COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Snowden is an international hero. He has exposed a level of corruption and abuse of power that is reminiscent of the Stasi in former Eastern Germany. Is the police state one of the ideals America was founded on? Is the premise that anyone, singly, and everyone, collectively, has the potential to be a traitor and, therefore, everyone must undergo surveillance? We know from the reactions of those who sit in the Senate and House committees that, had Snowden gone to them, nothing would have been done and we wouldn't know what we know today.

EDITORIAL
Edward Snowden, Whistle-Blower
Published: January 1, 2014

Seven months ago, the world began to learn the vast scope of the National Security Agency’s reach into the lives of hundreds of millions of people in the United States and around the globe, as it collects information about their phone calls, their email messages, their friends and contacts, how they spend their days and where they spend their nights. The public learned in great detail how the agency has exceeded its mandate and abused its authority, prompting outrage at kitchen tables and at the desks of Congress, which may finally begin to limit these practices.

The revelations have already prompted two federal judges to accuse the N.S.A. of violating the Constitution (although a third, unfortunately, found the dragnet surveillance to be legal). A panel appointed by President Obama issued a powerful indictment of the agency’s invasions of privacy and called for a major overhaul of its operations.
All of this is entirely because of information provided to journalists by Edward Snowden, the former N.S.A. contractor who stole a trove of highly classified documents after he became disillusioned with the agency’s voraciousness. Mr. Snowden is now living in Russia, on the run from American charges of espionage and theft, and he faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life looking over his shoulder.
Considering the enormous value of the information he has revealed, and the abuses he has exposed, Mr. Snowden deserves better than a life of permanent exile, fear and flight. He may have committed a crime to do so, but he has done his country a great service. It is time for the United States to offer Mr. Snowden a plea bargain or some form of clemency that would allow him to return home, face at least substantially reduced punishment in light of his role as a whistle-blower, and have the hope of a life advocating for greater privacy and far stronger oversight of the runaway intelligence community.
Mr. Snowden is currently charged in a criminal complaint with two violations of the Espionage Act involving unauthorized communication of classified information, and a charge of theft of government property. Those three charges carry prison sentences of 10 years each, and when the case is presented to a grand jury for indictment, the government is virtually certain to add more charges, probably adding up to a life sentence that Mr. Snowden is understandably trying to avoid.
The president said in August that Mr. Snowden should come home to face those charges in court and suggested that if Mr. Snowden had wanted to avoid criminal charges he could have simply told his superiors about the abuses, acting, in other words, as a whistle-blower.
“If the concern was that somehow this was the only way to get this information out to the public, I signed an executive order well before Mr. Snowden leaked this information that provided whistle-blower protection to the intelligence community for the first time,” Mr. Obama said at a news conference. “So there were other avenues available for somebody whose conscience was stirred and thought that they needed to question government actions.”
In fact, that executive order did not apply to contractors, only to intelligence employees, rendering its protections useless to Mr. Snowden. More important, Mr. Snowden told The Washington Post earlier this month that he did report his misgivings to two superiors at the agency, showing them the volume of data collected by the N.S.A., and that they took no action. (The N.S.A. says there is no evidence of this.) That’s almost certainly because the agency and its leaders don’t consider these collection programs to be an abuse and would never have acted on Mr. Snowden’s concerns.
In retrospect, Mr. Snowden was clearly justified in believing that the only way to blow the whistle on this kind of intelligence-gathering was to expose it to the public and let the resulting furor do the work his superiors would not. Beyond the mass collection of phone and Internet data, consider just a few of the violations he revealed or the legal actions he provoked:
■ The N.S.A. broke federal privacy laws, or exceeded its authority, thousands of times per year, according to the agency’s own internal auditor.
■ The agency broke into the communications links of major data centers around the world, allowing it to spy on hundreds of millions of user accounts and infuriating the Internet companies that own the centers. Many of those companies are now scrambling to install systems that the N.S.A. cannot yet penetrate.
■ The N.S.A. systematically undermined the basic encryption systems of the Internet, making it impossible to know if sensitive banking or medical data is truly private, damaging businesses that depended on this trust.
■ His leaks revealed that James Clapper Jr., the director of national intelligence, lied to Congress when testifying in March that the N.S.A. was not collecting data on millions of Americans. (There has been no discussion of punishment for that lie.)
■ The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court rebuked the N.S.A. for repeatedly providing misleading information about its surveillance practices, according to a ruling made public because of the Snowden documents. One of the practices violated the Constitution, according to the chief judge of the court.
■ A federal district judge ruled earlier this month that the phone-records-collection program probably violates the Fourth Amendment of the Constitution. He called the program “almost Orwellian” and said there was no evidence that it stopped any imminent act of terror.
The shrill brigade of his critics say Mr. Snowden has done profound damage to intelligence operations of the United States, but none has presented the slightest proof that his disclosures really hurt the nation’s security. Many of the mass-collection programs Mr. Snowden exposed would work just as well if they were reduced in scope and brought under strict outside oversight, as the presidential panel recommended.

