COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

  3. 95% of Violent Conflicts Around The World are Muslim.

Of The 22 World Conflicts Around The World, 21 are Muslim..

This may sound like propaganda because it sounds so far fetched. It isn’t. Check your own world almanac….

Radical Islam has spread a scourge of violence around the globe that otherwise simply wouldn’t exist. It is time for the West to put an end to this horror. The first step is to destroy Iran as the world leader of Islamic violence.

As long as Iran threatens the world with nuclear Islamic fundamentalism there is simply no way to quash the continuing outbreak of Islamic violence worldwide. The Western democracies should crush the atavistic and xenophobic leader of this retreat from civilization.

If Iran is convincingly neutralized, it’s possible that the rest of the radical Islamic movements will realize that the way to accomplish their aspirations is through peaceful coexistence. Otherwise the monomaniacal dream of global Islamic domination will continue to destabilize the world until an apocalyptic result ensues.

The latest catastrophic, meaningless Islamic bloodletting is occurring in Kyrgyzstan. The Russians want no part of it and won’t intervene.

Who can blame them? I’m reminded of the old Texas aphorism, “You can’t mess with shit without gettin’ it on you.“ The Russians have learned that the hard way from both Afghanistan and Bosnia.

How long will we continue to allow these murderous bullies to set back the momentumof world progress.

    ENOUGH!!!

"Clearly the American electorate is growing weary of a president who is very good at hiding behind his intentions, while demonizing the intentions of his opponents, only to show little if any improvements in the daily lives of those he claims to be fighting for," said pollsters Ed Goeas and Brian Neinaber.

      Israel's Most Reliable Ally
      By C. Hart

"Through fire and water, Canada will stand with you," were the closing remarks of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper at the Israeli Knesset on Monday, January 20, 2014. This was the first time a Canadian Prime Minister addressed the Knesset; and, it was Harper's first trip to Israel and the Middle East. His messages throughout his stay were received warmly by the Israeli government and public. There was no outspoken criticism of Israel -- another "first" by a head of state visiting the land.

Harper's friendship with Israel has been a welcome relief at a time when the Jewish State has become increasingly isolated. Israel's diplomatic troubles have come to the forefront, recently:

      • Israeli ambassadors were called on the carpet by four European governments that demanded an explanation of current Israeli settlement policy;

      • UNESCO cancelled an exhibit portraying 3,500 years of Jewish history in the Holy Land because of Arab protests;

      • Western divestments and boycotts of Israeli products beyond the Green Line continue to hamper Israel's ability to engage in free trade;

      • Anti-Semitic slurs by Western government leaders and public acts against Jews have become more frequent;

      • Questionable foreign policy initiatives by the United States has caused Israeli leaders to mistrust America's intentions. Some Israeli politicians are building a case against U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's framework peace plan before its expected release.

While Israel has looked for sustainable partnerships, Harper has been the most consistent leader to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. He's not afraid to say what he thinks. He has given courageous public statements on behalf of Israel. He's understood Israel's demand to be recognized as the sovereign state of the Jewish People.

In his Knesset speech, Harper asserted, "It is right to support Israel, because after generations of persecution, the Jewish People deserve their own homeland and deserve to live safely and peacefully in that homeland."

      Delete
    3. Harper sees Israel as a light of freedom and democracy in a dark region. "Canada supports Israel fundamentally because it is right to do so... Support today for the Jewish State of Israel is more than a moral imperative. It is also a matter of strategic importance; also a matter of our own, long-term interests."

According to Harper, Canadians stand for what they believe is the right thing to do. Otherwise, as he pointed out, "the retreat of our values and our interests in the world will begin."

Harper explained that in the West, old hatred of Jews has been translated into sophisticated language in society. People don't say they hate the Jews or blame them openly. But, they do declare their hatred of Israel and they blame the Jewish State.

Harper expanded on this definition of the new anti-Semitism. "It targets the Jewish People by targeting Israel and attempts to make the old bigotry acceptable to a new generation." Harper said this is done by selectively condemning Israel and denying its right to exist.

