Muslims Training with US Army Attempt Kidnapping of 12 yr Old Girl in Missouri – Authorities Drop Charges

I realize the Prophet (pbuh) went in for the pre-pubescent girls, but it doesn't fly here in America.

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. • Pulaski County authorities have dropped charges against two foreign military officers who were training at Fort Leonard Wood when they were arrested.

The Rolla Daily News reports that Mohammed Mahmoud Omar Mefleh, of Jordan, and Antoine Chlela, of Lebanon, were charged in October with enticement of a child and harassment. Court records say the men allegedly approached a 12-year-old girl at a bus stop and asked her to enter their vehicle.

Pulaski County prosecutor Kevin Hillman said Friday that the charges were dropped as part of an agreement that includes the men paying the cost of their incarceration. Hillman says they were taken by Fort Leonard Wood officials, and he expects them to be out of the U.S. by Monday. Under terms of the plea, they will not be allowed to return to the country. The men were taking courses at Fort Leonard Wood when they were arrested.

  1. Surely, you jest! This is Islamophobia at its worst.

"Harassment" is a legal term and implies more than one unwanted or unsolicited contact. In Georgia, harassment can get the offender a sentence of one year in the county jail to ten years in the state penitentiary. A single egregious contact is sufficient cause for incarceration.

These predators get to go home, how sweet, how typical.

  3. The Surrender to Iran Begins

January 21, 2014 by Joseph Klein

IRAN-NUCLEAR-POLITICS-ROWHANIThe mainstream Western media is lauding the implementation of the so-called “landmark” interim nuclear agreement Iran entered into with the P-5 +1 nations – the United States, United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany. Beginning when the agreement took effect on January 20th, the Associated Press reported, “Iran halted its most sensitive uranium enrichment work… easing concerns over the country’s nuclear program and clearing the way for a partial lifting of sanctions.”

An Iranian state TV broadcast proclaimed Iran’s suspension of enrichment of uranium to the 20 percent level at its Natanz facility: “Production of 20 percent enriched uranium has been halted by cutting the links feeding cascades in this facility.” The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which is being allowed to broaden its inspections under non-public procedures agreed to as part of the implementation of the interim agreement, confirmed that the centrifuges were disconnected. A similar enrichment suspension is to take place at Iran’s Fordo underground complex, also subject to IAEA verification.

Furthermore, Iran claims it is complying with its agreement to convert some of its existing stockpiles of 20 percent enriched uranium to oxide to produce nuclear fuel and to dilute the balance from 20 percent to 5 percent enrichment over a period of six months.

In return, Iran will receive some sanctions relief, estimated by Obama administration officials to be in the range of $7 billion. There will also be a halt to any new sanctions for the six month duration of the interim agreement, which is subject to a mutually agreed upon extension for an additional six months if the parties believe that they can reach a definitive agreement regarding Iran’s entire nuclear program within that timeframe.

It all sounds so good – indeed, “historic” to use another adjective bandied about by the mainstream press – until one scratches the surface. In reality, after stripping away all the hype, the interim agreement is full of loopholes big enough to drive both key portions of Iran’s nuclear program and its reviving economy through.

For example, the interim agreement leaves completely untouched Iran’s Parchin military research facility. The IAEA has raised concerns about clandestine nuclear weapon-related activities that may have gone on there, involving development and testing of a nuclear explosives device. Iran denies the claim, but at the same time has continued to refuse access to IAEA inspectors.

The interim agreement also preserves Iran’s alternative route to building a nuclear bomb – a heavy water production plant, which is designed to supply a heavy water reactor under construction nearby that could be used to produce plutonium for a nuclear bomb. Although IAEA inspectors have been permitted to visit the site in Arak, there does not appear to be anything in the interim agreement that would require Iran to stop the building of components for future installation in its heavy water facilities in Arak, much less dismantle what is already there. The only thing Iran has committed to do is to refrain from actually activating the heavy water reactor, which it is not ready to do anyway right now as construction of the reactor continues.