When someone reveals that government officials have routinely and deliberately broken the law, that person should not face life in prison at the hands of the same government. That’s why Rick Ledgett, who leads the N.S.A.’s task force on the Snowden leaks, recently told CBS News that he would consider amnesty if Mr. Snowden would stop any additional leaks. And it’s why President Obama should tell his aides to begin finding a way to end Mr. Snowden’s vilification and give him an incentive to return home.

Awarding it to Snowden would revitalize its stature restore some meaning.

One wonders how he could show such callous disregard of the human carnage, the 600,000 or even more dead Americans, all that pain, and treat it so lightly as a wind riffle across the prairie?

It has been documented that Fudd is …
…. a fella that could not even protect the women of his family from a rapist.

The girls and he, combined to create a Zone of Silence about the assault.
He broke down and told us about it, self discipline never being on of Fudd's character points. It seems that 'Breaking Cover' was an attempt to clear his conscience. Saying he had only been concerned with appearances, his daughter's reputation not her or their family friends and neighbor's safety, not his community's security.

After she had been raped, after the news leaked out of Fudd's butt, there were suspicions in the community that the assault may well have been a "family affair".

Farmer Fudd, he and the girls subsequently moved from that town.

His wife will no longer sleep in the same room with him.

Toronto Mayor Rob Fudd files to run again

TORONTO – Toronto Mayor Rob Fudd has put his name on the ballot to run for another term.

Fudd was the first candidate to show up at City Hall when registration opened Thursday for the city's municipal election Oct. 27.

The conservative mayor of Canada's largest city has said he would run again, even after admitting last year that he had smoked crack "in a drunken stupor."

Fudd has faced intense pressure to resign over his drug use and revelations of other erratic behavior that have embarrassed many Canadians.

The Toronto City Council has stripped Fudd of most of his powers, but he continues to receive support from some in the city's more conservative suburbs.

    A Mission Gone Wrong

Why are we still fighting the drug war?

    by Mattathias Schwartz

The Honduras mission was part of a larger program called Operation Anvil.

Honduras was not a war zone, so FAST worked under the State Department, using Huey helicopters instead of swifter Black Hawks. In Honduras, FAST could not call in U.S. military forces to fight alongside it, as in Afghanistan.

But in some ways Anvil was familiar, the latest in a long line of overseas counter-narcotics operations with names like Blast Furnace, Ghost Zone, Snowcap, and Zorro.

In addition to using helicopters to spirit agents to remote locations and seize drugs in transit,
the U.S. has tried paying coca farmers to switch crops, spraying herbicides out of helicopters,
raiding jungle laboratories, stopping and searching small fishing boats, forcing down aircraft,
tapping phones, hiring informants, and extraditing drug lords.

Anvil, like many of its predecessors, combined the legal framework of a police action with the hardware and the rhetoric of war.

      Honduras is often referred to as “downrange”; drug traffickers are “the enemy”;
the Mosquito Coast is a “battlespace.”

In a broad sense, FAST was nothing new.

What is remarkable is how many times the U.S. has tried such militarized counter-narcotics programs and how long it has been apparent how little they amount to.

The drug war has split in two, and there are increasing differences in how it is fought.

In August, the Department of Justice advised federal prosecutors that while possessing a small amount of marijuana remains a federal crime, it is not an “enforcement priority.”

A majority of U.S. citizens support decriminalizing the possession of marijuana,
and Colorado and Washington have passed ballot measures legalizing it.