Meanwhile, Canada has continued to demonstrate its defense of Israel in diplomatic forums. Harper withdrew his diplomats when the Durban II conference in 2009 deteriorated into Israel-bashing. He also stood for Israel at the UN: "What else can we call it when Israel is routinely singled out, targeted at the United Nations; and, when Israel remains the only country to be the subject of a permanent agenda item at the regular sessions of its Human Rights Council?"

      Delete
    4. During Harper's visit, his warm ties with Netanyahu were exhibited. The pomp and circumstance at the Israeli Prime Minister's office, welcoming Harper and his wife Laureen to Jerusalem, was as celebratory as the airport welcome for U.S. President Barack Obama in March 2013. A large delegation of 250 people accompanied Harper, including members of Canada's Jewish community, parliamentary and government officials, and business leaders.

At the Knesset, Harper confirmed, "This friendship between us is rooted in history, nourished by shared values, and it is intentionally reinforced at the highest levels of commerce and government as an outward expression of strongly held inner convictions."

In the future, Harper not only wants to expand economic ties with Israel, but military ties as well. He referred to Israel's help in defending his country: "During Canada's mission to Afghanistan, the use of Israeli-built reconnaissance equipment saved the lives of many Canadian soldiers."

Harper has maintained Israel's right to defend itself by supporting IDF incursions into Lebanon in 2006, and into Gaza several times. He understands Israel's need to establish and maintain a level of deterrence that keeps its enemies at bay.

Harper was the first Western leader to cut aid to the Palestinians in Gaza when Hamas took over in 2006. He has financially supported the Palestinians in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), announcing a new pledge of $66 million when meeting with President Mahmoud Abbas on this trip.

While he supports the Palestinian quest for an independent state, Harper thinks this should be done through peaceful relations with Israel and direct negotiations. In 2012, he stood with Israel against the Palestinian bid for non-member status at the UN General Assembly. The Palestinians are expected to continue their goal for international recognition if current peace talks fail.

Harper spelled out his foreign policy, stating the three ways Canada would continue to stand by Israel:

"First, Canada finds it deplorable that some in the international community still question the legitimacy of the existence of the State of Israel. Our view that Israel's right to exist as a Jewish state is absolute and non-negotiable."

"Second, Canada believes that Israel should be able to exercise its full rights as a UN member-state and to enjoy the full measure of its sovereignty. For this reason, Canada has spoken on numerous occasions in support of Israel's engagement and equal treatment in multilateral fora. And in this regard, I should mention that we welcome Israel's induction this month into the western, democratic group of states at the United Nations."

"Third, we refuse to single out Israel for criticism on the international stage."

Harper said condemnation of Israel is not balanced or sophisticated. "It is just, quite simply, weak and wrong."

Displaying compassion for the 65 years Israel has struggled through wars, bombings, and slander, Harper acknowledged that Israelis have never known a day of true peace. "We Canadians understand that Israelis live with this impossible calculus: If you act to defend yourselves, you will suffer widespread condemnation over and over again. But should you fail to act, you alone will suffer the consequence of your inaction and that consequence will be final. It will be your destruction."

In that warning to Israel, it's obvious that Harper gets it. In the standing ovations he received from his delegation at the Israeli Knesset, it's obvious that Canada gets it. Harper surpasses other leaders of the Free World because of his faith and convictions; identifying with the suffering of the Jewish People. It should be great encouragement to Israelis, knowing they do not have to stand alone, as long as Canada continues to be their closest and most reliable diplomatic ally

  17. Fighting For a Failed War

But perhaps the most troubling issue addressed in the February 2012 AFJ article was a rhetorical question posed: “How many more men must die for a mission that is not succeeding?” Now we know the answer: according to official DoD figures, (PDF) as of this writing (22 January) 4,584 American men and women have been killed and wounded since the article was published (391 having lost their lives). In addition, according to United Nations figures, 9,458 Afghan civilians have been killed or wounded (2,754 killed) over the same timeframe; the bodies and limbs of over 14,000 human beings who were alive and whole when that article was published have been spent to perpetuate the façade of success.

