Palestinian ambassador in Prague seriously injured in blast

BY JAN LOPATKA
PRAGUE Wed Jan 1, 2014 9:39am EST

(Reuters) - The Palestinian ambassador to the Czech Republic was seriously injured in an explosion at his residence in Prague on Wednesday, a police spokeswoman said.
The blast occurred before midday and Ambassador Jamal al-Jamal's family was also at the two-storey residence in a northern suburb of the Czech capital. But no one else was hurt.
"There has been a detonation of a so-far unidentified explosive mixture," spokeswoman Andrea Zoulova said.
"The ambassador was injured ... and taken to hospital with serious injuries. At the moment it is impossible to specify what kind of explosive it was. A search ... is under way at the moment," she said.
A Palestinian official, told Reuters from Ramallah, "This explosion happened at his house. He recently moved there. He was taken to hospital. An investigation is under way."
A second Palestinian source told Reuters, "He moved an old case with him to the new house from the old house. And when he opened it, the explosion happened."
There were no visible signs of damage to the house from the street, according to a Reuters reporter at the scene.
Police cordoned off part of the street and half dozen police vehicles, two firetrucks and two ambulances were there.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said it will send a delegation to Prague "to help with the investigation".

  4. Israel marks 5th anniversary of Operation Cast Lead

    Article: Julie Webb-Pullman
    Israel marks 5th anniversary of Operation Cast Lead with air strikes on Gaza

    On the fifth anniversary of its brutal Operation Cast Lead, Israel launched a series of attacks on the Gaza Strip on Thursday night, injuring at least two people. One of the injured has been identified as Salem al-Asi, aged 41 years.

    The targets included the Al Nafaq area in Gaza City, which has barely recovered from being submerged by flood-waters during recent storms, adding further suffering for the already-reeling residents.

    Thursday’s attacks follow hard on the heels of Israel’s killing of three year old Hala Abu Sabikha whilst playing in her yard. Hala’s aunt and other relatives were also injured when an Israeli tank fired three shells at the family home.

    Israeli Human Rights organisation B'Tselem condemned that attack. “Deliberate firing at a home occupied by civilians, without its inhabitants having been given any prior warning and without the military ensuring that the civilians have vacated the premises, as appears to be the case in this situation, is unlawful," they reported.

    In response to what is a clear war crime, rockets were later fired from Gaza into Southern Israel, which according to Israel’s own military reports, “fell in open areas, causing no damage or injuries.”

    But in blatant contravention of proportionality of response, Israel then launched a series of air strikes on the Gaza population.

    According to the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights, Israeli forces have killed 4 civilians near the Gaza Strip border fence in 2013, and wounded 55, including 12 children.

    Rockets from Gaza have not killed or injured any Israelis in the same period, although one Israeli citizen, Bedouin labourer Salah Abu Latif, 22 was killed by sniper fire last week. The Palestinian Resistance Committees (PRC) claimed responsibility for that shooting.

    During Operation Cast Lead, some 1500 Palestinians were killed by Israel, while there were only 13 Israeli deaths, four of them from ‘friendly’ fire.

    Operation Cast Lead also ushered in a new era in the use of prohibited weaponry, such as white phosphorous and depleted uranium, for which Israel has still not been held to account in the international arena.

  5. RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — An Air Force report says a mechanical malfunction that started a fuel leak caused the crash of an Ellsworth Air Force Base B-1B bomber during an August training exercise over southeastern Montana.

    The report released by the Air Combat Command Accident Investigation Board concluded that about 7,000 pounds of fuel leaked into the aircraft and was ignited by hot ductwork, leading to a series of detonations in the plane

    The plane crashed Aug. 19 near Broadus, Mont.
    The four crew members safely ejected and escaped serious injury.
    No one on the ground was hurt.

    The report says there is no evidence that human error contributed to the crash that destroyed the $318 million aircraft.

  6. ’Hit the Enemy Hard’: Rabbi Recalls ‘Cast Lead’
    Rabbi Avichai Ronski looks back on bloody counter-terror battles, determines, ‘It was right to hit the enemy hard.’