“People see a war as a war on them,” Gil Kerlikowske, the current drug czar, told the Wall Street Journal, in 2009. “We’re not at war with people in this country.”

    3. Mattathias SchwartzThu Jan 02, 10:52:00 AM EST

Overseas, however, the U.S. approach to drugs still looks a lot like war.

The D.E.A., assisted by the U.S. military, acts as an international police force,
coördinating with foreign militaries through a network of offshore bases.

Of the twenty-five billion dollars that the federal government spent fighting drugs last year,
forty per cent went to treatment and prevention programs.

The rest went to “supply reduction.” In Mexico, the $1.9 billion Mérida Initiative
has relied on an enforcement-driven strategy somewhat similar to Plan Colombia’s.

In 2006, President Felipe Calderón decided to deploy the Mexican military to fight drug cartels; since then, more than seventy thousand people have been killed in drug-related violence.

Another twenty-six thousand people were reported missing.
At least ninety per cent of U.S.-bound cocaine continues to move through the country.

      In Washington,
one of Mérida’s most prominent faces is Assistant Secretary of State William Brownfield,
formerly Ambassador to Colombia and Venezuela,
who was also instrumental in organizing Operation Anvil.

In June, Brownfield told a Senate subcommittee that the criteria for judging Mérida’s success should shift
from “inputs” (aircraft, equipment, and training)
to “outputs” (homicide rate, conviction rate, interdictions).

“If the endgame is perfection, we’ll never get there,” Brownfield said.
“At least, not in this world.”

In Congress, some are losing patience.
“There is great fatigue surrounding our drug programs in the Western Hemisphere,”
      a staff member told me.
“We don’t have good ideas. We don’t have good answers. We don’t have good anything.
But we also know that doing nothing is a problem. So the whole thing is on autopilot.
When you’re in the machine, it’s very difficult to say anything other than
‘Keep shooting. Keep decapitating the cartels.’

“The war on drugs has simply not worked,” George P. Shultz, who served as Secretary of State under Reagan, told me. “It hasn’t kept drugs out of this country.”

    4. Mattathias SchwartzThu Jan 02, 10:54:00 AM EST

I asked Shultz why ineffectual policies have persisted.

“We haven’t felt the full effects of it ourselves,” he said.
“It took us twelve years to learn that Prohibition wasn’t working.
There was Al Capone, there was the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre. The violence was here.

Now we have outsourced the violence, in effect, to Mexico and Guatemala and Honduras.”

    3. Let’s hear from Max Blumenthal:

Goliath is the first on-the ground, journalistic portrait of the real Israel that has been whitewashed and covered up by the mainstream American media. The book reveals a society overrun with extremism, with open racism emitting from the highest levels of government, inspiring anti-Arab and anti-African riots from the West Bank to Tel Aviv while the siege of Gaza deepens. Many of the pivotal events I detailed at length through background research and first-hand reporting were buried or ignored by the New York Times and have scarcely been examined even in progressive American media.

The atmosphere I captured in the pages of Goliath is the one that veteran Israelis from Uri Avnery to former Maariv editor Amnon Danker to former Haaretz editor-in-chief David Landau have described in no uncertain terms as fascistic. Through the experience of almost a year on the ground in Israel-Palestine, I was able to capture the feeling of the atmosphere they described and to bring it to life on the pages of my book. Obviously, pro-Israel zealots were not terribly happy about this.

There was also the fact that I did not write Goliath with concern for Israel’s anguished “soul,” or with any abiding belief in the absolute necessity of a Jewish state; that I did not advance the fantastical notion that the Israel that exists behind the 1949 Armistice Lines is a vibrant democracy. And I refused to pay lip service to the idea that the Palestinians were partially at fault for their own dispossession — that “both sides” were responsible for the crisis. This is what you are expected to do if you wish to cater to Jewish-American opinion from a liberal perspective. I refused to take this approach not only because I reject the Zionist narrative but because it is deeply dishonest and actually requires intellectual contortions about the present and the willfull distortion of the past. That my book managed to gain traction despite my rejection of the established liberal Zionist narrative framework was another reason so many viewed it as threatening.