We have asked tens of thousands of American men and women to sacrifice their lives and bodies to the war in Afghanistan, ostensibly in defense of American national security. Over the last number of years our most senior leaders have resolutely refused to admit what the evidence plainly confirms: our strategies and policies have failed. We must stop sacrificing the lives and limbs of America’s Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, and Marines to support “messaging” at the expense of the truth.

  18. 04 December 2013

I am in Turkey to study the Syrian civil war. Yet this is also a crucial moment in Thailand. A few words on the Kingdom are due.

December 5 is His Majesty's birthday. As an American, I was raised since birth to reject all kings. That is our upbringing and what we are taught in school, and with good reason.

The King of Thailand is a rare exception.

King Bhumibol and his wife have earned tremendous respect from other world leaders. Thai do not call him “the King,” but “my King,” just as we would say “my grandfather.” King Bhumibol is the deeply loved grandfather of modern Thailand.

The Royal family has invested great effort into women's education, conservation, and bringing peace, where possible, between people who in other countries would be at war. Personally, I like that the King can be seen in many photographs carrying a camera, but not a rifle.

The King had a crucial hand in replacing the scourge of opium with coffee plants, other crops, and commercial flowers. This is why I often buy street flowers in Thailand.

Barry McCaffrey is a retired US Army four-star General. General McCaffrey is also a former US “drug czar.” I went to his office to ask about Mexico issues, and what we could do about opium in Afghanistan. General McCaffrey told me the King of Thailand was crucial for replacing opium in Thailand, and without the King, it likely never would have been accomplished.

The King was the only person with the credibility to make the change. As General McCaffrey explained, there is no such person in Afghanistan, or Mexico or anywhere on earth, who can say, “We are Thai, and Thai do not grow opium. We will help you grow something else.” And for holdouts, there was of course the Army and police, but most of the magic was in the King himself.

Back in Thailand, I met with a close friend of the King who arranged for me a private tour of the Royal Projects Foundation. This tour and further study revealed that much of that opium was replaced with commercial flowers. This is why my friends see me buy flowers in Thailand. I buy flowers because I know it is feeding a farmer who otherwise might grow opium.

And so my visiting friends sometimes ask, “Why do you buy flowers from a street peddler?” I say, listen, and I will explain. Some will say, then buy the flowers at a shop, and I say the street peddler has better prices and needs to eat, too. If I did not buy the flowers, the farmer would grow opium and the peddler would sell it. If I buy enough flowers, another kid might go to university. Consider me the last stop on the Royal Project.

I also buy local Thai coffee, and am partial to the Akha brand, which is raised by Akha hill tribe folks who previously grew opium. I have visited their farms. The people still live rough but there is improvement and many schools. Akha people do not even drink coffee, but with help of the Thai government and the Royal Project Foundation, today many hill tribe folks are coffee farmers.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. .

Besides not buying the flowers might end up costing you 15 years in prison under Thailand's lese majeste laws (who knows it's a foreign culture).

The King shall be enthroned in a position of revered worship and shall not be violated. No person shall expose the King to any sort of accusation or action.
      - Thai Constitution, Section 8

      Unintentional Gaffes

Given the historical and emotional baggage, you are well advised to keep any negative opinions of the King to yourself when you're in Thailand. Granted, few visitors are likely to cause offense on purpose, although some Thais might be offended by unintentional gaffes like stopping a rolling coin (with the King’s face on it) with your foot (touching a person’s body with one’s foot is grossly rude in Thailand).

Images of the King are meant to be treated with almost as much reverence as the King himself, so using a rolled-up portrait of the King to squash a cockroach is an egregious social error. Granted, it’s not serious enough to get the police on your case, but it will cause great offense to any Thai who witnesses it. Fortunately, Thais are rather forgiving, so honest mistakes quickly apologized for are just as quickly forgotten.

Maliki again urged the people of Falluja to "to take crucial positions on the presence of those dirty people without losses and without sacrifices," but set no precise time limit.