    By Maayana Miskin
    First Publish: 12/22/2013, 1:21 PM

    Rabbi Avichai Ronski looked back Sunday at the Cast Lead counter-terror operation in Gaza, which ended five years ago on the Hebrew calendar, three weeks after it began.

    Rabbi Ronski, formerly the Chief Rabbi of the IDF, recalled the tension in the air before the battle. “There was tremendous tension among the soldiers, like a wound spring waiting for release,” he wrote in a post to Facebook.

    Soldiers were waiting “to strike at the terrorist organizations,” he said. The Cast Lead conflict followed an escalation in rocket attacks on civilians in southern Israel.

    Rabbi Ronski recalled the operation itself, which involved intense fighting in Gaza cities. Over 1,160 Gaza residents were killed in fighting, at least 709 of them terrorists. The “uncompromising” approach to fighting was a good thing, Rabbi Ronski declared.

    “Engineering units destroyed homes that were used to fire on Israel, and bulldozed forested areas used by terrorists to hide. All this without fear of legal repercussions, or pressure from abroad,” he said.

    “That is how we must fight the enemy: by striking a strong blow in order to create significant deterrence in the future,” he stated.

    Ten Israeli soldiers died in the operation, he noted. “Precious souls fell in this operation, each an entire world. But considering the scale of fighting, we had feared many more casualties,” he said.

    Three Israeli civilians were killed in rocket attacks, as well, and dozens of families lost their homes due to rocket damage.

    The operation was considered a tactical success in Israel due to the heavy blow to Hamas’ ranks, including the top command, and the destruction of most of the terrorist group’s smuggling tunnels and rocket supplies. Israel took heavy international criticism over the Gaza death toll, particularly as the international media parroted the Hamas line regarding heavy civilian casualties; Hamas later admitted that 700 of the casualties, not 50, were Hamas combatants.

    Israel conducted a subsequent major counter-terror operation in Gaza in late 2012. That operation, dubbed Pillar of Defense, focused on destroying Hamas infrastructure through airstrikes, and did not include a major ground operation. Hamas fired 1,506 rockets at Israeli cities during the conflict, killing four people.

  9. Two days after Christmas in 2008, the isolated and densely populated city of Gaza was visited by volley upon volley of deadly missile and mortar fire. The intense bombardment of "one of the most densely populated places on earth" (United Nations Development Programme) continued unabated for a period of three weeks. By the end of the assault, over 1,400 Palestinians had been killed and more than 5,000 wounded, many seriously. Between three and four hundred of the dead were children. A total of 13 Israelis were killed during the same time, four of them by the action of their own troops.

    This post offers a fifth anniversary commemoration of that tragic and highly destructive event. It offers a substantive audio presentation recounting the pivotal events in the history of Israel/Palestine from 1947 to the present through the reflections of a number of informed and articulate commentators. This post also includes a modified version of an essay published in December 2010 as a two-year commemoration of the assault and the events leading up to it.

    ...

    You'd have to be a recent immigrant from Outer Mongolia not to know of the role that people with Jewish names play in the coarsening of our culture. Almost every American knows this. It is just that most gentiles are too polite to mention it.
    ...
    By now, some Jewish readers will be cringing. You might be cursing me for making public the role of Jews in debasing the culture. Perhaps you subscribe to the notion that nobody has noticed. I sympathize and want you to know that I write about it only for the purpose of trying to solve the problem. Make no mistake, it is a problem, and the solution lies not in attempting to defame the critics, but in stepping forward to criticize the defamers. Indeed, if we Jews do not ourselves condemn the wrong that our brethren do, others with less sympathy eventually will do so.

      Jews Have Debased American
      & Jewish Culture -
      Our Worst Enemy

      By Rabbi Daniel Lapin

      This excerpt from Adolf Hitler's Mein Kampf shows how that evil megalomaniac roused his nation to hurl an avalanche of destruction at the Jewish people:

      "Was there any form of filth or profligacy, particularly in cultural life, without at least one Jew involved in it?
      What had to be reckoned heavily against the Jews in my eyes was when I became acquainted with their activity in the press, art, literature, and the theater... It sufficed to look at a billboard, to study the names behind the horrible trash they advertised...