    1. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is a master of faux negotiations. He is playing the same game to stall for time that, as Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator in 2003, he used then to lull the Europeans into thinking Iran had agreed to a meaningful suspension of its nuclear activities. Instead, exploiting the illusion of suspension a decade ago, Iran’s government took significant steps in finalizing the heart of Iran’s nuclear program – uranium conversion, enrichment and installation of many more centrifuges. Rouhani bragged about his artifice years later during an interview on Iranian state television. In that interview, he asked a rhetorical question and then responded regarding how Iran’s enrichment technology capabilities significantly advanced during the supposed suspension: “We halted the nuclear program? We were the ones to complete it! We completed the technology.”

What Rouhani is now doing is right out of the same playbook. He is using the suspension of Iran’s uranium enrichment above 5 percent – a technology which Iran has long since fully mastered – as a cover behind which Iran completes the development of the technology necessary for successfully triggering a nuclear device. It is also moving ahead with the construction of all the components necessary for heavy water plant facilities useful for producing plutonium for a nuclear bomb.

Moreover, the Iranian regime can easily reverse course on uranium enrichment in a twinkling of an eye. Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Abbas Araghchi, boasted last week in a television interview that “We can return again to 20 percent enrichment in less than one day and we can convert the [nuclear] material again. I can say definitively that the structure of our nuclear program will be exactly preserved. Nothing will be put aside, dismantled or halted. Everything will continue, enrichment will continue.”

This is no bluff. Olli Heinonen, former deputy director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, confirmed in a recent radio interview that Iran can re-connect the centrifuge links to enable resumption of 20 percent enrichment “in one day’s time.” Even more ominously, he warned that Iran has the technical capability to put the requisite number of linked centrifuges into operation, after which “it would take about two, three weeks to have enough uranium hexafluoride high-enriched for one single weapon.” If Iran abides completely by the terms of the interim agreement for the full six months in regard to the conversion of its full stockpile of 20 percent enriched uranium, it could take three months, rather than two to three weeks, to get back on track to enrich enough uranium to build a bomb. Meanwhile, nothing is stopping Iran from continuing its work on its plutonium production facilities and nuclear triggering technology.

    2. While Iran will hardly miss a beat in its enrichment program if it decides it is in its interest to abandon the negotiations for a more permanent deal, the benefits of the sanctions relief it will have obtained in the interim will be irreversible. The Iranian economy will receive an immediate direct infusion as assets currently blocked overseas are released. Sanctions are being immediately lifted on key industrial and commodity sectors comprising petrochemical products, gold and other precious metals, the auto industry, and passenger plane parts and services. In addition, Russian and West European companies and government representatives are already making frequent trips to Iran in anticipation of renewing commercial ties as the entire fragile multinational sanctions regime begins to unravel. This in turn has helped stabilize Iran’s currency and sent its stock market soaring.

In short, the “historic,” “landmark” interim deal trumpeted by the Obama administration is in fact an historic giveaway to Iran full of landmines and loopholes. It is up to Congress to pass legislation with sufficient bipartisan majorities to override an expected Obama veto that would send a clear signal to Iran. Under such legislation, if Iran cheats on the interim deal or simply pockets the economic windfall from the sanctions relief it obtains under the interim deal and abandons good faith negotiations to reach a meaningful, verifiable permanent agreement that prevents it from getting anywhere close to a nuclear bomb breakout capability, it will face the immediate imposition of crippling new economic sanctions, added to what is already still in place. The sanctions would reduce Iran’s oil exports to a trickle and completely isolate Iran from the global financial system, with little latitude for President Obama to grant waivers. Anything less is surrender, the precise word that Iran’s President Rouhani himself used to describe the West’s cave-in to Iran’s demands in the interim agreement.

    Obama's Surrender to Iran
    By Shoula Romano Horing

It is a sad moment in history when the president of the dictatorial Iranian Islamic regime's characterization of the recently signed nuclear deal made last Sunday sounds more credible and believable than that of President Obama, the leader of the free world. While Obama hailed the deal on Sunday January 12, which implemented the nuclear agreement made between Iran and six world powers last November, as a great diplomatic breakthrough which "marks the first time in a decade" that Iran agreed to "halt progress in its nuclear program" and even "roll back" some it, President Rouhani described it as representing the" surrender" of the Western powers to Iran's demands.