I presented Israel without sentimentalism or nostalgia, painting a portrait of a state that controls all people between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean sea under a regime of ethnic separation with no national borders. Some of those who have grown accustomed to the hackeneyed liberal Zionist narrative found my factual portrayal of Israeli society deeply discomfiting. And neocon types were absolutely infuriated that I was able to generate publicity and attention. But of all those who have attempted to destroy my book, none have been able to challenge it on its merits or disprove any substantial facts in it. None.

      Delete
    4. He continues:

...If Zionism had succeeded in building a democratic state that enjoyed normal relations with its neighbors, the international hasbara apparatus that exists to crush criticism of Israel and propagandize on behalf the Jewish state would be superfluous. Unfortunately, this was never the point of the Zionist movement. Israel is the product of a settler-colonial project that requires perpetual campaign of violent demographic engineering against the wishes of the indigenous Palestinian population. The project continues before our very eyes in the Negev Desert, the South Hebron Hills, and along the electrified walls of the Gaza ghetto. Unless you are some kind of bellicose nationalist, there is not much about it to be proud of.

In the post-Oslo Israel that I bring to life on the pages of Goliath, Jewish Israeli society has doubled down on its anachronistic settler-colonial project, entering what could be described as the “neo-Zionist” era. With no hope of achieving international legitimacy and little desire to do so, Israel must call on its partisans across the globe to crush political opposition by all means necessary.

The looming terminal stage of Zionism will be marked by crusades to crush the free speech rights of citizens inside Israel and across the West — to restrict their very ability to organize for the rights of Palestinians. Former Israeli ambassador to the US Michael Oren reflected the increasingly anti-democratic undercurrent of pro-Israel advocacy when he took to Politico to call on Congress to pass laws illegalizing Palestine solidarity activism and punishing Americans for protesting Israeli officials in public forums. 11 students at UC-Irvine have already faced a criminal prosecution for protesting Oren for literally two minuntes during a public event. So the campaign to block me from discussing my book at venues across the United States was of a part with the McCarthyite tactics that form the heart of today’s pro-Israel playbook.

After all, these are the same people who have enabled apartheid to retrench itself across this country, either by actively driving inequality or through cynical negotiations with the corporate forces behind it. If Americans want to see genuine change in the Holy Land, they can participate in grassroots, Palestinian-led campaigns like the BDS (Boycott, Divest, and Sanction) movement. This movement is growing rapidly and sending shockwaves through the pro-Israel establishment. And that’s a very good thing considering that Palestinians may have few effective tactics left to resist a project aimed at their absolute dispossession.

    3. The Ottoman Standard

The Israeli government has, to a large extent, continued the Ottoman legal system in regard to land ownership.

Thus, today the vast proportion of land within the State of Israel (roughly 93%) is owned and managed either by the Israel Lands Administration (ILA) or the JNF.  This figure includes much of such extensive regions as the Negev and the Judean Wilderness (near the Dead Sea), which are sparsely populated.

Jewish settlements in the State of Israel usually are located on lands that are owned by the ILA or the JNF and that have been consigned to each settlement through long-term leases.

Less than 7% of the land in the State of Israel is privately owned.

    5. For political Zionism to come to fruition –

      - for a Jewish state to be created in Palestine -

it was necessary to carry out as large a scale as possible ethnic cleansing of the country’s unwanted Arab natives.

But even in 1948, and especially in 1967,
Israel was unable to fully ‘cleanse’ the land of the Palestinians.

As a result, Israel’s fallback position was to implement an apartheid regime of exclusion and discrimination.

Where the dispossession had been most effective
      – inside Israel’s pre-1967 borders –
      apartheid could be less explicit.

But in the OPT, home to a vast majority of Palestinians,
Israeli apartheid had to be overt and iron-fisted.

“Why have the Palestinians continued to reject a compromise with Israel, from the very beginning of the state in 1948, to Arafat’s ‘No’ at Camp David?

The myth of ‘brave but peace-seeking’ Israel always let down by violent, compromise-rejecting Arabs is powerful and enduring.

Israel’s defenders argue that if only the Palestinians had accepted partition in 1948, rather than seeking ‘Israel’s destruction’, everything would have been different.

Likewise, for the propaganda war of the Second Intifada, the Palestinians – and Arafat in particular – were said to have turned down a ‘best ever’ offer from Israel at Camp David, instead opting for violence.

      Let’s take a look at 1948 first.
The real story of Israel’s creation – the Nakba –
… is very different from the sanitized, Zionist narrative.