      Is this why the Jews are called the "chosen people"?

      The fact that nine tenths of all literary filth, artistic trash, and theatrical idiocy can be set to the account of a people, constituting hardly one hundredth of all the country's inhabitants, could simply not be talked away; it was the plain truth." (Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler, Chapter II)

      It does not excuse Hitler or his Nazi thugs for us to acknowledge that this maniacal, master propagandist focused on a reality that resonated with the educated, and cultured Germans of his day. Not once in Mein Kampf did that monster charge Jews with being complicit in the killing of Christ two thousand years earlier. He knew that long-ago event, shrouded in mystery and theological profundity, would never goad enlightened people to murder.

      Instead, he drew attention to the obvious and inescapable;
      that which every German knew to be true.

      When will more Jewish leaders learn who their friends really are?
      When will they learn that those who incessantly bludgeon their friends eventually won't have any friends left?

      It would be foolish not to realize that most decent Americans are bothered far more by the trashing of American culture today than they are by our possible complicity in the killing of Christ two thousand years ago.

      Because so many of the most prominent trashers possess Jewish names and proudly proclaim their Jewish ethnicity, it becomes a Jewish responsibility to condemn the vulgarity by means of which they defame Judaism.

  14. Lebanese authorities have reportedly captured a militant leader suspected of leading a group that claimed responsibility for the bombing of the Iranian embassy in Beirut, in November.

    Majid bin Muhammad al-Majid is believed to be the leader of the al-Qaida-inspired Abdullah Azzam Brigades, which claimed responsibility for the 19 November attack that killed 25 people, including an Iranian diplomat.

    He is believed to have been arrested on Monday by an intelligence unit of the Lebanese military.

    Twin suicide bombers carried out the attack on the embassy, forensic tests revealed. At least one of the suicide attackers was Lebanese.

    The bombing was the first to target an embassy in the capital for the past 30 years and came amid several other explosions that targeted civilian neighbours in south Beirut, the heartland of the Shia Islamic militant group Hezbollah.

    The Abdullah Azzam Brigades have sworn to attack military targets linked to Iran or Hezbollah, as long as the militant group actively defends the regime of Bashar al-Assad, but have said they won't attack Shia civilians. Other al-Qaida aligned groups operating in Syria, such as the Islamic state of Iraq, and Jabhat al-Nusra, have frequently targeted Shia civilians.

    Hezbollah claimed Saudi Arabia was behind the Iranian embassy bombing but Riyadh strongly denied the claim. It was not yet clear which citizenship al-Majid holds.

    Czech police said no evidence had so far been found that indicated the explosion was an attack on the Palestinian envoy.

    The Palestinian Foreign Ministry said ambassador Jamal al-Jamal had been trying to open a safe that was recently moved to his new home and a Czech government source told Reuters that the explosion was probably caused by a security device on the unit.

    It was unclear what that was. Some safes can be fitted with mechanisms designed to destroy secret documents in the event of the lock being tampered with. The Czech source said the government did not believe it was a terrorist attack.

      Cain's brother Abel probably never saw it coming.

    When the Thomas Reuters Foundation published a survey on living conditions for women in the Arab world, comparisons with Israel were inevitable. The results of the survey were shocking. The much touted “Arab Spring” that was supposed to have delivered greater democratic freedoms to many Arab nations appeared to have overlooked that fundamental building block of modern Western democracy: women’s rights.

    But, in Israel the situation is completely different. "Close to 60 percent of Arab students in universities and colleges are women,” renowned expert Dr. Salah Azaiza told Israel Today. “And a great many of those women are seekingmaster’s degrees and doctorates" before going on to careers in hi-tech, medicine, politics and every other sphere of society.

    1. A raped girl is bad for the family: it shows that they can’t protect their women;
      that they have little social standing; and that they’re not respectable.

      It’s worse for the victim because once a woman, or a girl—or a boy—is known as the target of a rape she becomes so despised, so shamed, so worthless that she turns into public property.

      No one is raped only once.

      Speaking of threatening our children ...