A bill, proposed by fellow Democrat Bob Menendez and Republican Mark Kirk to threaten harder sanctions on Iran if no final agreement to dismantle the nuclear enrichment program is reached in the next six months, has the votes to pass in the U.S. Senate with 43 Republicans and 16 Democrats cosponsoring it. However, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, has blocked the legislation from coming to a vote at the White House's request. The White house is further threatening to veto the bill if passed. The bill needs 67 supporters to override a veto. While only two Republicans do not support the bill, many of the senators from the Democratic Party who have benefitted greatly from U.S. Jewish votes and donations are against it including many Jewish senators.

Ten committee chairmen in the Democratic-led Senate have pushed back against the new legislation. Sadly, but predictably, among committee chairs opposed to advancing the bill now are four leading Jewish senators who supposedly claim to be pro-Israel. They are: Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), the Chairwoman of the Intelligence Committee; Carl Levin (D-Mich.), the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee; Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), the Chairwoman of the Environment Committee; and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), the Chairman of the Energy Committee.
It seems that Jewish Democrats will choose President Obama's agenda every time over Israel's survival, and are even willing in the process to throw Israel under the bus and amplify anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic stereotypes.
On Tuesday, January 14, California Senator Dianne Feinstein's suggested in a speech she delivered on the Senate floor that the bipartisan Menendez-Kirk bill would "let Israel determine when and where the United States goes to war."

While AIPAC and the American Jewish Committee are fully and actively supporting the bill, Rabbi Jack Moline, the National Jewish Democratic Committee's executive director, was willing to be used as an attack dog by the White House to smear his fellow Jews, accusing AIPAC and the American Jewish Committee of "strong-arm tactics, essentially threatening people that if they don't vote a particular way, that somehow that makes them anti-Israel or means the abandonment of the Jewish community."

Luckily, New York Democratic Senator Schumer has chosen this time to defy Obama and supports the bill. As the third ranking Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer should try to convince Senator Reid to allow the vote and also convince his fellow Jews and other Democrats to override a presidential veto.

In lobbying against the legislation, the White House in recent days warned that any further sanctions would "anger" and "break-faith" with Iran, and blow up the talks and undermine the so called moderate Iranian leaders and lead us to war.

    ReplyDelete

    1. But in reality the so called moderate Iranian leader whose victory in the summer elections was argued by the administration as a -sign that Iran was changing for the better, did not have a problem with "breaking faith" with the U.S. Two days after the final agreement was signed President Hassan Rouhani asked a crowd in Iran "Do you know what the Geneva Agreement means? It means the surrender of the big powers before the great Iranian nation." He further stated that "The Geneva Agreement means the wall of sanctions has broken."

Moreover, Rouhani's foreign minister, Mohamad Javid Zarif, another supposed "moderate," who negotiated with Kerry in Geneva, laid a wreath last Monday, at the grave of the Hezbollah terrorist who planned the terrorist attack on the U.S. Marines barracks in Beirut in 1983 which killed 241 American troops.

For the last two months, between the initial November agreement and the second deal regarding its implementation, the Iranians have been very busy growing their nuclear program and getting it close to breakout capacity. It has reportedly introduced a new generation of centrifuges to its facilities in Natanz and Fordow, and is vigorously building its Arak heavy water facility. In addition, it has added 1000 pounds to its stockpile of uranium enriched to 5 percent and 66 pounds to its 20 percent stock, and the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors were turned away when they tried to inspect a military base where the Iranians are suspected of experimenting with ways to weaponize their stockpile.

It seems the Iranians do not fear Obama. Recent Iranian actions and words underscore Iran's confidence that no matter what they will do and say Obama will not confront them militarily and will work hard to protect them against additional sanctions . They believe that the Geneva Agreement ended their economic isolation and that the process is irreversible. It was reported that Russia and Turkey are in the process of signing deals, worth billions, with Iran selling its oil for goods.

The only way now to pressure Iran, the regional bully, to agree in the upcoming final negotiations to dismantle their nuclear program is if the Iranians fear that the Congress is determined to override Obama's veto and shut down their economy again with much worse crippling sanctions. The only chance for a diplomatic solution to the Iranian nuclear threat is to support and pass the Menendez-Kirk sanctions bill.

  7. Iraq warns militants possess major firepower

At the close of business Friday, it was reported that about 400 hardcore fighters were in Fallujah. Now, we learn that the city is armed with enough equipment to take Baghdad. Presumably, with the equipment came troops. Something is wrong with this picture.