When the UN proposed partition, Jews owned less than 7 per cent of the land, made up a third of the population – yet over half of the land of Palestine was assigned to the Jewish state.

Moreover, even in its proposed borders,
the Jewish state’s population would be almost half Arab.

Ironically, while Palestinians are often accused of ‘rejectionism’,
the Zionist leadership only accepted the idea of partition for tactical reasons.

Prime Minister Ben Gurion described a
“‘partial Jewish state’” as just the beginning:

“‘a powerful impetus in our historic efforts to redeem the land in its entirety.’”

In a meeting of the Jewish leadership in 1938,
Ben Gurion shared his assumption that

“‘after we build up a strong force following the establishment of the state – we will abolish the partition of the country and we will expand to the whole Land of Israel.’”

    6. Love the talk about Israel and land. Israel sits on 1/900th of the middle east.

Rat bitches about israel controlling 93% of the 1/900th as state controlled.

      Fine… great example

tell us, out of the 899/900th of the arab occupied world, what is the total land mass privately owned?

Don't play with %'s, tell us in actual land mass about the 899/900th of the entire middle east.

Bet you can't… bet you won't…

Bet you, if you could even figure out the truth? The arab world's citizens are locked out from owning land at a far greater rate than israel, where even ARABS own land.

  18. Arms cache found at Prague home of dead Palestinian envoy

Illegal arsenal contained enough weapons for 10 men; Palestinians change story about safe in explosion which killed Jamel al-Jamal Wednesday

By Times of Israel staff January 2, 2014, 5:29 pm 16

A large, illegal weapons stockpile was found Thursday at the home of the Palestinian ambassador in Prague, Jamel al-Jamal, Czech media reported, a day after al-Jamal was killed in an explosion there.

Respekt, a Czech weekly newspaper, reported that the arsenal was enough to arm a unit of ten men.

Czech police spokeswoman Andrea Zoulova confirmed that arms had been found in the ambassador’s residence, which is located within a newly constructed Palestinian diplomatic mission in the city.

Channel 2 News reported that the stockpile included heavy firearms, that it was held illegally, and that its existence had not been previously known to the Czech authorities.

Reuters quoted an unnamed Palestinian official claiming that the mission’s staff had submitted the weapons to Czech authorities. He said they had been retrieved from an old sack, untouched since the era of the Cold War. But Prague police chief Martin Vondrasek told local radio that the weapons “have not gone through a registration process in the Czech Republic.”

Al-Jamal, 56, was killed Wednesday when a safe at his home exploded. He and his wife were at home at the time of the safe’s explosion, according to Palestinian Embassy spokesman Nabil El-Fahel. Al-Jamal was seriously injured and rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short while later.

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riad Malki said no foul play was suspected, and claimed that the safe had been left untouched for more than 20 years.

Later, however, El-Fahel told Czech radio that the safe had been in regular use. ”[The safe] was used on a daily basis at the embassy and it was opened and closed almost every day,” the embassy spokesman said.

The safe was recently moved from the old embassy building, Malki had claimed, adding that it had come from a building that used to house the Palestinian Liberation Organization’s offices in the 1980s. “The ambassador decided to open it. After he opened it, apparently something happened inside (the safe) and went off,” Malki said.

Al-Jamal was born in 1957, in Beirut’s Sabra and Shatilla refugee camp. His family is originally from Jaffa in what is now Israel.

He joined Fatah in 1975. In 1979, he was appointed deputy ambassador in Bulgaria.

Starting in 1984, he served as a diplomat in Prague, eventually as acting ambassador. From 2005-2013, he served as consul general in Alexandria, Egypt.

In October 2013, he was appointed ambassador in Prague.

Since 1967, Israel has destroyed approximately 27,000 Palestinian structures in the occupied territories (the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip), including more than 24,000 homes, according to ICAHD.

Since the renewal of negotiations in August 2013, Israel has destroyed approximately 25 Palestinian homes, in addition to dozens of other structures, leaving approximately 200 people homeless.

According to the UN, between January and September 2013, 862 Palestinians were displaced by Israeli demolitions, compared to 886 (including 468 children) in all of 2012.