      The Samson Option reveals many startling events that played a secret and significant role in the history of our times from the early 1960s through the Gulf War:

      • How, in the late 1970s, Israel not only stole reconnaissance intelligence from our most secret of satellites, the KH-11, but used that data to help target the Soviet Union;

      • How Jonathan Pollard, the American spy now serving a life sentence in jail, was a key figure in Israel's nuclear program (and how some of Pollard's intelligence was turned over to the Soviet Union at the express direction of Yitzhak Shamir, the Israeli prime minister);

      • How Israel created a false control room at the nuclear reactor at Dimona to give U.S. inspectors the false impression that the facility was solely for research;

      • How the Eisenhower administration made a concerted last-ditch effort in December 1960 to force Israel to acknowledge its nuclear ambitions—and failed;

      • How Israel threatened Henry Kissinger and Richard Nixon with the use of nuclear weapons on the third day of the 1973 Yom Kippur War, successfully blackmailing the White House to airlift much needed supplies;

      • How South Africa cooperated with Israel to create a mysterious 1979 "flash" in the South Atlantic, actually a test of an Israeli-South African nuclear artillery shell;

      • How Israel used a top London newspaper editor to help catch Mordecai Vanunu, its nuclear whistleblower;

      • How a prominent American Jewish Democratic party fund-raiser also raised money for the Israeli bomb—and was able to intervene repeatedly at the White House; and

      • How the American intelligence community was finally able to learn what Israel was doing at Dimona—though it was understood that no one's career would be enhanced by providing such intelligence to the White House.

      The Samson Option is ultimately a narrative of how the bomb influenced the diplomatic relations between Israel and America far more than was seen or understood by the press and the public.

      It shows that, in every sense, Israel was born a nuclear power.

      Since its founding, some of its leaders, including David Ben-Gurion and Ernst David Bergmann—
      - the little-known scientist who was the father of the Israeli bomb -
      —were determined that no future enemy would be able to carry out another Holocaust.

      Just as Samson brought down the temple and killed himself along with his enemies,
      so would Israel destroy Western Civilization.

    You're as full of shit as a Christmas turkey. If you're 65 you have Medicare.

    When your mind starts to slip you need to cut back on the lies; they get harder, and harder to keep track of.

    ---

    Not the first time you've judged others by yourself, no doubt won't be the last.

    One has to properly sign up, at the proper time of year, to get Medicare, you don't automatically get it when you turn 65.

    I remained covered by my wife's insurance until a year and a half after she stopped working. I then needed to sign up for Medicare within some time period, which I did not do.

    ...when I found out I had blown that one, I learned I was not qualified for the "special enrollment" period, and needed to wait to sign up for the "open enrollment" period, sometime around New Years.

    Then I found out for some reason I now have until March 31 to sign up, but will not be eligible for Medicare until this summer, July, I think

    I thought you were the insurance expert, I assumed you knew all this stuff.

      not counting loan guarantees. Last year, figured Gazit, American support accounted for 1.5 percent of Israel’s GDP, 4 percent of the government’s budget and 24 percent of security outlays.

    11. thanks for the AID, but AID has strings and costs.

      most of the 110 billion was spent on American weapons systems, ammo and TRAILERS...

      yep trailers.. you know those settlements that are bitched about? Are being supported by USA trailers...

      Would those looters be the American corporations selling overpriced stuff that those that accept aid are forced to purchase?

      Let's face it, corporate welfare is quite the enterprise for American corporations

  29. Israel did not try to assassinate him with a bomb. Unless it was a matter of life or deaf, the risks of collateral damage would have been too high. Suppose the device had exploded while he was driving?

    Given his high rank, any number of adversaries might have wanted him dead. The attack could have been a political statement, but no one yet has taken responsibility, which ruins the value of a politically motivated attack. It might have been an inside job, which case I find highly likely - settling a score comes to mind as does his removal from power without embarrassment to the regime.

    Conspicuously, FATAH has not blamed Israel in the usual manner. Thus, the PA already may know those responsible and know that the investigation will not point to an Israeli connection.

    If the PA had set up the "trunk" to self-destruct with tampering, an explosive charge would have been a poor choice since intact or damaged documents would have been blown out of the trunk. To maximize the probability of completely destroying the contents, WP or elemental Na would have been far better choices.

