“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Changes in the blog

Due to some egregious bad manners and habitual disruptive behavior of a few, I find it necessary to change the comment section of the blog. Other changes will be made, but at a minimum I will require an email address from commenters. I reserve the right to open comments up at certain times, but I do intend to prohibit those whose only intent is to disrupt.

No email will be shared with anyone. I am not looking for pen-pals. I moderate and provide creative content to aprox 40 other commercial blogs and have a limited  amount of time to waste dealing with a few senior delinquents.

You can apply to be a blog member by sending an email to:

If there is enough interest, we will continue. If not, no hard feelings but I am not wasting time that I value.

  1. Four have applied and invitations have been sent to all four. It is a full invitation which give posting and authoring privileges.Hopefully, this will be a new beginning.

  2. This comment has been removed by the author.

  3. Special events for January 9:

2014: The blog formerly known as the Elephant Bar goes members only.

  4. I saw a brief review of this yesterday, done by Woodward, I believe. If Obama were up for reelection, it could be devastating. It does not hurt Hillary as far as I could discern. Some members of Congress are going to come out looking like pompous prima donnas. Obama’s staff seems nice enough, but not high wattage.

It seemed to me, after a very cursory look, that Gate's hates the system.

Robert Gates's memoirs add to the sense that Obama's presidency is unraveling

    1. When Gates resigned, the President said, "I suppose this means you're gonna piss on my grave, right?" Gates replied that he would not, because he promised himself that he would never wait in another line again.

    2. Gates could have disclosed some of this before the last election.

It would have been the right thing to do.

    3. "never wait in another line again"

  5. Thank you Deuce. It is an honor.

I promise to be on my best behavior ever.

    1. That's like saying Fuck Tha Police is the best rap song, ever. Well, it's still rap.

  6. Does Christie still have a fat chance of becoming President or is it now a bridge too far?

Since he did well in the press conference seems he is still in the game, unless it comes out that he knew about it.

    If that happens he's toast.

My wife likes him saying at least he can control the traffic......

    1. There's a woman who died because an ambulance couldn't get to her. Mark Steyn is pissed.

    2. Big issue.

I think I can just see my way to a criminal charge being brought against the closers for reckless endangerment.

A big civil suit for wrongful death is a certainty.

    3. Speaking of lawsuits.......just up on Drudge....

Lawsuit filed against Christie, others over jams

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- Six New Jersey residents have filed a federal lawsuit against Gov. Chris Christie, the state of New Jersey, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and others over traffic jams in September.

The suit filed in federal court Thursday appears to be the first civil claim over traffic jams that appear to have been caused as political punishment for the Fort Lee mayor.

The plaintiffs want it certified as a class action.

Lawyer Rosemarie Arnold says she filed it after learning this week that lane closures on an approach to the George Washington Bridge were "deliberate actions." She says that her clients were late for work and that one suffered a panic attack.

Christie has denied involvement. His spokesman did not respond to an email seeking comment.

One must admit the lawyers are quick on the draw these days.

      Seeking a class action, too.

Tip of the ice berg.....wrongful death and reckless endangerment on deck....

    5. At least he fired two top aides. How many people has obammy fired over the Ben Gazzi thing, or the IRS thing, or the fast and furious thing, or the NSA thing, or the healthcare rollout thingie?

    6. Zero, at last count.

Think of the chaos created if those bridges around Seattle went down, or were slowed down !

All of King County would belong to the hikers and bikers.

    7. Lovely Lady in a lovely primeval forest.

      Look at that moss!

  7. If I understood correctly what I just heard on Fox, one of the guys behind the Benghazi attack used to live at................................Gitmo.

    1. Well the important thing was clearing out Gitmo as fast as possible so the President could keep his promise to close it.

  8. Nine have applied. Nine have been approved. Quirk, Gag, and Doug check your email.

  9. Rufus and Jenny check your email

  10. Once an alfalfa farmer and a Mark Twain fan were speaking over coffee.

Notice, said the farmer, how the cream swirls similar to how galaxies form in space.

Notice, said the Mark Twain devotee, who is holding the spoon.

    1. I will be reporting in detail on the behavior of you, Fely, old man Redinger and Quirk at the Seattle game on Saturday from the Squawk Domeless.

How dumb are people in Seattle? Damn near the rainiest place in the lower 48 and they can't think to put a roof on it.

    2. Looking at your jibe a little closer Miss T, I am beginning to see some deeper meanings to it. Whether intended or not I have no idea.