How did all this alleged heavy-bore equipment make its way into Fallujah undetected in route? Tanks are hauled to the line by truck because it is faster, cheaper, and safer for the tank. The same is true of self-propelled artillery and artillery generally. Large quantities of ammunition and other supplies are also shipped in via roadways. Certainly, troops were mobile. Who supplied all this material? Why was no effort made to halt delivery?

When last I checked, Iraq has American supplied fighters, about 150 American main battle tanks, attack helicopters, etc. Yet, obviously, they sat idle.

Ash. I have provided you with statistics in the past yet you ignore them. While all one can do is condemn the practice of pedophilia, the ‘statistics’ that are available in no way point to being a Catholic as responsible. Catholic priests, as shown by the statistics, have no more predisposition towards pedophilia than the general public or for that matter no more than officials from other religions. In fact, their percentages in the US are at least 3 times less than those within our vast education industry. Methinks, you are not really that concerned about statistics. Pedophilia comes not because of the teachings of a particular religion but by the predilections of sick people who are in positions of power over children.

With regard to logic, I can agree that the implications Ms. T offers are a bit specious. While there is no doubt we in the West abhor and condemn the practice of taking prepubescent girls as brides as is practiced in a lot of the ME, the case cited by Ms. T is something different.

What was described was a crime, a crime we see every day on our streets, a crime whose perpetrators come from all walks of life and all religions or no religions. Thinking it is all right to ‘marry’ a young girl certainly does not give anyone the right to lure them into a car with evil intent.

Poorly written. Obviously, if it was a priest involved it was a Catholic responsible. The point I tried to make was that there is no evidence that being a Catholic contributed to the base pedophilia but rather that the priest took advantage of his position of power over children to act out his predilections much as a boy scout leader or a school teacher might likewise use their positions for the same end.

Many here get upset if the position is advanced that pedophilia is a regular occurrence in the Catholic community as evidenced by the Priest problem but they like to trumpet how Islam has a problem as evidenced by, for example, 2 Jordanian soldiers or 5 assault rapes committed in Norway in 2010.

Once again, you fail the English test, Ash.

      but

You use the word as a preposition meaning 'used to introduce something contrasting with what has already been mentioned'; however, in the sentence structure you used, one can only assume you are talking about someone who does both of the two contrasting things.

Is there a larger proportion of Catholic priests that are pedophiles than the general population? yes, I think so. given what I've seen in the media, but I don't have the numbers to compare or support the position.

Given what you have seen in the media? Genius.

You don't have the statistics to prove it? Then look them up you dumb shit instead of continuing to spread your bullshit. There are not many studies out there. Unions, municipalities, and other organizations don't really like to talk about their dirty little secrets. The Catholic Church is one of the few that has, forced to by the constant barrage in the 'media'. However, there are also a couple of major studies out there done by independent scholars, one that is often cited in government studies and news stories came out in the early 2000's, maybe 2003. Also, check on how the incidence in the Church compares that to those involved in education. It should be personally interesting to you.

I don't want to go through this again but if you want to offer some evidence I will be glad to go back once again and dig up mine. If you are too lazy to do the research then spare me the bullshit.

    13. dude, here are some new numbers not covered in your studies back in '03:

"Pope defrocked 400 priests for molesting children, document shows

Pope Benedict XVI defrocked nearly 400 priests over just two years for sexually molesting children, a document obtained by The Associated Press on Friday shows.

The statistics for 2011 and 2012 show a dramatic increase over the 171 priests removed in 2008 and 2009, when the Vatican first provided details on the number of priests who have been defrocked. Before that, it had only publicly revealed the number of alleged cases of sexual abuse it had received and the number of trials it had authorized."

      http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/world/pope-defrocked-400-priests-for-molesting-children-document-shows/article16388417/#dashboard/follows/

a quick google came up with about 400,000 Catholic priests in the world and here we have 400 of them defrocked for molestation over a 2 year period. That is an incidence of 1 in 1000 priests based on those numbers. Obviously the numbers of defrocked over a 2 year period doesn't give us a firm idea of the incidence of molestation of the priest population as a whole but it does suggest, to me anyway, that it would be higher than what we are seeing in the general population.