    A work place accident in the construction of a suicide device is not unheard of, but one would expect that work to be done by the ambassador's security team and somewhere other than his private residence.

    Time will tell.

He no longer brags about how he in fact checked out and CONFIRMED that a complaint was filed about him with the AZ FBI but how I was the subject of an ongoing national security risk. I guess his lying about have a informer in the FBI was false or if it was true? Maybe they wrapped him on the wrists for telling about Complaints and On going investigations on blogs.

      The very fact that we do KNOW who he is, as does the AZ FBI, kinda limits him as he doesn't want to be arrested (being convicted? who knows) for making death threats, this could open up a whole bag of worms for him, as he did commit crimes against folks down in central america, all without statue of limitations as they are described as war crimes...

    Oh yeah, thanks rat for bringing that up.

    the SNEAK attack by Egypt on Israel.

    Israel won that war and captured the Sinai. (2nd time) By all rights the Sinai should be Israeli now...

    If there were any threats to use nuclear weapons against the Egyptians? They were reasonable and legal to do so. Now if America, under Nixon, was trying to punish Israel? And Israel made it clear it would not allow to be genocided? Good for Israel.

    America has used atomic weapons for far less....

    Israel to protect it's life? Has the right to use whatever weapon it has against a fascist, genocidal nation.

  39. Who Did It?

    , a two-man Israeli hit team was on the prowl in Amman, Jordan, looking for Hamas leader Khaled Meshal.

    Obeying secret orders to avenge suicide bombings in Israel,
    the assassins drove a non-descript drab-green Hyundai to Meshal's house and followed him on his route to work.

    When Meshal climbed out of his car, the assassins jumped out, too.
    According to witnesses, one assassin had a gray device strapped to his arm and approached Meshal from behind. The assassin lifted his arm in the direction of Meshal's left ear. The device emitted a popping sound -
    - and forced a lethal toxin into Meshal's skin.

    The assassins fled.
    Meshal collapsed and was rushed to a hospital.
    There, doctors puzzled over the curious malady that soon left Meshal clinging to life on a respirator.

    But this dramatic incident did not end as a medical mystery.
    Instead, it touched off an international furor.
    Enraged by an assassination attempt in his own capital,
    Jordan's King Hussein blamed Israel and demanded that Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu deliver
    the antidote to save Meshal's life. If Netanyahu refused, King Hussein warned of reprisals,
    including the possible severing of relations with Israel.

    Under normal circumstances,
    Netanyahu might have weathered this diplomatic storm behind a protective barrier of intelligence "deniability."
    He might have rejected allegations of Israeli complicity and pretended not to know what had caused Meshal's illness.

    Meshal might have died an unexplained death and the truth would have disappeared
    into a haze of historical suspicions.

    There even might have been some mocking stories in The New Republic or other staunchly pro-Israeli publications commenting on the cultural proclivity of Arabs to believe in baseless "conspiracy theories."

    Israeli assassins with a mysterious toxin?
    The Israelis, of all people, using poison gas?

    But the Meshal affair was one of those rare moments when truth was plucked from the thicket of intelligence deceptions. This happened -- as it does occasionally -- because of the capture of clear physical evidence that could not be cleverly spun by propagandists.

    Netanyahu could not dismiss King Hussein's allegations because Meshal's bodyguards chased the assassins -
    - first on foot, then by car and then on foot again.

    One bodyguard, trained in martial arts, subdued one of the assassins by force and the other surrendered.

    Their false identities as Canadian tourists quickly collapsed and
    the two were identified as agents of Israel's foreign intelligence service, the Mossad.

    Netanyahu had no choice but to admit Israeli complicity.
    His fall-back was to justify the attack as appropriate retaliation for the suicide bombings.

    [For details on the Meshal case, see Barton Gellman's account in The Washington Post, Oct. 6, 1997]

    But the Meshal case carries another lesson:
    investigators should not reject too quickly other stories of controversial Israeli intelligence operations
    .
    Since World War II, Israeli operatives have engaged in many daring exploits,
    first to found the Jewish state and since then to defend its fragile security.