In 2012, a total of 600 Palestinian structures were demolished by Israel in the occupied territories, including at least 189 homes, according to ICAHD.
This figure doesn’t include “self-demolitions” whereby Palestinians destroy their own homes ...
rather than have Israel do it and charge them an additional fine.

One Bedouin village, Al-Araqib, in the Negev desert in the south of Israel, has been destroyed more than 50 times by Israel since July 2010.

Between 2005 and 2012, Israel demolished approximately 1500 Palestinian homes due to owners lacking hard-to-obtain construction permits.

Between 1993 and 2000, when the Oslo Accords were being negotiated between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization,
Israel destroyed almost 1700 Palestinian homes in the occupied territories.

Immediately following Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza in 1967, approximately 6000 Palestinian homes were demolished, including four entire villages in the Latrun area, along with dozens of homes in the Mughrabi Quarter of Jerusalem’s Old City, which were destroyed to make way for a plaza for the Western Wall.

In 1971, between 2000 and 6000 Palestinian homes were destroyed in Gaza in an effort to pacify the newly occupied territory.

      During Israel’s creation (1948-49),
Zionist and then Israeli forces expelled approximately 750,000 Palestinian Arabs from their ancestral lands in order to create a Jewish majority state of Israel.

In the process, more than 400 Palestinian population centers were systematically destroyed, including thousands of homes, businesses, and houses of worship.

Israel alone issues the identity cards that determine the ability of Palestinians to work and their freedom of movement.

Meanwhile, the international organization of the Brotherhood and Hamas plan to carry out attacks and bombings against churches in northern Sinai during Orthodox Christmas celebrations on Tuesday, the Egyptian daily Al-Youm al-Sabaa quoted senior security sources as saying.

They plan to use suicide car bombers from the military wing of Hamas, Izzadin Kassam, as well as plant bombs in the walls of churches and monasteries, the sources said.

Members of the Brotherhood and Hamas prepared tons of TNT explosives in the Gaza Strip to be used against the churches, the security sources told the newspaper.

Churches have increased their security measures in preparation for the holiday, El-Watan newspaper reported.

Hamas has, in essence, declared war on both Egypt and Israel. That was a terrible bit of strategy.

Off and on for years, Israel has asked Egypt to again govern Gaza. Egypt has had no interest. However, given the role Hamas has chosen in the destabilization of Egypt, the Egyptians might just give it a go. Such an arrangement would greatly simplify a host of problems facing Egypt and Israel.

    Sarah Hurtubise

Obamacare may have promised health insurance for the masses. But on its first day, it’s left more Americans without coverage than before the law was passed.

More than 4.7 million Americans had their health insurance canceled as a result of any of the thousand-plus-page law’s new rules, The Associated Press reports, but the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) confirmed Tuesday that between federal and state exchanges, just two million Americans have signed up for Obamacare coverage. (RELATED: Obama administration announces net loss of at least 3 million insurance plans)

The Obama administration has yet to announce the final tally of full enrollments, which are only confirmed once customers have made their first payment, but Cato Institute health policy expert Michael Cannon warns that not all those who signed up will complete their purchases, potentially leaving the White House with an even lower bottom line.

San Antonio Home of Ramos Arizpe Mayor Ramon Rodriquez Oceguara

In November I ran across a story in a Mexican newspaper, Sin Embargo, about the mayor of a small town in Coahuila purchasing a “retreat” home” in San Antonio, Texas that is about 24,000 sq.ft, and has five bedrooms and the same number of bathrooms, plus a pool with spa included and space for three cars in the garage.

The one-story house also features a game room, bar, studio and jacuzzi and other amenities.

The records show that he paid nearly $11,000,000 pesos ($850,000 USD) for the mansion while earning $24,500 pesos ($2,200 USD) a month as Mayor of Ramos Arizpe, a small city of about 48,000 close to Saltillo.