"Those criminals are seeking to ignite sectarian strife and to end up with the division of Iraq," Maliki said.

Mr. Maliki does not understand that his government's job is to take care of the security of its citizens. If his military cannot protect Iraq, it has no business being.

ISIL militants have brought more fighters and weapons into Falluja in the last three weeks, and other armed groups have proliferated in the security vacuum. Residents said they could not tell the allegiance of the roaming gunmen.

Hmm...Falluja and its approaches is a target rich environment. Why, then, are fighters allowed to come and go at will?

  26. The heritage of English law, common law, and proper procedure are coming to rural India, but damned too damned slowly -

    ******
KOLKATA, Jan 23 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A 20-year-old woman in eastern India was gang-raped by 13 men on the orders of a village court as punishment for having a relationship with a man from a different community, a senior police officer said on Thursday.

The woman, who is now recovering in hospital, told police she was assaulted by the men on the night of January 20 in Birbhum district in West Bengal.

Police said that her male companion was tied up in the village square, while the assault on the woman happened in a mud house.

"We arrested all the 13 men, including the village chief who ordered the gang rape. The accused have been produced in court which remanded them to jail custody," Birbhum's Superintendent of Police, C. Sudhakar, told the Thomson Reuters Foundation.

India toughened laws on sex crimes in March last year following the fatal gang rape of a physiotherapist on a moving bus in Delhi in December 2012. The case led to nationwide protests for better security and has helped sparked national debate about gender inequalities in India.

The issue was highlighted in local media again last week after a 51-year-old Danish tourist was gang-raped in central Delhi by at least five men whom she had asked for directions.

The West Bengal victim's family told media that she was assaulted because the court believed she had violated the rules of her tribe by falling in love with a man from another community.

The couple were ordered to pay a fine of 25,000 rupees ($400), said the victim's mother, adding that the village head then ordered the rape of her daughter.

Human rights groups say diktats issued by kangaroo courts are not uncommon in rural regions.

In northern parts of India, illegal village councils known as "Khap Panchayats" act as de-facto courts settling rural disputes on everything from land and cattle to matrimony and murder.

But such councils are coming under growing scrutiny as their punitive edicts grow more regressive - ranging from banning women from wearing western clothing and using mobile phones to supporting child marriage and sanctioning the lynching of young couples in so-called "honour killings".

The assault comes after a spate of high profile rapes in West Bengal which have brought Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee under fire for not doing enough to stop violence against women.

West Bengal recorded the highest number of gender crimes in the country at 30,942 in 2012 - 12.7 percent of India's total recorded crimes against women. These crimes include rape, kidnapping and sexual harassment and molestation.

Earlier this month, West Bengal's capital, Kolkata, witnessed public protests against police who have been accused of failing to act on the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl who was later murdered.

  28. Wendy !! wends her way upward -

    The heroism of Wendy Davis

    By: Ann Coulter
    1/23/2014

Wendy Davis, the Texas state senator running for governor, became a liberal superhero last June when she filibustered a bill to prohibit abortions after 20 weeks. (This was the good filibuster, not that awful filibuster three months later by Ted Cruz – that was just grandstanding.)

Apart from her enthusiasm for abortion (and you have to admit, abortion is really cool), the centerpiece of Davis’ campaign is her life story. Also the fact that she’s a progressive woman who doesn’t look like Betty Friedan.

In a typical formulation, Time magazine said Davis was someone who could give the Democrats “‘real people’ credibility,” based on “her own personal story — an absent father, a sixth-grade-educated mother, a teen pregnancy, followed by life as a single mom in a mobile home, then community college and, at last, Harvard Law School.”

The headlines capture the essence of Wendy-mania:

CNN: Wendy Davis: From Teen Mom to Harvard Law to Famous Filibuster

Bloomberg: Texas Filibuster Star Rose From Teen Mom to Harvard Law

The Independent (UK): Wendy Davis: Single Mother From Trailer Park Who Has Become Heroine of Pro-Choice Movement

Cosmopolitan: Find a Sugar Daddy to Put You Through Law School!