Of course, they can be used interchangeably, Ash, and that is exactly what you have done; however, that gets us back to the word many. While there many be many here that knock everything about Islam, as far as I know, I am the only one that has called you on the issue of your portrayal of Catholic priests.

Obviously the numbers of defrocked over a 2 year period doesn't give us a firm idea of the incidence of molestation of the priest population as a whole but it does suggest, to me anyway, that it would be higher than what we are seeing in the general population.

But you would be wrong. I have no way of knowing but my perception is that you are merely open the what supports you belief on this matter so everything does. The statistic offered does give specifics about enforcement in a two year period by the Vatican. However, it tells little else about the occurrence or percentage of child abusing priests. The 400 is over a two year period but it tells nothing about the number of incidents each priest was either accused of, found guilty of, or when the abuses occurred. You also throw out a number of one in a thousand priest; but that is only 0.1% a figure that is likely too low given previous estimate of the number being around 4%. (Although a German study conducted after accusations of cover-up by Benedict did come up with that exact number and new studies indicate the incidence of abuse has dropped off quite a bit since the initial story hit the headlines in 2002.) Looking at it in the other direction, in 2002, the cases reported by the Boston Globe and those reported after that covered a decades long period of abuse with most occurring in the 60's and 70's. At the time of those reports and until recently the only thing reported was the number of accusations not the number of priests involved and in multiple cases particular priests were responsible for many incidents.

The statistics for 2011 and 2012 show a dramatic increase over the 171 priests removed in 2008 and 2009, when the Vatican first provided details on the number of priests who have been defrocked.

The inference would be that cases of child abuse among Catholic Priests is going up but in fact studies show they are going down.

Rather than going by your impressions, I would suggest you look at actual studies on the subject.

I am sorry I have been unable to find that particular study I wanted which involved findings of a particular educator that laid out the numbers in a nice summary so instead I offer the following links to kind of round out the picture.

First is an article by the Denver Post that responds to the issues you have raised.

      http://blogs.denverpost.com/hark/2010/05/25/scandal-creates-contempt-for-catholic-clergy/39/

The following is a famous study by a noted educational researcher that talks about sex abuse among educators.

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charol_Shakeshaft

      From the Wiki article,

According to a 2006 National Review Online opinion column republished by CBS News, Shakeshaft said that "... the physical sexual abuse of students in [public] schools is likely more than 100 times the abuse by [Catholic] priests."[4] She estimated that about 290,000 students were victimized between 1991 and 2000.[5]

      ------------------------

A 2007 Washington Post report noted, "It's a dynamic so common it has its own nicknames: 'passing the trash' or the 'mobile molester.'" In addition, "Maine...has a law that keeps offending teachers' cases secret" and that "in Hawaii, no educators were disciplined by the state in the five years the AP examined, even though some teachers there were serving sentences for various sex crimes during that time. They technically remained teachers, even behind bars."[8] The report also said, "Laws in several states require that even an allegation of sexual misconduct be reported to the state departments that oversee teacher licenses. But there's no consistent enforcement, so such laws are easy to ignore. School officials fear public embarrassment as much as the perpetrators do, Shakeshaft says. They want to avoid the fallout from going up against a popular teacher. They also don't want to get sued by teachers or victims, and they don't want to face a challenge from a strong union."

      General statistics from Wiki:

The global prevalence of child sexual abuse has been estimated at 19.7% for females and 7.9% for males, according to a 2009 study published in Clinical Psychology Review that examined 65 studies from 22 countries. Using the available data, the highest prevalence rate of child sexual abuse geographically was found in Africa (34.4%), primarily because of high rates in South Africa; Europe showed the lowest prevalence rate (9.2%); America and Asia had prevalence rates between 10.1% and 23.9%.[13] In the past, other research has concluded similarly that in North America, for example, approximately 15% to 25% of women and 5% to 15% of men were sexually abused when they were children.[14][15][16] Most sexual abuse offenders are acquainted with their victims; approximately 30% are relatives of the child, most often brothers, fathers, uncles or cousins; around 60% are other acquaintances such as 'friends' of the family, babysitters, or neighbors; strangers are the offenders in approximately 10% of child sexual abuse cases.[14] Most child sexual abuse is committed by men; studies show that women commit 14% to 40% of offenses reported against boys and 6% of offenses reported against girls.[14][15][17] Some sources report that most offenders who sexually abuse prepubescent children are pedophiles,[18] but some offenders who have sexually abused prepubescent children do not meet the clinical diagnosis standards for pedophilia.[19][20]

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Child_sexual_abuse

A study that indicate the difficulty of getting statistics that measure on an apples to apples basis. Note that the study is just for family members and does not include outside members of the general population such as clergy, groups like the Boy Scouts, educators, child care workers, etc. One of the problems is that it is estimated that only one in 10 of these cases get reported.