Chinese Iron Trade Fuels Conflict with Caballeros Templarios

    by Dave Graham for Reuters

When the leaders of Mexico and China met last summer, there was much talk of the need to deepen trade between their nations. Down on Mexico's Pacific coast, a drug gang was already making it a reality.
The Knights Templar cartel, (Caballeros Templarios) steadily diversifying into other businesses, became so successful at exporting iron ore to China that the Mexican Navy in November had to move in and take over the port in Lazaro Cardenas, a city that has become one of the gang's main cash generators.
This steelmaking center, drug smuggling hot spot and home of a rapidly growing container port in the western state of Michoacán occupies a strategic position on the Pacific coast, making it a natural gateway for burgeoning trade with China.
Lazaro Cardenas opened to container traffic just a decade ago, and with a harbor deep enough to berth the world's largest ships, it already aims to compete with Los Angeles to handle Asian goods bound for the U.S. market.
But that future is in doubt unless the government can restore order and win its struggle with the Knights Templar, who took their name from a medieval military order that protected Christian pilgrims during the Crusades.
    CHAOS, LOCKDOWN, MORE CHAOS
Mexico's biggest producer of iron ore, Michoacán state is a magnet for Chinese traders feeding demand for steel in their homeland. But the mines also created an opportunity for criminal gangs, such as the Knights Templar, looking to broaden their revenue base into more legitimate businesses.
"The mines were mercilessly exploited, and the ore was leaving. But not in rafts or launches - it was going via the port, through customs, on ships," said Michoacán’s governor, Fausto Vallejo, soon after the Navy occupied the port on November 4.
Already a thriving criminal enterprise adept at corrupting local officials and squeezing payments from businesses, developers and farmers, the Knights took to mining with aplomb, according to entrepreneurs and miners working around the port.
Hidden behind mountain roads about an hour from Lazaro Cardenas, one small town mustered hundreds of trucks this year to lead the gang's scramble to the port, a local miner said.

That town - Arteaga - is the birthplace of Servando Gomez, the former school teacher who leads the Knights Templar.

Bob Bobertson, 56, better known as Farmer Bob,

died of an apparent heart attack on Saturday afternoon.

An employee at the produce stand,
located behind The Union office off Sutton Way at the end of Olympia Park Circle,

The emergency responders were unable to resuscitate him, Sears said.

    4. The notion of Judaism as a “race”, rather than a religion of various races, is without foundation.

The results of a recently published study by Israeli-American geneticist Dr Eran Elhaik at John Hopkins University have scientifically and genetically validated Sand’s research

The idea of a “nation race” was progressively developed and reinforced over centuries among segregated Jewish communities in Europe.

With the rise of German nationalism in the 19th century, Jewish historian Heinrich Graetz “retrospectively” crafted a discrete identity for the ghettoized people –  mapping their origin to an old kingdom and wandering exiles.
The exiles tales transpired from a Christian myth of “divine punishment” imposed on Jews for rejecting the new religion.

The parable is likely to have originated from the Old Testament story of Jews wandering the desert for disobeying God and worshipping a golden calf.
Christians propagated the concept of exile to lure “disobeying” Jews to the new religion, becoming their saviour from another eternal banishment.

Modern political Zionism, which otherwise rejects the Christian Bible, adopted the untested story of “Jewish exile” to establish a mythical linkage between European Jews and the Middle East.

But Jewish history tells us that the Romans did not expel the original Jews from Palestine when they crushed the Simon bar Kokhba revolt in 136 AD but instead barred them only from city of Jerusalem – and even then they were allowed to visit it during Tisha B’Av, the annual fasting day on the ninth day of the month of Av in the Hebrew calendar.

Under Christianity and during the Roman Empire a large number of native Jews converted to Christianity and, with the advent of Islam, most adopted the new religion and assimilated under the new power.

In addition to the descendants of the Canaanites, the original denizens before patriarch Abraham’s arrival from Mesopotamia, Sand concludes that today’s

Muslim and Christian Palestinians are actually the true progenies of the original Jews.

Quitting alcohol for short periods seems to bring health benefits – but it also changes your mindset about drinking, and that could be a bigger gain

GIVING up alcohol for January? For many people, in the UK at least, it has become a ritual in recent years. The assumption is that taking a break will help your liver to recover from the seasonal onslaught of alcohol and rich food.

Does it work? Upon investigation, we found little research on the effects of such "dryathlons". We thought that was surprising. So a group of New Scientist volunteers took part in a ground-breaking study organised by medical researchers at University College London.

The preliminary results are striking, suggesting that abstinence significantly reduces levels of liver fat, cholesterol and blood glucose (see "Our liver vacation: Is a dry January really worth it?"). Intriguing, but we'll have to wait for larger studies before we can be confident of how large or enduring those benefits really are.