Actually, that last one I made up, but as we now know, it’s more accurate than Davis’ rags-to-riches life story.

The truth was gently revealed in the Dallas Morning News this week. Far from an attack, this was a puff-piece written by Wayne Slater, rabid partisan Democratic hack and co-author of the book, “Bush’s Brain.” (He is not an admirer of Bush’s brain.) It would be like Sean Hannity breaking a scandal about Ted Cruz.

The first hint that Slater was trying to help Davis get ahead of the story and tilt it her way is his comment that Davis’ life story is “more complicated” than her version — i.e., completely the opposite — adding, “as often happens when public figures aim to define themselves.”

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Actually, the truth is much simpler than her story. Also, be sure to look for that “as often happens” excuse the next time a Republican gets caught lying about his resume.

Slater’s peculiar obsession with whether Davis was 19 or 21 when she got her first divorce, and exactly how long she lived in a trailer home, is meant to deflect attention from something much more problematic: the huge whoppers Davis told.

Her big lies were about the obstacles she had to overcome and how she overcame them, not about how old she was at the time of her first divorce.

She claims she was raised by a single mother, went to work at age 14 to support her family, became a single mother herself in her teens, and then — by sheer pluck and determination — pulled herself out of the trailer park to graduate from Harvard Law School!

The truth is less coal-miner’s daughter than gold-digger who found a sugar daddy to raise her kids and pay for her education.

Point No. 1: Davis’ family wasn’t working-class. Her father owned a sandwich shop and a dinner theater, which puts Davis solidly into middle-class land.

Point No. 2: No one who works at MSNBC would know this, but everyone whose parents run a family business starts work at age 14, if not sooner.

Point No. 3: Her parents were separated, but that is not the commonly accepted meaning of “single mother.”

Point No. 4: As for being a single mother at age 19 — she wasn’t a “single mother” in the traditional sense, either. She was married at age 18, had a child at 19 and divorced her first husband, a construction worker, at 21. (He couldn’t afford tuition at Harvard.)

So she got married young? That isn’t a hard-luck story. Well into the 1950s, nearly half of all first-born children were born to married women under the age of 20.

      Delete
    2. But Wendy Davis’ harrowing nightmare of poverty and sacrifice wasn’t over yet.

Just a few years after her first divorce, Wendy was on the make, asking to date Jeff Davis, a rich lawyer 13 years her senior, who frequented her father’s dinner club. In short order, they married and had a child together.

The next thing Jeff Davis knew, he was paying off her college tuition, raising their kids by himself and taking out a loan to send her to Harvard Law School.

(Feminists rushed to the stores to buy the shoes Davis wore during her famous filibuster. I’d like the shoes she was wearing when she met her sugar daddy.)

Then Wendy left her kids with the sugar daddy in Texas — even the daughter from her first marriage — while she attended Harvard Law.

Slater says Davis’ kids lived with Jeff Davis in Texas while she attended law school. Wendy Davis claims her girls lived with her during her first year of law school. Let’s say that’s true. Why not the other two years? And what was the matter with the University of Texas Law School?

Sorry, MSNBC, I know you want to fixate on how many months Davis spent in the trailer park and her precise age when the first divorce went through. And that would be an incredibly stupid thing for conservatives to obsess on, if they were, in fact, obsessing on it. But I’m still stuck on her leaving her kids behind while she headed off to a law school 1,500 miles away.

The reason Wendy Davis’ apocryphal story was impressive is that single mothers have to run a household, take care of kids and provide for a family all by themselves. But Wendy was neither supporting her kids, nor raising them. If someone else is taking care of your kids and paying your tuition, that’s not amazing.

Hey — maybe Jeff Davis should run for governor! He’s the one who raised two kids, including a stepdaughter, while holding down a job and paying for his wife’s law school. There’s a hard-luck story!

Mr. Davis told the Dallas Morning News that Wendy dumped him as soon as he had finished paying off her Harvard Law School loan. “It was ironic,” he said. “I made the last payment, and it was the next day she left.”

