COLLECTIVE MADNESS

“Soft despotism is a term coined by Alexis de Tocqueville describing the state into which a country overrun by "a network of small complicated rules" might degrade. Soft despotism is different from despotism (also called 'hard despotism') in the sense that it is not obvious to the people."

Molan Labe

When you’re the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and you set up a booth at the largest gun show in the world, you’re gonna have to expect some shenanigans from the gun enthusiast attendees.

One particularly clever 2nd Amendment supporter snuck up to the ATF booth and committed one of the more hilarious acts of political commentary we’ve seen in a long time:

Sorry dude.

For those not in the know, “Molon Labe” has been taken up by 2nd Amendment defenders as a slogan meaning, “come and take them,” referring to firearms. It’s reportedly what Spartan king Leonidas said in retort to the Persian demand that they lay down their arms at the famous battle at Thermopylae. I’m told that since there is no perfect transliteration of the original Greek into English, “Molan Labe” is a reasonable version as well as the more traditional “Molon Labe.”

While we cannot condone vandalism, we salute the wit of the gun right advocate in his modest act of civil disobedience.

  1. How will this thread morph into the usual topics? Deuce will say Molon Labe is the chorus of the Conga Line, and actually refers to all the Benjamins J Street is passing out like condoms to destroyer sailors pulling in to Pusan. WiO will say Molon Labe really means "Never Again", even though Jews vote at least 3:1 Donk, and Donks are gun grabbers. Jenny will talk about the great Molon Labe pilsner they serve in a certain Munich beer hall. Rufus will say a Molon Labe is a gadget that lets you plug your appliances directly into the ground, but Big Oil wants to "come and get them". Sam will post a joke about Saint Peter using my sin clock as a fan. Farmer Bob will say his niece has really big honkin' Molon Labes.

    2. Zero sense of humor, WiO. Even God was able to kid around sometimes, like when he was being humorously sarcastic with Jonah:

"Thou hast had pity on the gourd, for the which thou hast not laboured, neither madest it grow; which came up in a night, and perished in a night: And should not I spare Nineveh, that great city, wherein are more than sixscore thousand persons that cannot discern between their right hand and their left hand; and also much cattle?"

The ATF guy in the picture trying to get the poster off of his poster is the personification of what one would expect an ATF officer to look like. (I mean minus the usual vest, tactical gear, and headset, of course.)

  5. Islamist militants strengthen grip on Iraq's Falluja

Instead, scores more ISIL fighters have sneaked into the city along with an array of weaponry ranging from small arms and mortars to Grad missiles and anti-aircraft guns, according to security and local officials, residents and tribal leaders.

"Our sources in Falluja indicate that militant numbers have increased to more than 400 in the last few days and that more anti-aircraft guns were received," said a senior local official who declined to be named. His figure could not be confirmed.

You have to be sneaky, indeed, to haul in that kind of weaponry unopposed. According to the article, the central government has zero control in what amounts to Anbar Provence. How about admitting the obvious and sparing Iraqis further futile bloodshed: Iraq is three autonomous regions and any hope of unifying them is a fools errand.

a'Q is looking at this as did an American hero known for audacity:

"They're on our right, they're on our left, they're in front of us, they're behind us; they can't get away from us this time...We're surrounded. That simplifies the situation
