most people in this town just can’t hear enough of themselves, so my view was let them talk.”

Both Bush and Obama “used to complain to me. . . about leaks. I said, ‘Well, why do you let all those people take notes? For God’s sake, they’re all sitting there writing their books as you’re talking.’”

I always kind of liked Gates. He was a hell of a lot better than most.

  7. Symon Hill, from the Christian think-tank Ekklesia, commented: "The Church of England has missed an opportunity to move on from the defensiveness which has characterised many debates over same-sex marriage. This is particularly disappointing given that many of the Church of England's own members are far more positive about same-sex marriage than this official statement suggests.”

He added: “Marriage has been redefined many times throughout history. When married women were given the right to own property in 1882, there were those who argued that the new law undermined marriage.

    ...

Ben Summerskill, chief executive of the gay rights group Stonewall, added: “It's an important issue of religious freedom that any denomination should be free to decline to celebrate long-term same-sex partnerships. Conversely, that means that a Church should not be entitled to prevent other institutions or the state from recognising them either.”

  8. President Obama’s latest campaign talking point on the economy is that the Republicans in Congress are responsible for laying off teachers, police officers, and firefighters.

    ...

The focus on inputs rather than outputs. President Obama is concentrating on how many teachers, police, and firefighters there are. What matters more to me is whether the students in schools are learning, what the crime rate is, and how many fire-related fatalities there are.

    ...

The stasis. For a guy who ran on a promise of “change,” Mr. Obama sure seems alarmed by minor fluctuations in teacher headcount. The president talked about the decline in teacher employment in Pennsylvania, though he did not say how much of it was owing to retirements and attrition and how much was attributable to layoffs.

  13. The Rufus/Obama economy -

Americans’ wealth plummeted 40 percent from 2007 to 2010, Federal Reserve says.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/fed-americans-wealth-dropped-40-percent/2012/06/11/gJQAlIsCVV_story.html

Another four years of this shit and we'll be worth zero, thanks to Zero. (and the people that support him)

Thankfully no one around here is brain dead enough yet to actually support the guy, excepting maybe Ash of course. Rufus is a special case and has an alibi of sorts, his intoxication with ethanol and all things 'renewable' has led to a abandonment of the rational faculty. He can't be held responsible. Not here, or in a court of law.

Since then, the stock market has come all the way back, and real estate has leveled off.

  16. Here's a nice memorable line -

Romney adviser: You “need time-lapse photography” to see the growth in the economy

Isn't that the truth. Alas, I doubt whether Romney or anyone anywhere has the magic to make it all better in the short space of a couple years. Maybe we will have double digit unemployment as far out there as we can see. Obama though is poison in so many ways, the economic part of it is only a small part of that negative pie.