In his defense, a lot of people are confused about the meaning of “ironic.” That’s not “ironic.” Rather, it’s what we call: “entirely predictable.”

It’s ironic — my car stopped running right after I ran out of gas.

It’s ironic — my house was broken into, and the next thing I knew all my valuables were missing.

It’s ironic — I was punched in the face right before my nose broke.

In his petition for divorce, Mr. Davis accused his wife of adultery. The court made no finding on infidelity, but awarded him full custody of their underage child and ordered Wendy to pay child support.

Wendy boasted to the Dallas Morning News: “I very willingly, as part of my divorce settlement, paid child support.” Would a divorced dad get a medal for saying that?

In response to Wayne Slater’s faux-”expose,” naturally Davis put out a statement denouncing … her probable Republican opponent, Greg Abbott. Again, Slater wrote the story. But Davis blathered on, blaming Abbott for the Dallas Morning News story and complaining that he hasn’t “walked a day in my shoes.”

About that she’s certainly right. Greg Abbott could never walk a day in her shoes or anyone else’s. He’s a paraplegic confined to a wheelchair.

I guess Wendy could teach him a lot about suffering.

Davis also said these attacks “won’t work, because my story is the story of millions of Texas women …” Yes, for example, Anna Nicole Smith. Though at least Smith had the decency not to ask for a paid education.

Could Justin Bieber Get Deported? (ABC News)

As Justin Bieber's legal troubles grow, so does the possibility that immigration officials could send the pop star back to Canada, where he was born.

Bieber's arrest early Thursday morning in Miami Beach for allegedly drag racing and driving under the influence -- first-degree misdemeanors -- are not necessarily crimes that would lead to deportation, New York City immigration attorney Michael Wildes, whose firm's clients have included John Lennon, told ABC News.

Justin Bieber Arrested on DUI Charges, Drag Racing

"But if ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) wanted to go after him, they could make a case," Wildes said. "That and the eggs is opening files in multiple government agencies and states, and could make it more likely."

The "eggs" Wildes referred to is the ongoing Los Angeles police investigation into a neighbor's accusation that Bieber threw eggs at his house and caused $20,000 worth of damage. Police searched the 19-year-old singer's home Jan. 14 for any connection between him and the egg-tossing incident and arrested a member of Bieber's entourage, Lil Za, for alleged drug possession during the search. Bieber has not been charged in the egg-throwing incident, but he could face a felony charge of vandalism if evidence indicates he was the culprit.

A Look at Justin Bieber's Past Troubles

Problems could arise if Bieber is convicted of an aggravated felony. Foreigners, such as Bieber, who are legal permanent residents can be deported if they are convicted of a serious crime, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

Bieber currently resides in the United States on an O-1 visa, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The government issues this type of visa to people with "extraordinary ability in the sciences, arts, education, business or athletics," according to the State Department's website.

If a crime is not a felony but involves "moral turpitude," that is, it shocks the conscience of a state, local or federal prosecutor, there is the possibility ICE could review a person's legal status, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

    See Justin Bieber's Arrest Report

Wildes, a former federal prosecutor, said, "DUI and drag racing are not crimes involving moral turpitude," but "if every week something else happens, the government will look at it.

"The young man is an extraordinary talent, and he's a teenager," Wildes said. "The government may be waiting for his conduct and maturity to catch up with his talent."

Meanwhile, a petition is already circulating on Whitehouse.gov by folks who would like to see Bieber sent back to Canada.

"He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nations youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society," the petition reads.

While 40 percent approve of Obama’s federal health-care law, 49 percent disapprove of it.

Adjust this for the 15% that always "oppose" the ACA because it's not Single-Payer, and you come up with 59 Approve - 34 Against.

Jackson was much like Obama in disregarding law.

The Creeks lost about 1/4 of Georgia and about 1/2 of Alabama in a power grab run by General Jackson. Shortly thereafter, he stole Florida fair and square. With his victory at New Orleans, he was untouchable.