  15. Obamacare Has a New Problem: It Won’t Fix Emergency Rooms

No, Obamacare Won’t Reduce Emergency Room Usage

But the best evidence has never really supported the hope that the law would reduce emergency room usage. That’s because much of the law’s expanded coverage comes via Medicaid, the jointly run federal-state program for the low income and disabled. And Medicaid beneficiaries tend to visit the emergency room more often than the uninsured.

A new study of Medicaid beneficiaries in Oregon makes a strong version of this case. The study, published today in the journal Science, finds that adult Medicaid beneficiaries rely on emergency rooms about 40 percent more than similar uninsured adults.

The study, published in the journal Science and released on Thursday, shows that the nearly 4 million new patients subsidized by government under the expansion of Medicaid are more likely to end up seeking treatment in emergency rooms for non-emergency health problems than before they entered the program.

Harvard conducted the study in Oregon in 2008 after that state expanded its Medicaid program. It found that newly-insured Medicaid patients went to the ER 40 percent more than the uninsured.

The findings are the polar opposite of government calculations that these millions of new patients would pick lower-cost options for their healthcare, by going to their primary care physicians.

Public heavily backing Broncos at sportsbooks
    20 January 2014

    By Matt Youmans

    from CasinoCity.com

After briefly being cast in the underdog role, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos are Super Bowl favorites.

At most Las Vegas sports books, the Broncos are 1-point favorites over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII on Feb. 2. The total opened 48. The Seahawks opened as slight favorites, but the line shifted after bettors showed strong support for the Broncos.

“The public sentiment is going to be with Denver,” South Point Hotel Casino and Spa oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro said. “It looks like an attack on Denver. It’s just Manning. I think that’s the rationale behind the Broncos money.”

Manning passed for 400 yards and two touchdowns to lead Denver, a 5-point favorite, to a 26-16 victory over New England in the AFC championship on Sunday.

Denver was favored in all 16 regular-season games and two playoff games. The Broncos closed as 1-point road favorites in a loss to the Patriots on Nov. 24.

The Seahawks closed as 3½-point favorites in their 23-17 comeback victory over San Francisco in the NFC title game.

“It’s going to be a contrast of styles, and that’s going to make it a very interesting matchup,” said LVH - Las Vegas Hotel and Casino sports book director Jay Kornegay, who opened Seattle as a 2-point favorite over Denver.

The LVH adjusted its opening line and moved to Broncos minus-1, and a few books posted minus-2.

The game has a shot to top last year’s Super Bowl-record wagering handle of $98.9 million at Nevada’s books.

“I think it could go over $100 million, just based on the great handle we’ve had all season,” MGM Resorts sports book director Jay Rood said.

Vatican Banker Hit With New Money Laundering Charge
      Dario Thuburn

Rome (AFP) - A former Vatican accountant already under house arrest and on trial for alleged corruption and attempted money laundering has been notified of fresh charges against him, Italy's financial police said on Tuesday

The police said in a statement that they had seized Monsignor Nunzio Scarano's luxury 17-room apartment and blocked nearly 9.0 million euros ($12 million) on current accounts linked to the senior Italian cleric.

The Vatican in July last year said it had already frozen assets belonging to Scarano and the police on Tuesday said these funds amounted to 2.2 million euros.

"This is very significant," the police said in a statement, a reference to unprecedented levels of cooperation between Vatican and Italian judicial authorities on a high-profile financial crime case.

Vatican bank spokesman Max Hohenberg told AFP: "All activity on his accounts over the past 10 years has been extracted, analysed and submitted to authorities.

"This investigation is based on information provided by the Vatican," he said.

The police said a priest in Scarano's hometown of Salerno who was an aide to the monsignor, Father Luigi Noli, has also been charged and put under house arrest.