But a period of abstinence may have consequences beyond the physiological. The health benefits of a one-month break may prove to be inconsequential when set against the detriments of drinking for the rest of the year – certainly if people take the break as licence to increase their alcohol intake at other times.

But a dry period may help with that, too. Alcohol is a drug: one that kills 2.5 million people each year globallyMovie Camera and which the World Health Organization ranks as the third largest risk factor for premature death. When, how and why we drink is strongly affected by personal and social factors.

Habitual drinkers can find it difficult to negotiate social events without alcohol. But get over the initial discomfort of drying out, and healthier habits may follow. Several New Scientist participants reported they found it easier to decline alcohol after the study had ended, or to start an evening off with low-alcohol drinks. But the lack of palatable, non-sugary choices proved frustrating: perhaps drinks manufacturers could make more effort to cater to the month-off market.

This is, of course, just the anecdotal experience of a handful of people. But the potential for people to rewrite their contract with alcohol may prove a stronger argument for dialling back on booze for a while every year than any health benefits. Worth considering as you decide whether to open another bottle of wine.

  41. Belief in God doesn't undermine evolution: Column

    Eli Federman 7:03 p.m. EST December 31, 2013

A survey this week shows that most Americans accept evolution.
Thus, many of those who are religious also believe in evolution and don't view it as a threat to faith.
Yet, atheists and religionists polarize the debate over religion and science.

This week's survey by the Pew Research Center's Religion and Public Life Project shows that 60% of Americans believe that "humans and other living things have evolved over time." That means most Americans accept evolution.

This also means that many of those who are religious and believe in God, also believe in evolution. They don't view evolution as a threat to faith.

Both atheists and religionists polarize the debate. Atheists sometimes wield evolution as a hatchet to discredit religion, and religionists sometimes claim that evolution is incompatible with faith because it does not conform to a literal reading of the Bible's Book of Genesis.

Despite this, significant percentages see religion and evolution as compatible. In fact, roughly 24% of adults said they believe "a supreme being guided the evolution of living things." And over 90% of Americans believe in God, which further reinforces that, to many, the belief in God is not incompatible with accepting evolution. Even 51% of scientists are reported to "believe in some form of deity or higher power."

Several prominent scientists, like Dr. Francis Collins, adopt the view that evolution compliments faith, while others, like Stephen Jay Gould, maintain that religion and science represent to different non-mutually exclusive understandings of the world.

Theistic evolutionist, Dr. Collins, former director of the Human Genome Project, says, "evolution by descent from a common ancestor is clearly true. If there was any lingering doubt about the evidence from the fossil record, the study of DNA provides the strongest possible proof of our relatedness to all other living things."

In its publication Science and Creationism, the National Academy of Sciences adopted the view that "science and religion occupy two separate realms of human experience. Demanding that they be combined detracts from the glory of each."

Prominent atheist Richard Dawkin's describes the belief that God influenced evolution as an attempt to "(smuggle) God in by the backdoor." Ironically, Young Earth creationists share Dawkin's disdain claiming that accepting evolution undermines literal biblical teachings by regarding the creation story as a parable or allegory.

Perhaps Dawkin's doesn't know that Charles Darwin himself never said that evolution had to be Godless or directionless. Nothing about evolution disproves God or religion. It is simply a sound scientific understanding of our origins. It doesn't prove nor disprove a God claim.

The Young Earth creationists should also stop using religion as a wedge against science, by trying to misleadingly fit science into preconceived biblical narrative.

The atheists and religious should not present an either-or proposition between belief in God and acceptance of evolution. It does not have to be one or the other.

It is nice to see a healthy percentage of religious people rise above the false-dichotomy and divisiveness to find a harmonious balance that accepts evolution and faith simultaneously.

People cited violation of the First Amendment when a New Jersey schoolteacher asserted that evolution and the Big Bang are not scientific and that Noah's ark carried dinosaurs.

      This case is not about the need to separate church and state;
it's about the need to separate ignorant, scientifically illiterate people from the ranks of teachers.”

The man who calls himself an American citizen and who yet shows by his actions that he is primarily the citizen of a foreign land, plays a thoroughly mischievous part in the life of our body politic.

He has no place here; and the sooner he returns to the land to which he feels his real heart-allegiance, the better it will be for every good American.”