A total of 52 people are being investigated in the case, including a notary who allegedly helped organise the money laundering scheme and lawyers, doctors and businesspeople who are suspected of making use of it.

Scarano is accused of taking cheques marked "Donation for the Poor" and in return giving cash from accounts at the Vatican bank, officially known as the Institute of Religious Works or IOR under its Italian acronym.

The police said they had seized two bank accounts at a branch near the Vatican of Italy's UniCredit, one in Scarano's name and the other belonging to a company in which the prelate held 99 percent of shares.

One of the cash withdrawals made by Scarano and traced by police was for 588,248 euros and the police said he gave it to 50 people and used it to pay back a mortgage.

They said they managed to find at least five million euros that Scarano "had at his disposal" and alleged he made extensive property investments in Salerno.

The prelate's lawyer, Silverio Sica, said his client used the money for charity and could not be responsible for the provenance of donations he received.

      Delete
    3. "These are donations we received over the years from wealthy people. They are free donations. It is not up to us to say where the money came from," he told AFP.

Silverio Sica said the latest accusations had been a "blow" for Scarano and that he had requested that a psychiatrist be allowed to visit him, adding: "He is completely in shock, he is very disoriented."

The police said their suspicions were first aroused in January 2013 when Scarano reported a theft from his home of "several million euros' worth of valuables".

They said the sum was "significantly disproportionate" to Scarano's declared income.

Scarano was arrested in June of last year on suspicion of being an intermediary for suspect payments from Monaco to Italy, carried out through the Vatican bank.

The clergyman has since been suspended from his duties as chief accountant for APSA, the organisation that manages the Vatican's vast real estate portfolio.

Investigators said Scarano used IOR accounts to make transfers to friends and attempted to repatriate from Switzerland 20 million euros that were untaxed, on behalf of a family of ship owners from Naples.

Scarano's trial started in December last year.

The Vatican, the world's smallest sovereign state, has launched a series of reforms aimed at bringing its bank into line with international standards against money laundering.

The bank has been plagued by scandals in the past and its former president, Paul Marcinkus, sheltered in the Vatican for years to fight off repeated attempts by Italian judicial authorities to arrest him in the 1980s.

    phobia
1786, "fear, horror, aversion," Mod.L., abstracted from compounds in -phobia, from Gk. -phobia, from phobos "fear," originally "flight" (still the only sense in Homer), but it became the common word for "fear" via the notion of "panic, fright" (cf. phobein "put to flight, frighten"), from PIE base *bhegw-
"to run" (cf. Lith. begu "to flee," O.C.S. begu "flight," bezati "to flee, run," O.N. bekkr "a stream"). Psychological sense attested by 1895; phobic (adj.) is from 1897.

    16. Personally, I find the fundamentalists of all religions to be ....ummm, the problem ones.

You've read the Quran have you?

      I don't disagree with you.

My take away from the New Testament is this,
Truth is God, and G_D is Truth.

Should I deviate from this fundamental principle?

You've read the Quran have you?

      I've "Hacked" the Quran.
Hacked it and was shown just some of the most vile passages in it.

      And you?

    18. Your question should be, "What can possibly evoke such visceral reaction from someone that was raised in the peaceful religion of Christianity"

What could make me curse G_D?

    19. Oops.
Forgot the question mark up there.
      "...religion of Christianity?"

      There it is.

Maybe I crossed the line a bit.

  27. In many ways 2013 was a terrible year for libertarians and limited government.

    ...

But here are three reasons why 2014 might well be the most libertarian year ever!

    1. Obamacare Agonistes

Last fall’s rollout of Obamacare – complete with non-functioning website and irrefutable evidence that the president lied about your ability to keep your plan if you liked it – has helped wake people up to the inefficiency and dissembling nature of government. That will only get worse as the program actually starts providing healthcare.

    2. F@$# the Government

Between Obamacare, ongoing and continuing NSA revelations, and so much more, mistrust of government is near record levels. And a record-high percentage – 72 percent! - agrees that government represents “the biggest threat to the country in the future.”

    3. Midterms Bloody Midterms

Congressional approval ratings are at or near historic lows, with some polls showing approvals ratings as low as 7 percent! Barack Obama’s ratings are better but still terrible for any second-term president not named Nixon.
